New Joe Boy Precisions Album And Ep launch at Prestatyn 2008

The Joe Boy and Inferno labels are being revived to jointly issue an EP and CD album by The Precisions to tie up with their appearance at Prestatyn. The album tracks the complete Drew label single releases incluidng the withdrawn "Sugar Ain't Sweet".

1 - Such Misery
2 - A Lover's Plea
3 - Sugar Ain't Sweet
4 - Why Girl
5 - What I Want
6 - If This is Love (I'd Rather Be Lonely)
7 - You'll Soon be Gone
8 - Instant Heartbreak (Just Add Tears)
9 - Dream Girl
10 - A Place
11 - Never Let Go

plus bonus tracks
12 - I Do, Don't You
13 - Such Misery (unreleased Ist version, featuring Paul Merritt)
14 - Send Me A Sign - Roger Fluker
15 - Baby You're Mine - Lou Ragland

George McGregor (Rose Battiste,Terri Bryant, Barbara Mercer, Timmy Willis etc) was A&R director at Sidra/Drew. He has written a foreword to the album in which he says The Precisions on stage dance routnes were so amazing they put everyone else, including The Temptations, in the shade. He says that if the group had been on Motown they would have been major stars. Turns out that George recorded "Mr Soul Satisfaction" - Timmy Willis at his own cost. He did it at Muscle Shoals to get the Southern Soul horns sound and then took the master to Sidra and did a deal with them for it. They subsequently licenced it on to Veep and the success of this meant George got the job as A&R director.

He knew The Precisions from when they were on D-Town and he joined Sidra after "Such Miisery" had been released. He decided to base the sound of the group around Billy Prince as lead vocalist and co-wrote "Why Girl" to capture the sound he envisaged. At the time copies of "Sugar Ain't Sweet" c/w "What I Want" had been pressed as promos to be the second Drew single but were off centre. Rather than remaster them George took the chance to get rid of "Sugar Ain't Sweet" which had been put together by Dale Warren as the A side of the single and replace it with "Why Girl". I imagine any spare copies of "Sugar Ain't Sweet" were junked and this is why it is so rare.

George was partners with Mike Terry at the time and got him in to arrange the recordings, most of which were done at Terra Shirma except for "If This Is Love" which was laid down at United Sound. He has revealed that the female intro to "A Place" was done by Sandra Neal, who was a secretary at Sidra, because no female vocalists were around at the time!

The bonus tracks are recordings that never got released by Drew. "I Do, Don't You" was a massive tune at the Trentham Gardens al-nighters and has been the cause of speculation as to whether it is The Precisions or not. George still has the master tape and says it definitely is the group, he wrote the song and produced the track, with Mike Terry doing the arranging.

Track 13 is the first version recorded of "Such Misery" and was tried using Paul Merritt on lead vocals. He left the group shortly afterwards and his version was not used for the first Drew 45.
This version wes previously released on a Joe Boy single credited to Timmy Willis due to duff info.

"Send Me A Sign" was thought to be The Precisions in the past but is in fact the group's choreographer Roger Fluker. His dance routine inventions were so important to The Precisions that Drew let him make a record!

"Baby You're Mine" is another Drew recording credited to The Precisions in the past. It is in fact Lou Ragland.

There is also an EP coming out Why Girl Instant Heartbreak I Do, Don't You Such Misery (Paul Merritt version) Both the EP and album will be on sale at Prestatyn.

Any record dealers interested in buying stock at Prestatyn should PM me.

All the Best

Russ Vickers Blog from 2008

The Road To Addiction............
Posted by Russ Vickers, 20 February 2008 ·
It's the Spring of 1977 & my whole life was about to change forever..........working class family, Comprehensive School education, small town or should I say village upbringing in a typical Midlands semi rural setting. I was 15 years old & for almost 10 years the sound of the Rare Soul Underground had been pounding in the hearts of the 'In Crowd'..........to which I was completely oblivious !!!.
I have alway's loved music. My memories from a small child were full of The Beatles, Elvis, Johnny Cash & many other pop hits of the time, that my family would listen to on the radio or the old record player. I was allowed to play the old 45's lieing around too, so from quite an early age, I was 'spinning tunes'.
At school we talked about T.Rex, David Bowie, Roxy Music etc, but filtering thru the 'Glam' via the school disco I started to become aware of soul music, commercial disco really, I would go to my local record store & buy a lot of these 12's, I would also consult Blues & Soul for the recommendations & eagerly await thier arrival to be picked up at the store, much of my pocket money, would be spent in this way, & much to my Mother's consternation & the obligatory cries of 'Turn that Rubbish Down' I would play them constantly........I still have some of those early purchases.........& boy are they embarrassing now, but I wouldnt part with them for the world....... I still didn't 'really' get it, I enjoyed these records, but my heart was yet to be totally captured......the hairs on the back of the neck, had yet to raise to those truly soulful rythmns..............but the journey had began....... oh & what a journey.

Article on the death Of Tiny Topsy from Jet mag 1964

From JET Magazine, September 3, 1964
"Tiny Topsy", a five foot, 250-pound-plus entertainer, whose name in real life was Otha Lee Moore Hall, died in Chicago's Cook County Hospital of a brain hemorrhage and scores of show business folks mourned her passing.
Tiny, 34, married to a South Side Chicago night club owner, Samuel Hall, began her career in the all-negro Chicago suburb of Robbins at the age of five. She eventually worked with such well-known figures as comedian Dick Gregory, the late "Blues Queen" Dinah Washington and Bandleader Red Saunders. She belted the blues, ala Big Maybelle, one of her idols, and was a lightfooted dancer despite her bulky figure.
On hearing of her death, comedian Redd Foxx, Saunders, and tenor saxist Paul Bascomb raised a "sizable" donation at Chicago's Regal Theatre in her behalf.
She is survived by her father, Casey Moore, of Chicago, in addition to her husband. Eight pallbearers, nearly all members of the band that played her husband's club, were required to lift her body.

Kettering Soul Society - Cornmarket Hall - 9th February 2008.
A really nice venue, easy to find with a large carpark just outside and with a great polished wooden floor. I Had been told by a few beforehand not to expect much music wise but we were pleasantly surprised by the good selection of 'Across The Board' music that was played by the residents throughout the evening with all of them playing great sets.
Many thanks to Steve Towers & Trev Davison for inviting me to do the Guest Spot we had a great evening. The crowd was a bit low in numbers but with so much on and especially the Rugby Anniv. just down the road that was probably to be expected.

DKOF Peterborough - 5th October 2007
Another great night at DKOF last night, numbers were a bit down on usual but there was a great friendly atmosphere and everyone seemed up for hearing some different tunes and all I spoke with at the end said they'd really enjoyed the night. Mick, Ray and Neal all played some great stuff (hopefully they'll put some playlists up later) and Tony Parker excelled himself with a blinding spot. This is certainly now one of the best nights in the area for rare and underplayed soul............all credit to the DKOF Lads for making it happen.............Can't wait for the next one on December 22nd.

Al Wilson - New Kent Cd Out Now Searching for the Dolphins: the Complete Soul City Recordings and More

Kents got some new cd releases out, the first one that gets a highlight is a comp from a familar name
Al Wilson - Searching for the Dolphins: the Complete Soul City Recordings and More 1967-1971
Release notes clip below
IIn The Basement magazine carries a Vinyl Spotlight feature, which look at twenty tracks from LPs not available on CD, and also picks one ‘special’ album to cover in its entirety. Way back in November 1998, in issue #8, the in-depth scrutiny was on all-time top-tenner, SEARCHING FOR THE DOLPHINS by Al Wilson. I summed up by saying “This set deserves like-for-like CD reissue, not least because my vinyl is worn out!” Well, it has taken a little over nine years for my wish to be granted but the wait has been worthwhile. I can wallow in Gene Page’s splendid arrangement of Fred Neil’s The Dolphins, interpreted by the magnificently rich vocals of Al Wilson and lovingly produced by Johnny Rivers for his own Soul City Records in pristine sound quality.

