I almost sure the first version of "The Real Thing" was by Tina Britt. If you go by Billboard, the Tina Britt version is mentioned in April, the Betty Everett version in May and the Chiffons (as the flip of "Nobody Knows...." isn't mentioned until June.

According to the liner notes of "The Real Thing- The Songs of Ashford, Simpson and Armstead", "The Real Thing" is a reworking of this earlier ASA song-

It probably was repressed for "Way Over There" which wasn't one of the Miracles biggest hits but did make it to #94 on the Billboard Pop charts. I've read it was a big hit in many regional markets but never really took off nationally.

As far as I can tell, it's just a late 60's repress of the 45 . Here's another one -

I'm not 100% sure but... the most likely explanation is that they released the record the 1st time around and nothing happened. Maybe a dj started playing later and it became a hit so they re-serviced the record . It could also be they decided to put out a different mix or a longer version of the song. It was a way to differentiate this new version from the original release. Here's the original shorter version without the harmonica solo.

Don't worry about it- I didn't know about the George Benson version. We're all here to learn something. First released version was Young Holt Unlimited's version of "Soulful Strut". Then came Barbara Acklin's version "Am I The Same Girl". The song was covered by Dusty Springfield and Swing Out Sister - I'm sure other versions exist.

Please disregard the earlier post- I've seen promo copies of both the 2149 and 2172 mixes on both black and blue Arista label promos. Both are legit.

John Manship also has a video on you tube and calls "Don't Turn Away" an unreleased track. The video showing the Atco label used this King Curtis 45 for their mock up version -
