The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
thanx for the mention mrs soul,(did mick introduce us outside worcester friday night?)...go go children in bristol does tick a lot of the boxes that people seem to want..BUT...although we play mainly rnb and northern and some funky edged there may be a little ska or even a couple of soulful british beat so i suppose its not strictly a soulnight.... we do play 'new' tunes every month as we are all collectors before we are djs but we wont play a tune because of its value, none of us can afford a tune we dont love and have faith in!...we do let the djs play want thay want(as long as its 60s)...there will be classics..but there will also be unknowns....we have older soulies who have been there and done it but we have loads of youngsters hearing this music for the first time...sometimes its rammed (120) and you wont have loads of room on the floor....but the atmosphere the youngsters create at these nights is brilliant..and it gets f****** hot!...everyone is friendly and we have a good sound, wooden danceloor, low ceiling and a balcony by the floor to chill out on...its taken a few years but even the youngsters are not taking their drinks on the floor...our guest djs have included sean chapman, pete tebbutt, des parker, mick lloyd, johnny beggs, trowbridge matt and a couple of local unknowns steve conner and rocker...and in the next few months we have matts return visit,dr pickles and big george weve thought about takin on downstairs in the club makin room for another 150 people but this would cost us more money so adm would go up from our credit crunching £3 and some people say would lose the vibe we have at the moment with one room...and ofcourse things can change overnight especially in a recession so will carry on as we are for now...3 years ago when we started we woud have hoped but really never have thought we would be as we are..but who knows it wont be everyones cup of tea but what night is...maybe theyre being polite but most people i know from the soul scene who have attended have loved it and its been said 'its like a breath of fresh air'.... i go out everyweek and enjoy almost everynight i go to but i dont want it all my way...like people have said search for the nights you like...live and let live a bit..and have a good time....the scene IS alive and kicking...maybe its you that are not dean

The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
oh nad none of this is unique to the soul scene either.... years ago i used to dj with a sound system playing dancehall reggae (long before sean paul ,shabba etc were household names) in norwich,...yes thats right,norwich....loads of people didnt wanna know, kept askin for something they knew..israelites,one in ten or bob marley about 6 years ago i was asked to be resident at a bristol indie night...tried to play great new bands, real indie...nobody danced..put pulp blur or oasis on the place went mental... back in the rave days of the 90s you could go to a techno or drum and bass night in 3 or 4 different clubs every thurs/fri and saturday in bristol...got to a point where there was too many...scene didnt die,its still there every weekend if you want it just fewer nights dean

Northern Soul - The Film - News, mainstream and more
i did the rave scene for a couple of years in the 90s before gettin bored...human traffic...brilliant film and just like the scene back then...it can be done dean

The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
yes in some areas there are too many nights...you would expect that those promoters who are the most passionate would be the better nights and even if numbers where down due to a shit promoter down the road,mr passionate isnt in it for the money so as long as he breaks even will be around after mr shit has given up..as hes not so passionate and also isnt makin money witha split crowd... yes there are many different 'styles of soul' (good name for a night, maybe i'll start a new one ) how can this be bad, whether a 3 room event or all in one just find what you like best, attend and enjoy...oldies,newies,rnb,funky edged...no ones right or wrong yes a lot of soulies will not be around in 5/10 years through difficulties dancin ona polished floor with with a zimmer..but maybe more twenties and teens who will be older, outgrown pop shite and not so bothered about dancin with us in our30s/ 40s who will then be in our40/ 50s will...who knows djs...maybe there are too many but as im one cant blame anyone for doing it...and some of the older ones will also give up in years to come...and as long as we keep the ovo policy i shouldnt have thought there would be as many starting...same old sets?...yes but as the the scene is split there are plenty who love to know everytune they are gonna get ...sadly...but again most of these are reliving their teens back in the days of wigan so wont be around for ever whereas those youngsters getting into it now are not so blinkered cos they dont know whats a classic and what isnt...and are getting into all sttyles not just 'northern' there are plenty of djs who play a mixed set, love what they are doin, but never get enough slots bad attitudes ?..probably due to the internet, people wouldnt be so rude face to face anyway i love the soul scene...NEARLY always enjoy myself and support loads of nights and i know loads more people like me so im not worried about' the end is nigh' some of us on forums take it all a little too serious and think without us it couldnt possibly carry on...others like me are havin a slow day at work see you out on the floor somewhere..i'll be the one enjoying myself dean