Born in Meridian, MS, in June 1939, Al Wilson settled in California after serving with Uncle Sam, singing in local clubs as a solo performer and working in a line-up of the Jewels, which subsequently became Liberty recording artists, the Rollers. Passing through Johnny “Legs” Harris & the Statesmen and its metamorphosis, the Soul Brothers (as the drummer) Al met up with ex-Motown staffer, Marc Gordon, manager of the Versatiles (who became 5th Dimension). He took that group, along with our man, off to the fledgling Soul City company. Al had to be patient with the label to get his first record released but, after a handful of 45s and chart success with Do What You Gotta Do and The Snake, the stunning “Searching For The Dolphins” album hit the streets.

Do What You Gotta Do, penned by staff-writer, Jim Webb,...

45s Still In The Customs Shed
Posted by Dave Moore, 26 January 2008 ·
Just thought I'd log the events of our move to Spain and vent a little frustration at the 'shower of s*i*e' that are/were our shippers. We've now been in the new place for 5 weeks. STILL no furniture but more of a concern than that is....no records either! The container arrived in Valencia on 8th January (12 days later than originally agreed) and has sat in the customs shed since. The US company that we contracted have turned out to be the most inept, inneffectual, lacksadasical arseholes I've ever dealt with. I've done a few moves around the world including one other Transatlantic move and all have been relatively smooth. This move is enough to make me wanna 'revert to type' and go back to the US in order 'straighten out' the w*nk*rs. We have now dealt with 5 companies down the chain on this move. Each one is part of the mechanism for an international move but is sub cotracted by the mover not us.
The problem is....they simply don't pay their bills correctly or on time, therefore the Spanish end of the move won't release or deliver our goods until they receive payment. We tracked the shipment, organised the receiving agent, obtained customs clearance, and are now sat waiting for the US company to pay the bills (we've already paid them of course). After at least an hour a day on the phone to the US trying to get people there to realise their contractual obligation we received a bill for an extra nearly two grand! When we did some investigation it was mainly penealty fees because THEY had missed deadlines with paperwork at the point of departure! Have finally whittled it down to 500, although that amount is still due to their incompetence with my motorcycle, we've decided to pay all the bills and try and recoup it from the shipper. Otherwise those liccleblackplasticfingswotweluvsntreshures are gonna be sat in the customs shed til God knows when!
On a lighter note, we now have the satellite connection installed for the phone link and so are fully hooked up on broadband etc now. The files for Issue #7 of There's That Beat! are due at the printers on Monday morning and Jason and I are now feverishly nailing it together between gallons of back coffee and sticky buns for sustainance.
Looking forward to getting out and about to gigs on a regular basis again. Hoping to make the Pisa Allnighter in Feb, followed by Prestatyn and then the Valencia Weekender mid April, at which I've been asked to play a few 45s. Have recce'd a bar in Mojaca with Jonathon for a gig with the Indalo Soul Club starting March 15th and am in the process of pieceing the components for Hitsville Soul Club's annual vinyl-fest together so things are moving on a pace soulwise at least.
All I need now is something to sit on, a decent night's kip in a bed and my bleedin' records!
If I hear "Can I help you with anything else Sir, Have a nice day" one more time, some Yank is gonna 'get a slice" for sure.
Transatlantic Flap On!
Posted by Dave Moore, 30 November 2007 ·
Last year we decided to relocate to Spain. The magazine will still be based in the US and I'll be popping back over on a regular basis but the lack of quality soul events with like minded people has just proved too much in the end. Hey Ho, had a good time, but itchy feet syndrome got the better of us once again. Anyway........had the movers arrive yesterday. A young Israeli was in charge and the two young Guatemalens with him worked their arse off all day. Had a good chat with the Israeli lad (Tony) and found we had a lot in common. He and I have both spent time diving in the same region of the Red Sea and have both spent time at Wadi Rum and Aquaba in Jordan. Then blow me down if the two Guatemalan lads didn't come from an area I have also traipsed about in, in a 'former life". Bev made 'em lunch and I fed 'em cheeseburgers later on.
They did a great job ......until it came to the vinyl. They packed it while I was away on an errand. I returned to see my 'babies' stuffed into a few massive cardboard boxes, many of them laid flat, some upside down and padded out with bits of paper!! Argghh!! I then gave them a lesson in vinyl maintenance (in case they ever pack up another anoraks house).
We repacked every one of them. All in proper crates, right way up, color coded by US/UK origin, and with the loving care and attention that 35 years of building the collection deserves. They thought I was a freak! (Bev agreed with them )
So....I have a 200 box I am manhandling back to Europe and the rest ( about 7000 45s and about 1000LPs) are now 'Bobbin' in the Oggin' for the next 3 weeks or so along with my other prized possession, my 1991 Softail. Bev reckons that the seperation from the 'babies' may well prove to much for the ole ticker and I may throw off this mortal coil before we are reunited with them.
So.... we leave in a week after we've administered the subscribers of the magazine and once everyone's latest issue is safely in the mail and en route, we're back to UK for a weekend (hopefully in time to catch Ronnie Walker's live performance at Chris' NCSC gig and then onto Espana for Chrimbo.
Should see us out and about at UK gigs on a more regular basis next year. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
'til next time........

