Mo Do Records Online Article Feature

Many thanks to member pottsy for flagging this up in the Box forum here on soul source.
It's from the Billy Nunn website and just one page of what is a fairly extensive decent soul site. As the title of this piece says the page flagged up concerns itself with the Mo Do label. While last years Daptone releases of Bob and Gene Lp and 45 brought the spotlight onto this label, its still worth a shout as its just one of those great informative info page's that simply just deserves a bit of a shout about.
A couple of clips and link below, as said the rest of the site is well worth a look around, pics, videos and more
The soul links section on here is currently a temp "work in progress" affair but when it does return fully (soon honest!) this will be up there
"...as The Parakeets in the late 50s & early 60s, William Sr. valued song writing immensely. With no real local business model, he was forced to improvise resulting in the birth of Mo Do Records..."
"...their own dance routines. Unlike the rest of the releases on Mo Do recorded at 50 Orange Street, Bob & Gene's debut single, "Your Name/You Gave Me Love" was recorded at a house in Williamsville, a wealthy suburb North of Buffalo. Their friend, Karen Renshaw aka "The Runt", sang back up on this release and the bulk of their output. Bobby's girlfriend's favorite Billboard chartbuster at the time was Linda Jones..."

Mabel John - Feature in Uk Press

As you may have read in the previous news article on soul source, Mable John is currently starring as the blues singer Bertha Mae in the feature film The Honeydripper.

As part of the Uk mainstream media exposure, an article/interview by Richard Williams entitled "Drenched In The Blues" is currently featured in the guardians blues/jazz online section of its website. A few clips from the article are below along with a link to the full article.

It was Mable John who, with Smokey Robinson, told Berry Gordy Jr back in 1959 that it was time to stop schlepping his tapes around major record companies and start a label of his own. This was during a trip to New York, and when they were all back home, John used her boyfriend's car to drive the future president of Motown records to meetings with disc jockeys and record store proprietors in the Detroit area ....

...next day, at the Stax studio in a converted cinema on East McLemore Avenue, they recorded it. Hayes ran through the loose arrangement with the musicians while Porter joined John in the vocal booth, prodding her in the back when he wanted a higher note and telling her: "You said it was inside you and you wanted it to come out, so let it out...

Forty years after that heyday, Mable John is enjoying a new kind of fame. When the director John Sayles came to cast the part of Bertha Mae, a veteran blues singer who embodies the spirit of the past in his new film, Honeydripper, he chose a woman who has never commanded the acclaim granted to her friends Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and Mavis Staples, but whose own life represents a precis of the history of African-American music in the 20th century."

The cd My Name is Mable -The Complete Collection which was released last year is also available at £5.49 on Amazon uk (link below) http://www.amazon.co.uk/My-Name-Mable-Complete-Collection/dp/B0000TZ7TA

Honeydripper Film now showing in UK

Now showing in the UK and picking up good reviews

Press Release :

It's 1950 and it's a make or break weekend for Tyrone Purvis (Danny Glover), the proprietor of the Honeydripper Lounge. Deep in debt, Tyrone is desperate to bring back the crowds that used to come to his place. He decides to lay off his long-time blues singer Bertha Mae, and announces that he's hired a famous guitar player, Guitar Sam, for a one night only gig in order to save the club. Into town drifts Sonny Blake, a young man with nothing to his name but big dreams and the guitar case in his hand. Rejected by Tyrone when he applies to play at the Honeydripper, he is intercepted by the corrupt local Sheriff, arrested for vagrancy and rented out as an unpaid cotton picker to the highest bidder. But when Tyrone's ace-in-the-hole fails to materialize at the train station, his desperation leads him back to Sonny and the strange, wire-dangling object in his guitar case. The Honeydripper lounge is all set to play its part in rock n' roll history.

Iconoclastic filmmaker John Sayles, in his 16th feature film, continues his extraordinary examination of the complexities and shifting identities of American sub-cultures in the new film "Honeydripper." With his usual understated intelligence, Sayles uses the rhythms of the citizens of Harmony, Alabama to immerse the audience into the world of the Jim Crow south. It's a fable about the birth of rock n' roll-a quintessentially American subject, but with a fidelity to time and temperament that is unusual in an American director.

"Honeydripper" features an all-star cast including Danny Glover, Charles S. Dutton, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Stacy Keach, Mary Steenburgen,Yaya DaCosta and Sean Patrick Thomas; as well as such notable musicians as Keb' Mo' and Dr. Mable John. It also introduces a major new talent, Gary Clark Jr. who makes his electrifying film debut as Sonny.

Once Upon a Time Live Version - Reply

Back in February, one of the featured news items on Soul Source concerned itself with a very critical view of Bolton Octagon plans to stage a reworked version of the "Once Upon A Time" this summer
In the news article posted Soul Source member Paul Sadot (who devised the actual play in its original format) gave his strong views on the reworking, which included points such as...
"The production worked in its presentation, the actors, the film, the setting, but, most of all, the use of a real and narrative sound track"
the full post can be read via the via the links at the bottom.
Thanks to Del ( member nubian75soulsis) it seems that a reply to this and other criticism was posted on the Octagon Blog by Sally Boyd around the time the original article was published. Though the reply was made two months ago, its content and style may be of interest to those who were unaware of it till now.

Still standing after 60 years the 100 Club has earned a long overdue show of appreciation, not only for being a place of historical importance for music, but also for remaining a personal treasure to many. The inspiration for the exhibition came from The Rolling Stones on stage at the club in 1982, images of which were donated to the club by Carole Lateman, only to be stored away and forgotten for over 20 years. Recently discovered, they sparked the desire to put them where they belong on the walls of the club for the public's enjoyment. With a capacity of 300, the 100 Club shows are always intimate and accessible. This show serves to update the famous walls, rather than transform them, keeping the existing style of the interior. http://www.the100club.co.uk

Milton Wright and Ambassadors Background Snips

Some background snippets on some classic recordings from The Honorable Milton Wright and a member of the Ambassadors
As to be expected over time there has been a fair few threads in the forum regarding Milton Wright and his recordings. As Box regs may be aware, nowadays he's still out there involved in music but due to his daytime job nowadays he is better known now as the Honorable Milton Wright, Judge of the Boston Municipal Court in Roxbury Massachusetts.
After reading recent discussion the Honorable Milton got in touch with this site and during the email exchange I asked if he could pass on any background information on his recordings. He was good enough to take the time to pass on the below...

'I recorded the vocal version with the Terra Shirma Strings. The instrumental version was released and the vocal versions were not released until later. I never received royalties for either tune. I wrote both tunes and sang on both.
I left Michigan and recording and finished my law degree at Boston University. At any rate "The Rollin River Song" which was misnomered "Like A Rolling Stone" and released as an instrumental was always recorded with a vocal track. The players loved it. I loved it. Ollie didn't. Or so I was led to believe. Anyway, those tunes belong to me. I'm not out to hurt anyone now. But I would like to begin now to be appropriately compensated. I am happy that so many people enjoyed my music. It is a gift from God that I cherish. Luckily I am still full of music and have pursued several new avenues including writing a musical ( script and music) and acting.
Thank you for your interest.'

As says he's still involved in various music related productions and can view a recent video of how he manages to involve singing with his daily courtroom routine via the Faith and Values Website

Another artist who also recently got in touch with the site after reading a recent thread ( this time directly by joining and posting in the forum ) was the sax player from the Ambassadors of Too Much Of A Good Thing fame.
He posted the below in the thread and as stated does deserves more exposure so its reposted below
"Came upon this little discussion and thought I’d clear a couple of things up. I’m the sax man from the Ambassadors. That’s the Ambassadors from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, about 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The group started as the Seven Dwarves. In 1964, they added two horns–a trumpet and a sax, very unusual for the time–and became the Ambassadors. Our first gig was at the Silver Springs Fire Hall, near Lancaster. In 1965, we cut our first record, Too Young for Me (flip side: Pork Chops, an instrumental) on the Fleet label. We cut a second disk, I Want a Love (flip side: Those Things Called Girls), which was never marketed. Only one copy of that record exists: a metal and acetate dub. Our third record was Too Much of a Good Thing, on the Pee Vee label (flip side: Whole Lotta Soul). The group had several drummers and bass players over the years, and we lost one singer, who was no longer with the group at the time of Too Much. The Ambassadors continued playing through December 1966, then disbanded.
In 1984, most of the original members reunited, with a couple of new guys, to play a reunion concert. It went so well that we kept going, playing with various personnel until 1992. We continued with the same music: the sweet soul sound of the sixties. Since 1992, we have reunited several times for one-time concerts, the most recent being in October, 2004.
We played behind a number of acts in the ‘60’s, including Lee Andrew and the Hearts. But we never played behind the Trannells–also from Lancaster, by the way. They were their own band. Our only connection to them was that our bassist on Too Much once played with them.
Our records are occasionally available on e-bay. A brand new copy of Too Much of a Good Thing–never played, still in original sleeve–recently brought $370.
By the way, the Ambassadors from Philadelphia, referred to on this site as the Uptown/Atlantic/Arctic group, was a different group.
'Nuff said. It's great to see interest in our band after more than 40 years!...."
There is a cd being released to coincide with a re-union at Yorkstown featuring original tracks (it seems) from Ambassadors and other local bands such as Del Chords, The Del Chords, The Tranells, El Dantes ,The Exciting Invictas ,The Crystalaires The Ambassadors Seven Dwarfs The Emperors The Chateaus The Magic Monorays The Thundering Sentries
can view brief details and a few photos via link below
link out of date

Have to say always find such posts and emails as above great enjoyable reading and thanks go to both artists for passing on

Our special LIVE Act from the USA

Miss BARBARA GASKINS - Barbara and Brenda/Ecstasy, Passion and Pain

The 70's produced some excellent groups and up there with the best of them was the relatively short-lived Roulette Records act Ecstasy, Passion & Pain. Althought they only released one album and a handful of singles for the label, their impact was to be felt well into future decades. Formed in 1973, in New York, it's seemingly fluid membership of between 5 and 8 persons was entirely dominated by Barbara (Gaskins) Roy. We'll come back to Ms. B. later, let's explore her colleagues first, all of whom were instrumentalists (as was Barbara with her jammin' big guitar) which allowed the group to perform as a self-contained unit. The other members included Althea "Cookie" Smith, rare for an unusual young lady in that she was the group's drummer, while the remainder of the percussion work on their recordings came from Carl Jordan, later replaced by Alan Tizer. Joseph Williams Junior provided musical support on bass and Jimmy Clark was co-guitarist (with Ms. B.) for their entire Roulette recordings. Then there was keyboardist Ronald Foster... Billy Gardner took over keyboard duties later from Foster. It should be noted that any contributions by the group members, other than Roy, to the actual recordings were nullified by the presence of Philly star muscians "M.F.S.B." who were given credit on the original releases. Barbara, as well as commanding her jammin' big guitar, was the group's lead vocalist, nominally supported on backgrounds by other group members but more 'properly' supported by those "Sweethearts Of Sigma Sound"- Barbara Ingram, Evette Benton and Carla Benson.

She was also responsible for writing much of the group's material. Barbara, born in Kinson, North Carolina, began her career as one half of the duo Barbara & Brenda, Brenda (Gaskins) being her niece. Together they recorded three singles for the Heidi label, "Hurting Inside," "Special Kind Of Love" and "One More Chance" before coming under the guidance of Luther Dixon and moving to Musicor's subsidiary, Dynamo.

Another trio of singles were released by Dynamo, "If I'm Hurt You'll Feel The Pain," "Never Love A Robin" and "Don't Wait Up For Me Mama." A further recording, "That's Enough" remained unreleased until it's appearance on a 1997 compilation "Kent's Magic Touch." With their lack of success Brenda decided to quit the business. Made of stronger stock, Barbara hung in there from her New York base and began playing guitar for Inez and Charlie Foxx ("Mockingbird") and on various recording sessions in New York waiting for another break.

In 1973, Ecstasy, Passion & Pain was formed and shortly afterwards, through manager Phil Braxton, the group had a recording contract. Getting a deal with Roulette Records, Ecstasy, Passion & Pain recorded roughly 28 sides that included demos and finished masters. 10 cuts made it to their one and only album, several were single-only releases and 13 had to wait 25 years to be released!

