Cheapo's Record Stall In Soho
AS I remember there was a period of a year or so when Graham Parker was on everywhere, you couldn't avoid that man...Don't think I went to see ACDC with you but we certainly saw ole' rubberlips & his band at Knebworth as I have the pix to prove it. In between backdrops we did catch a bunch of punk gigs too, all the usual suspects many times plus eccentricities like Johnny Moped. I remember Graham Parker at the Nashville and the Hope & Anchor plus many other venues. At the end of 1976 I was transferred up to Aberdeen so that was the end of all that as Aberdeen in those days was a desert ( a f*****g freezing desert but a musical desert for sure)

Cheapo's Record Stall In Soho
Tone, Just dug out an old Polaroid pic of you, me & Clarkie taken on the stall in 1975. My firm had moved me down to their Gt Portland St office early 1975 so I used to spend lunch hour in Soho hunting food & vinyl. I bumped into Ady across the stall & we knew each other from somewhere that turned out to be the Torch so common ground sorted there began an enduring friendship. I ended up moving into his shared flat in Highbury with a squad of his university mates. I remember someones girlfriends dog ate my brand new pair of tan tassel loafers I'd just bought back from Spain. Never even wore 'em! She left a note saying "The dog ate Wotsits shoes". I wasn't even worth naming.... Great memories of the stall included sitting helping Ady to parcel up 100s of Bluebeat 45s to send of to Belgium. We thought it was hilarious that anyone would fork out good money for a load of what sounded like Spaghetti Western soundtracks. Happy daze...

The Geography Of Northernsoul
Chester - Back in the late 60s early 70s no rare soul just commercial pap in the local clubs. 15 miles down the road Warrington was the border post of Northern soul. Chester followed Liverpool's lead which was JB funk & all of that. If we wanted to hear proper soul we went Up the Junction in Crewe on week then the Torch the other. If we were on the pull and wanted a bit of funky git down we headed across the Mersey. I knew of no Rare soul scene in Liverpool at that time but had some great times at the She Club & others I struggle to remember.

Byron Lee - Frankenstein
Frankenstein is a killer alright I'll post it up on here if its not in the Refosoul section already. Others to check for are Slow Run (JAD) which I put on here sometime back, and Ska Doo Wah which is a Hammond thing which I think I sold some years ago. I think it came on UA over here. The price on an original Frankenstein on JA Soul is probably £50-60 nowadays for a VG+ but Phil Etgart at Enthucol can sort you a repress if youre not fussed Nij

2nd Rarest 45?
[ Keb used to play the Combinations too, was that a plate as well? PS Keb used to leave his play box round ours when we used to live up the hill from him, probably to stop wife #1 from selling off a couple to pay the Visa bill. We'd had a party one night & somehow during the cleanup we managed to break his newly acquired copy of the Mark IV on Brite Lite clean in half. Didn't faze him one bit, just "thats eighty five f****n quid ye owe me ye c**t". Star player...

Glen Miller
- Gerry & The Pacemakers
No copies of this vile outing were ever purchased by Mancunians of the Red persuasion & if they mistakenly did they would never get through the scanners on the East Lancs Rd Nij PS Nice to see yer at the Social for Donna's do the other week- Best Bassline
Ty Karim "You Really Made IT Good to Me" Totally Murderous Bassline..- A Tale Of Two (northern Soul) Cities/towns
Agree with the Chester comment but we're trying to educate the f***ers. Warrington 15 miles away heaving with proper people too. Whats the point of this thread exactly anyway? I bet theres not many in that town in Anglesey with 158 letters in its name but hey guess what theres loads in Manchester and London and Bradford and Barnsley and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz- You Lot - Any Of You Heard This?
I'd be up for a copy Pete Ta, Nij- The Greatest Voice
Male:Jackie Wilson Female : Irma Thomas- Twisted Oldies
- next skaville ja to hitsville usa,chester,25 april
City Bar hosts the UK crowned heads of Ska & rocksteady Prince Floyd & Sugar Merchant plus Londons Icon C with Champian from Tighten Up keeping it disorderly. In the Soul corner we've got Clive,Trotter & Me with Northern & RnB & Bradfords Kegsy playing 70s crossover. Find out why clever people travel from North, South & Midlands for this. Ska like : Tribute to Nehru, The Mill Man, Shake It, Eyes Dont See Rocksteady like : Fair deal, Heartbreak Girl, The Last Dance, Put Down Your Fire Not just Northern oldies either : we get enough of them thru the door..... Nij PS Bar address should be City Rd NOT Station Rd- Most Difficult Choon To Dance To
Salvadors hard to dance to??? Maybe now in me dotage but thats just an age thing & f**k all to do with the tune at all. At the Torch people got killed in the stampede to get on the floor when the first bars cut the place up. Mind you a visit to the medicine cupboard beforehand made most things possible... Nij- In Your Top Ten
Agree with that, top goodtime tune, always reminds me of Randy! Got to add the following : Too Late - Williams/Watson (Okeh) Its Gonna Be Me - Buddy Ace (Duke) Before 2001 - Rufus Wood (Espanola) You Really Made It Good to Me - Ty Karim (Romark) Its a Sad Thing - Ray Pollard (UA) Nij- Top Bar, The Torch, Tunstall, Dec 1972
Robbie Lang is a retired millionare in Naples Fla but still waiting to hear from the rest...- Top Bar, The Torch, Tunstall, Dec 1972
Chuck, Johnny, Robbie, Desi, Pete T, Melvin?? champion the benefits of conspicuous consumption. If this picture came with a soundtrack it would be Jerry Cook, no doubt....From the time when a Wheel badge, one black "Dents" driving glove & a braided blazer meant something...Nij (with the polaroid camera)- Bluebeat Etc For Sale
Sir, You'd do much better in the "honest" Northwest away from all those southern "Arthur Daley" types. Send me up a list and I will happily act as your guide through these treacherous waters. Your faithful servant, Nij PS All those red/white english Studio 1/ blue Coxsone releases are of no commercial value however parcel them up & send them to me & I will dispose of them safely without environmental concerns- Need A Realistic Price For This Please
Think you're looking at £120 or so. Demand for this one seems firmly in the soul corner. I was given my Gayfeet blank by a top ska man a few yrs ago who described it as "one o' dem likkle soul 'tings you like". Of course the Buster version is good too..."Earthquake in Orange St" only seen on Olive Blossom blank. Nij - Gerry & The Pacemakers
