Clarence Carter - New Kent CD Review

This Is Clarence Carter / The Dynamic Clarence Carter  And More - Kent CDKEND 444
Lovers of Southern Soul have been spoilt by Ace/Kent Records the last few years with the releases covering genre and in particular the World-renowned Recording Studio in Muscle Shoals, Fame. You have had to be lost in the deepest darkest Amazon not to have seen or heard these fantastic compilations.
The latest features the rich deep soulful voice of Clarence Carter and in particular his first two LPs that saw release on the Atlantic Label.  Also included are five bonus tracks.
Blind from birth Clarence took a huge interest in music, learning the guitar that was given to him by his grandmother and gaining a degree in music at Alabama State College.  He teamed up with fellow blind musician Calvin Scott and toured as a duo.  They had a couple of 45’s released under the name Calvin & Clarence and were soon signed up by Duke Records for five releases.
They then travelled to Fame where they self financed two singles that were leased to Atlantic but failed to sell.  Rick Hall obviously saw something in them and he soon had them recording demos but Calvin was shot by his wife and unable to record.  Hall was reluctant to record Carter as a solo act but Hall was eventually persuaded by Carter that he could cut it as a musician, a singer and a songwriter.
Clarence’s early efforts did make the R&B charts but he was soon struggling to make any impact.  Jerry Wexler suggested Clarence would fair better with the backing of the Atlantic label and as a result Clarence’s success rocketed.
The first LP, “This Is Clarence Carter” kicks off with Clarence’s take on “Do What You Gotta Do”, better known by most by The Four Tops but Clarence gives it the classic Southern feel on this version. “Looking For A Fox”, a top 20 hit on the R&B charts for Carter was next.  “Slippin’ Around” and “I’m Qualified”, better known by Art Freeman And Jimmy Hughes respectively followed.  Two compositions by Carter himself were next up, the Southern Soul ballad “I Can’t See Myself” and the R&B mover “Wind It Up”.  The Clay Hammond penned R&B Chart topper by Little Johnny Taylor “Part Time Love” was next followed by the self penned “Threads The Needle”, a song demoed earlier by Calvin And Carter upon arriving at Fame. The next track was actually the flip to the one that follow “Funky Fever” but it was “Slip Away” that found favour with the DJs up and down the country who turned the record in to a top ten Pop & R&B hit.  One of the flops on the Fame imprint for Carter “She Ain’t Gonna Do Right” was next up and to complete the album was the ballad “Set Me Free”.
The second Album, “The Dynamic Clarence Carter” although I’m not sure it is as dynamic as the title suggest when compared to the first but it still showcases some great Southern Soul and the talent not only of Carter but the musicians at the time at the Fame studios.  The disc kicks off with a cover of “I’d Rather Go Blind”, a hit for Etta James.  Don Covay’s “Think About It”, also recorded by Otis Redding sees Clarence pleading with his woman to “Think About It” before she walks out the door.  Carter’s own “The Road Of Love” is next, an excellent blues influenced recording.  “You Been A long Time Coming” sees Carter telling us just how long he has been waiting for love to come into his life.  More covers follow, a pretty good take of “Light My Fire (The Doors), “That Old Time Feeling” and Jimmy Hughes’s “Steal Away”.  “Let Me Comfort You” is classic Carter, pleading with another man’s woman to come to him to escape the treatment of her partner who is also a friend of Carter.  You can hear the influence of Country music in Carter’s work and none more so than “Look What I Got”.  Another Gold Disc for Carter and the top side of the single that featured “Look What I Got” on its flip is next, “Too Weak To Fight”.  Another cover “Harper Valley PTA” follows and to close the LP is “Weekend Love”.
To close the CD is five tracks taken from the session between 1966 and 1967 including early work by Calvin and Carter.  All in all, an essential purchase for lovers of Southern Soul.
As you would expect you have some great reading material whilst listening to the music this time the notes come courtesy of Dean Rudland.

Soul Junction New 45 - It's Okay With Me I Have a Masterplan

Soul Junctions collaboration with the late great Richard "Popcorn" Wylie continues with two sides that both saw release on two rare and in demand 45's.  The top side see's a current rave The Four Real Inc's "The Man (Masterplan)".  Ideal for todays funk flavoured scene both here and on the continent.  The flip see's the flip of Larry Wright's A-Go-Go release "It's Okay With Me".  The A-Go-Go top side "Sweet Sweet Kisses" has seen turntable action via various DJ's during the past as has the more mid tempo and soulful "It's Okay With Me".