A stream of hits started with their first release "I Wouldn't Give You Up" from late 1973 which hit #-17 on the R&B charts. Next came "Good Things Don't Last Forever" #-14 R&B, #-93 pop. The follow-up "Ask Me," regarded as a classic, hit #-19 R&B and went to #-52 on the pop charts. A side note; the song was such an underground classic that Nigerian-born Canadian disco legend Carol (Uchenna Ikejiani) Jiani cut a version in 1982 that swept the club scene and landed her a worldwide hit. "One Beautiful Day" followed hitting #-14 R&B and #-48 pop. The next release 1975's "There's So Much Love All Around" was first an A-side single and then the b-side to two later releases proving Roulette's faith in the song and the group.

Thanks to legendary mixologist Tom Moulton's handy work on "Touch & Go" it became their signature tune as well as an enduring classic. The highly sought-after 12" single is their only Roulette release to be cut on a 12" single. Two more releases in 1977 "Passion" and "Dance The Night Away" failed to match the success on "Touch & Go". By the end of 1977 just as disco was entering it's golden age E.P. & P. disbanded.

During the years 1977 to 1981 Barbara continued with session work and formed her own successful label, Roy B. Records. As a label owner she had a string of hits with Pizzazz's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," Soccer's "Dancin' Game," Melody Stewart's "Get Down, Get Down / Action Satisfaction" and culminating with a reunion of E.P. & P. for the 1981 club smash "If You Want Me".

Another chart/recording hiatus ensued from 1981 to 1986. Her label had folded and E.P. & P. never really managed to stay together after the brief reunion. By 1986 Barbara had surfaced on RCA Records with the release of "Gotta See You Tonight" followed by another 12" single "Gonna Put Up A Fight" in 1987. However their was no album forthcoming. As of 1989 she was still signed to RCA when she recorded her part for the studio group, Togetherness, assembled to support Paul Simpson on the song "We Are The Ones" from his Simp-House / Cooltempo album, "One". The Togetherness group consisted of Barbara "Ecstasy, Passion & Pain" Roy, Will Downing, Rochelle Fleming, Loleatta Holloway, Toney Lee, Ray Simpson, and Fonda Rae.

An incredible line-up to say the least! Sadly Barbara's career seems to be on-hold after this point. Thanks to sampling she can be heard on the 1990's hits: "Son Of A Gun" by JX and "Just Wanna Touch Me" by Fidelfatti, and by virtue of re-release the entire E.P. & P. catalogue can be heard on the U.K. Westside c.d. "Good Things (The Roulette Recordings 1973-1977)"

LAs Crenshaw District RnB Venues of the 50s and 60s - Dumb Angel Blog

The overall effect during the '60s led to a full-color, Mod L.A. soul scene that produced incredible, unique sounding records A great read and some tip top photos as well Been up for almost a year old but thought its still worthy of a pass on. Its a sort of travelogue both through time and the Crenshaw District area of LA . While not as famous or well known as other similar city areas, there was certainly a lot going on there during those now far off decades as this great piece shows. Photos, flyers and more... Clip from the site As black musicians became more common in Hollywood, the avant-garde and psychedelic music scene in turn gravitated to spaces in this district surrounding Crenshaw Boulevard. The overall effect during the '60s led to a full-color, Mod L.A. soul scene that produced incredible, unique sounding records. This travelogue is not meant to be definitive documentation of all the artists who broke from here during that time, but will give you a good idea of the kind of action that was going on.... Get over to the Dumb Angel Blog for the full wack http://dumbangelmag.blogspot.com/2007/07/south-central-los-angeles-r-venues-of.html Once over there rest of blog is worth a look over as well

Rob Moss delivers his view on the recently broadcast BBC4 TV programme Motor Citys Burning - Detroit from Motown to the Stooges
I love Detroit — ‘Motor City’s Burning’
The title sounded fantastic. ‘Motor City’s Burning’ — ‘A documentary looking at how, during the 1960s, the blue collar Midwestern city of Detroit became home to a musical revolution that captured the sound of a nation in upheaval’ and ‘Detroit from Motown to the Stooges’ to quote the BBC’s own promotional blurb. Surely this would be a detailed examination of the circumstances that created one of the most influential musical styles in popular music — ‘The Motown Sound’? The title implied that some scrutiny of the causes and effects of the 1967 Detroit riots would feature in the programme too. And wouldn’t the BBC, an institutional universally respected and admired, with a substantial budget provided by the British taxpayer, be able to gain access to unique footage, interviews and other journalistic extras that would create a truly ground breaking, and long overdue, assessment of an essential era in a unique age?
Adherents to the genre could almost predict the content. A brief history of Detroit, tracing its initial role as a fur trading settlement in the 18th century to the arrival of Henry Ford at the beginning of the 20th century and the creation of the automobile industry, the important role the city played in the escape of slaves from the South during the 19th century, the strained race relations that dogged life in the city throughout most of the 20th century as huge numbers of black families migrated north, and the affluence of the post war period, culminating in the 1960s, that spawned a generation of superbly talented and creative people in and around Detroit. This would be followed by an assessment of the social and cultural landscape around the city in the 1950s, and how this impacted on Berry Gordy Jnr. A brief description of Gordy’s family background, writing career and musical grounding would provide an insight into how he set up his business operation, and, perhaps more importantly, who was involved in the earliest recording sessions and organizational structures he put in place...
note from the soul source team - sorry but all Robs non-current articles are now clipped due to a future book release - watch out for news of that!
BBC Blurb

Documentary looking at how Detroit became home to a musical revolution that captured the sound of a nation in upheaval.
In the early 60s, Motown transcended Detroit's inner city to take black music to a white audience, whilst in the late 60s suburban kids like the MC5 and the Stooges descended into the black inner city to create revolutionary rock expressing the rage of young white America.
With contributions from Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, George Clinton, Martha Reeves, John Sinclair and the MC5.

New Century Soul Allnighter at Maxims Wigan kicks off on 03 May 2008

New Century Soul Club annouce news of a new Northern Allnighter starting up at Maxims Wigan on May 3rd 2008 Midnight to 8am New Century Soul are pleased to announce that we will be launching a new All-nighter on Saturday May 3rd at Maxims in Wigan, the venue some of you may know as it already has a soulful history, as it hosted artists such as Major Lance and held All-nighters before and after the Casino shut its doors.

After talking to local promoters and not wanting to effect their promotions we will be opening at midnight and run till 8am a bit like the old days. The venue is a wonderful 80's style night club with two rooms, the main room has a very large wooded dance floor, lots of seating, two large bars and has a state of the art sound system.

The second smaller room which holds around 100 people has a wooded dance floor and is fully kitted out with PA. There is a very larger all night car park behind the venue and it is a short distance form Wigan train station.

Room 1 DJ's Mick Lyons, Little Scotty, Karl Heard, Steve Pownell, Dave Rimmer, Woody and The Soul Twins

Room 2 "SHAKE N FINGERPOP with Andy Newens And Friends.

The DJ's for the main room on the first night have been put together to cater for an across the board music policy, room two from midnight to 3am will be more on the rare side with collectors such as Karl Heard and Stuart Cheetham joined by Harpo and Sandi to add a little of the modern cross over flavour. At 3am the room will be handed over to the guys from 'Shake and Fingerpop' for their after party.

'Shake and Fingerpop' is one of the promotions run by Andy Newens a young Wigan lad who has been introducing soul to the retro minded youth in Wigan for a couple of years now and he has built up a very healthy night at The 'Cotton Club' by playing classic pop, funk and soul they finish down there at 3am when they will join us to carry on their party. We hope this is a way of introducing a younger crowd to the niter scene and who knows they just might like it.

Site News - Site Search and Refosoul now off the ropes

Was a bit of chaos over the last couple of weeks on here regarding refosoul and the site search.

Changes in the background meant that had to rewrite from scratch some of the custom parts of site. This did take a lot longer than first thought and as it was a 'live' upgrade some of the features went walk about for a while
Hopefully the back is broken now and though a few minor things still need sorting, the main features are all now back up and fighting.

The search engine is now fully open to members and as before offers fast full site wide searches It searches the full soul source site content (over 700,000+ items) in less than a second

Refosoul is back at almost full strength, the upgrades and such should mean its faster and more solid than previous. The main parts such as player and uploading are solid and now in a postion where approaching full final version at long last ( a few misc bits such as the improved playlist feature outstanding) The upgrades and such also have a effect on all other site features and should mean that site is in a lot better state both performance and feature wise than at any previous time.

Thanks to all members who assisted with testing, feedback and such

Cheers, best foot and all that

2008 6TS Northern and Modern Soul Weekender at Cleethorpes Line Up!

The 2008 6TS Northern and Modern Soul Weekender at Cleethorpes boasts an impressive three act live performance at midnight on the Saturday all-nighter.
KARIME HARRIS
The opening act sees us witness the start of a new musical career for a very talented young singer. Karime is the daughter of top LA songwriter and producer Kent Harris and the legendary LA singer Ty Karim. She has actually now made north-west London her home and lives 2 miles from Ace’s offices. Over the past few years she has been performing as the lead singer of the funk group the Killer Meters, but has now come to terms with her parents’ music which she had previously revered so much that she was loath to perform it. However Kent Records’ recent and future reissuing of her mother’s 60s and 70s recordings has put that music back to the forefront and seeing Duffy, Adele and Amy hitting the charts with US soul style songs has made her determined to claim back her birthright and perform a special tribute to her parents’ work. She has inherited her mother’s husky, deep (for a woman) voice and will perform her biggest Northern and Modern tracks including ‘Lighten Up Baby’, ‘You Just Don’t Know’, ‘You Really Made It Good To Me’, ‘Wear Your Natural’, ‘Lighten Up’ and ‘I Ain’t Lying’ aka ‘Ain’t That Love Enough’. It will be a memorable night for both us and her.
FRANK DELL
Speaking of big voices, we are proud to be bringing New York singer Frank Dell over to Europe for the first time. Frank is a soul collector’s household name on the strength of his one superlative Northern Soul smash ‘He Broke Your Game Wide Open’. Though he has been a singer throughout his life, his career has mainly been on the jazz circuit, which has been our loss and their gain. He recorded with New York stalwart producer Phil Medley, most famous for penning the original ‘Twist And Shout’ and Dave Blake the guy responsible for the Quotations and Jackye Owens recordings, among others. Apart from HBYGWO he cut the uptempo ‘Baby You’ve Got It’ which is soon to feature on Kent’s “Northern Soul’s Classiest Rarities Vol 3”. He recorded more sides with Phil and Dave in the 70s, some of which mysteriously came out on the Guinness LP devoted to Frank. More tracks were laid down that never made it onto vinyl like the excellent two-stepper ‘You’ve Got To Deal With It’ and one that came out as a Valise label 12” only, ‘What More Can I Do’, which is getting a lot of Modern soul action right now. He also had a pair of singles for the Philips and Blue Rock stable of labels under his surname of Murphy; his real name being Franklin Delano Murphy. As Big Frank Murphy he cut 'It's All Over But The Pain' while as Big Frank & The Essence he recorded the magnificent 'I Won't Let Her See Me Cry', one of the monsters of the Stafford inspired "60s newies" Northern Soul scene in the 1980s. It will be an honour to hear these recordings performed live. There's no doubt that Frank’s deep rich voice is going to thrill Cleethorpes and this charming and talented New York singer will show the soul world his vast talent.
GIGI & THE CHARMAINES
Our headline act this year is none other than Cincinnati’s fabulous girl group the Charmaines. Lead by Gigi Griffin this notable outfit has been present at some of the most ground breaking moments in soul music history, supplying backing vocals to many of James Brown’s legendary King sessions and working with the great Herman Griffin/Lewis in Detroit and Chicago in the mid 60s when those cities ruled the airwaves. This will be their first ever European appearance singing their uptempo soul songs. Though the girls had an impressive series of 45 releases throughout their career, it is three unissued (one unheard) tracks that have shot them into the spotlight in recent years. Firstly we discovered a throbbingly tough version of Ike Turner’s ‘I Idolize You’ in the Fraternity tapes that Ace purchased and though the song was given a release number, no vinyl appears to exist of it. That was until acetate plays at London’s 100 Club turned it into the monster R&B/Northern crossover record that eventually lead to it being released as the 6TS 23rd anniversary single. It’s now very hard to find and quite expensive too. A similar path was lead by the girls’ stupendous 1966 Date recording, ‘I Don’t Wanna Lose Him’ a previously unissued track that was cut by Gigi’s future husband Herman Lewis at the same session as the issued stomper ‘Eternally’, a Wigan monster once bootlegged as by The Sweet Things. ‘Lose’ eventually saw life onto vinyl 4 years late as another 100 Club world exclusive. The third mystery track of the triumvirate is Gigi’s original version of the Andrea Henry and Janice Northern Soul classic ‘I Need You Like A Baby’. It’s a song Dale Warren wrote for the Charmaines that got as far as the demo stage but was then used on Andrea Henry. Sadly the demo version has not been heard since it was cut, but Gigi remembers Andrea copied her performance completely. Dale also wrote ‘Guilty’ and ‘Girl Crazy’ for the girls in this period, two great Columbia singles that will also be sung live at Cleethorpes along with their great reading of JJ Barnes’ ‘Poor Unfortunate Me’.
And if that ain’t enough for you, original group member and Gigi’s sister, Gerri Jackson, was the girl responsible for the wonderful duet with Herman Lewis (Griffin) version of Clara Ward’s stomping Wigan classic ‘The Right Direction’. And she’s going to relive that rare soul moment with us too.
So I feel this year’s Cleethorpes live show will be a remarkable and entertaining experience for us all. You might even catch me with a smile on my face.

