  1. It just shows how special 'our community' is that a man who most people didn't actually know are so saddened and shocked by his untimely death. My only real contact with Bob was via this forum and his radio shows, but I feel as if I've lost a close family member. Such is the power of the music we share and the forum that gives us that opportunity. Truly upset and so sorry for Bob's family and close friends.
  2. Just read this and absolutely stunned like everybody else. Bob had an incredible appetite for knowledge and was prepared to share that with us all via this medium and his radio shows. His interviews with some of the known and often less known artists are testimony to his enthusiasm and complete passion for the music. It is not an understatement to say he will be sorely missed.
  3. He could have a thread of his own, Kev. Always had a real soft spot for "Statute of a fool"
  4. Too many but a few obvious ones off the top of my head. And maybe there obvious because they are so fukcing awesome! Apologies if they've been mentioned before but I cant see the Youtube clips at work for those that have no title against them. Shirley Brown - This love Soul Children - What's happening baby J Blackfoot - I stood on the sidewalk and cried Anita Baker - Will you be mine Soul Children - Poem on the schoolhouse door Millie Jackson - I stll love you (you still love me) Tavares - Let me heal the bruises Tower of Power - Just when we start making it And about a zillion others that make it all worthwhile.
  5. So what exactly did you expect for a soundtrack which sets out to represent the period of the film?
  6. I think I always know the answer to it because after approaching 50 years its pull as the epitome of music ambrosia remains undiminished. Stiff and serious competition from many quarters including Originals, David Ruffin, Gladys Knight, Temptations, Four Tops as to be expected but to me the best, and therefore my favourite, is..... Miracles - Tracks of my tears. I hope to God I never tire of hearing this.
  7. Anita Baker - No more tears. Vocals done in one take apparently.
  8. No doubt you are fully entitled to your opinion but seriously...................
  9. Wouldn't know the answer to that without looking at the CD's. The two albums are amongst my most prized pieces of vinyl and have stood the test ot time and plays that seriously must run into the '000's now. Absolutely essential listening for anybody that regards themselves as a lover of soul music, whatever the genre or decade.
  10. Schmaltzy? A word so inappropriate for this track - you are hereby condemned to listen to "Wrong side of town" for an indeterminate period, Jock.
  11. Awesome Kev. Soul Children - just amazing vocals all round, but John Colbert a true master of the tortured vocal. And sadly missed.
  12. Mal, re Millie Jackson and being new to you. Does this mean you've 'discovered' Caught Up and Still Caught Up? As good as it gets as far as I'm concerned.
  13. Great call Andy. Stevenson/Hunter magic.
  14. Just consider how lucky we are to know, appreciate and support such beautiful music. Controllers - We don't Levert - I'm still Millie Jackson - I'm through trying to prove my love to you Music for the soul indeed.
  15. Black and Blue - Of all the hearts to break Debbie Taylor (or Mavis Staples) - I have learned to do without you. Soul Children - What's happening baby Tavares - Let me heal the bruises Anita Baker - No more tears. And probably at least a zillion more
  16. And I'll bet that "I got you babe" wasn't from original vinyl either.
  17. I know there are a myriad of reasons why records don't make it to final press but it never ceases to amaze me how a track remains unreleased until such times as the good guys at Kent (and others) mine the vaults and put out the previously unreleased stuff. Which leads me to the wonderful "Betcha' can't guess who" by the Newcomers, a previously unissued Truth track which appears on Kent 252 - More Perfect Harmony. What was going on when they decided to leave that one in the can?
  18. You're in good hands here, Jordan. Non-judgemental approach works for those involved and a fantastic opportunity for ALL to hear stuff that might not have been heard before. And even if stuff is known having a CD with a mix of genres, eras represented, male, female, group etc all in the mix can be highly rewarding. Fill your boots, lad. Mike.
  19. I hope not
  20. In. Get the usual suspects on the case. Dave Turner, Steve Edgar, Kev Cane, Pat Biggerstaff, John Lloyd et al, compliment it with some newbies and the jobs a good one. Mike.
  21. Seemingly never off the playlist and all down tempo... Mavis Staples - I have learned to do without you Tavares - Let me heal the bruises Soul Children - Poem on the schoolhouse door. Sam Dees - After all Black and Blue - Of all the hearts. No apologies of ever tiring of hearing these so they continued to be hammered in 2013.
  22. Know what you mean Pete. It's all about style with people like Rich and Sooty in my opinion. Rich was condescending and you could be turned off by that but as you say no one is forced to read what people post. With Sooty it's definitely style and I can honestly say that after one or two if his posts, I simply can't read them anymore. Way too much detail. Punctuation all over the place which makes anything difficult to read and then, as pointed out, too much of the 'I' and 'me' and the rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous. His motives are down to him and I really don't give a shit about his past but if he just reigned it all in a bit, he might have something worth reading. Just my opinion, mind.
  23. Hmm see what you mean. Eric Burdon, good call. Still an odd coincidence though. See from the tube that they have a Vietnam protest song too. Think I'll give that a miss.
