Cheap at half the price... after all, how much did Ginger pay for his
  3. Yes Steve....and how mint was it . Still got quite a few things from that batch that came from Thames TV... all just like were were off the press. Wouldn't it be great if the BBC ever sold up their archives. Wishful thinking maybe Steve Handbury
  4. Hi Bob, If I can find the interview I did with Linda for Manifesto magazine I'll post it up. I asked about the two variants and she confirmed that it was merely a mistake on the labelling rather than there being two recordings. I have a studio take which is simply an alternative take rather than alternative lyrics and still uses "Goodbye cruel love" throughout. Hope that helps Best Steve
  5. I realise that Cecil has recently sold for in excess of £2k and there was some negativity as to the final sales amount. 6. Guess I'm just a dumb ass. Never really flipped records over. . . unless it was known as a double sider.
  7. Ian, Tom is a perfectionist. When he mixed "The Love I Lost", he sent me about half a dozen versions each time he tweaked it. There were differences but to the untrained ear it would have been barely noticable. His excitement at what he had done though shone through and he would point out 'Do you like what I've done there... Do you not think that it sounds better with...', to which I had to agree. Subtle differences lost on many are so important to Tom... and Tom is so important to the music industry. We have so much to thank him for. Steve H
  8. ....and about time too. Let's make this the best year for Tom since '76 Steve
  9. Alright Hovis.... How ya doing?

....and, I'm sure this was never played before Wigan. I looked up to the collectors of the time and none had heard it. I don't recall anyone yet saying the same of the best Sixties discovery of the last ten years as far as I'm concerned which is Margaret Littles. Unless someone can prove different.

There were no demo's that's for sure. I still have my copy. Believe there is one with a certain Carlisle collector. Think Andy R still has his. There's a few about but even if it amounts to hundred it makes it a rare record and then maybe worth something like the value it fetched on Mr Manships auction.... unlike, as an example, Jimmy Mack "My World Is On Fire" which was a local R&B hit which would have sold in quantity but throughout the early days of it's recognition on the scene commanded a £100 price tag and has since gone on to fetch ridiculous figures equalling Cecil Washington. I guess that really is the strange world of Northern Soul Steve

If I had to make a semi-educated guess I would reckon no less than 50 and not many more than a 100 but who knows Steve

How much?????? Jeez Arthur, you must have had money to burn back in those days. I got my first copy from Ian Clark which I then sold to Andy Rix after walking into John Manships shop in Melton one day and seeing a mint Cecil sat on the shelf for £60 and along side that was a Vickie Baines "Counmtry Girl" Issue for £50. Boy was I a happy bunny that day. Steve H

I'll definitely go with the '79 period. It was played as Joe Matthews for a good couple of years until Kev Draper turned up with the second copy and uncovered it at the Fleet all-nighters in '81. There was a real buzz that night when we all realised we were finally going to find out the identity of a record that had reached monstrous proportions courtesy of Richard S. Steve

Living close by to John Anderson I saw and got the pick of a lot of what Soul Bowl had to offer. I have to admit I only ever saw him list Little Joe Roman a couple of times and I think I'm safe in saying he never had it in bulk. It's a track I've never owned as an original and I've had much rarer things from him. Guess I'll stick with my boot then and in some ways agree with Pete S, not the best record but in many ways a Northern classic that doesn't rock my boat although if John had had it, I'm sure I would have bought it. Steve
  17. Nicely put Andy Best Steve
  18. Remember when Tats got that tape. Myself and Andy Rix were DJ'ing at one of Rob Marriot's do's in Mansfield one freezing cold winter's night when Tats told us what he had found. We went straight out to my car and shoved the cassette in to have a listen... needless to say we were blown away with not only the quality of the original recording but the stunning acapella version on there too. What a moment in time that was... Rose Valentine uncovered at last Steve
  19. You're a hoarder Mr Rix ... how the heck did you find that letter ??? There were definitely two different mixes that we got though unless I acquired it somewhere else. By the way, how much did they cost us, can you remember? Best Steve

The Archie Reynolds label was from Cisco but I'm damn sure I've seen another. Need to get me "Indies" out and check Steve
  21. Gonna have to get my thinking head on and my searching head. Way back when, around the time this was released and was just getting exposure, I got some $ together along with Andy Rix and sent off for some copies. There were indeed two different versions of 12" that arrived through the post some weeks later but we thought little of it at the time. I think we got around 8 copies, one of which I opened and DJ'd nwith, one of which (the different mix) I kept as a file copy and a couple that Andy had. The rest (and I don't know which versions they are as I didn't open them) remain in my loft still sealed. Interesting stuff methinks. If anybody speaks to Andy or if he sees this post, maybe he can shed more light on it Steve
  22. Enjoy the music, enjoy the friendship and most importantly... enjoy yourself in whatever way you feel otherwise you will be a sad individual (or an armchair record collector). I'm out of this debate
  23. Russ, Not getting into arguements etc but... Life is short... so enjoy yourself. Music should be enjoyed and appreciated in whatever way an individual or individuals decide to show such appreciation. Forgiveness... then forgive what they have done... maybe they were simply showing their appreciation for a great event. Maybe there are a lot of people who have smiled at what happened so no regrets. I'm not getting into the politics of promoters etc but... Richard and Kev lay an awful lot on the line for the events they promote. There have been many occasions where the good outways the bad. I didn't attend but I would say that the majority of people attending enjoyed themselves. Soul music is about feeling and emotion and, as such, it is expressed in many ways. The coming together of a group of people wanting to enjoy themselves should not be spurned or ridiculed. You have much camararderie in your job, moreso than many other jobs and the forces etc have their own way of bonding, celebrating and enjoying themselves in certain environments and situations. It's no different on Civvy street in a social world. That's not a personal attack. The whole thing is no different to friends hugging and saying goodbye in the middle of the dance floor at the end of a great, social weekend. If they were shagging then that would be a different thing, sorry for being crass, but that's how it is.
  24. Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile. Your footer Russ.... How ironic
  25. Northern Soul is about enjoyment, entertainment and a social gathering. Who is in any authority to decide how we behave, react or dance. If enjoyment is the holding of hands after a great weekend then so be it. For God's sake don't be so anally retentive. What's wrong with having a good time. Would you rather the weekend finish in a big kick off with fisticuffs, now how would that come across to those that don't know the scene... a throwback to the 60's mod vs greaser days. Things have progressed. Grow up and stop being "Soul Police". Nobody owns the scene or dictates what happens.