Detroit and Memphis - Visiting Detroit Part 6 by Rob Moss

The latest in the Visiting Detroit series - Rob Moss expands things with a visit to Memphis making up part 6 of this great series of soul articles
In many ways, Detroit and Memphis have little in common. Historically and geographically, they were at either end of the slave trade — Memphis became the main ‘distribution centre’ for the forced African labour brought in to the southern US States to service the cotton industry, amongst others, whereas Detroit was the final stop in the north for those escaping the horror and degradation of the practice, on their way to freedom in Canada. Tennessee is essentially a rural State. By the 1950s Memphis had become the world’s largest market for spot cotton, hardwood lumber and mules (!). Detroit, and other smaller centres in Michigan, on the other hand, was exclusively industrial, boasting the largest and most powerful automobile industry in the world.
Throughout the twentieth century huge numbers of southern blacks migrated north in search of employment and a better life, eager to escape the rampant racism and segregation that existed in the South. From as far back as the nineteenth century, Memphis fostered the musical and artistic expressions of its large black population in the form of Gospel, Blues, Jazz, Rhythm & Blues and Soul and became world renown for the innovators and the innovation it produced. But, many musicians joined the exodus north too, so it is not surprising that those same stylings surfaced in northern cities, albeit in somewhat convoluted or reconstituted forms. As the two streams developed, they each reflected the cultural, political and social environment in which they were created. If Detroit was politically liberal and progressive, Memphis was conservative and reactionary. Whereas Detroit was urbane and cosmopolitan, Memphis was rudimentary and puritanical. Detroit created ‘The Motown Sound’. Memphis gave us ‘Sweet soul music’. This creative divergence reached its zenith in the 1960s when both cities combined to impose their own, quite different, interpretations of black musical expression on the world...

Blame It on the Dogg: the Swamp Dogg Anthology 1968-1978 Kent Cd Out Now!

Another fine release from Kent this month - for this release the focus is on Jerry Williams...
Blame It on the Dogg: the Swamp Dogg Anthology 1968-1978
CATALOGUE NUMBER CDKEND 293

A few clips from the ace records site article...

Over the years, soul music has thrown up its share of characters and one such, definitely larger than life and indeed than his physical stature, is Jerry Williams Jr, better known as Swamp Dogg. Outrageous, outspoken, opinionated and one of the nicest guys you could meet, Swamp loves his music doubtless more than he loves the music business, an institution to which he has contributed more than his fair share of classics, many of which have gone unrecognised beyond a select - but ever-growing - coterie of fans. As an artist, songwriter and producer, Swamp’s mark on soul music has been indelible and, in “Blame It On The Dogg” we get two dozen tracks that show him in his multiple guises.

By the 1968 date that launches this CD, Jerry Williams Jr was 25 and already a veteran of the business as an artist, label owner, producer and writer. The earliest example here of his work is the Dynamo release of Inez & Charlie Foxx’s Count The Days, cut while the man himself was pacted to the parent Musicor label. A relatively short-lived stay, he moved on to Botanic and Atlantic - with further examples of his work featured here - as he told In The Basement magazine in 1998. [At Musicor] “I co-produced the Toys, Exciters, Tommy Hunt, Inez & Charlie Fox... then I got fired for taking Gene Pitney out of his bag. So I met up with Don Gardner who was setting up Botanic Records and was given the A&R position that night. Three weeks’ later I was Vice President and a stockholder. I signed Gary US Bonds immediately and Little Charles & the Sidewinders. Botanic expanded very rapidly and went out of business the same way. I called Henry Allen at Atlantic and made an artist/producer pact, cutting the Commodores, Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles, C & the Shells and the Drifters. ...

---Some of Swamp’s greatest achievements have been with female vocalists, with whom he has seemed to have a particular affinity - although it has been suggested that his working relationship with Ruth Brown (represented here with Stop Knocking) was something of a love/hate one, with emphasis on the latter. Iin 1998 he commented that he and songwriting partners, Charlie Whitehead and Gary U.S. Bonds, were all raised by strong women, which assisted in getting into a female mindset. “When I write about women I’m writing with my aunts, my mother, my grandmother and everybody. How they felt, how they acted...” The strong distaff tracks by Eleanor Grant are seeing the light of day for the first time and ex-Independent Helen Curry’s take on Shu-Doo-Pa-Poo-Poop was cut for Swamp’s Sweetheart label, just one of two outings from the venture. The title of the CD here uses the word “Blame” but it could as easily have been substituted by “Praise”. More please!

The 4th Newquay Soul Weekender - April 3rd till April 6th

Latest news on the upcoming Newquay Weekender from Neil Rushton
Everything looking good for the 4th Newquay Weekender from April 3 to 6.
When we started the event we hoped the combination of Cornwall and Soul Music would result in something different from the other Weekenders and that has certainly proved the case. It's not the biggest or brashest Weekender but it is small and friendly - - everyone seems to spend the weekend smiling
The music is always diverse (if you are looking for the same old, same old, you won't get it here) and uplifting. A lot of people take advantage of the surroundings to go out exploring Cornwall in the day and come back well up for the evening sessions. So far we have always enjoyed great weather. The DJ's love the event - Mick H is getting as many of his crowd as he can to make the trek down here - and they all play what they want, without any guidelines from the promoters.
Thursday night is an open decks night, anyone who wants to play should PM me.
As usual the music is at The Griffin Hotel with the Northern/Rare side of things downstairs in the (very) atmospheric cellar bar and there is an alternative room upstairs which over the weekend will feature everything from Crossover, Modern Soul, Classic Disco, Jazz-Funk and Soulful House.
Weekend passes are £20 each.
This time around we are also taking over the nearby Cliffdene Hotel for accommodation.
Bed, breakfast and dinner for Friday and Saturday, with weekend pass included, is £99 which we think is great value for money. You can book securely on line or by post.

Melvin Davis - His Story by Rob Moss

Around 2004 I was running a website for Melvin Davis . It was set up to promote his short Uk tour and also a cd that had been released by Hayley Records. Am sure that anyone who met him and his son when they were over would agree with me when I say that he is a great genuine guy. So when Rob Moss asked if wanted to use the sleeve notes for this section it was a no brainer.
The sleeve notes are from the cd entitled Melvin Davis - His Greatest Recordings and though released in 2004 I think it is still availble, either via the usual outlets or indeed thru the Hayley website.
Also featured is a radio interview that is up in the refosoul radio section (see end for link), from the same Uk visit, it features both Melvin and his son being interviewed by Dean Anderson on his Boundary Sound Radio show.and is well worth a listen.
The latest news on Melvin from Rob W, is that he may be visiting these shores again soon, and recently had some good news as a cover version of "Chains of Love " was featured in an award winning film, which should mean that some well deserved royalties will be winging their way to both Melvin and also JJ Barnes.
Anyway back to the main thrust, here's the sleeve notes from the cd from Rob Moss which as you can read the depth and background do justify renaming from "sleeve notes" to the Melvin Davis - His Story...

Melvin Davis - His Story By Rob Moss

Melvin Davis is one of the most gifted individuals to emerge from the Detroit music scene of the early 1960’s. His talents are prestigious, encompassing almost every aspect of the recording and performing process, and directly contributing to the wealth of material that came out of the city in the last five decades. From his first recording for the tiny Jackpot label in 1961, as a teenager, to the latest collection ‘Melvin Davis — His Greatest Recordings’, the quality and consistency of Melvin Davis’ music is of the very highest standard.
Melvin Davis was part of a generation of Detroit musicians and performers who made an indelible impression on the development of music in America, throughout the latter part of the twentieth century, and well into the new millennium. Like many of his contempories, Davis grew up steeped in the jazz, blues and R&B stylings that the city had become famous for in the 1940s and 1950s. By 1960 several local artists had gained national prominence, among them Jackie Wilson and Marv Johnson, and Berry Gordy's fledgling Motown set up was beginning to establish itself as a successful and lucrative operation. Many local entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to emulate Gordy's success, and scores of small record labels emerged, eager to audition and record the huge pool of musical talent that abounded. Melvin Davis’ love for music grew and developed throughout his childhood and early adolescence — by his late teens the natural talent he possessed had been transformed into a tangible musical output. “I always had my own band, even from the early days. There were lots of guys who wanted to perform when we were young. Not all of them could cut it though.” Davis recalled in a 2003 interview.
As the leader of his own musical group, The Jaywalkers, he had not only mastered keyboards and guitar, but had become something of a principal on his preferred instrument, the drums. The line up of The Jaywalkers gives a fascinating insight into the depth of talent that existed in Detroit at that time — Leroy Emmanuel, Cornelius Grant (who would late become The Temptations’ musical director), Clyde Wilson ( Steve Mancha), Tony Newton (latterly a Motown staff bassist and 8th Day member) and vocalist David Ruffin would all treasure the invaluable experience they gained in the group during those early days. “We had so much fun back then. We would squeeze all of us and all of our instruments into my station wagon and we’d go and play somewhere. In town or around the State. We would play all over.” Enduring friendships were developed as The Jaywalkers played at almost every ski lodge, local dance hall and college campus throughout rural and urban Michigan, particularly between Davis, Wilson and Ruffin. “They used to call us the ‘Three Amigos’ ‘cause we were so tight. We did everything together. We used to share the driving but had to ban David in the end. He was a crazy driver. Two separate times he drove into a snow bank!”

Rob Glover Blog from 2008

It All Seems So Long Ago!
Posted by Rob Glover, 07 March 2008
I first started out DJ'ing at Lodge Farm Youth Club in Loughborough way back in 1982. I remember some young chap bringing in a load of soul 45's and me picking up a copy of "10 Miles High" - David and The Giants for 50p.
A couple of years later I braved it to the Leicester Oddfellows All-nighters and first came across 60's newies and modern, blimey.
After that it was Hinckley, Notts Palais and the mighty Stafford so that's something every weekend covered.
I moved to Northamptonshire in 1987 and started the Northern Soul Brat Pack at The Ideal (now Silk) in Wellingborough.
Lenny Dopson and I then moved on to the Embankment Club and ran the Soul Time Promotions there for a couple of years.
I then went on to start a new breed night called The Buzz in Northampton, Kettering, Bedford and Leicester and also DJ'd for Blow Up and started guesting for Eddie Pillar (Acid Jazz) and various other Deed Funk nights across the country.
In 2000 The Buzz won the best alternative/retro Club Night at the BBC awards for the first time and since then we have won it again on two other occasions.
This year my new breed friends and I started to think about running a new breed soul night that we have called Yum Yum and formed the Northampton Lost Souls. I'll let you know how we get on with that ;0)
My motto is "If it's a good dance tune I don't give a monkeys when it was recorded"
Music from the 1960's still sounds fresher than most of the new MTV crap of today.
Anyway I look forward to seeing some of you out and about in the next few months and if you do manage to make it along to one of my nights I promise that you will take home with you some fond memories and plenty of new friends.