Soulie Meanderings
Posted by Dave Moore, 20 October 2007 ·
Done bit of wandering about the last few weeks, been a little snowed under with the mag, Hitville SC website updates and other soulie stuff but finally got a few minutes to jot something down'
Hitsville Weekender III now behind us. Had a great weekend with Fergie, Al Pollard, Greety, H, Kev and the girls and the US and Canadian contingents proved to be die hards once again too. Lots of highlights but the two main ones for me were:
The Harthon Guys. To play their records and have them see the type of response their music evokes in people was a real treat. All three of them were blown away by it all. We despatched them back to the airport in a mahooosive limo and the smiles on their faces were priceless.
The Music
Probably the best weekender I've been to as far as the music was concerned. Got to hear all the rare oldies as well as some newer stuff and lots of left "fielders" too. We don't get a chance to dance to music of this quality too often here in the US so I take full advantage and try and get on the dancefloor as much as my "organising duties' allow. The young US DJs are the dog's gonads. In yer face rarities mixed with relatively unknown records and they play to each other as well as the dancefloor which is great. Who cares if the dancefloor wanes for 10 minutes if your playing something worthwhile. A great few hours from The Californian Central Soul Club Crew and Chicago's Rare Soul Millionaires.
Had one 'downer' which was a guy from the UK didn't enjoy it. Fair enough, can't please everyone, but if you travel all the way to Florida from UK for a weekender and then go to bed at 1am at the allnighter then I don't think you've really got into the spirit of things. Ah well, as I say...can't please everyone. The other 70 folks seemed to be having a blast judging by the dancefloor.
Once packed up and everyone eventually despatched home Dave Fergie, Myself and the girls went up to Philly to cover a few of the city's soul landmarks, meet some of it's musical icons and see the Tymes perform. We spent a day at Philadelphia International Records and had the run of the place, including Sigma Sound B thanks to Chuck Gamble's kind generosity and Weldon MacDouga III's ability to get us in anywhere! We also spent an afternoon at Frankford Wayne Mastering. Including an unforgettable trip to the Master Tape vault!
A planned hour's lunch with Weldon, Jimmy Wisner and Billy Jackson turned into a 51/2 hour marathon! A truly fantastic afternoon in which Dave and I were enthralled by stories of Philly's soulful heyday by three legends who helped create it.
Lot's more on the Philly btrip in Issue #6 of the magazine out in December.
On the 27th of this month our soulie adventures continue when Dave Fergson flies over for the weekend as we take a hop skip and a jump down to Tampa to see Billy Paul live on stage with three Chi Town legends. Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler and Sam Gooden and Fred Cash of The Impressions. I think we're taking them to lunch, so full report later.
Hoping to make Guy Hennigan's 50th bash on 3rd Nov in Derby so if I make it....see some of you there hopefully.
'Til next time....good hunting...
A Year In The Planning
Posted by Dave Moore, 04 September 2007 ·
It's Tuesday 4th September and I'm just about to start 4/5 days of mayhem. The Hitsville Annual Weekender kicks off on Thursday Night and between now and then I'll be spending most of my time at the airport in arrivals picking folks up and ferrying them down to the resort or DJ Villa.
Thought I'd use the blog to put a few thoughts down for future reference as it's about to become a bit of a blur for the next few days...
Had some major dramas with the sound equipment this year. Finally sorted but not without clashing heads with the biggest arsholes in the DJ supplier world I've ever come across. I bought a great set of Technics 1210s a year old and fitted new tonearms. Figured in for a penny in for a pound, so took advice from Soul Sources own King Of The Karaoke Pete French and set about purchasing new amp. speakers, cabling etc. Then figured I'd install new headshells/Grado cartsidges and styli. Sent off for the needles to Jerry Raskin (Needle Dr) and the head shells and wiring kits to TopDJGear in NY. Carts and needles arrived. No head shells. Cut a long story short, two months and about 50 phone calls later, still nothing but excuses from what I can only describe as a set of neaderthal morons who seemed to think that because they were 1500 miles away it was ok to constantly try to blow smoke up my arse. I eventually reordered the kit from California and it arrived 4 days later.
Being a bit of a beligerent bastard, I wouldn't let it go and hounded the actual owner of the company for the next three weeks. I used a contact, got his cell # and called him twice a day to update him on what my plan was to destroy his business. Website, Ads in DJ mags, Blogs, personal protest outside his home etc etc. Lo and behold....package came last week. Complimentary headshells, wiring kits and a couple of new groundwires! Tosser!
This years T Shirt is being delivered tomorrow, the new log'd slipmats have arrived and the new wireless mics are en route.
Anyway...kit all assembled, and tested. Sounds fantastic. I'm sure the guys this year will hear the difference. (Hope so, it's cost enough!)
The Hitsville Weekender started when a few long time mates, who also collected records, came out to visit us in Orlando, Florida. It started out as a party at our place but we couldn't accommodate everyone at our house so we hired a room in a hotel. Then we thought, "why not get a dancefloor in?". So we did. The first one was in 2005 and this is our third one now. It's still kept the same atmosphere and ethos of the first one and it's something I have been warned by the guys to ensure stays the same. Just about everyone who comes is a record collector. The whole weekend is geared around collectors who dance. A sort of Dancin' Chinstrokers convention. The UK and US contingents compliment each other perfectly and the whole thing is just a great get together of like minded people. Of course because we only get together once a year there's lots to catch up on and hopefully some vinyl trading along the way!
This year we have three VIP guests joining us in the form of Weldon McDougal III, Luther Randolph and Johnny Stiles, the owners of Harthon Records from Philadelphia back in the 60s. We're setting up an in depth question and answer session and a couple of radio interviews that will be recorded and put up on the Hitsville Soul Club site some time later.
We're all off to BoMa Restaurant in Animal Kingdom on Friday night before the soul night (9-4am) which should be great and then Saturday we have the afternon radio session planned when the guys will double up and play stuff not usually heard or not targeted at the dancefloor per se. Then it's off to Bahama Breeze (A Carribean restaurant), for some great Jamacian Jerk'd up food before hitting the allnighter 8-6am. At three in the morning we serve up pies, pizza etc to sustain us for the push towards dawn. A quick couple of hours kip and then up to the DJ Villa for an afternoon by the pool/jacuzzi and some more sounds before the now legendary Indian Meal in the evening by the pool!
Another great piece of news is that my old mate Alan Pollard and his wife Judi are gonna make it again this year. Al's not been well and had to miss last years. Be great to have them both back in the fold.
So..First pick up is at 2pm this afternoon and the guys trickle in from UK, California, NJ, Chicago, NY over the next couple of days. Loking forward to hearing all their sets and especially on Saturday night as I'm relieved of DJ duties (Yippee!)
I'll post a report up after the event with some of the tales of vinyl comings and goings. Wherever you are this weekend, have a great time....we certainly intend to!
Slip mats look pretty cool eh?
Loma Records Suck!
Posted by Dave Moore, 12 August 2007
No not really......it's just that I've been putting the finishing touches to a feature on the West Coast Warner subsidiary and I can't seem to locate one of the 45s on the label. Offending vinyl is - Bob and Earl - Everybody Jerk b/w Just One Look In Your Eyes - 2006. Lot so people have been helping me trace the record but no one's come up with one or a scan of it! As I suffer from "completion disorder" I'm dreading putting the feature in the mag with one of the scans missing! AAARRGGHH!!
Have also had a nightmare with a certain DJ supply store in NY. Once I have fin lly got my money back - or made a trip up there to take a look inside a certain store owner's spleen, I will relate the story here.
The upside to this dark tumultous period in my life is that we have tracked down Johnny Brantley's missus. JB was the man behind a number of great soul productions including - Sam Williams - Love Slipped Through My Fingers - Tower - Unfortunately he has passed on, but his wife may have photos, anecdotes and info that will finally allow his full story to be told.
Another plus is that I managed to pick up two W/Demos that have eluded me for a while. Mr Fred Bohn of Attic Records came up trumps with a copy of The Exits - You Gotta Have Money b/w Under The Street Lamp - Gemini W/Demo and I'm finnally completing the Bronco label when Viola Wills - I've Got To Have All Of Your Love - W/D drops on the Moore doormat on Tuesday hopefully.
Only had to return one record this week. EBay strikes again! When did VERY GOOD ever mean POOR! Marv Johnson LP Promo too! Gutted!
Biggest bonus of the week...my old Mate Alan Pollard may make the Hitsville Weekender in September. Great news. He was missed at the last one. 4 weeks to go. Can't wait!
Til next time....
Sound Equipment For Weekender
Posted by Dave Moore, 24 June 2007 ·
Spent a frustrating couple of weeks sorting new sound equipment for the Hitsville Soul Club. Got some heaveyweight collectors coming down to spin their wares and want to make sure that the kit is up to the job. Had too many instances myself of being asked to DJ somewhere and turning up to find steam driven turntables with screwdrivers for stylus! Problem is everything has to be "shipped" here in the States. Can't just jump in yer car, trundle down town and buy it. Not in Florida anyway! Most things delivered end up being - Wrong stuff , (Not what you ordered), damaged, or just don't show at all sometimes! So I ordered some bits and sat back with low expectations.
Anyway ..managed to gut a nice set of Technics 1210s delivered. Arrived during the week, all flight cased up. Checked 'em out, all in great minty condition. Luverrley Jubbly!
Speakers arrived the day after from a company in New Jersey. Top blokes. All well packed.
Ordered new heashells, wiring kits and a couple of high grade GRADO cartridges form TopDJGear. Aha...new I was on a roll and it was too good to last. 3 days after I ordered the stuff got an email - "on back order". Back order my arse! They simply wait for an order to come in and then place that order
themselves with Technics, taking a nice slice for themselves and passing all the shipping costs on to their "customers". Told them to "poke it ". I'll do the order direct myself.
Got some advice from the King of UK Kareoke etc, Pete French, and am now awaiting delivery of a Peavy PV2600 amplifier. (Cheers Pete). So...for anyone bringing vinyl to The Hitsville Weekender, either to DJ or do one of the Radio Shows...you can rest assured that everything has been done to ensure your records are played using decent kit and will sound immaculate.
Can't wait to hear Greety's Chuck Holiday and Detroit Sounds Of Friction, out nice and LOUD!
Later.....

