Worst Record Played On The Scene
Is this him being punished for recording 'Pretty Little Angel Eyes' and 'Under the Moon of Love' earlier on in the 60s thereby giving a number one to the horrific Showaddywaddy? Seriously, 'Is She In Your Town' sounds very much like him and his band trying to imitate Elvis circa '67 trying to imitate a blues group. Having said that, I rather like it...

Sugar Pie Desanto Checker Lp Promo
Looks like a great LP. 'Going Back To Where I Belong' is a superb track; I took an age to find a decent 45 copy on Vel-Tone. Since this is a Checker LP, I assume the version on this is a re-recording? Does anyone know?

Wigan Casino
According to a Keb Darge interview, he had enough when he went one night and they played The Who...when did this happen? Towards the end I imagine.

Pete Meaden - Jimmy James & The Vagabonds
Not too disimalar to Andrew Loog OLdham's rants on the back of the early Stones LPs. Now didn't Meaden work with Oldham and the Stones at some point? Maybe he is another one to try and contact. I also think Meaden worked with Georgie Fame as his PR guy.

Southern Soul Vs Northern Soul
I suppose you can differentiate between the more rootsy music produced in Memphis or Muscle Shoals in the 60s compared to the rather more slick material that came out of Detroit, which in terms of musical style i.e - 'slightly delayed back-beat' is the fundamental cornerstone of the 'Northern soul sound'...er, isn't it?

The Life Of A Northern Soul Record
Well the 'ultimate rarity' "Do I Love You" gets played by Kenny Burrell on a regular basis. It's quite interesting seeing £15,000 revolving at 45 rpm...

Pete Meaden - Jimmy James & The Vagabonds
As for 'Scene' playlists...When I lived in London, I worked with a guy called Pete from Barnes who used to frequent the Scene Club. As a 1979-era mod (boy, did he scoff when I told him that...) I asked him about the sort of stuff they played there, I was quite surprised when he said that along with the expected early Motown and RnB material, there was also a lot of stuff like Jerry Lee Lewis's or Ray Charles's country recordings, loads of slow blues, doo-wop, 'Brill Building' tunes and even calypso music played. As he pointed out, this was 63/64 and 'soul music' as we know it now really didn't exist.

The Life Of A Northern Soul Record
It's when you find records that have been 'personailsed' by their previous owners either by scratching their name in the run-out grooves (seemed to be popular with DJs once upon a time) or writing on the label or sleeve. My favourite is a French EP of the Mar-Keys with 'George from Fulham High Street. I brout (sic) it in 1965' on the cover. I still wonder who George from Fulham is whenever I see that record.

Car Boot Sales
Oh, I keep at it! Less stuff found than when I was a student or on the dole of course, due to less free time. But I know in my heart that there's some nice old lady out there whose long-lost son left all these old singles in his bedroom and would I like to have them? "They've got these big red or greens 'A' on them!"

Car Boot Sales
Just went out for a quick wander in the 'charity shop district' of Edinburgh - Stockbridge, if you know the city - stopped off at a couple of places to look for the usual; vintage suits, books, videos and records. And the first place I go to turns up an excellent copy of 'Long After Tonight is All Over' on Stateside for 99p. This sort of thing isn't supposed to happen any more...is it?

Bad Vocal Side
The legendary 'Peanut Duck' of course...

The Rave Scene/soul Scene
One thing I always thought different about the rave/clubbing scene compared to Northern Soul was the total lack of any social division in the mass of people who were into it. It simply took over a whole generation of young people and introduced them to the pleasures of gettin' on down. Northern Soul was, and maybe still is, a fairly working-class pleasure that mystified many of my fellow middle-class friends when I described it to them. "You mean you go all over the country to dance all night to records? How odd." was the general reaction! Fast forward a few years and the same people were all heavily into dance culture. The drugs sure helped I'll admit!

Cant Stop Playing It
A truly great record Roddy - in fact I've been playing the download on Soulgirl's jukebox a fair few times this afternoon after reading your post. Myself, I FINALLY got a copy of June 'Arthur' Alexander's Sally Sue Brown on Judd. An important piece of southern soul history and a near mint copy too. Now to cut up that credit card before I ruin myself!

Credit Crunch
Last four records I bought cost £15, £8, £250 and £25 respectively and to me they are all worth owning as I regard them as little plastic works of art (they sound good too). If I have to do without other consumer goodies for them, then so be it. But saying that, my credit card has now been cut up...no more temptation for a while!

Is Nothing Sacred ?
Poor old BB has already had the misfortune to have one of his best songs 'Turn on Your Lovelight' covered by the dire Grateful Dead amongst others...hasn't he suffered enough for the blues?
