  1. What did the Ronnie Mitchell on Spectrum end up at?
  2. Really, I thought it was the other way around, with the RPR distributed one being the West Coast release, whilst Atac 7823 was the initial Detroit ARCHER pressed release? Nice on both labels, regardless! Happy to be corrected.
  3. I'm intrigued... What about the way Allen Toussaint plays his piano, as featured in Benny Spellman's 'Fortune teller' and 'This is for you my love, and Willie Harper's 'But I couldn't' (etc)...is that known as 'open chords'?

It's on two labels, Mel. The easier is as the flipside to his, 'My first lonely night' on Era. As much as a stomper as it is, it really highlights that Jewel couldn't sing that well...unless he was having an off day?!
  5. If you like Greater Experience kinda sound, then you need this little beauty. However, for the best effect you have to play it at -3 to make it danceable! Recommended.

'Moments like these'...'tis good! Who does the other version, Mel?
  8. This is a superb track...I wrote the following for Shades of Soul fanzine back in early 2004: BARONS - I'VE GOT A FEELING - ETAH 102 Another solid slab of New Orleans soul...just right for reactivation this one, as it was previously featured by Guy Hennigan during his mid 8T's sets, as 'Tower Brooks & The Empires'. This really is meaty and beaty with a chopping guitar that could take down a Giant-Redwood tree! Gutsy male lead vocal, more than ably supported by the band thumping out an obvious New Orleans sound with subtle guitar twangs and a brass section that could blow your playhouse down. Back to that chopping guitar...it's so up-front and in yer face throughout, dictating the beat, as well as being able to chop down those a fore mentioned trees! I used to have a WD of this number, but foolishly let it go, only to replace it with a blue stock copy (WD still wanted!) a couple of years later after much searching...we all make mistakes! By the way, have you noted that the label name, ETAH, is actually HATE spelt backwards...and it's also home for another Guy Hennigan monster, remember his 'Darrow Fletcher - 'Angel up above'' cover up, as that's Little Tony & The Hawks on Etah too. For other disc reviews, feel free to visit my site.
  9. Aw! shucks Off to view more discs on Saturday
  10. Yep, got a stock copy in excellent condition for £15 +P&P. PM me if you need it.
  11. Jeez must've been a long bath?! Anyhow, so, what about Ray's grinding slab of R'n'B/Northern on Krafton, 'Real, real love'? I've had WDs, burgundy and lime-green label copies...the latter two are often spotted with smudged print (possible re-press?). What's the going rate for this head-hammering slice o'soul at the moment?
  12. Gobsmacked! I sent a load of parcels out on Monday...all seem to be landing on doorsteps already! A Bar-B-Q...seems the weather is better in the UK than over here at the moment...we've had a typhoon pass near by bringing plenty o'rain, a few earthquakes over the last few days and it's only 17 degrees. Anyway, ladies and gentlemen, enjoy the discs.
  13. Posted today...along with yours!
  14. Get this...I mailed some parcels in downtown Tokyo on Monday afternoon, and one of them was delivered early this morning, Wednesday, to a fellow SoulSourcer in the UK!!! Here's the details lifted from the courier's website, as the parcels I send are trackable all the way, doorstep to doorstep: May 12 16:40 Posted in Tokyo May 13 00:47 Arrival at Narita Airport May 13 03:38 Through Japanese Customs and in the air May 13 21:46 Arrives at Heathrow May 14 00:38 Through UK Customs and leaves Heathrow May 14 07:45 Delivered to doorstep in Gloucester Amazing...and the disc arrived in one piece too!
  15. I'm amazed no one has ever snapped up the white label test press I have for sale of the Manhattens on GW...hand typed/stamped labels...a slab of GW history!
  16. Not an easy sell, as good as it is. Must admit, I think the 'I go crazy' side is dreadful...couldn't believe it when I heard it a few times at Stafford...but...the 'Bad talk' is a FANTASTIC midtempo tune and worth the admission price alone! Has anyone got seen a stock copy of this one?
  17. This is such a good record...100% pure Northern...great instrumental breaks...and much rarer on a stock copy. Sounds awesome over a venue system, not that I've hard it out that much over the years. Highly recommended.
  18. Envious.
  19. Like a train careering down the mountainside with wheels often leaving the tracks, yet the driver yells to his side-kick to shovel in more coal, and cackles to himself as he sounds the whistle...kinda fits too!? DJs climb aboard this one!
  20. Yep that was me...a looooooooooooooooooong time ago! You can delete that address for sure. Bet you haven't got two D.Flynns in Tokyo, though, eh, eh?!
  21. I accept JPYen, US$ or good ole UKĀ£...or vinyl/styrene of course...and on the odd occasion cloth too (still need the 1st night Casino Russ & Richard and 1st Anniversary badges for the collection!)...who needs Paypal!?! Alas Tony, it has already sold...sorry my friend. Grab a copy if you get the chance as the recording quality really is great!
  22. Did I...blimey that must've been when your database was updated via carbon-paper, if it was me?! My last x2 copies came from over here...along with a couple of 'Big oak trees' and 'I want to give my love to you'...all mint and unplayed too! The Jades is the pick of the brace though, and not an easy one to find nowadays...what would you sell it for now, John? Will the other D.Flynn please stand up
  23. I agree. Like a more raw version of the Districts on Nile...top notch guitar work. Poncello strikes again!
  24. Detroit? It was the instrumental that used to crop up as a tape swapper's fave during the 80's...think Domar had a fair stash of them at one point? Agree that the vocal isn't Soulful, mind!
  25. They're not stamped like some earlier Soultown releases...different pressing plant involved? With regards to Mark's comment about the sound quality: I haven't owned a Canterbury (WD naturally!) copy in 20+ years, but on playing the Soultown copy it instantly sounded a lot 'sharper' than the Canterbury counterpart, as I recalled. Yup, my ears weren't deceiving me as both the vocals and instrumentation are defo different on checking it against a Canterbury soundfile, so different takes/mixes? The backing vocals and strings are further down in the mix of the Soultown version, whilst the brass and tambourine are defo more in your face, making it a lot 'brighter' and 'cleaner' sounding overall, without becoming 'clinical' or lifeless...and it's in mono. Well, you live and learn...wonder what the Zea recording is like?
