Playing Funk Records At Soul Venues
the carstairs has already been mentioned what about two other "northern" classics ohio players and world column hardly four to the floor detroit soul which i believe is what northern is 'suppose " to be but they still work...as does todays spins by angela davis or barbara lynns "good woman" another tune played on the funk scene for years ... i think the northern scene has always played different styles that break the so called rules but have the vibe and feeling we want....and thats the point...james browns "get on the good foot" is a killer funk record which i love but dont wanna hear at a northern night at the end of the day if theyre playing sumfin you dont like...have a drink and chat to all the friendly people just like i do when they play disco and house... oops i mean 70s/modern dean

Northern Soul Deejay's Of The Future ?
with respect dave shouldnt that be "post wigan" northern alnighter scene....i was too young to go but im sure ive read AND HAVE heard from people who did go that the flamingo, wheel and torch alnighters all played mod ,rnb, latin, ska and reggae (depending when they were ofcourse)alongside rare soul ,most of which was later called northern dean

Northern Soul Deejay's Of The Future ?
great thread good posts and no bitching ... callum...not sure where you are mate but bristol has go go children...city center venue...young and old...great music unknown to most AND THAT INCLUDES THE SOULIES! and it works....it can be done as for young dj playing boots..there are plenty of ,dos, that allow reissues aswell as scooter rallies and club dos where you learn how to use the dex and play a set (rather than random tunes)..weve all done it...and before you spend big money as has been said also lots of cheap tunes on original that can fill a floor...and if you search hard enough can get relatively expensive tunes cheap...maybe not a four figure ones bit still great rare soul...just got "shes got to have soul" by bobby blackmon for 28 quid...great uptempo dancer i havnt heard out and it books at 150...not bad i reckon agree its those big ticket djs getting the big allnighters and weekenders but gotta walk before you can run... as for the younger generation getting mortgages etc...i hope not !...i hope theyre are not tricked into getting into more debt than they can afford like our generation...most of europe do not buy but are happy to rent and ofcouse its getting harder now to get credit anyway....despite what the poitcians say its not all about getting a foot on the property ladder but gettin it on the dancefloor and enjoying your life!! dean

Northern Soul Deejay's Of The Future ?
and i meant to say with those youngsters will come the new djs !!...weve got a few ex hip hop /funk djs/collecters at go go who are in there 30s and buying and playing more northern today than hip hop.... but i agree younger and more unknown djs should get the chance to play bigger venues of today too dean

Northern Soul Deejay's Of The Future ?
think back to when you were 20 would you have gone to clubs full of 50 and even 60 year olds ?!....said before go go children is all ages but weve heard remarks by younguns when they walk in and see the older lot but then they see we can still move so they stay and enjoy it...and a lot come back ! for those venues with only 40 year old and upwards i think you will find as the older ones drop out and sell up to pay for their retirement more youngsters will come into it... just like when i got into two tone as a teen i started looking into what influenced that scene the youngsters into duffy, amy etc will hopefully start checking out 60s soul.. and then there are the youngsters going on scooter rallies...i know of one who is now a dj and pretty good too...at the moment he can only afford boots and reissues bit im sure in years to come just like most he will start to spend more when he can... i think this scene and music is bigger than all of us...yes it will have ups and downs like any other....djs will play slightly different styles but hasnt that always been the case from the wheel to wigan to stafford to the increase in rnb and funky northern of today as for the price of tunes what about the europe and us scenes getting more popular..was reading an old 'that beaten rhythm' last night from the 90s with rumours of an allnighter in barcelona...15 years later and there are regular niters all over europe....maybe in 10 years they will be older and have the cash to buy the mass of expensive collections for sale in the uk panic ye not...i reckon anyway dean

Advice Wanted
slightly off topic but "whats the royal all about"..not really sure but it is a pain in the arse ! reminded me of this.....i was selling some lp's to buyers abroad...two in germany and one in sweden all for the same ammount and was waiting for the addresses...i made a right 'royal' f*** up...the addresses were so similiar ...on one i put the swedesh street but germany AND in a rush didnt put senders post code!!...realised couple hours after leaving post office, rushed back and the asian couple behind the counter tipped out the sacks on the floor looking for it but like they first thought it had already gone......i rang the sorting office and eventually got through to a jobsworth w***** who told me they couldnt change the address even if they found it OR right my post code on the back...why ?...because as soon as you put it in the box its property of the queen and can not be touched in any way as it was against the law to do so..."and you wouldnt ask me to break the law would you sir (no but id like to break your face!...thought it but didnt say it),we cant pick and choose what laws we want to obey ...sir"... got in touch with both buyers explaining things and hoped their mail service had more common sense and less red tape...they said they would check it out and i never heard back from either or had any bad feedback so can only asume they got more help than i did and eventually got their tunes dean