Press Release: Four Real Inc   “The Man (Master Plan)”/ Larry Wright “ It’s Okay With Me”   SJ1004
Release Date:   Monday March 7th 2016
Four Real Inc’s “The Man (Master Plan)” (Flying Eagles 129) has become a desirable and popular 45 within the current European funk and rare soul scene due to its raw, funky but soulful appeal. This 1975 release was written and produced by Richard ‘Popcorn’ Wylie in collaboration with Therman Hollis of TMT productions (Tomorrows, Music, Today). The group was made up of some of the members of the former sixties outfit The Tempos who previously worked for the former Marquee boxer turned record label owner Diamond Jim Riley,  for whom they recording several excellent releases which appeared on his Diamond Jim and Riley’s logos respectively.

One of the aforementioned former Tempos was the late Buford ‘Fabb’ Glanton a session guitarist and the lead singer of Four Real Inc, who later recorded a further Flying Eagles/TMT production  “It Could Have Been You” under the pseudonym of David Lenyard And The Music Tree.  Fabb had previously worked as a session guitarist and arranger on several of Popcorn’s earlier Soul Hawk sessions on groups such as the Mighty Lovers and The new Holidays. The original flipside of “The Man” upon it’s U.S release was a song called “Ghetto Blues” an abbreviated title of a reworked song that Popcorn had previously recorded on the Jive Five (Featuring Eugene Pitt) entitled “Blues In The Ghetto” during the mid 60’s at Musicor Records.
Popcorn’s time at Musicor would see him heavily involved in the production team headed by veteran producer Luther Dixon that were given the task of reviving the fortunes of the 1950’s hit making group ‘The Platters”.  Recorded in the Motorcity, these sessions would feature some of Detroit’s finest musicians and songwriters and provide the Platters with a string of hit singles “I Love You A 1000 Times”, “Sweet, Sweet Lovin’”, as well as the Wylie and Hester penned classics “Washed Ashore (On A Lonely Island In The Sea)” and “With This Ring” (which also featured on their “Going Back To Detroit” album) all of which played their part in returning the Platters to their former glory.

So returning to the present and given this current demand for Four Real Inc we at Soul Junction records have decided to re- release “The Man (Master Plan)” but in doing so we have made the decision to drop the original b-side “Ghetto Blues” in favour of another of Popcorn’s more notable b-sides the highly desirable and delightfully soulful “It’s Okay With Me”. The flip to Larry Wright’s pounding Detroit dancer “Sweet, Sweet Kisses”, his solitary release for the A-Go-Go label.

Larry's A-Go-Go release that would appear to have once been owned by Richard "Gilly" Gilbert!

Spaceark 45 - Do What You Can Do /Don't Stop

We are delighted to offer our second release on the CratesOfSoul record label .
SPACEARK    - DO WHAT YOU CAN DO   /  DON’T STOP   ( CS002  ) RELEASE DATE  :  25TH  FEBRUARY 2016
We are delighted to offer our second release on the CratesOfSoul record label .
Once again a limited edition 7” vinyl of 200 units only.
Back in 1975 Spaceark recorded a obscure private press album from the streets of California.
The track : Do What You Can Do was one of the stand out tracks from the album .
The A side  :  ‘ Do What You Can Do  ‘ was cut back in 1975 and saw a release as a 45 on the eye catching home spun Color World label a year later in 1976. This has become a collectable 45 in the ensuing years .
Back in the halcyon days of the mid seventies this saw action as a new release spin in the Northern soul clubs of the United Kingdom . Gaining dancefloor acceptance at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens, Blackpool Mecca, The Ritz , and even garnering turntable activity @ Mr M’ s of the famous Wigan Casino .
Vibrant vocals over a nifty shuffling scintillating cocktail of funky grooves makes it easy to understand it’s acceptance at the aforementioned progressive arenas .
Mysteriously the track never rose to the pinnacle deserved . In the passage of time the 45 has become a sought after 45 across Europe commanding a £40 - £50 price tag . Lost in the sands of time we thought it was well overdue a renaissance.
The B side is a killer - no filler  ‘ Don’ t Stop ‘ featuring the lead vocals of Dolores Hardy screams for dancefloor potential in today’s acceptance of funky delicacies across Europe.
This one only saw an album release in recent years following a Japanese reissue on compact disc in 2011 courtesy of Creole Music .
The 45 was issued on two occasions , both equally obscure and sought after by collectors across Europe.
Firstly on Color World as Spaceark and then as Dolly Way And Space Ship Earth . Both obscure and the Color World 45 often fetching £60 plus . Recent sales through Discogs show the latter between £42 and £70 , and the other version never selling and wanted by 94 collectors.
So £9.99 plus postage gets you a double sider for a lot less than this !!
Buy it now or regret later  Ebay and Discogs love procrastinators....
Available direct from the label or check our record label page on Bandcamp where you get the digital  download in varying formats .

