  1. If say the Dynamics and Ronnie Shannon are on a Black Gold Detroit label that would make at least 3 of the 5 designs Detroit, one memphis and then the Lou Pride black gold label from circa 1988 Clear as mud as they say Dave
  2. Baz It might well be as my info is by no means gospel just whart i have to hand, i cant find my Dynamics x 2 on Black Gold or my Ronnis Shannon which might have some more definite info. ENGLAND winning 1-0 Dave
  3. There are 5 different Black Gold label designs to my knowledge. One out of Memphis circa 1960-64 and then change of design from 1973 to 75, which has a Dynamic release on it. However the label design changes again but the numbering cointinues at #8, again a label change at #113 to a Black Gold design that is the same as my La Jay Alexander, but is listed under a previous design. I suspect the BLack Gold design with the pirates chest of gold, is a design used on the promo copies? ( I could be wrong but just sumising based on info and without having all the records in front of me). Then there were 2 releases by Lou Pride on another design circa 1988. This must be a seperate label as the numbering starts at 113 which would make 3 different releases on 3 different labels (2 by the Dynamics and one by Lou Pride) As far as my info goes its a Memphis label????? with the second design (1973/75) being distributed via Vigor out of New York. From Black Gold #8 they distributed by PIP thru to #113. Stir that lot around and try to make sense of it. I Will try to label list later if anybody is interested Im off to lie down (or watch England, either way I'll end up with a headache The Man In Black
  4. Most people walk this earth and leave without anybody noticing.. In the world of SOUL music Richard 'Popcorn' Wylie certainly left more than a footprint., his music will be testament to that. RIP Dave Halsall
  5. There was a time that this scene of ours called "Northern" brought people together, sadly from what I have read on this forum and have heard at other venues, it is more divided then it every was. Most of us have got older and we should have got wiser, it would appear from posts not only on this thread but others that this is not the case, NS lovers seem to be less tolerent and more self opinionated then ever before. Personally I put it down to peoples ego's. If someone is picked for a spot at a venue the knockers/backstabbers are out and on about what he is going to play or has played. If a promotor puts on an event the knockers/backstabbers are out again....and guess what the knockers/backstabbers are from within our scene. There was a time when it was the police/council et al trying to stop our enjoyment now its ourselves. WE will be to blame for our own downfall, we are imploding because we do not tolerate things outside our own perspective of what OUR music is. Let me pass this scenerio at you. If you stop Oldies/nostalgia/reunions etc completely, then those soul fans who want that type of soul music will have nowhere to go. So the progressive style venues who wish to play underplayed/new discoveries and dare I say new releases will be swamped by those same people (who you seem not to want) because they want to dictate the type of music being played, by sheer numbers on the floor or not, as the case maybe. If they have oldies nights then thats where they will be, then so be it, you can stay away, no need to comment really, go elsewhere. I dont like heavy metal but i dont go around moanin about it. I have had some great nites where the attendance has been low, thats mainly because the few souls that are there are like minded soul fans and its not about whos got the biggest venue, attendance or even most valuable records, its about the music and thats whats its all about. It used to take a good year at least to get a new venue off the ground and get the soul fans in from around the country, mainly due to the music policy, hard work and dedication by the promoter and the DJs, nowadays it seems they want instant success and at times the methods adopted to slag off other venues so as to promote their own leave a bitter taste in my mouth, because we are supposed to be soul fans with a common bond, sadly in the main I think that has now been lost. Reunions etc are not really my cup of tea, but hey!!! wheres the harm. No need to get shirty and slag people off. Just stay away. Right I've got that off my chest, I'm off to watch the para olympics and watch people enjoy themselves. The Man In Black (aka Dave Halsall)
  6. tough one to call but one that does it for me is "Summer Comes Along " ...by the late Daryl Pediford on Kryptonite Records out of NYC. It was written by DP and he played the Saxophone solo on it. Absolutely awesome. produced by James "Booty" Neal. 4:15 minutes of indie soul heaven. The Man In Black
  7. Gav You can use me name if ya want have placed it against it before on here, Only about 6 people sussed it by the clues though...Reforee and T.M.I.B. Its not hard is it so if you want go ahead The Man In Black Must dash so catch anything else later. DH.
  8. Gav Like the idea of the movie projection and material for the next Soul Essence. Tinas a big Bowie fan so at least you will please one, Not sure about you previewing the stuff on SS though it will spoil the surprise. Does Sue know your taking up banner room space on the walls. When you tell her make sure Im out of the country The Man In Black
  9. If you want comedy records then get the Bill Cosby Albums, (THATS Bill not BOB COSBY ) had them since the 70/80s and they still make me laugh. I have also in my collection(somewhere) some US 45s about Shaft versus the President or something like that cant remember the label so it would take me a while to find em, they were early funk meets rap but funny. On a serious note I had the record Mark B. was looking for but did not rate it , i tried to sell it but to no avail, so in desperation I tried to throw it away .........but it kept coming back The Man In Black
  10. The BEST venues with the Best DJs are where the real fighting takes place, I mean, if it dont come down on top big style , then how on earth are new records gonna get broken? Most of the top Djs must of had a good scrap, as they are always giong on about they broke that record at that venue etc etc. Its either that or they are clummsy fools. The Man in Black
  11. Reforee replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
BUYER BEWARE All it needs now is for anyone of those owners to claim that certain records of theirs have been lost or stolen and they state that they are easily identified, as they have ther name scratched into the run out groove I can just see loads of collectors scratching names out as you read this Im not even gonna start looking for any scratched names through my collection, mine are all identified as they all have holes in the middle and are round. The Man In Black
  12. Heres a couple that have been bubbling under for a few years Billy Jones - I'll keep holding on" Dutch Pink elephant The Flyers - "Mainline is sunshine" German Toledo Both great 70's dancers Billy Jones has been discussed on here i think , while the Flyers is a track that Ged Lunt put me onto a few years back at Soul Essence. The Man In Black
  13. I'm with you on that wave length , all we have to do is persuade the others and all would be well in the world, well the soul scene anyway The Man in Black