Opps I was think of The Birds then wasn't I lol, not David & The Giants. I must have gone all-psychedelic on myself then.
I remember Graham well mate. I bought most of his 60's stuff from him when he went down the modern route.
Fabulous times buddy and I am very proud of my musical routes because of those great venues and stunning DJ's.
I remember Malc Smith as well and the revelation he was also a massive fan of Toya Wilcox whilst waiting outside the Oddfellows. And Ally turning up at Hinckley All-nighter late one night with a few records to sell cause he's had a barney with his missus.
Happy day's

Prestatyn 2008 - Lookback from the Modern Side

A great lookback at Prestatyn 2008 from the modern side originally posted on EMS and also posted on the forum here
Prestatyn 2008 - Lookback from the Modern Side
"Thought I'd do my usual look back for this event ..its huge and I make no apologies because there was so much to take in 🙂
Prestatyn 2008 was an absolute blast from the start to the last, it was just jam packed with magical moments, musical highs, top social crack ,and spending lots of time with really good friends and chatting with people I don't catch up with often enough.
Personally this one for me was all about the live acts ..rarely do we see such contemporary live music diversity in one place and all the acts fulfilled different musical needs...just perfection packaged up in one weekend and not only did they not disappoint ,each of them was absolutely flawless and unforgettable in their own right.
I always love Friday night , walking in to the modern room and seeing old mates like Kev, Nik,Martyn Stella and John, already bedded in with the Midlands posse.. looking around the room all the usual suspects were in attendance from far and wide and great to see Heather on board for this one as well :-))
Chatting and dancing was the order of the day and then front and centre for Wado.. there was a lovely atmosphere in the room and the big man came on and just totally won everyone over from the second he opened his mouth. Vocally he was every bit as superb as his albums have testified to but what was so unexpected was the sheer energy, exuberance and overwhelming stage presence of the guy , he told us he was celebrating his 38th Birthday and was in party mode from the off. He just simply rocked and it was fascinating to see him work that very big room , I think initally aside from the people who are aware of him that there was a bit of apathy in the room with the usual people who just stay at the back chatting but as he started to sing and then reminisce about his family upbringing and total love affair with black music he began to win over the heart of everyone there , at one point he was so frustrated by all the equipment , and barriers that he just jumped off the stage and came out onto the floor and danced around the room with everyone like the showman he is .
He did all the songs I wanted to hear , All About You , So Glad, Where Do We Go For Love,All Night All Love ,Besides, Shake amongst others and his tribute to Luther was just vocally awesome and made me cry ..he is vocally so like him at times its breathtaking .I have to also mention his two backing vocalists who were absolutely spot on and great performers in their own right too.
Wado is a consumate performer and with bias (admittedly) I have to say seeing him was right up there with the best live performances ,he came , he sang , he had an instant rapport with his audience , he won everyone over and he nailed it :-))))
It was a case of being on a massive high all night after that and we stayed on the dance floor until the room closed .
It wasn't very long at all before the next highlight of the weekender in Pete Simpson , if ever there was a complete opposite of Friday nights performance then this was it ..poles apart yet nothing to choose between them for very different reasons . No showman here, just Pete sat on a stool supported gently by Glenn Worthington on percussion and all I can say is it was totally ,TOTALLY reminiscent of Angela Johnson's Sunday afternoon Hilton performance . He doesn't have a massive big powerful vocal ,he has a deep, heartfelt ,effortless and very ,very sweet range, I really cant describe what happened in there on Saturday but it was just spine tingling ..last time I saw Pete Simpson he was rocking a packed to the rafters Bacardi Room at Southport this time saw the other side of him ,emotional ,warm ,humble, modest ,softly spoken ,obviously spiritual and just singing from the heart to the intimate crowd who had the good manners to gather before him ,he's young , gorgeous, and he just blew us all away .. completely unforgettable in every sense of the word and the definition of true contemporary quality soul music in 2008,what its all about ...unreal !!!
My Saturday night was spent in the house room, with Jamie opening and closing the night it was very long but I wouldn't have missed it for the world he just rocked it and proud doesn't even come close to describing things ..feet on fire ,totally and utterly sleep deprived but worth every aching second .My son loves that room and he always goes the extra mile their and bless him he worked his socks off .
Brilliant atmosphere in there all night , with all the DJ's - Girthy, Mark ,Fish, Neil and Bob - adding something to the melting pot of soulful house and jazz ..top ,TOP night ,goes without saying that the highlight was having Wade in there dancing for the whole of Jamie's last 2 hours ,double decking with him ( I didn't know he was a house DJ as well ) and a stunning impromptu vocal over a Franck Roger instrumental from him..followed by a battle of who could give most on the EQ's ..just mind blowing .At 6am I was fit to drop and was desolate to hear J pic up the mic and say " what do you think ..shall we carry on ??" to a resounding yes from a packed floor and as much as I love him ,my body had just given up so we had to miss the end 😞 but Mr Wilson was one of those still throwing himself about on the dancefloor..top bloke ;-)))
By Sunday afternoon we were totally and utterly wrecked but I have to say that musically it was my favourite session ..Steve Lloyd played some quality jazz tunes and then for me personally came the set of the weekend from Steve Jackson ..absolutely blinding from start to finish just top quality cracking all era mid-tempo tuneage that showcased his radio show to the hilt and was presented so professionally in Steve's inimitable way ...I needed that set so much and it was just total weekender perfection for me ... Steve I loved it and would so love a playlist please ;-))))
Shaun and Bob went on to do their thing and from what I heard it sounded cracking and a nice blend of new and classic music presented in their own unique way ..two really nice genuine guys with an obvious love of their music.
Onto the last of the live acts and that was Afro Elements ..I wasn't sure what to expect but what we got was musicianship of the highest order, they absolutely rocked ..showcasing tracks from their album in such a way that made their music come totally to life ,they were totally awesome .Every single one of them was a top musician ,the horn section just blew me away and the percussionist was in a class of his own , he was an older gentleman who the band said toured on the Northern Soul circuit in the 60ts !!!! absolutely astonishing , the whole band is class ,they would have been stunning enough on their own but the inclusion of their vocalist Cherrie ( who I've since found out is the neice of Mica Parish ) made an even bigger impression and not just on the ten young lads with our party ( and even some of the older lads with our party :-)!!) , not only was she stunningly beautiful but the girl has a lovely laid back style and an amazing voice which blended perfectly to interpret the jazzy vibes of their groove...I loved them ,they were top class, and I have to add that the sound engineers must have pulled out all the stops because every single musician could be heard to perfection with chrystal clear clarity ..and that was the case with all the live acts .....what an absolutely incredible finish to a weekender...unforgettable!!!.
I've concentrated on the live performers because I doubt I'll ever see three such diverse acts on one showcase again so different but all top class with very contrasting deliveries .. what this music is all about for me and I am convinced that if people from the Northern Room would have ventured in they would have loved them too ,they were each of them faultless..(I have a few videos which I'll get Jamie to upload and you'll see what I mean )
I have to mention Glenn Worthington on percussion also who played out of his skin over the weekender more especially in the House of Soul , his hands are wrecked and he never stopped ..I don't think he slept between Thursday and Sunday ..top musicianship from him as ever and an added incentive to this event for me always.
So another Prestatyn comes and goes , yes the weather was not good and the chalets are crappy but I loved it and it flew by in a heartbeat ..one of the nicest things for me was being looked after as ever by my friend Dave Lucas who puts up with all my moans and hurting feet and 'princess syndrome' ..thankyou Dave :-)) So lovely too see and have a little catch up with so many EMS devoutees...all lovely people.
Thanks to Fish, Sandy Mark and everyone involved for a wonderful time and Mark you fulfilled a dream for me by inviting Wado in particular..I'll never forget any of those performances .
Thank you
Lin

Prestatyn 2008 & Queen Vic
Posted by Tony Foster, 04 March 2008
Just recovering from a busy weekend at Prestatyn. I won't bore you with the accommodation, we all know by now what to expect!!! On the whole it was a very enjoyable weekend, catching up with old friends and listening to some new and wonderful tunes, especially the time I spent in the Queen Vic. Friday night was superb especially the guys who played the hour of Ska/Reggae, I am sure that most of you would agree that by now this popular spot should be extended into at least half a day. Robbo and co. Fantastic!!! I did catch my very good friend John Weston dancing to a bit of Ska with some lovely girls.
Saturday was superb all day whichever room you went in. Saturday night we stayed in the main room to watch the artists. Gwen Owens and family were superb, the Del Larks were ok but the extended version of Job Opening was a bit much, Jerry Williams performance was pure class with classics like 'I'm the lover man' and 'If you ask me'. Gloria Jones performance was sadly a bit of a let down, she looked great but her voice over the years has not stood the test of time, with the help of the backing singers she did her classics 'Tainted love' and 'Come go with me'. The best and the most outstanding by far had got to be The Precisions, classics like 'Such misery', 'Why girl', 'If this is love', 'Instant heartbreak' and the best for me was 'I wanna tell my baby'. Absolutely superb and I would say The Precisions are probably one of the very best I have seen over the years. DJ wise Andy Dyson was outstanding and Butch and Tim Brown were just awesome.
Sunday night in the Queen Vic. If you were not there you missed a superb few hours of quality soul.
Keith Money, John Weston and Tim Brown.
The line up just doesn't come any better than this on a Sunday night. Keith and John paired up for a cracking hour which included tracks like 'Ster-phonics - Don't leave me' and 'The Magnetics - Lady in green'. Followed by an hour with Tim Brown. The guy needs no introductions, the spot was fantastic and he played some known, lesser known and about to break tracks. What a way to spend a Sunday night. Then it was over to the main room to listen to Roger Banks and Dave Rimmer's spot. They kept the dance floor full, playing quality Northern and R&B tracks.
On the whole a very enjoyable weekend. I also found a couple of nice 45's for the collection, winner all round.
I nearly forgot, I came across this lady who had just got Jerry Williams autograph.

Bishops Wood Soul Club Review
Posted by Tony Foster, 28 December 2007 ·
Bishops Wood Soul Club
Bishops Wood Village Hall
Ivetsey Rd, Bishops Wood
Nr Wolverhampton
ST19 9AE
Saturday 22nd December 8.00pm - 1.00am
We had a great start, only 50 minutes from Stoke-on-Trent via the M6.
First impressions of Bishops Wood Soul Club. There was ample parking, a great dance floor and an excellent sound system. Good start! There is a seating area to the right of the dance floor where you can still hear the music, but can have a conversation without holding a hand over one ear and shouting down someone else's, I think we have all been to those venues.
It also has a well lit record bar and for the smokers and very well presented patio area with heaters and it's under cover. What more could you want, perhaps a bar with sensible prices and clean toilets? It's got it!!! One of the most impressive venues I have been to since Bretby Country Club days!!!
Music policy is superb supplied by Col and Gaye Kidson and not forgetting Larry Mc who proved to everyone that you don't have to spend a fortune to find dance floor fillers, just play the other side.
Little Scotty and Paul Gould were guest DJ's. Little Scotty played a superb spot!!! Mainly 60's with a few semi known's thrown in like Billy Davis - Stanky on Cobblestone an up and coming monster!!! Get one while you can, John Manship already has this listed at £50.
While I am tipping big tunes on the way up watch out for the TNT Band - Meditation on Cotique, a monster for 2008.
A few tunes that were played on the night.
Lost Souls - Secret of Mine
Tony Gala - In Love
Dells - Run for Cover
Billy Eckstine - I wonder why
Guitar Ray - You're gonna wreck my life
Capitols - Don't say maybe baby
Tommy Navarro - Cried my life away
Karen Sue - Something on my mind
Metros - Time changes things
Survivors - Good Baby
The list went on and on!!
If you do nothing else in 2008 go to this venue, they already have four all-nighters lines up for next year as well as a monthly soul night. 10/10 Also an added bonus no annoying sound limiter!!! If you want to hear more great tunes from Col, Gaye and Larry get down to the Aquarius, Saturday 29th December !!!