Diary Of A Psychotic Mag Editor
Posted by Dave Moore, 13 June 2007
Not really had time to do the blog part of Soul Source justice up to now, but have squeezed a spare 15 minutes out of my day to start one off. Although I suspect I will only be talking to myself, it'll be a good way to put things down and remember them if I need to in future. So..
THERE's THAT BEAT! - Update
We finally got the Quark files for Issue #4 to the printers! Preparing this Issue has been a nightmare! In addition to having an IT crisis (which is still not fully resolved), 3 months solid work all culminated in an allnight session with Jason and I using MSN Messenger to relay our communication in live time, whilst making all the Editorial corrections to the magazine features. Must say it worked a treat but at 4 in the morning and on your 8th cup of coffee you begin to wonder if the effort is all worthwhile! Of course the minute the magazines are delivered you know it is! We completed the work less than an hour before the print deadline!
This Issue should have been capped at 48 pages but unfortunately Jason and I are soulies first and foremost so we couldn't find it in us to cut anything out therefore it's actually 56 pages long! As usual it's all full color, glossy images and rammed full of stuff.
Couple of highpoints whilst preparing this Issue were:
During the Harthon preperation I got to speak at length with all three of the main players Johnny, Luther and Weldon. I'd met Weldon and Luther before along with Bill Oxendine and a few other Philly 'soulsters" but it was my first time with Luther. All three of them are complete gentlemen and kinda remind you of a bygone generation where integrity, manners, and a positive outlook was more the norm. I hope they think we did them justice in the feature. It was an experience I will always treasure.
We were already preparing to publish the Mike Terry story when the original contributor unfortunately pulled out and we had two options:
1. Cancel/Postpone the feature.
or
2. Create it ourselves.
We chose Option 2. Mike Terry's contribution to the Rare Soul scene ranks up with the likes of Van McCoy, Carl Davis, Popcorn Wylie et al and we felt it was a story that needed telling, in full glorious color. So that's what we did. Or rather that's what Jason did. Long sessions with Mike resulted in a great feature that takes look a behind the labels and music of the man and allows Mike to tell it as he experienced it. The Snakepit, The Funk Brothers, Pied Pier, Giant Records, his work with Garland Green and Rhetta Hughes, it's all there in his own words. Fantastic stuff.
Preparing the feature on UK Issued 45s with Neil Rushton brought back some great memories of finding 45s in the dusty second hand (thrift) shops during the 70s/80s. With records from Neil, Dave Ferguson and myself I think we managed to show a great selection of hard to find UK labelled soul.
The first part of our delve into the Motown catalogue is also included in this Issue. We took a look at the collecting of the Motown labels promo copies and will continue the series with Berry Gordy's other labels in the future.
Couple of Venue Reviews round off this Issue. Prestatyn and the Pittsburgh Weekenders, including a day record hunting, are both events that Hitsville Soul Club attended and we give you our thoughts on them both.
Magazine should be up on the website for folks to buy shortly at : www.theresthatbeat.com and we also have a very limited supply of back Issues if anyone needs any.
Quick word about The 3rd Hitsville Rare Soul Weekender: Lots of interest from both US and UK soulies. Have purchased new Technics 1210s, speakers etc so the sound should be MASSIVE this year! Really looking forward to seeing everyone for some records, beer, dancin, beer and more records! No change from last years format. Friday - Soul night until the wee hours, Sat - Radio shows in afternoon followed by The Allnighter. The party at the "DJ Villa" will also take place on the Sunday as usual. Everyone's invited!
Finally...found a record on the Pittsburgh Trip that I hadn't heard before:
Keanya Collins - I'll Get Over It b /w Ain't No Secret - Blue Rock

I'd obviously heard the "Secret" side but the flip was new to me. A fantastic dancer that if it was played must have been spun while I was at the bar as I'm sure it would have gra bbed my attention. So...if you see one knocking about - grab it!
'Til next time.....Good Hunting.

Ever-Soul Label - a new label and its first release from Daptone

A new label along with the first release annouced, from the Daptone people, info from the Daptone website below...

Daptone Records is proud to announce the launch of our new re-issue imprint, EVER-SOUL Records. As avid fans of Rhythm and Blues, Funk, Gospel, Latin, African, and all forms of Soulful Music, we are anxious to use this new arm of our company to extend some of our favorite rare and unreleased records to our customers. Our debut release, Hank Mullen’s ‘He Upset Your Dreams’ b/w ‘Listen’, is a record for which we have special affection . . .
The A side is an up-tempo groover concerning the saddest subject of all; not one, but two broken hearts. This is an effort from the Avengers on the Audel imprint out of Buffalo NY. The band formed in the mid-sixties and toured a dynamic show with three very different vocalists: Hank Mullen, Moe Jones and Carlena Weaver; they released two singles in the fall of 1970 on the homegrown/financed label. Through then manager, all around music hustler and Macon, Georgia native James Reese, the Avengers traveled to Capricorn Records Studio (Macon, GA) for a session in October of ’70. ‘He Upset Your Dreams’ & ‘Listen” were penned by two staff writers: Earl Simms & Alan Osborne for then Walden Artists and Productions, under the publishing Redwal Music. (Redwal was formed in 1965 by Otis Redding, Phil & Alan Walden. Earl Simms was first Otis Redding’s, later Arthur Conley’s road manager and wrote Conley’s 1968 hit, ‘Funky Street’.)
In the ‘70s the group toured the Midwest and the South as backing band for Eddie Floyd, Arthur Conley, Betty Wright and Betty Swan. Carlena additionally has a 45 on William Nunn’s MODO imprint and spent time working and singing for the Ikettes. Sadly, soon after the records release, Hank Mullen, then in his mid-twenties, died tragically due to a heart attack.

Sad News Eddie Singleton RIP

Ady C posted the below...

Andy Rix just passed on this sad news from Harry Bass.

Eddie had been living in South Africa for several years. He was most famous on our scene for his magnificent Shrine record label that created some of the most exciting, and beautiful soul music of the 1960s. Shrine has become a byword for top quality rare soul and is now spoken of in awe and affection.

I had the honour of releasing the first Shrine recordings in the UK in the mid 80s with two LPs and two singles on the Horace's label. Andy Rix researched and recorded for posterity the story of the Washington DC label that featured Ray Pollard, Eddie Daye, The Cautions, The Cairos, Shirley Edwards, The Prophets and JD Bryant among its releases. This detailed history was documented in the booklets to the two volumes of Kent CDs "Shrine: The Rarest Soul Label". The quality and rarity of the Shrine records combined to make the label a Northern Soul collector's Holy Grail.

Eddie had been a successful writer, producer and artist in the late 50s and early 60s working with Barbara Lewis, The Matadors and Marie Knight. He later wrote for Motown contributing 'Don't Bring Back Memories' for the Four Tops and composed the great Northern Soul classic 'The La Rue' for Lada Edmund Jr.

He married Berry Gordy's ex-wife Raynoma in the early 60s and she was a cornerstone of his Shrine operation being a very musically talented lady. Harry Bass was Eddie's right-hand man throughout most of his musical endeavours and contributed songs and business skills to the label.

In later years he was re-married Motown singer Barbara Randolph who pre-deceased him by about ten years. He was a warm talented man who was very happy that his commercially unsuccessful work at Shrine was eventually appreciated overseas.

