I remember Plumby having a shed load of cheap US 45s at Soul Essence some years ago and most if not all had metal/ali inserts pressed into the large hole. I believe they came direct from the USA so the US must of had 2 types of juke box is my guess, otherwise why put middles in that were put in after they were manufacturered? Plumby can defo say where they come from but my memory recalls them being ex juke box stock. I was pushing the different ones out and telling everybody I collect them........I do. The Man In Black
  2. Thanks for that Jaco, do you have any background info on him? Dave
  3. Hi all you trainspotters, matrix number crunchers and generally good old soul boys(and gals) who know a thing or two about SOUL Music I need help on a singer named Roy Smith? He appears to be quite spread out on a few labels so I was wondering if you can help by posting what tracks and labels, numbers etc or general info you have on him, that you have in your collections/books etc. In case they are 2 or more Roy Smiths I am assuming he is the same one on United Artists,Vanguard,Delphi to name a few. I would like you all to name everything you have even if its obvious please. Many thanks Dave Halsall

Jackie Wilson.........................................by far Maxine Brown....sorry Gladys she pipped you to this one girl MB live and recorded. Phew I would marry her if the boss (Tina) would let me. Love her to bits. Dave Halsall
  5. Just remembered why I bought the red Lundy, it has a different B side to the blue Lundy and the record number is different so it may be a later press? All I gotta do is find the sodding thing. more questions????? Dave Halsall
  6. I have all three labels, cant find the red one though but pulled the 2 blue ones Julmar & Lundy. I cant remember the red label being inferior sound quality though, but might be wrong. IMHO I think the blue Lundy is a USA press as the quality on the vinyl and sound is great compared to the West Indian pressings? Brad may of been living in the Bahamas and thats his contact address as well as label address, as his later releases on Lundy are out of New York the same as Julmer. (Check out his deepish aching track "What would you do" on Lundy LR11940 (1977) It may of been Bahamas address for tax reasons? The Julmer is defo 60s production/style both sides, while the Lundy (blue) is defo 70s production both sides. So New York (Julmar) to the Bahamas (Lundy blue) and then back to New York (Lundy 1977) ?? sounds a bit wrong IMO. Also his 1977 release on Lundy is the same label design as Julmar but in orange rather than blue/white, so there must be a strong connection for him to of used the label design for 2 labels. Dont you just love Soul music history???? hardly anything written down and its left to Sherlock Holmes and us lot to sort it out Hope this info is of help? Dave Halsall

Cheers Adey Still got a nagging question as to who Towana Hill was on SH from 1978 though?? Seems odd there was someone recording by that name on Kent Harris label from 1978 with a different surname. Was Tys daughters surname Hill? Dave

Not been able to stop playing the fantastic Ty Karim CD that Adey C. & Kent Records brought out. Reading through the sleeve notes there are a couple of questions or avenues which I would like to explore or dig up some more info on . This is in no way having a go at the info in the booklet or Adey (he knows that anyway but there will be a few out there that will post a go at me for supposedly having a go at Adey???) Now I was sure that my 45 wasnt Part 1 & Part 2 but cant find it, so I may be wrong. However I have a Sheridan House 12" with an 8 minute version of "Keep on Doin' Whatcha Doin" not Part 1 & 2 as listed on the CD and the flip has Ty & Towana featuring O'Malley Jones doin "Catch Action" which is not on the CD despite the CD covering all of Ty Karims recordings. Question : Has this track been overlooked or have I missed something along the way? I am pretty sure the other copies that I brought over late 80s early 90s were the same but cannot be sure. Anybody else got this track on the flip side of the 12" ? In the CD booklet it also mentions that Towana & Ty were prehaps one and the same, well if this is the case then it begs the question who were these 2 on Kent Harris's label? My info on the label Sheridan House had an artist by the name of Towana Hill who had a 1978 release "Tell me how it is ", so again was this the Towana of "Wear your natural baby". If it is then it throws a lot up in the air on Ty Karim. More questions than answers, so if anybody can start with confirming the flip to the 12" then we can go from there and if anybody has a copy of the Towana Hill 45 then that info would be of great help. Adey ............Dont BAN me from Cleggy for this mate. Sorry Dave Halsall

My copy has thick vynil, scratched matrix numbers but both labels are missing, does this make mine rarer than all the others?????? What is it with us Soul music collectors, we always seem to put labels above the track! You pays your money and takes the chance so to speak, I think we have all been caught in someway if we were honest about it. Whatever happen to the old adage of "its whats in the groove that counts"? Can anybody enlighten me on how to tell an original CD from a repressed or boot, as I am filing my CD collection and want to get the system spot on from day one. The Man In Black
  10. Strange label name considering what it means/stands for? Never seen it though, not that strong a record soulfully. IMHO Dave H