Saturday 24th November In the memory of Nige Shaw
Full marks to the organisers. Great venue, great music and a great event in the memory of Nige Shaw. A true tribute to the man and his love of the music. Over £2,000 raised, fantastic!!!
Some great tunes were played to cater for everyone's tastes. From really rare to something in everybody's box. I particular liked Dave Rimmers - The Idols !!! What a 45!!!
Dave has an outstanding collection and always focuses on quality rather than rarity. Although a lot of his quality 45's are really rare!!!
The Magnetics - I Have a Girl, is one!!!!
But to everyone who took part in the event, well done!!! Especially the guys who did all the hard work organising the event.
Sean Chapman and Nige Brown did a great spot. Elipsis - People from Sean, this seems to be growing from strength to strength!!!
The only downside was the noise limiter, I like the music loud!!! But on the whole a great place to visit!!! 10/10
Kings Hall Stoke

One of the leading all-nighters in the country. Slightly down in numbers but none the less entertaining. Over the years it has become slightly predicatable in the tunes that are played there, the normal oldies but goodies mixed in with some of the top rare tunes.
All the DJ's played equally good spots, but a special thanks to Butch for playing Elipsis - People, what a tune!!!! First time played at Stoke and believe it or not played upstairs in the modern room by Soul Sam in the same hour as Butch. Let me tell you it went down a stormer. Probably the biggest tune at the moment. I wonder if Tim Brown has got one yet?
Nice to see so many promoters from other venues supporting the all-nighter. Dave Evison still packed the floor as ever with his selection of all era Soulful tunes. I can take my hat of to Dave, he was terrific in the days of the Casino breaking such tunes as the Steinways and the Majestics and is still there today playing tunes from TJ Williams to the Valentines - Breakaway, nice spot Dave.
Stafford Rangers On The Soul Side!

Saturday 6th October
Visit to Stafford Rangers Soul Night
It was a great night Saturday at the Rangers in Stafford. Superb quality Soul spun by all.
Great atmosphere, top tunes, great DJ's and a great venue.
Neil Self the guest DJ from Soulfusion played some incredibly good Northern and Modern Soul tracks to a very appreciative audience. Shute and John Fisher, the founder members kept the dance floor full all of the evening and for me it was the first time back behind the decks and to be at Stafford was even better.
Don't miss this venue, this is where the soul music is quality and the atmosphere and the friendliness of the venue are overwhelming. It reminded me at times as a cross between the 100 club at Mr M's.
There was a wide range of music from floor packing oldies to monster newies and modern soul tracks throughout the night.
Get down to Stafford the Soul Night everyone is talking about! Along with DDA this is the place for breaking new tunes!
Not far from where the legendary Top of The World was.

Time to make a soulful DJ contribution. A number of people asked when I would be DJ'ing again.
I took a few years out and stood back for a while observing the music. Mmmm!
Past Soulful events included Tony's Empress Ballroom, Blackburn, all-nighters. Courtesy of Mick and Little Scotty.
Hyde, Blackburn and Droylsden all-nighters. Courtesy of Mark Bicknell
Soul nights in previous years included Bretby, Queens etc. Great Soul nights at Crewe Alex, the list goes on. I never forget my old mates Robbo and Bob Hinsley.
Bob Hinsley was one of the first DJ's to put me on at his Soul night in Manchester and I never forgot it. There are lots of people who you can remember over the years, Dave Rimmer and John Manship who distributed tapes of my past Dj spots and helped me no end. Thank you.
If you want a Soul sampler cd containing some of the tracks on the current playlist. Let me know! I will arrange it for you to get one.
Just a few things I will be playing.
Bobby Angelle - It's just got to be that way
Al Gardner - Sweet Baby
California Rock Choir - Whoever you are
Charles Lamont - I've got to keep movin'
Emile Griffith - Going Going Gone

Kents New Breed ( RnB With Added Popcorn ) CD - inc Luther Ingram

Out on Monday! Kents latest includes the much awaited Luther Ingram - Baby Dont you weep track! That floor filling track seeing the light of day for the first time is enough for a news item by itself, when you add that its rubbing shoulders with a large handfull of quality tracks as it breaks through the doors then it does look like this release from kent is one that goes straight on the must buy list.
info from Ace Records tip top site
The third of Kent’s ventures into the world of R&B dance music goes one step further into the world of musical categories by including tracks suited to the Belgian Popcorn scene. This genre of music grew up in the early 70s when like the UK’s Northern Soul scene, the hip teenagers of their day preferred the original dance music of the 60s to the records that were coming out of the US and UK at that time.

The big difference was that their favourite records weren’t “on the fours” beat, sub-Motown sounds, but had a more mid-tempo, dance rhythm that they could slow jive to; as in Nappy Brown’s 1961 Savoy recording ‘Coal Miner’ on this CD. Though that record would not have been issued in Belgium, or indeed anywhere else in Europe, these intrepid record hunters scoured mail order lists and took trips to the US to find such gems, which in turn gave the DJs with the new discoveries kudos and the admiration of their small band of fanatical followers. Davenport and Cooley’s song ‘Fever’ is often taken as the blueprint for the successful Popcorn sound and at least three (coincidentally all previously unissued) such influenced songs are present from Boyce Cunningham, Harold Atkins and the recently christened Mr A N Other. These are all black or at least black sounding vocals from R&B stables Frisco, Downey and Old Town, and as this is their debut, they will cause much interest around central Western Europe where the Popcorn world still turns.
In the mid 80s when Northern Soul’s accepted beats became more varied, many sounds originally played on the Popcorn scene like Sam Fletcher’s ‘I’d Think It Over’ were then spun on the Northern scene too. That co-operation and cross pollination between collectors and scenes has continued so much, that erstwhile Northern fans have been converted into full-on Popcorn believers. The more dated of these sounds, to Northern Soul ears, have been programmed into the New Breed R&B club scene, which often earns itself a separate room at Northern venues, but the biggest records often cross over onto the main Northern dance floors.
This CD is still aimed primarily at that late 50s / early 60s R&B crowd and has avoided the poppier excesses of the Popcorn scene which has featured records by Petula Clark, The Ames Brothers and Tommy Dorsey’s Orchestra at its nadir. The opening track will make all lovers of black music from the golden age happy, if not delirious. For some five or more years I have been spinning Luther Ingram’s unissued master tape version of Fred Bridges and Harrison Smith’s ‘Oh Baby Don’t You Weep’ at Northern Soul and R&B clubs all over Europe. Virtually from the very first spin it has been a success and has gone on to acquire “massive” status. Many people will buy this CD for the compelling vocals and insistent rhythm of this opening track alone; some may not even care what the other 23 tracks are.
New Breed R&B is a relatively recent era and style to have collectors and connoisseurs shine the spotlight on it, so the chances of finding obscure releases, unissued master tapes and acetates of this style of music is still high. Paul Clifton’s ‘She Wobbles When She Walks’ on the tiny Teen Post label is a very high quality R&B recording that combines a tough R&B approach to a catchy pop song. This now popular formula is also followed on here by Gene Burks, Billy Bland and Lena Calhoun among others.
The grittier end of the soul spectrum is provided by Goldwax’s Barbara Perry whose ‘A Man Is A Mean Thing’ has to be heard to be believed. It features a tempo acceleration midway through the recording that Jeremy Clarkson would be stunned by. Barbara Brown, Albert Washington and the Charmaines also give us tough, uptempo soul productions which are ideal for the dancefloor, while the myth of Mr Dynamite’s James Brown inspired opus ‘Sh’mon’ is finally nailed.
More previously unreleased material comes from Gladys Tyler whose ‘Someone Else Has Taken My Place’ has been played from acetate by top, pioneering, R&B DJ Roger Banks for nearly ten years now. Another Gladys, this time Ms Bruce, comes up with a newly discovered R&B track with the moody ‘I've Got a Feeling For You Baby’ which will please fans who love to dance to something new.
60s R&B tracks include Banny Price’s in-demand ‘You Love Me Pretty Baby’ which now fetches up to £250 a copy, while Marry/Merry Clayton’s very rare first 45 ‘I’ve Got My Eyes On You’ has a price tag in excess of that. It was the musical quality, popularity and scarcity of these discs that elevated them to such a high priced status. Other straight blues records come from BB King with the interestingly titled ‘Beautician Blues’ and the unissued King James ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ a hip variation on ‘What’d I Say’. Eugene Church, Vernon Green and Terry & Jerry’s contributions are mainstream late 50s R&B which suit today’s club goers to a Tee. That must make the original blues aficionados smile, though this compilation shows they should not rest on their laurels; the New Breed is already here.

Once Upon A Time member warns of Bolton Wigan Play farce

North West viewers may be aware of what appears to be a re-working of the "Once Upon A time in Wigan" play on show planned to run in the near future at Bolton Octagon.
Amazingly it seems that this production is going to be done using
"a live band of brilliant actor musicians pumping out classic Northern Soul tracks in the Octagon Theatre’s signature style"
Its scheduled for a 2 week run and going by the forum is looks like the way it has been advertised is already causing some confusion amongst soul fans.
The soul source member who devised the actual play in its original format posted the below in the soul source forums
His view makes interesting reading and hopefully they will help avoid any more confusion amongst soul fans between this local production and the acclaimed original play

BOLTON OCTAGON are staging a play called 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan. LIVE'

'LIVE' being the key word to watch out for! It stands for live music and singing. No, not from soul artists, but from the actors themselves!

THIS CRAP IS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PLAY THAT MY COMPANY TOURED TO THOUSANDS OF SOULIES IN 2004!

THIS IS A MUSICAL WHERE, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, WHITE ACTORS SING THE SONGS TO A HOUSE BAND. A bit like THE WHEELTAPPERS AND SHUNTERS SOCIAL CLUB!

They have been deliberately trying to confuse in the advertising and I had to ask them to remove a newspaper quote about my play, that they were using to advertise theirs!

I devised this play, based on my experiences of going to wigan and Mick Martin wrote it. Unfortunately, as he was a friend of 20 years, I trusted him to look after it and not sell it to the highest bidder. MISTAKE....He has since proved himself to be a 'soul less ******!

The guy is not and was not, a soulie. I took him to a couple of nighters in the eighties and he just got pissed up! The production worked in its presentation, the actors, the film, the setting, but, most of all, the use of a real and narrative sound track. Mark Babbage, the director, hasn't got a clue about our scene and its soulful ethic! If he did, he wouldn't dare trivialise it, by doing a musical execution of something that means a lot, to a lot of people.
Watch out for Winstanley popping up at the opening! It will definitely get coverage on his show and I would expect him to be djing at the opening (if there is money involved!)

