Sounds typifying classic venues
I will say this is strictly through my own research online or by talking to people who actually were there as I'm someone who was born waaaay after the hay day of any of the clubs mentioned in the initial post. It seems widely considered that Cleethorpes acted as a feeder to other clubs during its time and although being slightly pushed to the background in comparison to other clubs has lots of discoveries under its belt, with tunes either being played there first or broken there. The following artists still hold association with Cleethorpes either through playlists or uploaded tape recordings: Shedloads of modern I couldn't even begin to list, class oldies like Carl Spencer as well as big money tracks by Don Varner & The Ivories whilst being more widely known for pushing the harder-edged out-and-out dancers like Frankie Crocker, Black Nasty, The Crow, Roscoe & Friends, JJ Callier & Skull Snaps and the like... Personally, I don't think there's ever been enough emphasis or acclaim put on Cleethorpes but it's there if you look for it. However, when you talk about it to those who went, they say it had an edge on some of the other clubs at the time and is revered by many as one of the best. By the sounds of it, it marched to the beat of its own drum and dancers were said to have moved differently, in their own style which I can only imagine is directly related to the 'progressive' sound & pushing an across-the-board format with modern and oldies played side by side. Additionally, from what I've read on here when Cleethorpes ran it was noticeably quieter at Wigan & was the leading niter in 76 for 13 months on the trot. I remember reading a great comment on a Blogspot post ages ago where it said something like 'Wigan had the clap but Cleethorpes had the stomp' which they say could be heard ringing out across the promenade as you approached it... Haha, proper ace. I love hearing stories about the plethora of different sounds that got played in my town as aforementioned there's only so much you can find without really getting on your hands and knees and trawling through posts on here, Facebook & the occasional auction write-up, looking forward to some people sharing stuff I might have not heard due to my age... I remember reading a while ago on Facebook that Mary Chapman's daughter is planning on putting together a book at some point which I hope happens as that will hopefully help fill in some blindspots.

The forgotten and the forgettable
Think it must have been the drugs then if it hasn't stood the test of time then eh 🤣

The forgotten and the forgettable
Agreed mate, funny that you've mentioned Bobby Wilson, I got one a while ago and since then i've seen its gone up in price from what I paid. I remember seeing it at £5 on discogs, then a week later cheapest was at £20. Loads of good cheapies get overlooked, all of the time. The only Malibus record on Duke 'I can't stand it' is another good budget tune as well!

The forgotten and the forgettable
I’ve always rated that Emotions tune, still cheap and still good!

The forgotten and the forgettable
Personally, I think Judy Street & Where is he by Flamma are same type of crap, they both lack any edge and just sound like dodgy pop. Is the side i've linked the one you're referring to as terrible or the side Nev used to play, out of interest? The flip on the Flamma tune that I’ve posted is absolute overlooked quality though in my eyes. I will say once ‘Where Is He' gets going, albeit not very good... It does have more merit to my ears than Judy Street ever has.

The forgotten and the forgettable
Think this is a pretty cool little question... Personally can't stand Judy Street - What (soz.) & I've been playing the flip of Nev Wherry's old spin from Cleethorpes & Sheffield KGB, Flamma Sherman - Where is he, for ages now. I don't even know if its really ever been played cos I'm too young to know. Properly off kilt for traditionalists I'd imagine but is a power dancer once it gets going that hardly anyone I've spoken to knows... Surely this must have been played at the Pier & the Winter Gardens??? I think its hardly known cos it has a 45 second intro and a long outro which might have put people off playing it out.

Craig Charles Northern Soul will never go away - Rolling Stone UK
Been seeing screen caps of this getting posted about on Instagram today. Know not everyone likes or appreciates Craig Charles but wondered what peoples thoughts were on the article. I've included the link and copied in the text from the article for anyone who can't be arsed to go on the site its self.* https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/craig-charles-northern-soul-never-140000774.html As the 50th anniversary of legendary Northern Soul venue Wigan Casino looms, BBC 6 Music has announced plans to mark the milestone with a night of special shows dedicated to the hugely beloved underground movement... We caught up with Craig Charles ahead of the broadcast to chat about the vitality and community of the movement, and the reasons for why it still holds a pivotal place in British youth culture history. Tell us a little bit about your personal history with Northern Soul and the stand out record or single which had the biggest impact on you? Craig Charles: I was too young to go to Wigan Casino but a couple of kids in my school who were a couple of years older, they used to get the bus from Smithdown Road every Friday night and used to beg me to come with them. My mum and dad wouldn’t let me go! So I was an outsider looking in on a Monday at these tired and weary faces and people explaining to me what the atmosphere at these places was like. You have to remember that youth culture at that time was very, very tribal. You had your punks, your rockers, your skinheads, suedeheads, guys into prog rock, your two-tone guys. There was an awful lot of pent-up aggression – loads of fighting. So, they told me about this place where everyone seemed to be happy. Everyone just danced. It was all just about dancing and music. That was my first introduction to it – as an outsider. There are two stand out records for me and they’re probably big ones in the Northern Soul cannon. Al Wilson’s The Snake and Frankie Valli’s The Night. They’re two records that on my show get requested more than any other record. link to full artcile https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/craig-charles-northern-soul-never-140000774.html site note *Article clipped by site as per our long running articles policy tap to read