Mainstream Usa Tv - Northern Mention
well the uk one is fimed in bristol...and down here at go go children we DO get more youngsters than the average soul night...des parker once told me it was like a night he plays at in the states just a bit smaller...at the moment !...nicci knows one of the 'skins' black girls parents so maybe we should have a word...get the producers down...maybe have a dance off  dean

If You Can Help Please Do So, Ta Very
just had to do much the same thing...on wednesday was on sean chapmans radio show and he asked me to pick 6 tunes that meant something to me...not my fave tunes of all time but were more interesting to chat bout little queenie-bill blacks combo..can remember being 6 in '73 and playing my dads first issue uk copy..along with his motown and my gary glitter etc can still rememer thinkin 'bill blacks combo'? they sound shit ! but i loved the tune what more-zz hill...great cheapy thats hard to find and one of the first tunes that got me back into the soul scene about 7 years ago after a big break djing reggae..started sllipping it into my reggae nites in bristol turning a few heads ! how could it be-esquires..another cheapy that should be played out more, came across a soundclip by accident on a website and was well chuffed when i later found it for a fiver riding for a fall-delroy wilson...killer rocksteady and the first tune i paid (more than a tenner)20 quid for ! i can feel it-carl carlton...niccis choice really but i love it too and for the same reasons..sooooooooooo much emotion ih his vocals someting funny going on-bertha tillman...recent discovery and over the last few months the most requested of my tunes at go go children would have also put... hey little way out girl-del capri(corperation) first northern tune i bought aged 11 in 78 on grapevine freedom-clancy eccles...killer bluebeat id been looking for for years till i found a ex sound system original copy for a couple of quid..hardly ever hear it out kaya-bob marley..name of my scoot back in the 80s and my fave vegetable down in the tube station-the jam...wow ! had an effect at about 14 that i will always remember...story telling to music at its best so there you go not all soul and not my fave tunes of the moment or all time ,i dont even play some of em much but when i do they take me back to a single moment in time which is more interesting me thinks dean like i said not my top ten as they would be dont pity me,love slipped...,if thats what you wanted etc..no real reasons other than theyre great records and i liked em

Packets - Anyone Else Waiting
dont want to talk anything up but in many years of getting and sending vinyl through the post only once has a record been lost (although received 2 broken ones)...the lost one was in last years snow... a few i bought from the states and italy in december where a couple of weeks overdue but got here..although i asked for tracking info for one and saw it didnt get sent for a full week after id bought it !...personally when sending i try my best to send the day after payement i give my postie a break, have left my mobile number with the sorting office, when a tune is in they put it to one side and ring me...i go in and as soon as they see me they give me my record so i dont have to que for ages while they hunt all over the place for it...there system seems to be a bit odd, first they look here...then there..then there .....and three windows with only one worker on most days! but when my regular posties is off ive had others put cards through my door....when im in !!!...and worse still a couple of times left under my scooter with the card saying 'left under 'motor cycle' (WTF!) ...as instructed !! WTF again !...had to go down and complain about that one...blatant lie dean

Why Did The The Casino Survive Through The 70's
as ive said before never went ot the casino or torch, way too young and lived miles away but as i understand it wasnt the torch in a more residential area than the casino...even today its venues/pubs nthat are more residential that have problems with councils etc....and the casino was a lot bigger so a 'raid' could have been a lot more tricky?... and in reply to dogstoats post....its great to read a post from someone so passionate as a lot of us are but to be honest i dont believe we are unique in that.... the mod/scooter scene is still very much alive, has been for over 40 years...there are weekly nights on and rallies all over the country with people who have never got out of it since the late 70s and sometimes the 60s !....hip hop may be underground but has definately not come and gone....i know people the wrong side of 40 just as obsessed with reggae as soul, will pay just as crazy amounts of money for originals too....i think the one area we do differ and can feel proud of is the distance we will travel to go to a night...not sure any other musical followers do that...certainly not weekly !...anyway thats nuffin to do with the original post so i'll shut up ! dean

News: Top Tips For 2011
SOMETHING FUNNYS GOING ON-BERTHA TILLMAN-BRENT...... dont know if anyone else out there is playing this, not seen it on any play/sales lists....but out of all my new spins at go go children down here in bristol it seems to be picking up the most requests from long time soulies and newcomers alike... not in manships book ,picked it up off chapman records a few months back...described as mod/rnb dancer which it is but its also soulful enough not to be called 'rock n roll shit ' by rnb haters !! and its loads better than 'lovin time' dean
