I saw you looking Steve and was wondering what you were gonna say. There were some "characters" there. ROD

Pendulum Club
I first found it by word of mouth too. I took this girl to see Chairman of the Board In Manchester and to impress I'd asked a couple of guys in Ralphs Records where was a good place to go afterward. Im guessing it was 1971 cos I think I was still at school and it was at the Victoria pub. I seem to remember the dj's as being advertised [or announced] as Sam and Dave [White]. There may have been three with Barry [Tasker] or I suppose for dj purposes Barry was Sam. I think though there was a Sam for a short while. Don't remember Soul Sam as a dj there at all but I suppose he could have done a guest spot in the later period. Mr. Ellis Im sure I heard one night but compared to the playlist of Barry and Dave he was a non-starter, more a showman and "face" than a dj.. Richard came later, maybe after Dave jacked it in. Va Va's followed soon after Richard started playing there. There was always a warm-up where Bobby Bland would be played and just nice records [Rhonda Davis] that were not particularly Northern monsters but once it got going it was second-to-none playlist wise. Never went to the Cats but from what I've heard very similar. Barry Tasker to me is one of the best dj's from the time I've ever heard play but he didn't appear to want to play the allnighters. I suspect Brian "45" Phillips on here played a big part in that too. A fond memory now but it deserves a bit more exposure when we look back. Forgot to mention where I first heard Mamie Galore on Sack and Joseph Moore on Mar-V-Lus ROD

Commenting On Ebay Sales
Not quite getting this. When I had money for 45s I trawled Ebay. Most sections.Even C&W on occasions just in case. I wasn't the only person doing it as there were bids on soul 45s in say the Blues, Garage or Misc. The only thing you could miss was something you didn't know or didn't want. Just because there are a few bids and price is low with a couple of days to go on an auction does not mean that few have seen it. If you're like me you look at the last 24 hours [finishing soonest]. I guess there are those who look at newly listed auctions and try the make an offer approach or get an early bid in. The only time I can see posting on here having any effect is if it were some massive c/u and who'd be daft enough to ruin their own chances at getting it if it was unknown to everyone else. Pete was lucky that others missed it. A couple of bids [and Im always surprised how few bids there are on these 45s considering the global reach of Ebay] and Pete's massive bargain might have been a lot dearer. Hope I've not given anything away there by suggesting members search every category not just Northern or Soul. Have a mate on here who thought Ebay was just the UK site until I pointed him to US Ebay and all the other possibilities. ROD

Wants Guidelines As At 24 April 2013 Please Read Now
Just a few words to hopefully enable members to get the best out of this feature. Ads, as with Sales, are limited to 2 per day per member with no re-posting within 3 days. After first re-posting allow 7 days. If you are posting a couple or more wants please do not split into seperate ads. When re-posting there is NO need to compose a new ad. Just add a post to original ad along lines of "Still looking" and ad will return to top of the Wants section. New members are asked to post an introduction before placing any ads. It is suggested that members are precise in their wording. Asking generally for a want can lead to both set sale and "make me an offer" replies. If members do not wish to make an offer then state clearly in the ad that you are only interested in the item at a set sale price. Rather than a general "Wanted" or "Looking for..." in the Topic Title it is recommended that members give some indication as to artists, labels etc Where replies are received to a want it is only polite to contact all members who have taken the time to respond. An interim reply where you are awaiting further offers to compare prices or to decline the offer. The feedback system can be utilised to report those who are felt to be wasting other members' time by asking for 45s and not replying to offers received. Members can also state what they wish to pay for an item which would cut out having to respond to offers above that price. If members do not want comments to appear within the ad then lock the topic and ask for all responses to be via PM. If the topic is not locked then members are asked to restrict their comments to those which may help to locate the item. Any wider discussion can be accommodated by opening a new topic in LAYB. If anone has anything to add to these guidelines then please feel free to discuss here Thank you ROD

Guitar Ray On Ebay
Yes I think if VG- had appeared earlier in the ad that would have gone some way to assuage my, and I admit, totally OTT response to this ad. It's the big build-up to VG- that gets my back up. And Ernie I have loads of 45s over 40 years old, some of which I've owned for nearly 40 years. They are not in this condition so I expect better and I suspect from your comment you do too. ROD

Guitar Ray On Ebay
It's just the context of it I think. It's like Harrod's proudly announcing their new Poundland concession. ROD

Guitar Ray On Ebay
https://www.ebay.com/itm/GUITAR-RAY-45-Wreck-My-Life-SHAGG-northern-soul-HEAR-/370573402323 As I enter my sixtieth year I've realised Im getting less tolerant and this has totally wound me up although for Ebay it's nothing new. A very professional layout with picture and soundclip and to start an "expert" appraisal of this 45's place in rare soul history. Then I wade through the usual instructions as to how to have a pleasant shopping experience bidding on the seller's "great items" only to find at the end that the record is VG-. although as usual it plays better up to a VG and he has put it in a sleeve. It's shagged. ROD