Tyrone Edwards aka Tony & Tyrone - The Story

Tyrone Edwards aka Tony & Tyrone
It took me many years to track down this guy, but eventually I was sitting with him on Detroit’s East Side. Over a ten year period I had been down several blind alleys looking for Tyrone Edwards and Tyrone Pickens, the name he wrote under. But his story starts as one half of the singing duet Tony & Tyrone, who built up a strong reputation around the Detroit city clubs as a lively stage act with undoubted singing skills. Early on they became close friends of Carolyn & Aretha Franklin, who help them whenever they could to develop their careers, Aretha even wrote a song for Tyrone at one stage. This eventually led to contracts with both Columbia and Atlantic through the connection to the sisters.

They put out one 45 on both, but their initial break came with two release on the local label Ston-Roc, ‘I may not have’ / A fool am I’. The A side is a rockin good R&B dancer, with the standard ballad flip, a good place to start, then a year later ‘Talking about people’ / ‘Don’t ever leave me’. By the time they arrived at Columbia, they had developed their act into a strong duet with perfect matched vocals, as demonstrated on the ballad A side ‘Crossroads’, on the flip they recorded a similar style soulful number called ‘A fool am I’.
For their third release came the humorous A side ‘Please operator’ which gained some success in the UK later in the 70’s, getting a release on the back of its popularity on the Northern Soul scene.
Somewhere in there also came a release on the UK label Ember in 1970 ‘Whip your loving on me’. Although these saw some success the duet then split up, but this was not the end for Tyrone. He had already proved his talent for singing and writing so was signed up by Brian and Eddie Holland for their newly formed Invictus label. Here he released one 45 ‘Can’t get enough of you’, a very typical Invictus sounding mid tempo number with the signature string arrangements, that also can be heard on Chairman Of The Board 45’s. The flip an oh so soulful stepper, this also saw releases around Europe on the Invictus inprint. But like so many excellent releases on the label, without the Holland Brother full focus the promotion was weak and it did little.

Tyrone was to have one last burst on creativity now having joined up with writing partner James Anderson. This lead to what would be his last release on James’s Olam label, the strutting funky late 70’s dancer ‘You did it’, backed by a pretty ballad ‘Main ingredient’, recorded at Danny Dallas’s Sound Patterns studio in North Detroit.

Over the years Tyrone’s life has taken many a twist and turn, living in many parts of the U.S. During this time he lost touch with his old buddy, Tony Johnson, but now he is home again in Detroit and back in touch with his later writing partner James and together they are working on some previously unissued material, which I hope to help them get released. In a final attempt to get some sucess on this 45 they took it to, the then No1 Detroit radio DJ, Foody. But instead of playing the 45 on his show, he took his group The Exportations into the studio and recorded it on them. Then in a last twist of fate, the radio station said that these 45's were a conflict of interest and he could play neither.
In the main cover photo Tony is on the left and Tyrone on the right, the link is to a Youtube post of Tyrone's last 45 on Olam

The Other Side Of The Trax - Stax Volt 45 rpm Rarities 1964-1968

Still catching up with the last few weeks releases, today the focus falls back on Kent with this Stax related most recent release.
The Other Side Of The Trax - Stax-Volt 45 rpm Rarities 1964-1968  CDTOP 442
This comp features 24 Stax/Volt b-side tracks from 1964-1968. The release notes (see link below) informs us that this is the first time out on cd for all the 24 and for most the first time seen the light of day since the initial single release back when. Source wise all it seems are from the original singles mono masters apart from Johnny Tailor's opener which is offered up here via a new stereo mix
Initial reaction appears to be strong with a fair few 5 star reviews being given on amazon already (see link below)

BBE Blurb
Scotland’s foremost (possibly only) disco obsessive returns with a fourth volume in the critically acclaimed Disco Love series. Previous volumes had critics saying things like “Some of it is risqué, cheesy and (may I say) sexy. Great stuff for us disco-geeks” and “A real gem for the disco connoisseurs” and “This will enhance any deep disco collection” and “the ever-reliable Glaswegian crate digger unearths even more dusty gems” and “Just when you think that Al Kent guy is not going to get you again, he assembles a third Disco Love that is more stimulating than the first two volumes” and, less excitingly, “The mastering and sound quality is great”.
So, just when you think that Al Kent guy isn’t going to get you again, here he is - with fifteen more obscure disco tracks (or at the very least soul records you could dance to), most of which were pressed in limited quantities before sinking without trace, including five very special edited and extended versions and a DJ mixed second CD

The first installment of Daptone Records' new video series, Live From The House Of Soul. Directed by Poull Brien and shot in the backyard of Daptone's House of Soul in Bushwick, Brooklyn, features Charles Bradley at his best with the Menahan Street Band.
Charles Bradley's voice has evolved from a lifetime of paying dues, having nomadically labored for decades at various day jobs from Maine to Alaska - singing and performing in his spare time - before re-settling in his hometown Brooklyn and eventually finding a musical home at Dunham.
In his distinctively rough-hewn timbre one hears the unmistakable voice of experience - each note and gruff inflection a reflection of his extended, sometimes rocky, personal path. It's only fitting that producer, Brenneck (also a member of The Dap-Kings and The Budos Band), would recognize in Bradley a kindred musical spirit - a singer whose performances exude both raw power and poignant beauty.