JMAuction - 14/06/2023 - Results!
I have a mate who's good friends with one of the employees who works there, always tips me off when they've got a collection in... Also said to me, a lot of the time most of the big ticket items are picked up before going on the website and sold direct to collectors/dealers.

Ebay prices - crashing - Sign of what's to come ??
Theres 4 or 5 instances where I've had to message US sellers recently and had to either give private email / whatsapp / discogs account name etc... Just so you can begin to negotiate because theyre all so shit scared they're gonna get done over by the police / ebay accounts restricted. I've got a couple of records i'm buying now off a guy and the only way they'll do it with a bit of discount is if I pay via paypal goods and services. Absolutely mad!

I’m only a bit older than you and like the large bulk of people, buy with my ear. Not many in our age category can afford to get involved with the acetate side of things but those who do - you have to take your hat off to them. I always like to include some obscure stuff that’s either out of vogue or just never played within the rare soul circuits these days. One of them is a jazzy bit of garage soul and the other hardly anyone has heard cos it wasn’t spun by a top DJ or a massive sound at the time. There’s only one picture sleeve without the disc on Discogs and I’ve only ever seen one other copy go on eBay for less than a fiver which I missed - I ran it past a veteran DJ who also does mod stuff and a younger guy who does a lot of obscure 6T’s stuff and neither of them had heard this tune and the other one is the flip of an old Nev Wherry spin from KGB / Cleethorpes Winter Gardens, that ones a psychedelic stomper. (The side Nev played is a bit more standard 6Ts fare which is known but I prefer to play it’s twisted/funk edged b side. I’ve been told they’re ‘a load of shite’ to the standard of one of my good mates who’s more than double my age. However, when I recently did a set for a long time mate band’s single release, the crowd of just shy of 90 were all below 35 minus 2 older people received both of these tracks really well along with the rest of the stuff and had more people dancing than the bands on that occasion. There seems to be more and more mixed genre events that draw younger people a bit like Crossfire that have a broader lens in terms of what’s played rather than dedicated oldies / modern do’s. I was at a rocksteady / soul event last weekend that would ruffle purists but was a good time with good tunes played all night.

Good to know, as any one worth their salt should! That part of my comment was referring to the clientele who go to DNSC specifically and not all of the clubs mentioned in the article and I wasn’t speculating about the authenticity of any of the clubs either but was just noting how the attitudes of younger people who go to those kinds of events aren’t the same as their seniors. They’re more bothered about the sound it’s self where some older people will only dance to originals and proudly tell you that. There are plenty of young DJs in the UK who have incredible collections and push great stuff rare, new, unknown & old alike and everyone knows who they are.

Academics or not, it’s no secret to say there has always been appreciation of black music within the youth/sub culture throughout history by working people in the UK and probably a tangible link between most of us having to work jobs all week to keep heads above water and wanting to do something a bit different on the weekend but I don’t know if they’re linked and wouldn’t agree it’s for any singular reason or what the article alludes to… It reads more or less as if it’s written for a journalism module on a media course. Definitely below university standard, anyway. There aren’t a lot of young people at nighters, weekends or alldayers in reality, you can probably count people below 35+ on two sets of hands at any given do. I will say I’ve never been to Deptford Soul Club I’ve seen photos online and as mentioned earlier it seems largely to be a uni crowd that you’d see going to Ministry of Sound, KoKo (they don’t look like typical crowd) and seems to me a more or less convenient opposite to the original ethos of the clubs in the 60s/70s/80s etc… I.e: Less focus on pushing ‘new’ sounds, all original sets and it travels to the clientele instead. Young people these days aren’t totally loyal to one thing and individualism is a lot more fragmented. Not really sure why they’ve declared their difference to other clubs, prerty much everyone in those photos vests and vintage clobber? It’s Techno on a Tuesday, Soul on the Saturday. Main part is they’re enjoying the music.
