  4. Lovin' this of late.....
  5. Cover or not this is still absolute Quality......
  6. Someone PROPER fooked up with this label - It says 'Soul' on it!...
  7. The biggest change in the scene in recent years is the demographic of those attending, most typical local soul type nights are now little more than disco's for 50 somethings with the people attending doing so because it's a late drink and night out with their mates rather than any desire they may have to broaden their taste in rare soul music. Lets be honest, you could put on a '20 Great Northern Soul Party Hits' CD every hour and as long as it's got Ruby Andrews for Mr's Handbag and the MVP's for Mr Handbag to dance to (after a suitable intake of Stella) then everyone goes home happy (and pi55ed). Once again it comes back to the usual case of too many DJ's with no where to play out their expensively put together ebay collections, meaning they set up their own venues which is all well and good except the only way to get numbers through the door is to play to the above 'Social Night' types meaning lots of repeats and VERY little scope for varying their playlist.
  8. Was Lucky enough to meet Tommy a few years ago and he a signed a few things for us, He was also more than happy to chat about the scene and all things soul. A 'Proper' nice guy and a true legend.
  9. I wish a few others would pack in the 'Magic Dancing Powder' as I'm getting fed up slipping on my arse when I go for a pint!...
  10. Only went to Wigan from 77 to 80ish which (I'm told) were the 'Pop years'.... Have to say though that old Dickie Searling didn't half play some good Disco tunes during this time!.
  11. The Baggytrouser The Handbagger The WhenI'mpissedIdancelikemedad

I thought the talc was on the floor to soak up all the old peoples little 'accidents'?....
  13. Fantastic piece of 'Northern' Soul. Wasn't it a Winstanley play?....
  14. Agreed!, Post comedy trousers - pre Phil Oakey Wedges
  15. Big in the main room circa 77/8, but not really an 'M's' tune as such - you sure you're not thinking of the early M's sessions?, ie before the main room itself opened.
  16. Only ever remember 'Elusive' from the main room, circa 76/7 onwards.
  17. Some of the above replies perfectly illustrate just how much the scene has changed, ie back in the day we'd travel all over the country via crap public transport just to listen to the music, these days most won't even travel any further than Taxi distance if it means they can't get pi55ed!...
  18. Never said I set any "Dancing rules" so you don't have to "abide" them, simply carry on as you have been
  19. Maybe the venues you've attended have a free for all when it comes to dancing but I'd think most people would say there are really only 2 styles, 'The 2-step' and the 'Stomp' (shuffle) and anything people do after that is just a variation on these basic themes. I'll say again, I'm not on about people who are bad 'northern soul' Dancers, it's about the people who arn't even dancing in a northern soul style, most of us have managed to watch and learn the dance down the years - why can't these people?... I'll take the 'Warm up/lesson area' comment as the joke I assume it was intended...
  20. There's no need to shout! - we heard you the first time.... If I was to turn up at my local soul night and start Pogo-ing around the dance floor gobbing on people would that then be Ok because I'm just 'doing my own thing and enjoying the music'?..... When I go to a 'Northern Soul night' to hear 'Northern Soul music' it's not an unreasonable ask to see a dance floor with people doing something approximating a 'Northern Soul dance' (strange request I know). I'm not on about people who are bad or good 'Northern soul Dancers' I'm on about the people who make no attempt whatsoever to even try to dance in a Northern soul Style, Now I'm not talking about doing spins, splits and handstands etc, just doing (or at least trying to do) a simple 2-step dance which most people blessed with the ability of movement should be able to perform. I don't think it's alot to ask that people show a little respect and courtesy to the history of what for the most part is a 'Dance' scene by at least putting in a few minutes practice before stepping onto a dance floor.
  21. Always loved 'Lips to your Heart - The Nightwatch' (covered as The Ellingtons IIRC). Massive at Station Rd but now considered just another Crap white pop record for the Wigan dance crowd....... apparently!.
  22. Nope!..... can't see anywhere where I said anything about it being a "Dance competition"... Sorry, but if you can manage to walk to the bar for a pint then you can manage to construct a simple basic 2-step northern soul dance - let's be honest it's really not that hard. The problem is people just make NO attempt to even try, they just do the typical 'When I'm drunk I dance like me dad' thing or perform a series of random moves lasting 2.25 minutes which in no way reflect the tempo or BPM changes of the track they're 'dancing' to.... I look at some people on the dance floor these days and think they must be wearing their i-pods as they're clearly not dancing to the same track as everyone else, add to this the number of people who seem to see a dance floor as the cure for their attention disorder and just do anything for the 'shock value' as long as it draws attention to themselves and you've got a scene that is just making a complete mockery of the music it's purports to represent. I shudder to think what some of the bar staff and glass collectors must think when they're walking around these venue's seeing these half pi55ed pensioners in bizzare outfits throwing themselves around a dance floor in this random fashion, I can only imagine they think it's a perfect example of why care in the community doesn't work.
  23. Perhaps, but there are clearly lots of people who really should accept that they 'Can't' dance and FFS sit down!.