You can read a length draft version of the Shrine Cd release notes from Andy Rix (poste d in 2001) in the soul words section on this site

EDDIE SINGLETON - THE EARLY YEARS
William Edward Singletary always knew he was going to be somebody in the music industry. His mother Mary, a gospel singer, actively encouraged Eddies musical abilities from an early age. He took his first tentative steps into the world of show business, from his home in Asbury Park, New Jersey, whilst still in his teens by organising concerts at the local army base. During this time he met many talented artists and subsequently felt that there was no reason why he could not join their ranks. A move to New York, in 1956, brought him into contact with Hy Weiss, the owner of Old Town records, and before too long a recording contract was signed. Eddie cut a few solo sides, that remain unreleased, and then moved on to Brunswick Records with a group he had assembled called The Chromatics. Their only release Too Late/My Heart Let Me Be Free (Brunswick 55080), issued in 58, enjoyed moderate sales and remains a collectors item for followers of that genre. The group did a number of shows and dates out of town but Eddie, who was by now composing his own material, decided that he didnt really enjoy being in the limelight as a performer feeling that his talents would be put to better use elsewhere. By 1959 Eddie had his own office at 1650 Broadway. Despite having been in New York for less than three years he had built up an impressive roster of associates and was well connected with all of the major players in the city; Eddie had finally found a home....

Sad news indeed

Update on this Saturdays 100 Club - 19 Jan 2008

Following on from my previous announcement that the Northern Soul night would have to finish at 3 am due to the club not having got its 6 am licence extension in on time. We have now got a nearby (easily walkable) club, to let our die-hards who need to keep on going, do exactly that. We'll be allowed to take over the decks too, so it could be quite a night. The club is small though so priority will be given to the long distance punters who can't get home until morning, but I think most of us will squeeze in.

In addition we have added Soul Source stalwart and top Hertfordshire soul boy Ian "Simsy" Sims to the bill which already had the glittering talent of Mick "El Gringo" Smith, Alan "Birthday Boy" Handscombe and Ady "Pass The Sprouts" Croasdell so it's gonna be Magic!

Admission is only £8, and will be reduced further to £5 after 12.30 am, memberships aren't needed, bring a friend or a very confused stranger.

Until then, I remain yours  dementedly

City Soul - Sheffield and Bangor Event News

As things have started falling in to place at long last on here , you should be seeing the news and articles section on here getting a kick up the arse and getting back to how it should be
Some tale of two cities style event news
Next month see's the return of the once regular Bangor Soul Nghts. Now with a new team taking it on they are returning on the first Friday of February and will be held on a bi-monthly format. Its same place as the last series ie the Con Club, but word is that the room has been greatly extended, it now takes in that back bar as well. Fresh team, better venue..  got to be worth a visit if in area
Word from the forum is that the classy venue Qube in town centre is in the  thick of things soul wise in Sheffield, with it now the new home of the regular Vault Of Soul nights and also Mick H being involved with putting on a alldayer on Sunday March 23rd Bank Holiday. Went to one of the charity alldayers last year and was well impressed with the two room venue.

New Forum Open in the Soul Source - The Sharp End

A fair few bits of site news coming up over next day or so
First off is word of a new forum setup and at long last now fully intergrated with the site and fully open.

The new forum is called "Sharp End of Vinyl" and can be found in its new home via the look at your box forum.
Its just been set up and is being looked after by long time member Roger Blythe -who you may know better via his member name 45cellar
(members profile link https://www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showuser=2311)

Many members will be aware of his many informative posts over the years on all sorts of vinyl related subjects, often with label scans and such.
Thanks go out to Chalky, who made a suggestion after Roger has started a new series of posts, that it could be a worthwhile resource if all such posts were posted in a seperate section.
Big thanks to Roger who when talked to him about the possibilties of this, quickly stepped up to the line and agreed to take it on and look after such a place.

The forums already been running for a few days, and as its now offically open, showing on front page. in the new search index, it should in the near future be a valuable and worthwhile resource for all soul fans

Anyway enough of my words here's Rogers intro from the forum.

Words from Roger:

Welcome, everyone.

The aim of this sub forum is to concentrate on information relating to the collecting of original records.
All relevant details relating to original records are worthy of a mention on here. So, please feel free to input and discuss.
There is a wealth of knowledge on this forum and together we can compile a reference for all.

I shall continue to scan, photograph and provide information with as much detail as I am able.

The Bootleg Guide is of course an essential purchase, beyond the information here.

Can view the new forum via link below

100 Club 19th January 2008 all-nighter - 3am closing time

News of a change to djs and hours for the 100 Club January event
Dear 6TS goer,
Unfortunately the manager of the 100 Club applied for our all-nighter extension a day too late and despite our excellent reputation and record over the years, the police licensing authorities refused to allow us any leeway. We therefore have to finish the night at the club's latest licensed closing time of 3 am. We will be starting proceedings at 9pm.

This will not affect future 100 Club all nighter dates that will all go ahead as planned; the management have assured me that they will be applying well in time and I'll be checking each time now.

However I know this will cause problems for quite a few of you who have pre-booked trains, planes, baby-sitters etc. and for this the club management and I apologise profusely. We were going to pull the gig completely but realised we can still have a great late soul night, though it won't be the usual all nighter feel; more of a cross between that and the Xmas party. It will also mean that people who are coming to London anyway can have a good night out.

Because of all this we are reducing the price of admission from £12 to £8 and have adapted the DJ line up as Butch, Mick H and Russ are better suited to all nighters and we have moved their appearances to the next nighter on March 8th which will be at the new permanent nighter time of 10pm-6am. Mick and I will still be serenading you with our soul numbers, (I've just acquired a great new unissued Brooks O'Dell Columbia track, perfect for the 100 Club) as usual, and we've added 40th birthday boy, long time 100 Club stalwart, Dome maestro and top London 60s club DJ Alan Handscombe to the roster. We'll be adding another top DJ too; I'll E-mail further details and check out www.6ts.info for updates.

Many apologies once more, but in true 6TS style "the soul must go on".
I really appreciate your continued support over so many great years and hopefully will see y'all down those hallowed steps on the 19th.

Ady

Bridlington 2008 - Something new to do 2 - Yorkshire Weekender

Bridlington 2008   "Something new to do" 2 Yorkshire Weekender
The East Coast Soul Collective Soul Club are proud to present the sequel to the most talked about event of 2007.
The second Bridlington Northern Soul Weekender will happen on Friday 27th to Sunday 29th of "sunny" June 2008. In the tradition seaside resort of Bridlington in Yorkshire's East Riding.
We will be moving to our new home in the fabulous newly re-furbished Bridlington Spa Pavilion on South Marine Drive.
The building has undergone a £18.5 million regeneration over the past 3 years to make it Yorkshire's most talked about & premier event venue.
Keeping to the original design of the 1920's Building and adding a few 21st Century touches this is now a "state of the art" facility and still retains all the original charm of a true dancehall. div divspanThe main ballroom reputedly has the largest dance floor in EUROPE and it has been totally renewed to its original specifications thus providing a perfect platform for Northern soul dancing at its very best. We are dedicating this main room as "Totally Northern Soul"
Keeping with the "Yorkshire" theme our DJ line up in the main room represents some of the best of England's largest County's talent. With ex-Wigan Casino DJ Pat Brady and Samantha's star John Vincent both wearing the white rose with pride. Rob Wicks, Yockie, & Mort are flying the flag for the S.Yorkshire contingent plus John Parker & Tony Hatfield represent the County City of York and Dukesy making the trip down the coast from Scarborough.
With an invasion being lead in convoy up the M62 by Annesley's Pete Taylor representing Sherwood Forest, Glynn Sissons, Rob Smith & Rob Wigley will all be heading north for the weekend wearing the outlaws Lincoln green (although not the tights we might add !).
We will also be taking the opportunity to feature several Yorkshire Soul Clubs during the Weekender details of which will be published later in the year.
With the change of venue brings the chance to add a second room to the event, which will be playing the best in Crossover & Modern Soul
And will again featuring a wealth of Yorkshires finest.
Exiled Yorkshire man Sean Hampsey will be teaming up with his Pitches right hand man Andy "Tats" Taylor alongside Modernism's Martin Dixon and Errol Green. Making the journey from Lancashire will be John Kane playing the current floor-fillers and crowd pleasers. Rob Wigley will be double-shifting and further guest to be confirmed as the event draws closer.
We firmly believe that this event is the best value for money soul event in the UK.span
As a part of that commitment to the scene we have held the admission to last years bargain price of £20 for the FULL WEEKEND when purchased in advanced by ticket.
We can also offer a "Mini-Bus" special for parties of 12 people travelling together which is a "Buy 10 get 2 free" offer. Please note this offer can only be purchased from the Organisers ticket outlet and NOT via the Spa Box Office credit card hotline.
We had rave revues on our 2007 first event in Bridlington and ticket sales have already exceeded the 500 mark for 2008 as I write this.