Soul music is Dead??? I'm taking up archealogy!!! Hang on a minute I have spent my adult life diggin up old soul records, no change there then, so whats new? Soul music has never appealled to the masses as a whole, even when it did, some parties decried this as sacrilage. While the quantity is not what it used to be I would not concede quality is not still about, you just have to look harder. The demise of live acts in the main is because artists do not need to tour to make money or indeed take their product to the masses........the internet does this for them now. Soul music is Dead....Not in my book or even in my record room, for those who think it is, then please leave me your soul records in your will, I am sure there is loads I dont have or even heard yet! Dave Halsall
  12. Both sides have been spun in the Down Beat Lounge (now the Jim Wray Room)at Soul Essence in the past in a couple of my sets. Both sides of this 45 by Pandella Kelly are heavily linked to members of the OJays, written and/or produced by their members, Levert, Massey & Williams. A division of Saru Records who the OJays also recorded for. Defo 1971 onwards release as Bobby Massey left the OJays in 1971 to become a producer and this track was co produced by him. Sadly no info on PK. Dave Halsall
  13. That'll stop the Bast**d DJs scratching records though, as theres nowhere to put your fingers. The Man In Black

Never had a problem with Tim Browns auctions or his lists since day one, all records I have had, bar one have been in superb or described condition. The one that fell through the quality control was not an auction item but he replaced it with no questions asked and was told to keep the fualty one ( it was a £20 record), but even so like most Uk dealers the customer service is good. To be honest, never had a problem with any of the main dealers, either mail order or one to one, we are quite lucky in that respect as you do hear some horror stories from across the Atlantic, Channel etc. So Tim, John, Pat etc the address for your PR cheques to Dave Halsall c/o ............ I think T.Y. was covered up as the Tempests, if my memory serves me right. It was a massive tune at the Leighton Buzzard allniters. Got my copy back in the 80s of a guy called Pablo from Milton Keynes. Traded it for Gene Chandler "Check yourself" which was unknown back then and as he had 2 T.Y and I had 2 G.Cs we just swapped 45s. Dave Halsall

Flip the 45 over for "As long as there is you" for an incredible dancer. When I have included this over the years in the spots I have done, it has raised a few eyebrows to say the least, it is that good. A very underated side considering its the A side!!!!! The Man In Black

Cant agree with you on that. As I have stated before on other threads about JW he is IMHO the greatest male singer to have walked this planet!. His versatility across 30 years and the styles from R&B, ballads, dancers etc, not to mention duets and his Count Basie stuff. Name me a singer that can carry off that lot and I might consider them or even concede but none come to mind....not Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield Otis Redding, Sam Cooke et al. The Man In Black
  19. Most of them been cover by previous posts. Last 3 or 4 DJ spots dropped Tony Martin - "Ask any man" on Motown. Big voice, big production quite an awesome dancer and very under rated and under played IMHO. Dave
  20. It (Love Potions - This Love) also came out on Retreat Records. |i suspect this is a reissue label but have no defo info on this. But it is another release to add. Dave Halsall
  21. I have a pair of leather soled shoes that were made circa late 50s, Got them from a shoe factory that was closing down in Rushden in the late 80s.They were a sample pair and were in a glass display cabinet in the foyer and I always had my eye on them when my ex got a job there. Cannot remember the name of the factory but was around the back of the old cinema near the police station Still got them a bit tight now but still fit. Crackin pair of dancin shoes and I got them for nowt. Dave H

Nev Great tune, great shout , I have just reviewed this in latest issue for Soul Up North. I think a couple more copies are about than the article suggests. I know Bob Cosby played it on Solar Radio last month as a guest so thats at least 2 more My shouts for 09 1. Tradewind -Price of love. Tradewinds. A great northern style dancer not many copies about, but there must be others about somewhere and when you start looking who knows. 2. Millenium - Joy . Blue Boy. A bouncy modern gospel dancer that gets you going with a cracking female lead. 3. Lyn Defino - Such a hard one to lose. Prowlin. Now this is the dogs balls IMHO, not sure if its known as its not listed, I have spun this a couple of times last year and it just builds . If this gets picked up it will go big style. A modern dancer and very catchy. Of the 3 this might just surprise even me if copies can be found as most of the Modern DJs will like it. All the best for 09 Dave Halsall