From the heart

Paul-s

On The Soul Side - Loft Bar@bournemouth Uni - 16th Feb 08
Posted by Dave Morris, 25 February 2008 ·
Well time certainly does fly.It seemed only like yesterday that we were at the December do.Lots of usual things to do.All flyers have been put out at venues visited.Sorted out when I could get in to set up.All dj's confirmed they'd be there.Only difference was new venue at same place but different way in.
So,on a bitterly cold saturday evening got to venue around 6'ish.James,bar manager was there albeit a bit down as his beloved Arsenal were getting tubbed by Man Ure.All furniture had been moved off dancefloor so only decks to set up.Eventually got them sorted and god did it sound good through the new system installed.
Put up notices outside for directions to get in.My partner Viv turned up about 7.45 and we were ready to go.As is the norm slow build up which does get you wondering if its all been in vain but soon picked up and we had yet another healthy attendance although some local soulies still missing.Hope to see you at next one.
All dj's turned up and big thanks to Simon Bridger for coming from Brighton,Chris Thorley from Farnborough,Danny North from Chessington and last but not least Ian Burt from Taunton.
Some great stuff played early doors then Chris finally dragged them onto floor.Next up was Danny,a much underrated dj with some quality tunes in his box.Ian carried on from Danny with some monster tunes.Simon played some quality tunes then Chris carried it on.It was left to me to finish off so slowed tempo down a notch or two.
Everyone was very complimentary and will hopefully be back on April 19th.
Would also like to say thanks to Mike for complimenting Danny on his 2nd set.I know how taken aback he was and it meant a lot.
Hopefully we'll go from strength to strength and enjoy many more nights.
Dave.
Sat 15th December Bournemouth Uni Northern Night
Posted by Dave Morris, 17 December 2007
After taking over running the soul nights at Bournemouth Uni from Karen (soulgirl) I wondered what I'd let myself in for.Had flyers done well in advance and got out and about in the 3 months leading up to it flyering as many local do's as possible.
Got dj's booked well in advance.
Had a few comments on the basis its the 3rd saturday of month and loads going on,looked about on various messageboards/forums couldn't find anything locally so all ok there then.
The week before was when I started to get nervous about things.Went out & bought spare stylus's and couple of other things I thought I may need.
Saturday arrived so went off christmas shopping to take my mind off things.Afternoon came, couple of calls asking if night still on,too right was the reply. Then one of my dj's Moldie phoned about Chris Thorley, one of my other dj's,he was still in hospital so Danny North was on his way down to stand in ( Top Man).
Got to Uni at 6.30pm to set up and found out builders had moved in that morning and way was blocked to venue meaning a long walk round to get in.Fortunately security decided to open up doors as another do on as well that night.
7.00pm venue set up as Moldie arrives and 30 mins later he's on the decks spinning his new stuff.
8.00pm my partner Viv arrives to help on door and I must say what a superb job she did as well so a massive thank you to her.
Now am starting to worry about people turning up but, a steady stream of soulies through the evening means I had 55+ in.
Well happy with that. All the dj's - Moldie,Ian Spittle,Danny North & Paul McKay all played blinding sets.Dancefloor busy throughout.
Big thanks to everyone that came especially the couple from near Plymouth who could've gone to Weston but came across to Bournemouth on a bitterly cold night.
Next one is Sat 16th Feb 2008 and I can't wait. We've got the smaller venue (The Loft) but newly refurbished and new dancefloor all is looking up for soul on the south coast.
Dave.
Soul Shoes @ Southampton Sat.10th Nov.
Posted by Dave Morris, 12 November 2007 ·
Saturday night went along to Soul Shoes @ The Riverside Club in St.Denys Southampton.Run for the past 25 years very successfully by Gary Todd & his missus Ann.Parked up outside the club which is normally very unusual as parking is at a premium around there.Up the stairs, paid our money and in.
Now this is not a club if you're into your soul rare. This is just a small club playing tried and tested oldies with the odd gem thrown in for a crowd that are friendly and like to have a dance and a good time.
They also like to throw in the odd ska tune or two which is not to some peoples taste but the crowd love it.
I for one have been going to these nights for the past 15 years and have never had a bad one.I always try to support Gary even at his other venue (Bishopstoke) as he knows what people want and supplies it.
So in closing a big congratulations to Toddy for 25 years and long may it continue.
Dave.
Car Parking At Royal Bournemouth Hospital
Posted by Dave Morris, 05 November 2007 ·
Am going to start my blog with a moan.Went to physio at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital today.Got there about 15 mins early with a view to getting parking slot.Drove round three pay & displays everywhere full.Asked security/car park attendant if anywhere else.Just keep driving round he said.Obviously got loads of money considering price of petrol these days.
Double parked outside physio while I told them would be late due to no parking spaces.Same guy comes along and tells me to move car.Would've knocked him over if given chance.Eventually parked in Tesco about 500 yards away.Still that was free.
Just as I got to physio reception I was called in.Don't know if my backs any better after all the prodding, bending over I had to do.
Off to back strengthening class on friday, that should be good for a laugh.Hopefully will have a job then as well as have interview on thursday.
Just wish when they built the place and had loads of space they'd put more spaces there instead of a hotel.
Rant over
Dave.

Note to the person who as a guest added two unsavoury comments which I've now deleted,if you haven't got anything decent to post THEN DON'T!!!

New Joe Boy Precisions Album And Ep launch at Prestatyn 2008

The Joe Boy and Inferno labels are being revived to jointly issue an EP and CD album by The Precisions to tie up with their appearance at Prestatyn. The album tracks the complete Drew label single releases incluidng the withdrawn "Sugar Ain't Sweet".

1 - Such Misery
2 - A Lover's Plea
3 - Sugar Ain't Sweet
4 - Why Girl
5 - What I Want
6 - If This is Love (I'd Rather Be Lonely)
7 - You'll Soon be Gone
8 - Instant Heartbreak (Just Add Tears)
9 - Dream Girl
10 - A Place
11 - Never Let Go

plus bonus tracks
12 - I Do, Don't You
13 - Such Misery (unreleased Ist version, featuring Paul Merritt)
14 - Send Me A Sign - Roger Fluker
15 - Baby You're Mine - Lou Ragland

George McGregor (Rose Battiste,Terri Bryant, Barbara Mercer, Timmy Willis etc) was A&R director at Sidra/Drew. He has written a foreword to the album in which he says The Precisions on stage dance routnes were so amazing they put everyone else, including The Temptations, in the shade. He says that if the group had been on Motown they would have been major stars. Turns out that George recorded "Mr Soul Satisfaction" - Timmy Willis at his own cost. He did it at Muscle Shoals to get the Southern Soul horns sound and then took the master to Sidra and did a deal with them for it. They subsequently licenced it on to Veep and the success of this meant George got the job as A&R director.

He knew The Precisions from when they were on D-Town and he joined Sidra after "Such Miisery" had been released. He decided to base the sound of the group around Billy Prince as lead vocalist and co-wrote "Why Girl" to capture the sound he envisaged. At the time copies of "Sugar Ain't Sweet" c/w "What I Want" had been pressed as promos to be the second Drew single but were off centre. Rather than remaster them George took the chance to get rid of "Sugar Ain't Sweet" which had been put together by Dale Warren as the A side of the single and replace it with "Why Girl". I imagine any spare copies of "Sugar Ain't Sweet" were junked and this is why it is so rare.

George was partners with Mike Terry at the time and got him in to arrange the recordings, most of which were done at Terra Shirma except for "If This Is Love" which was laid down at United Sound. He has revealed that the female intro to "A Place" was done by Sandra Neal, who was a secretary at Sidra, because no female vocalists were around at the time!

The bonus tracks are recordings that never got released by Drew. "I Do, Don't You" was a massive tune at the Trentham Gardens al-nighters and has been the cause of speculation as to whether it is The Precisions or not. George still has the master tape and says it definitely is the group, he wrote the song and produced the track, with Mike Terry doing the arranging.

Track 13 is the first version recorded of "Such Misery" and was tried using Paul Merritt on lead vocals. He left the group shortly afterwards and his version was not used for the first Drew 45.
This version wes previously released on a Joe Boy single credited to Timmy Willis due to duff info.

"Send Me A Sign" was thought to be The Precisions in the past but is in fact the group's choreographer Roger Fluker. His dance routine inventions were so important to The Precisions that Drew let him make a record!

"Baby You're Mine" is another Drew recording credited to The Precisions in the past. It is in fact Lou Ragland.

There is also an EP coming out Why Girl Instant Heartbreak I Do, Don't You Such Misery (Paul Merritt version) Both the EP and album will be on sale at Prestatyn.

Any record dealers interested in buying stock at Prestatyn should PM me.

All the Best

The Road To Addiction............
Posted by Russ Vickers, 20 February 2008 ·
It's the Spring of 1977 & my whole life was about to change forever..........working class family, Comprehensive School education, small town or should I say village upbringing in a typical Midlands semi rural setting. I was 15 years old & for almost 10 years the sound of the Rare Soul Underground had been pounding in the hearts of the 'In Crowd'..........to which I was completely oblivious !!!.
I have alway's loved music. My memories from a small child were full of The Beatles, Elvis, Johnny Cash & many other pop hits of the time, that my family would listen to on the radio or the old record player. I was allowed to play the old 45's lieing around too, so from quite an early age, I was 'spinning tunes'.
At school we talked about T.Rex, David Bowie, Roxy Music etc, but filtering thru the 'Glam' via the school disco I started to become aware of soul music, commercial disco really, I would go to my local record store & buy a lot of these 12's, I would also consult Blues & Soul for the recommendations & eagerly await thier arrival to be picked up at the store, much of my pocket money, would be spent in this way, & much to my Mother's consternation & the obligatory cries of 'Turn that Rubbish Down' I would play them constantly........I still have some of those early purchases.........& boy are they embarrassing now, but I wouldnt part with them for the world....... I still didn't 'really' get it, I enjoyed these records, but my heart was yet to be totally captured......the hairs on the back of the neck, had yet to raise to those truly soulful rythmns..............but the journey had began....... oh & what a journey.

Article on the death Of Tiny Topsy from Jet mag 1964

From JET Magazine, September 3, 1964
"Tiny Topsy", a five foot, 250-pound-plus entertainer, whose name in real life was Otha Lee Moore Hall, died in Chicago's Cook County Hospital of a brain hemorrhage and scores of show business folks mourned her passing.
Tiny, 34, married to a South Side Chicago night club owner, Samuel Hall, began her career in the all-negro Chicago suburb of Robbins at the age of five. She eventually worked with such well-known figures as comedian Dick Gregory, the late "Blues Queen" Dinah Washington and Bandleader Red Saunders. She belted the blues, ala Big Maybelle, one of her idols, and was a lightfooted dancer despite her bulky figure.
On hearing of her death, comedian Redd Foxx, Saunders, and tenor saxist Paul Bascomb raised a "sizable" donation at Chicago's Regal Theatre in her behalf.
She is survived by her father, Casey Moore, of Chicago, in addition to her husband. Eight pallbearers, nearly all members of the band that played her husband's club, were required to lift her body.

Kettering Soul Society - Cornmarket Hall - 9th February 2008.
A really nice venue, easy to find with a large carpark just outside and with a great polished wooden floor. I Had been told by a few beforehand not to expect much music wise but we were pleasantly surprised by the good selection of 'Across The Board' music that was played by the residents throughout the evening with all of them playing great sets.
Many thanks to Steve Towers & Trev Davison for inviting me to do the Guest Spot we had a great evening. The crowd was a bit low in numbers but with so much on and especially the Rugby Anniv. just down the road that was probably to be expected.

DKOF Peterborough - 5th October 2007
Another great night at DKOF last night, numbers were a bit down on usual but there was a great friendly atmosphere and everyone seemed up for hearing some different tunes and all I spoke with at the end said they'd really enjoyed the night. Mick, Ray and Neal all played some great stuff (hopefully they'll put some playlists up later) and Tony Parker excelled himself with a blinding spot. This is certainly now one of the best nights in the area for rare and underplayed soul............all credit to the DKOF Lads for making it happen.............Can't wait for the next one on December 22nd.

Al Wilson - New Kent Cd Out Now Searching for the Dolphins: the Complete Soul City Recordings and More

Kents got some new cd releases out, the first one that gets a highlight is a comp from a familar name
Al Wilson - Searching for the Dolphins: the Complete Soul City Recordings and More 1967-1971
Release notes clip below
IIn The Basement magazine carries a Vinyl Spotlight feature, which look at twenty tracks from LPs not available on CD, and also picks one ‘special’ album to cover in its entirety. Way back in November 1998, in issue #8, the in-depth scrutiny was on all-time top-tenner, SEARCHING FOR THE DOLPHINS by Al Wilson. I summed up by saying “This set deserves like-for-like CD reissue, not least because my vinyl is worn out!” Well, it has taken a little over nine years for my wish to be granted but the wait has been worthwhile. I can wallow in Gene Page’s splendid arrangement of Fred Neil’s The Dolphins, interpreted by the magnificently rich vocals of Al Wilson and lovingly produced by Johnny Rivers for his own Soul City Records in pristine sound quality.

Born in Meridian, MS, in June 1939, Al Wilson settled in California after serving with Uncle Sam, singing in local clubs as a solo performer and working in a line-up of the Jewels, which subsequently became Liberty recording artists, the Rollers. Passing through Johnny “Legs” Harris & the Statesmen and its metamorphosis, the Soul Brothers (as the drummer) Al met up with ex-Motown staffer, Marc Gordon, manager of the Versatiles (who became 5th Dimension). He took that group, along with our man, off to the fledgling Soul City company. Al had to be patient with the label to get his first record released but, after a handful of 45s and chart success with Do What You Gotta Do and The Snake, the stunning “Searching For The Dolphins” album hit the streets.