Barry White Tracy All I Have Is You SORTED THANKS
Look, I thought we had the understanding that we don't discuss the relative merits of 45s or prices on actual ad threads. Whilst it's true there's no reference to this in Wants guidelines posted by Simsy [which Im about to update] I did ask in the Sales guidelines that anyone who wishes to ramble on about such things open a seperate topic in LAYB. Closed the topic because Jimmy seems to be sorted. ROD [forum moderator]

Ignorant Posters In Wants
I take a pretty laidback approach to people letting me down Pete with sales but obvious from this thread and others that it does rile some and create bad feeling. And a ballpark figure is something we've talked about before which I think is a good idea but then we had the argument why put a price when you may get it for less without stating a price. Can't make that compulsory but can recommend as an option when I re-do Wants notes. ROD

Ignorant Posters In Wants
When I updated the Sales guidelines I didn't look at Simsy's pinned tips/notes in Wants. I'll edit those after Xmas when I have some time to include something along the lines of replying to PMs. If anyone has any suggestions as to what else to include please PM me. Of course that won't solve it overnight as it's quite evident from my modding so far that reading guidelines is a low priority for some. If members have problems with people reneging on orders etc let me know. I can't force them to honour their commitment but it will help eventually to identify any serial offenders. ROD

Ignorant Posters In Wants
Dave, This really gets on my tits! If members are letting other members down on a regular basis how do you expect anything to be done about it if you dont raise it with me as the forum moderator by PM. And sometimes, as a recent incident showed, nothing to do with being ignorant but inexperience in using PM system. ROD

Ignorant Posters In Wants
Sorry Nev, didn't notice you'd locked it. But I reckon it's better to be discussed rather than blanket condemnation of wants posters. Opposing view is why should you reply to some chancer who offers you a 45 for two or three times the price offered by others other than to ask "why?" Not that a polite acknowledgement isn't the best approach. ROD

Gino Washington Pressing Question
I think there are 2 Atac pressings. My WDJ is West Coast as it has Hollywood address. There's local Detroit Atac too. ROD

Curtis - How Can I Tell Her - Variations
Hi Andy He said they released the non-disco version first but rapidly replaced it, with the boom boom version, at the suggestion of local DJs who thought it would do better in the emerging disco market That's an interesting comment. Disco may have had it's day which might explain it's lack of success. That Midwest place was a DJ Pool too so when I was in there a lot of dj's were going through latest releases. I remember very excited huddle around a Sugar Hill release [i think "Birthday Party"]. Gene Anderson worked there too. ROD

Grading 45S For Sale
Kev, I've added a word about that to grading system. Thought I'd done it last night but disappeared into the ether. ROD

Grading 45S For Sale
Im using VG++ because mainly it's US 45s selling on here and that is the US system. Ex is a UK thing but EX equates with VG++ or should do. I would have thought most people do check the 45 for sound quality before selling. Hence M- as sticklers would say it's not M cos you played it. So M- and VG++ are grades pertaining to 45s that have have almost never been played or hardly at all. Then VG+ is for 45s that have been well cared for despite a lot of plays so there's bound to be some light marks or odd light scuff and below those are 45s that haven't been looked after. They are only guidelines and are not compulsory. I do think though once you start getting into too many grades it gets a bit confusing. Something like EX- what does it mean? There's a mnor blemish plus some other blemishes? Wouldn't VG+ work better with a brief description like couple of scuffs on A, B has couple of marks. Like Richard I wouldn't be happy pulling anything stated as around EX out of it's sleeve and noticing marks and scuffs. BTW I also updated Tips in Sales Guidelines to recommend that all sellers state refund policy in their ads and if they don't buyers should make sure before buying. ROD

Grading 45S For Sale
No , these grades are deffo NOT play grades. The grade for what you suggest is G. If someone puts "plays VG+" after that it's up to the buyer really. Some are only interested in how it plays. ROD
-
Grading 45S For Sale
They are visual gradings not play gradings but yes if a Mint looking 45 plays with a hiss all the way through ity's not M- really. Think you would mention that along with WOL etc. Added a sentence Bob. if you can come up with more comprehensive wording feel free to suggest. ROD

Grading 45S For Sale

Vondells- New U.k. Release
Guys, I've closed this topic. The poster has re-issued legally an expensive original making it available to those who otherwise may not have been able to have a copy. Kent amongst others do the same but I've not noticed similar comments when re-issues are announced. If you think re-issues are detrimental to the scene I'd open a topic in AATS. This is just an ad to tell members the record is now available. ROD [forum moderator]

Would Anyone Grade This Record Ex+ ? (Bought On Soul Source)
Yes. that's what I was getting at when I replied to Kris's grading scheme. Im still working on drawing up something. Ian, I think unplayed stock is turning up all the time. Might be harder now but when I was doing it full-time store stock 25-30 year old 45s were very common back in 90's. As for the refund and Gift thing I mentioned all that in the gudelines [see top of Sales page] that were posted at end of September. Best practice kinda thing. SteveL, yes told a couple of posters when I notice. Rarely is it the whole ad though. ROD