Bobby Relf Obituary in the Times

Thanks to Keith for passing on a link to a Times Online article regarding the recent sad news of Bob Relf passing away

Clip from the article
Behind Relf’s belated success lay a long and varied history as a vocal group singer in Los Angeles, where he was born in 1937. Robert Relf was attending Fremont High School in 1954 when he got together with his fellow pupils Sam Jackson, Ted Brown and Ronald Brown to form the Laurels
They got the chance to record the following year with the ballad Yours Alone for the LA-based Flair label. The group next recorded as backing singers for the R&B star Jesse Belvin before performing a similar task for the blues star Peppermint Harris. The Laurels had the opportunity to record by themselves again for the RCA X label and rounded off a busy year with discs on the Combo and Cash labels.,,

Visiting Detroit By Rob Moss Part 5

People who reside in the largest city, or the capital, of a country seem to have a pompous air of superiority and an apparent belief that they are, in some way, better than their fellow citizens. This is certainly true in Britain, where most Londoners appear to believe that they are life’s leaders — the special, ‘chosen’ ones who were sent to civilize and refine the rest of us. How else could the BBC ‘Soul Britania’ television series manage to attribute the entire development of black music in our country to the people and places in the capital? In America, people from New York and Los Angeles hold this ominous distinction, and in Canada it is undoubtedly the residents of Toronto who strut around in a state of bloated haughtiness and self-importance; thus prompting the following witticism. Question. How many people from (insert name of large city) does it take to screw in a light bulb? Answer. One — they hold the bulb and the world revolves around them. A similar philosophy tends to exist in the music industry, although today, all forms of competition from independent companies has been extinguished as the few corporate ‘giants’ have all major markets safely dominated, and control is firmly centred in Los Angeles. It wasn’t always so however.

At the dawn of modern musical development, in the 1950s, when mass consumption of recorded works began, it was possible for small independent companies to have a shot at the big time. One of the largest niche markets nationally has always been the indigenous black population, and thousands of small independents emerged to exploit the financial potential contained therein. Labels like Atlantic Records in New York, Chess in Chicago, Duke/Peacock in Houston and King in Cincinnati were early pacesetters. ...

note from the soul source team - sorry but all Robs non-current articles are now clipped due to a future book release - watch out for news of that!

The History of the Fabulous Peps

The History of the Fabulous Peps by Joe ( Pep) Harris.
Although we were inevitably mistaken for Gladys Knight's Pips, The Peps were vocally more akin to The Impressions, but pigeonholing them as another opportunistic copycat group would be a mistake, their high-energy live performances defined the 60's all-singing-all-dancing groups that relentlessly toured the USA during that go-go decade.
The three of us turned professional at Thelma Records around 1962, cutting a few 45s and doing background on various sessions. Before that we were all involved in singing around Detroit, Ronnie Abner used to be in The Vibratones, I "Little Joe" Harris sang lead on one of Robert West's Bumble Bee label records - "Trouble In A Candy Store" - and Tommy Hester had won talent show contests during the late 50s and sang with The Turnpikes.

We joined Mike's D-Town setup around 1965 with a hard-earned reputation as one of the Motor City's liveliest acts and weren't labelled Fabulous for nothing. Back-flips, jumps, spins and splits peppered our live shows, we inadvertently got likened to Curtis Mayfield's seminal group. "Tommy and Ronnie had the soft high tenor and I had the Jerry-Butler, Fred-Cash sound, so we sounded like The Impressions, in fact our range was higher than theirs. We do one Impressions' song a show, and the rest is us. But record-wise. everybody wanted us to sound like The Impressions!
During our spell at Thelma we travelled down to Dayton, Ohio where we took root for about a year and started to develop an identity. We fine tuned our slick moves and learned the ropes of performing while singing with Robert Ward's accomplished group, The Ohio Untouchables. Once we were back in Detroit we continued to add finishing touches to our routine.
We cut a wall-to-wall drum and bass Wheelsville 45, "Love Of My Life," that was also released in '65. Ronnie penned and sang lead on "My Love Looks Good On You" - our up-tempo, 1966, D-Town disc - and by then guitarist "Little Charlie" Herndon had become an integral part of the group's act and we were sometimes billed as The Four Peps. We gradually drifted away from Mike and started to revolve around Pete Hall, who I remember sent us down to Memphis to add some southern-soul flavor to our recordings.

Our version of "Gypsy Woman" was released on Premium Stuff and another admiral cover of an Impressions' classic, "I've Been Trying," was If I remember correctly, cut at the same time, this latter song was released on the Wee 3 label in 1967 and that May we paraded it at Detroit's famed Chit Chat Lounge where the resident Funk Brothers backed us.
Although Motown had periodically invited us to join Hitsville's stack of talent, we steadfastly refused to sign to simply end up on the proverbial shelf. But after almost a decade of singing together I eventually left in 1971 to front The Undisputed Truth, hitting the big-time with Norman Whitfield's sublime "Smiling Faces Sometimes."

It's a pleasure to be back on stage again as the Fabulous Peps , I just loved those early days and the music In Detroit , The peps have always had a soft spot in my heart even though I had bigger hits with the Undisputed Truth and winning a grammy award , Its all come back again to me. Thanks to The Fabulous peps and I'm really looking forward to meeting the Uk fans at New Century Soul at Wolverhampton on Saturday 26th January 2008. I would like to thank my dear friend Hitsville Chalky and promoter Chris Waterman for making this all happen again.
Joe ( Pep) Harris.

With an as expected lower crowd in the two non-oldies rooms (Due to Winsford clashing with yet another Allnighter) Johnny Beggs decided to combine them for a better atmosphere.
At first I thought this would be a bad idea, but it did seem to work pretty well considering the diverse tastes of the people attending.
I know the R&B / Early Soul DJ's did hold back on some of the more obscure and gritty stuff, so's not to offend those who were into later sounding Soul, and it appeared Andy Whitmore and Dean Anderson tailored there sets accordingly (the sign of a customer orientated DJ, the way it should be).
I stuck to a more 60s Soul set than usual, but enjoyed it no less.
A good atmos in that room, but the oldies room was dead - a complete change from the previous month.... are the Dinosaurs finally dying out?
All in all an enjoyable night, made so as much by the company, as the sounds.
Playlist to follow.
May 28th Hideaway And The Non-cis, Manchester.
Posted by , 10 June 2005 ·
Was planning on going to the Hideaway for a couple of hours, then onto the CIS, but as everone is probably aware, events at CIS put the kybosh on this plan.
People seemed genuinely angry at Chris the promoter, blaming him for 'ruining their weekend'.... my thoughts on this - get a fcuking life.... it's only a night out.
Chris and the rest of his team obviously put loads of effort into providing quality events, and for people to call him for things beyond his control is well out of order.
A bit of respect for a guy who is willing to stand outside the venue on the night and personally apologise to anyone arriving and point them in the direction of a free venue, is called for.
So with the cancellation of CIS i was forced to stay at the Hideaway and witness Mace running around sweating and Karate chopping all and sundry (due to him seeing a book called 'Kung Fu Mace').
A good night, with some quality early soul and R&B played.