Do What You Gotta Do, penned by staff-writer, Jim Webb,...

45s Still In The Customs Shed
Posted by Dave Moore, 26 January 2008 ·
Just thought I'd log the events of our move to Spain and vent a little frustration at the 'shower of s*i*e' that are/were our shippers. We've now been in the new place for 5 weeks. STILL no furniture but more of a concern than that is....no records either! The container arrived in Valencia on 8th January (12 days later than originally agreed) and has sat in the customs shed since. The US company that we contracted have turned out to be the most inept, inneffectual, lacksadasical arseholes I've ever dealt with. I've done a few moves around the world including one other Transatlantic move and all have been relatively smooth. This move is enough to make me wanna 'revert to type' and go back to the US in order 'straighten out' the w*nk*rs. We have now dealt with 5 companies down the chain on this move. Each one is part of the mechanism for an international move but is sub cotracted by the mover not us.
The problem is....they simply don't pay their bills correctly or on time, therefore the Spanish end of the move won't release or deliver our goods until they receive payment. We tracked the shipment, organised the receiving agent, obtained customs clearance, and are now sat waiting for the US company to pay the bills (we've already paid them of course). After at least an hour a day on the phone to the US trying to get people there to realise their contractual obligation we received a bill for an extra nearly two grand! When we did some investigation it was mainly penealty fees because THEY had missed deadlines with paperwork at the point of departure! Have finally whittled it down to 500, although that amount is still due to their incompetence with my motorcycle, we've decided to pay all the bills and try and recoup it from the shipper. Otherwise those liccleblackplasticfingswotweluvsntreshures are gonna be sat in the customs shed til God knows when!
On a lighter note, we now have the satellite connection installed for the phone link and so are fully hooked up on broadband etc now. The files for Issue #7 of There's That Beat! are due at the printers on Monday morning and Jason and I are now feverishly nailing it together between gallons of back coffee and sticky buns for sustainance.
Looking forward to getting out and about to gigs on a regular basis again. Hoping to make the Pisa Allnighter in Feb, followed by Prestatyn and then the Valencia Weekender mid April, at which I've been asked to play a few 45s. Have recce'd a bar in Mojaca with Jonathon for a gig with the Indalo Soul Club starting March 15th and am in the process of pieceing the components for Hitsville Soul Club's annual vinyl-fest together so things are moving on a pace soulwise at least.
All I need now is something to sit on, a decent night's kip in a bed and my bleedin' records!
If I hear "Can I help you with anything else Sir, Have a nice day" one more time, some Yank is gonna 'get a slice" for sure.
Transatlantic Flap On!
Posted by Dave Moore, 30 November 2007 ·
Last year we decided to relocate to Spain. The magazine will still be based in the US and I'll be popping back over on a regular basis but the lack of quality soul events with like minded people has just proved too much in the end. Hey Ho, had a good time, but itchy feet syndrome got the better of us once again. Anyway........had the movers arrive yesterday. A young Israeli was in charge and the two young Guatemalens with him worked their arse off all day. Had a good chat with the Israeli lad (Tony) and found we had a lot in common. He and I have both spent time diving in the same region of the Red Sea and have both spent time at Wadi Rum and Aquaba in Jordan. Then blow me down if the two Guatemalan lads didn't come from an area I have also traipsed about in, in a 'former life". Bev made 'em lunch and I fed 'em cheeseburgers later on.
They did a great job ......until it came to the vinyl. They packed it while I was away on an errand. I returned to see my 'babies' stuffed into a few massive cardboard boxes, many of them laid flat, some upside down and padded out with bits of paper!! Argghh!! I then gave them a lesson in vinyl maintenance (in case they ever pack up another anoraks house).
We repacked every one of them. All in proper crates, right way up, color coded by US/UK origin, and with the loving care and attention that 35 years of building the collection deserves. They thought I was a freak! (Bev agreed with them )
So....I have a 200 box I am manhandling back to Europe and the rest ( about 7000 45s and about 1000LPs) are now 'Bobbin' in the Oggin' for the next 3 weeks or so along with my other prized possession, my 1991 Softail. Bev reckons that the seperation from the 'babies' may well prove to much for the ole ticker and I may throw off this mortal coil before we are reunited with them.
So.... we leave in a week after we've administered the subscribers of the magazine and once everyone's latest issue is safely in the mail and en route, we're back to UK for a weekend (hopefully in time to catch Ronnie Walker's live performance at Chris' NCSC gig and then onto Espana for Chrimbo.
Should see us out and about at UK gigs on a more regular basis next year. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
'til next time........

Soulie Meanderings
Posted by Dave Moore, 20 October 2007 ·
Done bit of wandering about the last few weeks, been a little snowed under with the mag, Hitville SC website updates and other soulie stuff but finally got a few minutes to jot something down'
Hitsville Weekender III now behind us. Had a great weekend with Fergie, Al Pollard, Greety, H, Kev and the girls and the US and Canadian contingents proved to be die hards once again too. Lots of highlights but the two main ones for me were:
The Harthon Guys. To play their records and have them see the type of response their music evokes in people was a real treat. All three of them were blown away by it all. We despatched them back to the airport in a mahooosive limo and the smiles on their faces were priceless.
The Music
Probably the best weekender I've been to as far as the music was concerned. Got to hear all the rare oldies as well as some newer stuff and lots of left "fielders" too. We don't get a chance to dance to music of this quality too often here in the US so I take full advantage and try and get on the dancefloor as much as my "organising duties' allow. The young US DJs are the dog's gonads. In yer face rarities mixed with relatively unknown records and they play to each other as well as the dancefloor which is great. Who cares if the dancefloor wanes for 10 minutes if your playing something worthwhile. A great few hours from The Californian Central Soul Club Crew and Chicago's Rare Soul Millionaires.
Had one 'downer' which was a guy from the UK didn't enjoy it. Fair enough, can't please everyone, but if you travel all the way to Florida from UK for a weekender and then go to bed at 1am at the allnighter then I don't think you've really got into the spirit of things. Ah well, as I say...can't please everyone. The other 70 folks seemed to be having a blast judging by the dancefloor.
Once packed up and everyone eventually despatched home Dave Fergie, Myself and the girls went up to Philly to cover a few of the city's soul landmarks, meet some of it's musical icons and see the Tymes perform. We spent a day at Philadelphia International Records and had the run of the place, including Sigma Sound B thanks to Chuck Gamble's kind generosity and Weldon MacDouga III's ability to get us in anywhere! We also spent an afternoon at Frankford Wayne Mastering. Including an unforgettable trip to the Master Tape vault!
A planned hour's lunch with Weldon, Jimmy Wisner and Billy Jackson turned into a 51/2 hour marathon! A truly fantastic afternoon in which Dave and I were enthralled by stories of Philly's soulful heyday by three legends who helped create it.
Lot's more on the Philly btrip in Issue #6 of the magazine out in December.
On the 27th of this month our soulie adventures continue when Dave Fergson flies over for the weekend as we take a hop skip and a jump down to Tampa to see Billy Paul live on stage with three Chi Town legends. Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler and Sam Gooden and Fred Cash of The Impressions. I think we're taking them to lunch, so full report later.
Hoping to make Guy Hennigan's 50th bash on 3rd Nov in Derby so if I make it....see some of you there hopefully.
'Til next time....good hunting...
A Year In The Planning
Posted by Dave Moore, 04 September 2007 ·
It's Tuesday 4th September and I'm just about to start 4/5 days of mayhem. The Hitsville Annual Weekender kicks off on Thursday Night and between now and then I'll be spending most of my time at the airport in arrivals picking folks up and ferrying them down to the resort or DJ Villa.
Thought I'd use the blog to put a few thoughts down for future reference as it's about to become a bit of a blur for the next few days...
Had some major dramas with the sound equipment this year. Finally sorted but not without clashing heads with the biggest arsholes in the DJ supplier world I've ever come across. I bought a great set of Technics 1210s a year old and fitted new tonearms. Figured in for a penny in for a pound, so took advice from Soul Sources own King Of The Karaoke Pete French and set about purchasing new amp. speakers, cabling etc. Then figured I'd install new headshells/Grado cartsidges and styli. Sent off for the needles to Jerry Raskin (Needle Dr) and the head shells and wiring kits to TopDJGear in NY. Carts and needles arrived. No head shells. Cut a long story short, two months and about 50 phone calls later, still nothing but excuses from what I can only describe as a set of neaderthal morons who seemed to think that because they were 1500 miles away it was ok to constantly try to blow smoke up my arse. I eventually reordered the kit from California and it arrived 4 days later.
Being a bit of a beligerent bastard, I wouldn't let it go and hounded the actual owner of the company for the next three weeks. I used a contact, got his cell # and called him twice a day to update him on what my plan was to destroy his business. Website, Ads in DJ mags, Blogs, personal protest outside his home etc etc. Lo and behold....package came last week. Complimentary headshells, wiring kits and a couple of new groundwires! Tosser!
This years T Shirt is being delivered tomorrow, the new log'd slipmats have arrived and the new wireless mics are en route.
Anyway...kit all assembled, and tested. Sounds fantastic. I'm sure the guys this year will hear the difference. (Hope so, it's cost enough!)
The Hitsville Weekender started when a few long time mates, who also collected records, came out to visit us in Orlando, Florida. It started out as a party at our place but we couldn't accommodate everyone at our house so we hired a room in a hotel. Then we thought, "why not get a dancefloor in?". So we did. The first one was in 2005 and this is our third one now. It's still kept the same atmosphere and ethos of the first one and it's something I have been warned by the guys to ensure stays the same. Just about everyone who comes is a record collector. The whole weekend is geared around collectors who dance. A sort of Dancin' Chinstrokers convention. The UK and US contingents compliment each other perfectly and the whole thing is just a great get together of like minded people. Of course because we only get together once a year there's lots to catch up on and hopefully some vinyl trading along the way!
This year we have three VIP guests joining us in the form of Weldon McDougal III, Luther Randolph and Johnny Stiles, the owners of Harthon Records from Philadelphia back in the 60s. We're setting up an in depth question and answer session and a couple of radio interviews that will be recorded and put up on the Hitsville Soul Club site some time later.
We're all off to BoMa Restaurant in Animal Kingdom on Friday night before the soul night (9-4am) which should be great and then Saturday we have the afternon radio session planned when the guys will double up and play stuff not usually heard or not targeted at the dancefloor per se. Then it's off to Bahama Breeze (A Carribean restaurant), for some great Jamacian Jerk'd up food before hitting the allnighter 8-6am. At three in the morning we serve up pies, pizza etc to sustain us for the push towards dawn. A quick couple of hours kip and then up to the DJ Villa for an afternoon by the pool/jacuzzi and some more sounds before the now legendary Indian Meal in the evening by the pool!
Another great piece of news is that my old mate Alan Pollard and his wife Judi are gonna make it again this year. Al's not been well and had to miss last years. Be great to have them both back in the fold.
So..First pick up is at 2pm this afternoon and the guys trickle in from UK, California, NJ, Chicago, NY over the next couple of days. Loking forward to hearing all their sets and especially on Saturday night as I'm relieved of DJ duties (Yippee!)
I'll post a report up after the event with some of the tales of vinyl comings and goings. Wherever you are this weekend, have a great time....we certainly intend to!
Slip mats look pretty cool eh?
Loma Records Suck!
Posted by Dave Moore, 12 August 2007
No not really......it's just that I've been putting the finishing touches to a feature on the West Coast Warner subsidiary and I can't seem to locate one of the 45s on the label. Offending vinyl is - Bob and Earl - Everybody Jerk b/w Just One Look In Your Eyes - 2006. Lot so people have been helping me trace the record but no one's come up with one or a scan of it! As I suffer from "completion disorder" I'm dreading putting the feature in the mag with one of the scans missing! AAARRGGHH!!
Have also had a nightmare with a certain DJ supply store in NY. Once I have fin lly got my money back - or made a trip up there to take a look inside a certain store owner's spleen, I will relate the story here.
The upside to this dark tumultous period in my life is that we have tracked down Johnny Brantley's missus. JB was the man behind a number of great soul productions including - Sam Williams - Love Slipped Through My Fingers - Tower - Unfortunately he has passed on, but his wife may have photos, anecdotes and info that will finally allow his full story to be told.
Another plus is that I managed to pick up two W/Demos that have eluded me for a while. Mr Fred Bohn of Attic Records came up trumps with a copy of The Exits - You Gotta Have Money b/w Under The Street Lamp - Gemini W/Demo and I'm finnally completing the Bronco label when Viola Wills - I've Got To Have All Of Your Love - W/D drops on the Moore doormat on Tuesday hopefully.
Only had to return one record this week. EBay strikes again! When did VERY GOOD ever mean POOR! Marv Johnson LP Promo too! Gutted!
Biggest bonus of the week...my old Mate Alan Pollard may make the Hitsville Weekender in September. Great news. He was missed at the last one. 4 weeks to go. Can't wait!
Til next time....
Sound Equipment For Weekender
Posted by Dave Moore, 24 June 2007 ·
Spent a frustrating couple of weeks sorting new sound equipment for the Hitsville Soul Club. Got some heaveyweight collectors coming down to spin their wares and want to make sure that the kit is up to the job. Had too many instances myself of being asked to DJ somewhere and turning up to find steam driven turntables with screwdrivers for stylus! Problem is everything has to be "shipped" here in the States. Can't just jump in yer car, trundle down town and buy it. Not in Florida anyway! Most things delivered end up being - Wrong stuff , (Not what you ordered), damaged, or just don't show at all sometimes! So I ordered some bits and sat back with low expectations.
Anyway ..managed to gut a nice set of Technics 1210s delivered. Arrived during the week, all flight cased up. Checked 'em out, all in great minty condition. Luverrley Jubbly!
Speakers arrived the day after from a company in New Jersey. Top blokes. All well packed.
Ordered new heashells, wiring kits and a couple of high grade GRADO cartridges form TopDJGear. Aha...new I was on a roll and it was too good to last. 3 days after I ordered the stuff got an email - "on back order". Back order my arse! They simply wait for an order to come in and then place that order
themselves with Technics, taking a nice slice for themselves and passing all the shipping costs on to their "customers". Told them to "poke it ". I'll do the order direct myself.
Got some advice from the King of UK Kareoke etc, Pete French, and am now awaiting delivery of a Peavy PV2600 amplifier. (Cheers Pete). So...for anyone bringing vinyl to The Hitsville Weekender, either to DJ or do one of the Radio Shows...you can rest assured that everything has been done to ensure your records are played using decent kit and will sound immaculate.
Can't wait to hear Greety's Chuck Holiday and Detroit Sounds Of Friction, out nice and LOUD!
Later.....