Bournemouth: The End For Northern Soul All-Niters In The South?
i went to the first night and had a great time BUT it did take me 2 1/2 hours from bristol!...personaly this means an overnight stay (driving back on twisty a roads after no sleep would be suicide for me) which puts the price up and its been a busy summer so have had to pick and choose...friday night with no motorway is a nightmare to be honest...i can get upto the gloucester niters on a friday in 3/4 hour and can get to stoke in less than 2...i think this may be part of it...cant speak about the south coast scene but if you add to that the recession...those locals who prefer just oldies...the locals who ARE just oldies.. its gonna be hard work and sadly maybe not worth tryin its not just alnighters though...martin pilnock worked hard with a soul night in weston and we expected more than the 106 who attended ...enough for a great night but not enough to break even...1 person from weston there i believe...martin will try again on oct 14th but if it doesnt work that will be one more great venue that will probably never hold another soul night its sad to hear when promoters have worked hard and nights have to close but we all know there are too many nights on,especially in a recession so 'thats life i guess' dean

The Next Generation
by the way im 44 for those who dont know me...never went to wigan my older bruv went to niters and i cut my teeth on the scooter rallies of the 80s... theres also a sequel to quadrophenia been written which apparently is a lot better than you might first think, has the backing of pete townsend and may be made into a film...history repeating? dean

The Next Generation
bearsy mentioned camber sands scooter rally..ive.only been going for about 4 or 5 years now djing in the soul room and i can really notice how many more teens and early twenties there are now to when i started...a few years back most of the dance comp were oldies puffing and sweating now the last three were all youngsters ( the winner only 16 according to the new scootering and she's been fourth for the last 3 years),infact some of the older faces who were there didnt even enter....give these youngsters a few more years they will have the money to go by themselves and not with their parents and to soul nites/alniters too i reckon...loads of young bands playing there influenced by the mod scene playing soul covers too kings hall was the same ,always been a few young faces most of which you recognise each time you go...this july shit loads ive never seen up there before...not just in the 70s clothes but also more and more of the mod look... as for djs and ovo...going back to another thread they might not have the money for the top tunes but as has been said there are loads of tunes they can afford..and anyway....we all started somewhere...plenty reissues and boots played at those youth clubs when you were younger! go go children in bristol (another big...ish city)has loads of youngsters some really into the soul/mod thing others just passing through lovin the quality music dancin how they wanna.... i think some people take OURselves a little too serious...this music will last forever, yes the scene will change as it always did before there was a nostagia side to it,it may get smaller but maybe thats a good thing...i hear wigan wasnt as good when it was popular after the mid 70s(TOTP etc) anyway... so dont panic..might not ever be THE scene of the young folk in general like punk, ska, new romantic etc but then again youngsters today dont seem to have big waves of certain genres like the good ole days...probably cos the 'charts' today are full of pop stars with half tidy vocals but are singing songs written by middle aged millionaires...so most credible young scenes today that are actually made by younsters are underground thats what i think anyway dean

Reggae Got Soul?
ha ha..can see this thread getting interesting..i better word this carefully dont wanna get wrong with anyone!! .there are nights ,my own included which play certain kinds of reggae and ska alongside soul and rnb,it works very well, the crowd love it and its advertised in advance, note i said CERTAIN kinds of reggae, even at go go children you wont hear, roots ,dub, dancehall, twotone or in fact anything after about 73 (although thats doesn't mean the dj's dont like it!!)....seans been finishing with that steph mckay(i think) vocal to double barrell for a while now and everytime ive seen him do it 'most' people have stayed on the floor ...i cant see the problem with the odd reggae tune at a soul nite...(told him after he had big balls to play it at kings hall though!!).. ....after all,l cant stand modern but have to put up with it at times in one room venues...and musically as far as arrangement and recording techniques despite being called soul, modern has no resemblance to the black american music i love, reggae(65-73) and early ska has more in common with60s rnb and 60s and mid 70s soul than modern does IMHO!!...infact studio one was 'the young sound of jamaica' nicked from motown as were the designs for the lps and a lot of the tunes they recorded were covers of soul tunes both comercially big hits and not...the producer coxsonne dodd would travel to the states and bring back loads of sevens to 'addapt'...the 'vocal harmony groups' of reggae like the wailers were all influenced by the impressions etc...its true i think to say if the states wasnt a short hop from the caribean and JA being in listening distance to the florida radio stations reggae would probably have never happened and jamaica would have just played a tuffer version of soca ... ...saying all this thought i dont think whole reggae sets are right for 'soul' nights...but then i also dont get annoyed when modern tunes are played...just have a well needed breather normally! ofcouse im biased despite buying soul records before reggae i was a reggae dj with a sound system for years before i started playing soul out...although even at go go i dont play any reggae, leaving it upto john s. but yes...as toots said...reggae got soul! keep on skanking oops i mean keep the faith!! dean ps the record sean played was out and out reggae...there are loads of jamaican soul/rnb tunes ofcourse plenty good enuff to play at soul nights...patsys version of blues in the night being one