Samanthas May 21st
Posted by , 10 June 2005 ·
With the late notice of cancellation of 'Back Beat' by the new owners of Sheridans, I was at a loose end for a change...
Samanthas was on in Sheffield, so I thought I might as well give it a go.
In some ways I'd wished I'd stayed at home...
The extensive refurb turned out to be a load of sheets hung all over the walls and ceilings, making the place look like the decorators had left half way through the job, leaving their dust sheets in situ.
Due to a lower than expected turn out, the two rooms were combined giving an oldies heavy balance in my opinion... and not very good ones at that.
The record room was reasonably busy, but it was mainly a case of trades as there wasn't much cash changing hands.
To my eyes (and ears) JV has got this place and the 'Sheffield' scene all wrong...
He's trying to promote a more forward thinking venue in what is effectively a stinking oldies backwater.
It just doesn't work... the 'punters' don't want it, and I can see them staying away in droves.
If I were JV I'd promote the main room as Samanthas Oldies, then open the second room as 'current sounds' not vice versa.
Mind you if I were him I'd also drop quite a few of the resident DJs as they don't do him any favours... there's Oldies, Mouldy Oldies and Jurassic Oldies... and unfortunately a lot of the plays fall into the latter category.

The Big Un - Saturday 14th Of May
Posted by , 10 June 2005 · 4 views
Ever done something then regretted it afterwards?
I have on far too many occasions.
This time I accepted DJ bookings at the SSCDT Alldayer in Derby, the NMD annual Alldayer in Thringstone, and Steam allnighter in Crewe.... all on the same day...
Never one to let anyone down when I've accepted a job, I decided to grab the bull by the horns and do all of the jobs regardless of logistics.
First off was the SSCDT all dayer in Derby.
Set off in plenty of time to get there well before my set, but roadworks and crap drivers put paid to this, so I was cutting it a little fine...
Managed to get there about 15 minutes before my set, sink a pint of shandy then get on with the job at hand....
Playlist to follow.
Played a pretty safe Northern set as I was one of the first on and wanted to create a bit of an atmosphere.
Had one very drunken dancer throughout the majority of my set.
Time for a quick natter with everyone, then off to NMD for a few hours.
This time I managed to get there well before my spot so I was able to enjoy listenening to a full set, and chat with quite a few people.
(Mainly putting faces to computer IDs)
No More Doggin' is an excellent club run by Kev Connellan and Steve Johnson, that plays rare 60s Soul and R&B, but unfortunately this place does not seem to get the support it deserves, no worries today though as due to plenty of 'plugging' the place filled up nicely, with quite a few dancers as well.
Went up and did my spot... a full on R&B set.... as that seemed to be doing the business.
Playlist to follow.
Time for a few more chats, a pint or two of lemonade and sell a few tunes before it was back to the SSCDT alldayer.
Now 4 hours isn't really a long time in the scheme of things, but 4 hours of a bunch of loonies mixing with seriously high levels of alcohol, led to the place resembling a bomb-site inhabited by a troop of marauding chimpanzees.
A great time was had by all, including Janine who had managed to pull off a double bluff and actually turn up.
As the witching hour approached it was time for the final leg of the marathon soul session... so off to Crewe we went...
Arrived at Steam to find it a little down on numbers, but a busy Oldies room.
The R&B room was at about its usual level throughout the night, even during Mace's spot.
Playlist to follow.
Left Crewe at 5am feeling a little tired, and managed to get all the way back to Sheffield before seven thirty, despite being Kamikazee'd by a big fat Wood Pigeon.
Soulsville May 6th

Great night out.... don't remember too much of it as Bladeforlife was designated driver (which was nice), so I managed to partake in the great Kronenberg Bier Blond that they have started serving down there.
Usual high standard of tunes that get played at this venue...
Shame it's quite so intimate!
The late licence cock-up was a shame, but like true Troopers, we all decamped to a bar a few doors away for a couple more beers and lots more banter.
A steady journey home via an Indian take-away was the order of the day.
The feller taking the order did a little dance whn he saw Bladeforlife walk through the door, as he knew he was going to be quids in....
Comparison of meal prices:
Pikeys Dog + Missus = £7.00 (just under)
Bladeforlife + Missus = £22.00
Soultown - May 1st
Posted by , 10 June 2005
Really enjoyed what turned out to be the last Allnighter at Sheridans.
A packer, with everyone up for a great night out.
Fantastic line up as usual, with the small room giving less experienced DJs a chance (including a certain Gypos Mutt).
It was a pleasure to play to such an appreciative crowd without massive dancefloor pressure.
Unfortunately no playlist as I forgot to jot them down.
Had a couple of people deck clocking the Betty Lavette version of 'Stormy'
(Shame it's so hard to find, could have sold mine five times over.)
Sheridans will be missed, as I don't think there is another club with that small, intimate feeling that is still big enough to accomodate a decent sized crowd.
Stafford Reunion.
Posted by , 10 June 2005
Well, Stafford Reunion was a bit of a let down to be honest.
Parking was atrocious due to a fun fair being plomked on what seemed the only decent sized carpark in the area.
Lugged the heavy record boxes the 200 yds up to the front door to be held up by over zealous doorstaff..... checking for drugs? No. Checking for weapons? No. Checking for bottles of lemonade? Yes. Well you could spray it in someones eye, and depending upon the 'lemon to liquid' ratio, it could sting them quite badly.
As a part time record dealer, I was pretty much pee'd off when I found out that the table I'd reserved was somewhere in 'Alsager' (felt like it after walking past the main room and up the stairs).
The room was the most depressing I've ever had the misfortune to be put in.... a bit of a sweaty coffin, full of record dealers with nobody looking at records.
Spent a couple of hours in there hoping things would get better, but alas they didn't so i packed up and took the records downstairs.
Slipped my box onto a small patch of free table in the foyer and made a few sales within 30 minutes.... this compounded the feeling of having wasted my time going upstairs.
Managed to catch Guy Hennigans spot in the main hall, which was excellent, but by the time this had passed the whole event had already been soured for me.
I've already made these comments to the promoters and to be fair they have responded accordingly...
Don't think i'll make the journey there again though.

What's Wrong With Promoters.....
Posted by , 17 April 2005 ·
Why do promoters of sporadic events pick nights that clash with established confirmed events?
Latest in a long line of these clashes involved the very irregular 'Winsford' clashing with the bi-monthly 'Lifeline'.
I'm not suggesting that promoters aren't allowed to go up against other venues, but it smacks of sheer stupidity to put a night on up against one of the most popular current all nighters...
At the end of the day it's not just the rival promoter who loses out, it's everyone.
As a promoter and 'punter' it annoys me that I can't visit these other venues as I can't be in two places at once... so yet again I miss out on a decent night out.
The ethic of 'more choice' isn't always a great thing, it divides the scene and makes for poorer attended nights all round.
This has been a regular thing amongst the local Soul Nights, but it has now started creeping into the Allnighter scene.
No matter how hard you argue that the scene is 'huge' and places like Prestatyn and Stoke Kings Hall are always rammed, the truth is that there is an hardcore week in, week out allnighter crowd of around 300 - 400 people, and everytime that events clash, this crowd is diluted....
Places like Prestatyn are always going to be busy, but the majority of the people there may only visit one or two Allnighters during the year (some won't even manage that), so it's no good using them as a barometer when starting to promote an Allnighter.
I suggest that the promoters of these nights that clash, get themselves out and about, and work out exactly which nights they shouldn't clash with before booking their dates.
If there isn't the option of alternative dates, then why not forget about promoting a clash, and schedule something in for later in the year?
Or would that be too easy, and remove the opportunity for self-ego boosting
Just a thought like......

