  2. Friends, colleagues, soul aficionados, vinyl geeks, music freaks, "Downtown Soulville" listeners: Pardon the intrusion, but it's time for that annual ritual when I come to you, faux-fur Alpine hat in hand, to beg you for money for the radio station that I have been privileged to call home since 1994. WFMU is a unique, mind-bogglingly great listener-supported station programmed by volunteers like me. Every March, for two weeks, we ask our listeners to give something back. It's a symbiotic relationship: We offer you terrific programming all year round; you pay whatever you can afford (and it's tax-deductible, of course!) to keep that happening. Running a radio station is expensive, and we don't have commercials or corporate sponsorship of any kind. We rely on your kindness to cover our operating costs. Our goal this year is $1.2 million. To make matters more urgent, we haven't met our goal the past two years. This year we really need to. And we make it more than worth your while to help us. This year, in addition to lots of cool prize giveaways during my show, I'm offering a CD I've put together called RARE AND COLLECTIBLE FINE WINE: 27 SOULFUL ULTRA-OBSCURITIES FROM THE CELLARS.* I must have been crazy to record this one...I'm basically giving away the keys to the Cadillac here: It's all one-off 45s from my collection, things that have never come close to being reissued, un-Googleable records no other collector owns, the ones that barely exist outside my living room. (There are "rare" and "expensive" records in the world; some fetch thousands of dollars on eBay. These aren't them! These are the ones that no one would ever even know to bid on! And they're insanely good!) All you have to do is pledge $75 or more and it's yours. Has a song you've heard me play on the radio made you Google the steps to the boogaloo, take your 6-year-old for a twirl around the kitchen, or just smile? Your pledge makes that possible. Are you a record collector in Poland who's heard me play something obscure via our live stream or our archives or my podcast and subsequently decided that you simply must add that 45 to your collection? Please donate whatever you can spare--I know times are tough; they're tough for us too!--and I'll do my best to ensure that you add dozens more records to your wants list in the coming year! As of this June, I will have playing soul 45s on WFMU for 17 years! If you can afford it, why not give the station a hundred bucks a year as thanks? Don't worry: I appreciate a $15 contribution just as much. Oh, here's a tangible result of your past contributions (and something that's reliant on your future contributions): the award-winning Ichiban stream, which I'm proud to be a part of! HTTP://WFMUICHIBAN.BLOGSPOT.COM Thank you for all past and future pledges. Apologies if you've received this more than once. 3. While most of the time as an American I'm indescribably jealous of all of you for being a part of this amazing scene, when it comes to matters like this, I don't envy you at all! Since I started collecting and DJ'ing in the States I have never felt constrained to limit myself to a certain kind of black sound; I have always mixed up more R&Bish and funkier records with the straight sixties soul....It's only at the real Anglophile nights around these parts that there's a bias toward strict northern, as you might imagine, though that's been changing the past few years.... On a related note, it may interest you to know that the formerly strictly funk folks I know around here who came to the music through hip-hop are now swooning over northern records!
  4. Then there's this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_McMillan (see "Personal info") Same dude.

  6. Just started up such a night in New York City this past weekend, "Slow Soul." (We describe it as "sweet soul, deep soul, ballads with balls.") We'll be doing it the first Sunday of every month starting in March.
  7. ...on Blue Jay. Anyone have a nice copy for sale?
  8. oh, thought a gouster was someone who dressed in a certain style.
  9. Yeah, ferns, fezneckys, gousters....
  10. Another feznecky record!!! I've got a record of theirs on Vantage that I really like, credited to Baby Neal and the Smart Bros.
  11. I looked for it for years before finding it on ebay! And then I lost the auction and had to pry it from the winner! Only other copy I know of belongs to Brad Hales in Detroit.
  12. Could it be the Tears, "Tears Move and Groove"/"1808 East Broad"? It's light blue. A-side is vocal soul; B is a Meters-soundalike funk instrumental.
  13. Anyone have one to sell? It's for a friend.

  15. Sad news from Detroit. No confirmation, but it's from a trusted source. Happened today.... site notes 2011 brings yet even more sad news with the departure of Steve Mancha (Clyde Darnell Wilson) The following informative articles detail his recording legacy. RIP Hitsville Soul Club Article by the late Alan Pollard on the Soul Train Yorks website On Christmas Day 1945 in Walhall, South Carolina a musical legend was born. Clyde Darnell Wilson, or as all collectors and lovers of Detroit soul music know him ... Steve Mancha. Clyde moved to Detroit at the age of five years old and by 1960 he was already singing locally around the Detroit area when he met another future Detroit icon, Melvin Davis. Melvin Davis was already recording for Jack and Devora Brown's Fortune Records.... http://yorksoultrain...allcamefrom.htm Soulful Detroit page by Graham Finch ...Steve then kicked off the groovy looking Groovesville label in October '65 with the great "You're Still In My Heart" and followed it up in March '66 with a Billboard hit - "I Don't Want To Lose You". This was the second of his five singles on the label - each of them a jewel of Detroit Soul. One of them is Tony Hester and Popcorn Wylie's first collaborations, "Friday Night", but sadly only http://www.soulfulde...teve-Mancha.htm Bio on Amg by Andrew Hamilton ... the record simmered on the charts, Mancha hit again, this time as 8th Day with "She's Not Just Another Woman," a song he wrote that was the same track on 100 Proof's debut album... http://www.allmusic....-mancha-p189499
  16. Great record! Just played it on the radio a couple weeks ago: https://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/38569
  17. Anyone notice the strong similarity between the bridge in "Forget" and that in Rose Battiste's "Hit and Run"?
  18. "Pusher" is a version of "You Fool, You Fool" by the Prophet and His Disciples on Pressco. Discussion here:
  19. Have long loved 108 and 113...119 is a grower...120 is insanely good funk... I'm missing a few numbers: 101, 106 and 107 (i think), 121, 126-128. Anyone know if these are any good?
  20. "Brown, Pretty Brown Eyes"/"A Perfect Wife" What an awesome record. Great organ part and killer vocals...instantly sticks in your head.... This is a clean, strong VG WHITE PROMO copy on U.S. Sue, my DJ copy for the past few years till I "minted up" recently. It plays loud and clear and beautiful through a bit of surface noise. There is slight ballpoint pen writing on "A Perfect Wife" side. (I use a M, VG, G scale with pluses and minuses; no E grades.) Here's a sound clip (NOT FROM MY SALE COPY!): $75 U.S. Paypal only. Email to reserve: finewine@wfmu.org
