  1. Love your posts Jock..........they must take a while (especially with a hangover), but they are always worth it mate! Absoultely spot on...........give that man another Resolve!! Cheers, Mark R
  2. I think you're right Chalky..........an overused word and a derogatory term for anything that's not 60's or Northern. I have a tape somewhere of a Hinckley All Nighter in 1983, where a well known oldies DJ plays Jackie Moore "This Time Baby" (an all time classic, of course) and says something like, "The question is where do you draw the line betweeen disco crap and Northern Soul.........." and goes on to to say it can't be disco crap 'cos disco crap gets in the charts!! Cheers, Mark R

This is exactly how I think it should be.........whilst MODERN should mean new, in the UK it's taken a different meaning altogether. Unless a similar legacy is left which twists the definition of CONTEMPORARY, I think this is exactly the right description of the music I'm into. Cheers, Mark R

I would say, though we're generalising a bit here, you're pretty much right there Dave............it is my experience, in general, that fans of, let's say "older soul" are far less tolerant of new stuff than is the case for the reverse situation. Cheers, Mark R

That's a pretty good post..........but you're wasting your valuable time here mate, I think. I have an old compo tape in the car at the moment that I made up some years ago from new releases at the time, and back to back on that tape are Yukihiro Fukutomi "Love Each Other" and Stan Mosley's "Kiss and Tell"............both modern (as in around 5 years old) but both very different in style (1 house and 1 southern soul), but they're equally brilliant because they both have "IT". As you say, made for a different generation, with different technology, but in some cases by the same people...........people are free to decide what they like, but you can't deny this stuff it's place. Cheers, Mark R
  6. Just a quick heads up guys that, for personal reasons, unfortunately there will be no show this month...........normal service to be resumed in October. Spoke to Starpoint today, and they said they would re-run a previous show of mine, so for those that may have missed one, it's 9-11pm this Friday 28th September at www.starpointradio.com Thanks and apologies to those that listen. Cheers, Mark R
  7. Sorry to go off the Mel Waiters topic Sean, but I recently put one of my compo tapes on in the car that I knocked up a few years ago, and Stan Mosley's "Kiss & Tell" is on it.............sounds foookin' superb and needs to find its way back into my playbox I think!! Back to Mel, and I love his "Running Stop Lights" too, which was the killer cut from one of his albums, but can't recall which one at present. Good stuff! Cheers, Mark R
  8. Agree with Steve G.................totally unforgettable, and I want to see them again. Incidentally, another thing about putting an act of this stature on..............it brings people to venues that you don't get to see too often...................for instance, "Record Corner" Terry Davies was there that night and I don't think I've spoke to him since that night. These are good nights for lots of reasons!! Those of you recently reading All Our Yesterdays will know I've been in the loft, so this is good timing................... And not forgetting Otis............ Cheers, Mark R
  9. Isn't he actually interviewed briefly on that TV prog about NS..............the one with Mick Hucknall in?? He's talking about the Wheel and early Manchester clubs. Cheers, Mark R
  10. Proper good soul music.......
  11. How many times were Martha & The Vandellas on at Hinckley? It's just that I remember going to see them and the venue was moved on that very night at short notice to the Regent Club, across the road. I'm just wondering if this was the night that your flyer is advertising???? Cheers, Mark R
  12. Can't you tell by my posts tonight that I've been in the loft??? A young Mark R to the left!! Cheers, Mark R
  13. Hi Sian.............here's one taken by me on the way in one Friday night: Cheers, Mark R
  14. Just found these and scanned them............... upstairs............. downstairs........... Cheers, Mark R
  15. You are joking!! Have the LP with this on from early 90's.......no 45 unfortunately!! Cheers, Mark R
  16. A good call, Sister Dawn!! Cheers, Mark R
  17. It has to be Wigan Casino.........I can remember as a youngster having dreams about what it must have been like!! I was 15 when it closed!! Must admit, having listened to some of those Stafford clips yesterday, I think the way your mate described Stafford is pretty cool. It certainly opened my eyes up a bit, from those deep, dark sinister sixties newies like Roy Roberts "Got To Have Your Love" through to Atlantic Starr "One Love", and all in the same room Cheers, Mark R
  18. I'm sure that video is the one with a young Glyn Reardon from Nuneaton on it, and a young Mrs "Fluff" Freeman...........sure Mark will confirm. I'm sure my old friends Andy & Tracy Newman (no longer together) are on there too. Travelled a bit with them in the 80's, particularly to Parr Hall..........some right laughs along the way. Hadn't seen Andy for years, and had a nice surprise at Presatyn a few years back when I was spinning a few tunes in the Vic Friday afternoon and in he walks.........see him regularly at those kind of events now. Think he only comes to weekenders as he now live in IOW. Never went to Tony's myself though! Cheers, Mark R