Lifeline April 16th
Posted by , 17 April 2005
Made our way up the M1 to the best upfront Allnighter in the country at the moment...
Arrived at about 9.45 and there was already a decent turn out, with dealers set up and Vinyl hounds sniffing through the boxes.
Said our hellos, then set up the sales and struck camp for the night.
Another busy night ensued, with the record bar getting crammed full, but not much in the way of sales... Roger Banks reported low vinyl sales, suggesting a general slow down in the market, fortunately for Roger he'd just taken delivery of the excellent new batch of Kent CDs, which he had sold out of most titles of in two nights...
Not the busiest 'Lifeline' (probably due to the rumours about Sheridans flying around, and the clash with Winsford...see later comments)
Musically, for me this was probably one of the better 'Lifelines', from what you could hear in the bar. (There were some volume problems, and sound cutting out in there on occasion).
It was great to see Jamie and Rich from 'Soulsville' down there.... I was beginning to think that they went out less often than the Olympic Torch.
There aren't many Allnighters that I would travel the length of the country to attend, but this is one of them, so it's quite fortunate that I only live 40 minutes down the road.
A highly recommended night out, just what an Allnighter should be like.

Second time out for this venue, and a much improved one.
Arrived around the midnight point after some deft driving from vault-of-souler..... a bit of a white knuckle ride around those country lanes near Alsager.
Met the hirsute Mr Beggs at the door, who was looking rather chuffed with the turn-out.
Place was filling up nicely with a fair split between the rooms, with the Oldies room being chokka.
Continued up the 96 flights of stairs to the R&B room, having to stop at each landing to strike camp, have a cup of tea and a bit of bun, before venturing onwards and upwards.
Now because I'm quite a lazy sort, and I love R&B, I didn't venture downstairs very much, but when I did I enjoyed the sounds I heard in the "Conny Sewers" room, but the Oldies room wasn't really my bag (7 days is too long stands out as the standard of oldie I heard), however the dancefloor was full so fair play to the DJs....
Anyway a swift run down of the upstairs room.
Walked in to hear the back end of Horse's set... quality, uptempo R&B as usual...
Said my hellos, handed out a few Back Beat flyers, delivered a few records to their new owners and listened to Mace's spot.
1.30 came around and it was my turn behind the decks.
Tried to keep the tempo up, with a mixture of popular R&B and a smattering of lesser known tracks (Playlist to follow).
The dancefloor was pretty busy throughout, so not too bad a set.
Handed over to Kev Drage, who favours a slightly more midtempo style of track, but a great spot never the less.
Pete Coulson put in a sterling effort for his hour between 3.30 and 4.30.... mixing it up with some storming tracks.....
Last up was a double deck set from Roger and Horse, all great tunes ranging from Gritty uptempo R&B to slick midtempo Big City Soul.
Quality music in a good venue...
My only gripe is the lack of heating in the upstairs room, quite a few people came in the room spent ten to fifteen minutes in there, then went back downstairs for a warm up.
Had one last walk around the venue just prior to closing and counted well over 150 peeps still in....
Not bad for only the second night, and sure to increase in the future.

Ponds Forge 8th April 2005
Posted by , 09 April 2005
Another good Ponds this month...
Quite a few bemused Soul Sourcers in attendance - but were Bill, Ben and Weed there?
Musically, this place is getting better (although I have heard the complaint that there are less oldies being played, but that suits me just fine).
A good mixture of Oldies, Newies and inbetweenies..... plenty of 70s tracks if that's your bag, and a full dancefloor for the majority of the evening...
Even a smattering of R&B tracks didn't put the dancers off... cue my favorite phrase of the moment.... "When is an R&B record not an R&B record?.... when it's a Northern/Stafford record!" (Delete as applicable).
Always enjoy this venue as a seller - nice well lit room, that isn't too far away from the music, yet the volume is low enough so that you can chat/deal/joke around without having to shout....
Can't wait until next month, when Soul Sourcers Jamien and Rich from Soulsville, and John May are guests.
Promises to be a bit of a packer, with the majority of the SSCDT showing as part of their SSCDT weekend......
No doubt the Four Horse(wo)men of the Soulpocalypse will be appearing.
Ta Ta for now,
oh, by the way.....

Some Djs Are Full Of It !
Posted by shute, 16 December 2007 ·
Well just got back from Keele niter, not as buzy as last time I went, but hey ! its that time of the year...
Been getting a few numbers etc for djs to do spots at soul night.... one dj, who shall not be named and known for along time doesnt do soul nights as they are crap and said where do you go ! even though we travel in different circles different venues and rarely at the same venue (niter wise) ... so was the reply '' your not on the scene then'' ????????? so does that mean you have to do niters only to be on the soul scene ??? - news to me
the dj in question, as I know does weekenders, nighters and international spots.... but hey wahat do I know only been into this scene since 1973, through the Wigan, Stafford etc eras... felt a bit offended at this, but everyone to their own and if you dont ask you dont get.
Now to me, are some of these top djs so far up their own arse or am I missing something ??????
is the chip on the shoulder as large as a train sleeper or I just may have taken things the wrong way.
Has anyone else ever come across this ?

3Bs Soul Club @ Stafford Rangers FC
Situated just to the north of Stafford town centre within 5mins of Junction14 off the M6, the Rangers is a well appointed single storey building contaning 2 function rooms and has a large car park. Usually on the first Saturday of every month the largest of the two rooms is hosted to the 3Bs Soul Club.
Promoted by Kev (Shute) Johns and John Fisher, the event which was started in August 2004 has now become an integral part of the Staffs/West Midlands soul calander. The room has a wall to wall wooden dance floor with a bar at one end and a raised stage at the other.
Although it has never been a lock out (capacity of around 300) you are advised to be early as the night does get very busy. The 3Bs Soul Club is even right across the board with the emphisis on quality.
Guest DJ's that have appeared to date include :- Soul Sam, Ginger Taylor, Sean Chapman, Rob Kay, Ted Massey, Nige Brown, Dave Thorly, Carl & Maria Willington, who are regular and welcomed visitors to the club.
Dont forget that we run on the 1st Saturday of every month at STAFFORD RANGERS FC

What I've Done Over The Past 2 Weeks
Posted by shute 10 April 2005 ·
Oh well, thought I'd better start my blog off......
OK !, Lets start off with last weekend Friday 1/4/05..... as most people know that I run a soul night in Stafford every 1st Friday of the month, this use to be every 2nd Friday of the month until this year when it had to be changed due to other comittments by the venue owners.
Anyway, last Friday I was booked to do the Big Lock in Middlewich, a booking I took last year prior to my date changes, and let me just say ''what a great little venue this is'', you can play sounds that you have never played out before and the crowd there will listen and even dance & the best thing, you do get comendated on the stuff you play, all good, keep up the great work Ste & Ann.
Right after doing my spot and slaying around for about half hr, I was back on the motorway heading towards Stafford to the Rangers Club and just arrived back and Mr Rimmer had about 15mins left on his spot, and what I heard and the feedback recieved, I can only praise Dave and say thank you.
What can I say about Stafford Rangers Soul Night, without being bias, always a good night, sounds, atmospher, function room, just brilliant, you should get yourself down here and see for yourself......
This weekend been nowhere as trying to get my new office ready for moving in...
Until next time soul peps......Have Your Fun