  15. When it comes to politics and backstabbing then the Northern Soul scene beats even the Houses of Parliment. I have supported Ian Levine during his Motorcity days (just listen to Joe Harris & Carolyn Crawford - Aint understanding mellow, what a version of the original). Ian and Colin Curtis along with Richard Searling were my top DJs back in the early days, however they have all played and even said things that I have not agreed with but I have never felt the need to verbally attack them . Prehaps we ought to take it a bit further an throw rotten fruit & veg at DJs when they dont play a record or set we dont like. Now I know Ian can wind people up without trying, but when it comes to putting tracks out he wants then its up to him, like them or not, you dont have to buy them, or play them and he certainly has no control over other people buying or playing them. Some of the tracks IL has been involved with have been very very good, others not my cup of tea, I have in the past told him that, but that is MY personal view. When it comes to "tailor made" then again thats IL choice and even his ego might play a part, which is larger than average, but that is Ians personallity coming through. If that sound "floats his boat" then so be it. Take our soul scene, the records are very similar in tempo, but no one on here is saying Berry Gordy all the Detroit producers and all the other USA label owners/writers/producers were not "tailor making " their records! Of course they were, they were chasing the big hit, the big bucks, so lets not be precious about it. You talk to any artist/songwriter etc, their latest record is the best ever so their egos come into play, some of my favourite Soul artists from the 60s have egos I dont personally like and they have brought their halos crashing down when I have met them. Even Bobby Taylor made an LP abot tailor made soul , so its been rife since the year dot. A personel attack on IL to me smacks of other underlying reasons which have nothing to do with Soul or even music. While it makes interesting debate it should be honest debate and not become personal. I will say one thing IF Ian IS making his music aimed at the Northern scene then I am glad he is not using my money, because he certainly will not make a fortune, because OUR scene is small, a new record, beside getting shunned because its new, often does not sell in quantity, only to die a death becuase only a handful of copies get sold. 20 years later some DJ picks up a copy spins it, it hits the right spots and hey presto it starts to sell for £100+ and every Tom Dick and Harry wants a copy, and Bill & Ben and all the Flower pot men swear blind they have had it for years and bought it as a new release. Now what does that remind me of ????? The Man In Black (aka Dave Halsall)
  16. When Al came over here in the late 80s early 90s I remember him saying that he was astounded at the price it was fetching on Fynal Vynal (then about £100) he had recieved very little from this relaease from the promotor etc he was with (not saying anymore due to posible implications) but he decided to release it himself on the Bunky label as he knew the label owner and felt safe with them. So Al actually brought the Bunky release out as he owned the rights so its as legit as any other release , but he got paid. Cant recall the actual label design of the Bunky release, but if my memory serves me right its looks "dodgy" from other Bunky releases????? Still got his signed photo on the wall in my record room, alongside others. Great bloke and singer. What a great time I had with indie singers then over here, Clifton Dyson, Roy Galloway, Byrd Pressley, The Waters,Garland Green etc etc The Man In Black
  17. Most of them covered for me .....Howeefeel, etc etc, but one that has slipped off everybodies radar is a great little 70s dancer by Joann Williams "Maybe Tomorrow" from 1977. The Man In Black

  19. Heres a few details for you anoraks LADD RECORDS Box 514 Raceland Louisiana Debbie & the Lads featuring Debbie Falls. #104 A side. The man who comes around (Tucker/Lair/Green) B side. Dear lord above (Virgil) A side. A pretty average popish record, definitely white female. B side. An awesome Northern dancer. The song is actually about her love going to war (Vietnam I suspect due to the era this recored is from) and her prayers for him, one of the best Vietnam songs alongside The Bitter & the Sweet (both sides)
  20. IMHO Its a great northern dancer and pretty rare, i have copy, but paid no where near the price of around the book price of £1000, not listed in JMs book so prehaps he has never had one for sale. Only ever seen it listed twice in over 20 years. Would consider a serious trade or over £1000 to part with it. most of the top Northern DJs dont have it as far as i know, thats why its never played out. The Man in Black

  23. Bidding up happens all the time, ever since auctions started, from construction machines, cars and sadly even records. It only takes 2 to bid up togo way over the price, depends on how much YOU want to pay for it. HOWEVER if someone is bidding on their own item, then thats a bit to sour in my mouth and if i were to find out someone had done that to me just to get a higher price for their item then they would certainly make an enemy out of ME???? watch your back!!!!!!!!! I make a note of ebay bidders on items and funny enough have had second chance offers for items, which I very seldom take. With JMs I never bother making a note really as never felt the need to The Man In Black
