  1. I paid with magic jumping beans, but it wasn't to Mr Kyser…
  2. Always so difficult to pick a top 3, top 10, or top anything. It all depends on the day, the mood, etc, etc. Having said that, I reckon these three are doing it for me at the moment... Mr Lucky - Freddy Hill & the Reno-Bops - Ru-Tee Hit Cookie Jackson - Do you still love me - Progress Carrie Grant - Take all of my life - New-Art
  3. Here are pics of both sides of the 'Robby Lawson' disc. As mentioned, one side has the track "I have searched", which is the flip to "Burning Sensation". The other side has a track with the title "Poet". "Poet" is a nice dance track although the lyrics are a bit cheesy in places. Is it by Robby Lawson, did it get released - and if so, on what label? All info appreciated.
  4. Also available as a fine and probably much rarer French release... https://youtu.be/GBGkf3bE8GQ
  5. Eureka! It's not a version of the Del Capris - it is the Del Capris. Thanks for the swift ID, Sebastian One down, one to go...
  6. Got hold of three tracks on acetate, one of which is called "I have searched", the flip to Lawson's "Burning sensation" on Kyser. That sounds like a different take/arrangement from the only clip I could find of the track, which was a snippet in the iTunes store. Soundfile anyone? On the flip of the "I have searched" acetate is a dancer titled "Poet". On another, single-sided disc is a sweet soul number called "Love ain't the same anymore". Anyone tell me what label they came out on? Thanks.
  7. You prompted me to have a further trawl online and I saw that on a Soulful Detroit thread (from 10 years ago) you mentioned that there could be interest in an Airwaves comp cd and that "There might also be some curiosity value in the Art Posey... [tracks]". Curiosity value? And did you have any contact with Posey back then? Further digging reveals that he's still making music, primarily through collaborations with an established poet/songwriter by the name of Theresa Haffner. They perform as a duo known as PH Factor. Songs in the main seem to be reworkings of standards such as "Stormy monday", "God bless the child", etc, along with Haffner's own material, all of which can be found on YouTube should anyone feel so inclined. There's even a 13-minute 'improvisation' of Jaggers/Richards' "Satisfaction".
  8. Not him, I'm afraid. Bill Berry the jazz trumpeter died in 2002. https://www.nytimes.com/2002/11/19/arts/bill-berry-72-jazz-trumpeter.html
  9. So, anyone with any insights at all about the Isaac Hayes/Steve Cropper/Don Nix 'rip-off' of "Find My Way", or who Art Posey is/was? And what about Johnny Melfi - still alive or not? No-one..?
  10. Yes, I've been wondering that, too. Had a trawl through Google, but the trail was cold. Anyone know? (And see you tomorrow night, Paul!)
  11. Amazing what you can find on a 78! https://youtu.be/7NDEr4ZI8Wc In this case, an unreleased recording from The Ramblers, a group* that would evolve into the Fabulous Playboys and The Falcons. * Background on the group(s) known as The Falcons & The Ramblers: https://www.uncamarvy.com/Falcons/falcons.html
  12. I was sharing some new-found information with Paul (Soul Shrews) about this track and he suggested it might be worth adding it to this old thread so, as he worded it, we could put the mystery to bed. First off, as a reminder for those who can't be bothered to start from the beginning, this is the track in question - an unidentified version of "Find my way". https://youtu.be/cumvDC3hiEw Not so long ago, someone by the name of Willem Berry posted up to the YouTube video the following information: Wow, interesting stuff, and whoever the poster is, they seem to be very close to the musical action! This then is the same Art Posey who recorded "No more heartaches for me" on the Scope label out of Detroit. And here's Art and Honey... Listening to that track, and Art and Honey's "Let's make love now" on Motown, and it seems a pretty safe bet that the mystery "Find my way" vocalist is indeed Mr Art Posey. Mystery solved? I certainly think so...
  13. Have to agree completely. The swallows, swifts and martins arrived here all right, but they're not here in the same numbers as last year. If they're not here then it's because food is in short supply. Happily though, it looks like we're on track for a bit of summer now, and that might buck up the natural Eco-system and get it back on track. At the same time, it's not stopped the slugs getting at the fresh green shoots of everything we're trying to grow in our mini greenhouse and patio space!
  14. They're not, to quote the thread title, "songs copied by 60s bands to make their names"?
  15. Anna & Chains featured on the Beatles No1 EP, which, as stated, reached number 24 in the charts. Looking back, I can't see any rider that says cover versions have to be on singles only. Nor do I see any rules that state the original versions have to be 'soul'. Have another read of the thread title and opening post. I think perhaps you're being a little too anal.
  16. A quick flick through the NME top 30 singles charts has been quite enlightening, and lots of fun. (Am I the only one who gets real pleasure from going through reference books?) With my limited knowledge, I'm sure to have overlooked loads, but here's 15 that made the top 30 from 1963 to just early April of the following year. I've given what I think is the highest position, but as it's a manual compilation, I'm probably wrong on lots of them. 1963 Kenny Lynch - Up on the roof - 16 Julie Grant - Up on the roof - 20 The Beatles - Twist & Shout - 4 Brian Poole /Tremeloes - Twist & Shout - 5 Brian Poole /Tremeloes - Do you love me - 1 Dave Clark Five - Do you love me - 25 The Hollies - Searchin' - 10 The Beatles - Anna / Chains - 24 Bern Elliot & the Fenmen - Money - 16 1964 The Hollies - Stay - 8 The Searchers - Needles & pins - 4 The Swinging Blue Jeans - Hippy hippy shake - 2 Cilla Black - Anyone who had a heart - 1 The Hollies - Just one look - 3 The Swinging Blue Jeans - Good golly miss Molly - 11 Of course, this is only from the top end of the charts. The real number of cover versions from this time must actually be quite staggering. Anyone know if there's a reference book/site?
  17. The thread is called "List of all the songs copied by 60s bands to make their names". Shall we start with The Beatles? As far as chart action is concerned, define 'major impact'. In my view anything on 45 that made the top 40 back then had 'major impact'. As for albums, shall we start with The Beatles?
  18. From a British perspective, you may as well just print the NME singles and album charts from the early 60s onwards! There must be 1,000s of cover versions from that period.
  19. The more expensive stuff - obviously
  20. I mean on YouTube... As well as leaving a comment on YouTube, you can click the 'Like' button. There's only one 'Like' for the clip, and that was me a few minutes ago. Go on, show her even more love. You know you want to...
  21. You could have 'Liked' the clip as well...
  22. As the topic of conversation turned to man's best friend a little earlier, I thought the dog lovers might like this shot, which was taken on the beach at St Andrews. The dog in the photo was having an absolutely marvellous time of it, running in and out of the sea like a mad thing and leaping over oncoming waves. Don't think I've ever seen a hound so happy as this one. It most definitely was a salty sea dog!
  23. Finishing it and publishing it are different matters, of course, but what a book it would be!!
  24. When I'm buying from Pete or anyone else from the UK, my rule of thumb is 'signed for' on purchases of around £30 and over, and postal russian roulette on anything under. Have to say though that when I first moved to the Netherlands in late 2007, the service from the UK was dreadful. I've never had as many lost packages as I did for the first couple of years. Happily, the service improved considerably and I've not had a package sent 1st class go missing for ages. Oops, perhaps I shouldn't have said that!
  25. Plenty over here, and we're only a degree or two warmer.