Diary Of A Psychotic Mag Editor
Posted by Dave Moore, 13 June 2007
Not really had time to do the blog part of Soul Source justice up to now, but have squeezed a spare 15 minutes out of my day to start one off. Although I suspect I will only be talking to myself, it'll be a good way to put things down and remember them if I need to in future. So..
THERE's THAT BEAT! - Update
We finally got the Quark files for Issue #4 to the printers! Preparing this Issue has been a nightmare! In addition to having an IT crisis (which is still not fully resolved), 3 months solid work all culminated in an allnight session with Jason and I using MSN Messenger to relay our communication in live time, whilst making all the Editorial corrections to the magazine features. Must say it worked a treat but at 4 in the morning and on your 8th cup of coffee you begin to wonder if the effort is all worthwhile! Of course the minute the magazines are delivered you know it is! We completed the work less than an hour before the print deadline!
This Issue should have been capped at 48 pages but unfortunately Jason and I are soulies first and foremost so we couldn't find it in us to cut anything out therefore it's actually 56 pages long! As usual it's all full color, glossy images and rammed full of stuff.
Couple of highpoints whilst preparing this Issue were:
During the Harthon preperation I got to speak at length with all three of the main players Johnny, Luther and Weldon. I'd met Weldon and Luther before along with Bill Oxendine and a few other Philly 'soulsters" but it was my first time with Luther. All three of them are complete gentlemen and kinda remind you of a bygone generation where integrity, manners, and a positive outlook was more the norm. I hope they think we did them justice in the feature. It was an experience I will always treasure.
We were already preparing to publish the Mike Terry story when the original contributor unfortunately pulled out and we had two options:
1. Cancel/Postpone the feature.
or
2. Create it ourselves.
We chose Option 2. Mike Terry's contribution to the Rare Soul scene ranks up with the likes of Van McCoy, Carl Davis, Popcorn Wylie et al and we felt it was a story that needed telling, in full glorious color. So that's what we did. Or rather that's what Jason did. Long sessions with Mike resulted in a great feature that takes look a behind the labels and music of the man and allows Mike to tell it as he experienced it. The Snakepit, The Funk Brothers, Pied Pier, Giant Records, his work with Garland Green and Rhetta Hughes, it's all there in his own words. Fantastic stuff.
Preparing the feature on UK Issued 45s with Neil Rushton brought back some great memories of finding 45s in the dusty second hand (thrift) shops during the 70s/80s. With records from Neil, Dave Ferguson and myself I think we managed to show a great selection of hard to find UK labelled soul.
The first part of our delve into the Motown catalogue is also included in this Issue. We took a look at the collecting of the Motown labels promo copies and will continue the series with Berry Gordy's other labels in the future.
Couple of Venue Reviews round off this Issue. Prestatyn and the Pittsburgh Weekenders, including a day record hunting, are both events that Hitsville Soul Club attended and we give you our thoughts on them both.
Magazine should be up on the website for folks to buy shortly at : www.theresthatbeat.com and we also have a very limited supply of back Issues if anyone needs any.
Quick word about The 3rd Hitsville Rare Soul Weekender: Lots of interest from both US and UK soulies. Have purchased new Technics 1210s, speakers etc so the sound should be MASSIVE this year! Really looking forward to seeing everyone for some records, beer, dancin, beer and more records! No change from last years format. Friday - Soul night until the wee hours, Sat - Radio shows in afternoon followed by The Allnighter. The party at the "DJ Villa" will also take place on the Sunday as usual. Everyone's invited!
Finally...found a record on the Pittsburgh Trip that I hadn't heard before:
Keanya Collins - I'll Get Over It b /w Ain't No Secret - Blue Rock

I'd obviously heard the "Secret" side but the flip was new to me. A fantastic dancer that if it was played must have been spun while I was at the bar as I'm sure it would have gra bbed my attention. So...if you see one knocking about - grab it!
'Til next time.....Good Hunting.

Ever-Soul Label - a new label and its first release from Daptone

A new label along with the first release annouced, from the Daptone people, info from the Daptone website below...

Daptone Records is proud to announce the launch of our new re-issue imprint, EVER-SOUL Records. As avid fans of Rhythm and Blues, Funk, Gospel, Latin, African, and all forms of Soulful Music, we are anxious to use this new arm of our company to extend some of our favorite rare and unreleased records to our customers. Our debut release, Hank Mullen’s ‘He Upset Your Dreams’ b/w ‘Listen’, is a record for which we have special affection . . .
The A side is an up-tempo groover concerning the saddest subject of all; not one, but two broken hearts. This is an effort from the Avengers on the Audel imprint out of Buffalo NY. The band formed in the mid-sixties and toured a dynamic show with three very different vocalists: Hank Mullen, Moe Jones and Carlena Weaver; they released two singles in the fall of 1970 on the homegrown/financed label. Through then manager, all around music hustler and Macon, Georgia native James Reese, the Avengers traveled to Capricorn Records Studio (Macon, GA) for a session in October of ’70. ‘He Upset Your Dreams’ & ‘Listen” were penned by two staff writers: Earl Simms & Alan Osborne for then Walden Artists and Productions, under the publishing Redwal Music. (Redwal was formed in 1965 by Otis Redding, Phil & Alan Walden. Earl Simms was first Otis Redding’s, later Arthur Conley’s road manager and wrote Conley’s 1968 hit, ‘Funky Street’.)
In the ‘70s the group toured the Midwest and the South as backing band for Eddie Floyd, Arthur Conley, Betty Wright and Betty Swan. Carlena additionally has a 45 on William Nunn’s MODO imprint and spent time working and singing for the Ikettes. Sadly, soon after the records release, Hank Mullen, then in his mid-twenties, died tragically due to a heart attack.

Sad News Eddie Singleton RIP

Ady C posted the below...

Andy Rix just passed on this sad news from Harry Bass.

Eddie had been living in South Africa for several years. He was most famous on our scene for his magnificent Shrine record label that created some of the most exciting, and beautiful soul music of the 1960s. Shrine has become a byword for top quality rare soul and is now spoken of in awe and affection.

I had the honour of releasing the first Shrine recordings in the UK in the mid 80s with two LPs and two singles on the Horace's label. Andy Rix researched and recorded for posterity the story of the Washington DC label that featured Ray Pollard, Eddie Daye, The Cautions, The Cairos, Shirley Edwards, The Prophets and JD Bryant among its releases. This detailed history was documented in the booklets to the two volumes of Kent CDs "Shrine: The Rarest Soul Label". The quality and rarity of the Shrine records combined to make the label a Northern Soul collector's Holy Grail.

Eddie had been a successful writer, producer and artist in the late 50s and early 60s working with Barbara Lewis, The Matadors and Marie Knight. He later wrote for Motown contributing 'Don't Bring Back Memories' for the Four Tops and composed the great Northern Soul classic 'The La Rue' for Lada Edmund Jr.

He married Berry Gordy's ex-wife Raynoma in the early 60s and she was a cornerstone of his Shrine operation being a very musically talented lady. Harry Bass was Eddie's right-hand man throughout most of his musical endeavours and contributed songs and business skills to the label.

In later years he was re-married Motown singer Barbara Randolph who pre-deceased him by about ten years. He was a warm talented man who was very happy that his commercially unsuccessful work at Shrine was eventually appreciated overseas.

You can read a length draft version of the Shrine Cd release notes from Andy Rix (poste d in 2001) in the soul words section on this site

EDDIE SINGLETON - THE EARLY YEARS
William Edward Singletary always knew he was going to be somebody in the music industry. His mother Mary, a gospel singer, actively encouraged Eddies musical abilities from an early age. He took his first tentative steps into the world of show business, from his home in Asbury Park, New Jersey, whilst still in his teens by organising concerts at the local army base. During this time he met many talented artists and subsequently felt that there was no reason why he could not join their ranks. A move to New York, in 1956, brought him into contact with Hy Weiss, the owner of Old Town records, and before too long a recording contract was signed. Eddie cut a few solo sides, that remain unreleased, and then moved on to Brunswick Records with a group he had assembled called The Chromatics. Their only release Too Late/My Heart Let Me Be Free (Brunswick 55080), issued in 58, enjoyed moderate sales and remains a collectors item for followers of that genre. The group did a number of shows and dates out of town but Eddie, who was by now composing his own material, decided that he didnt really enjoy being in the limelight as a performer feeling that his talents would be put to better use elsewhere. By 1959 Eddie had his own office at 1650 Broadway. Despite having been in New York for less than three years he had built up an impressive roster of associates and was well connected with all of the major players in the city; Eddie had finally found a home....

Sad news indeed

Update on this Saturdays 100 Club - 19 Jan 2008

Following on from my previous announcement that the Northern Soul night would have to finish at 3 am due to the club not having got its 6 am licence extension in on time. We have now got a nearby (easily walkable) club, to let our die-hards who need to keep on going, do exactly that. We'll be allowed to take over the decks too, so it could be quite a night. The club is small though so priority will be given to the long distance punters who can't get home until morning, but I think most of us will squeeze in.

In addition we have added Soul Source stalwart and top Hertfordshire soul boy Ian "Simsy" Sims to the bill which already had the glittering talent of Mick "El Gringo" Smith, Alan "Birthday Boy" Handscombe and Ady "Pass The Sprouts" Croasdell so it's gonna be Magic!

Admission is only £8, and will be reduced further to £5 after 12.30 am, memberships aren't needed, bring a friend or a very confused stranger.

Until then, I remain yours  dementedly