Cleethorpes 2016 - Maxine Brown Announced For The 2016 Weekender

Just announced the live artist for this years Cleethorpes Weekender...
The 6TS Rhythm ‘N’ Soul Society is pleased to announce that Maxine Brown will be our live US soul act for the Cleethorpes Northern & Rare Soul Weekender on June 10th-12th 2016.

Maxine needs no introduction to European soul fans; she is the only singer to have appeared more than once at our original Rare Soul weekender - the longest-running event of its kind. She was due to appear at the Crossfire weekender about four years ago but a serious illness, from what should have been a routine operation, meant she had to cancel and has taken some time to regain full health. That, she has done remarkably well, as I found when visiting New York last year with my grown-up family. Maxine serenaded us in song and with stories over a superb Italian meal.
She is still full of talent and fun and will win the hearts of the Cleethorpes crowd as she has so effectively in the past.

Unreleased Prison Soul from 1979 - Symphonical Records

Symphonical Records are open for business with our first release. Now Available!!
UPHEAVAL - 'COME ON WITH THE COME ON' / 'T.L.C' (Symphonical Records)
A double-sider comprising two previously unreleased tracks by the group 'Upheaval' which were recorded inside Waupun Correctional Institution.
The 9 piece Wisconsin outfit was formed whilst behind bars, cutting a series of live recordings over a few days in 1979. Several of the group members had no musical training before entering prison, however the band built up its reputation through concerts for inmates, the local public and radio.
Upheaval only had one release to their name, 'Paradise Lost' / 'Now That You're Gone', on their self-titled 'Love' label. Only 25 copies are thought to have been originally pressed, with even less surviving to the present day.
The two tracks on this 45 have not seen the light of day until now. They were recorded live using only 2 microphones and the only surviving 'masters' were in cassette form. Both sides are raw, powerful and soulful - a true upheaval from behind bars.

New Breed Workin' - Blues With A Rhythm - New Kent Cd

A information pass on news item on this just released album from Kent
New Breed Workin' - Blues With A Rhythm
CDKEND 443
Released : End of Jan 2016
Also available via mp3 format (see web link below)

Blurb
With a third of the tracks debuting here, this CD is aimed at R&B lovers looking for something new. We found a rich vein of New Orleans R&B in the AFO vaults. From that source we feature Nookie Boy’s 1962 release ‘I’ve Got A Feeling For You Baby’, Robbie Lee’s ‘Let Me Know’, which premiered on our “Gumbo Stew” CD series in the 90s, and Joan DuValle’s previously unissued ‘Lucky Girl’.
Chet “Poison” Ivey takes that Crescent City approach on ‘Now We Must Part’, a very scarce Gator 45. From the same Arock/Sylvia stable of New York come the nerve-tingling ‘Cruel World’ and a version of the Buddy Lucas-penned Drifters’ hit ‘Steamboat’, while previously unissued late 50s/early 60s blues busters by the little-known Pee Wee Foster, Cool Papa Jarvis and Big Charley & The Domans emanate from the world of Cleveland, Ohio indie blues labels. More master tape magic can be heard on Mary Johnson’s R&B dance classic ‘These Tears’, which comes with an added brass section and ...

Maurice White - RIP

Another genius passes away. Thanks for the memories - RIP Maurice

added by site
Born    December 19, 1941
Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.
Origin    Chicago, Illinois, U.S.
Died    February 4, 2016 (aged 74)
Los Angeles, California, U.S.
Maurice White was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1941 to a father who was a doctor and occasional saxophonist. He grew up in South Memphis, where he lived with his family in the Foote Homes Projects and was a childhood friend of Booker T Jones. In his teenage years, he moved to Chicago and found work as a session drummer for Chess Records. While at Chess, he played on the records of artists such as Etta James, Ramsey Lewis, Sonny Stitt, Muddy Waters, The Impressions, The Dells, Betty Everett, Sugar Pie DeSanto and Buddy Guy. White also played the drums on Fontella Bass's "Rescue Me" and Billy Stewart's "Summertime". In 1962, along with other studio musicians at Chess, he was a member of the Jazzmen which later became The Pharaohs.
By 1966, he joined the Ramsey Lewis Trio, replacing Isaac "Red" Holt as the drummer. Holt would go on to be a part of the Young-Holt Unlimited and bassist Eldee Young was also replaced by Cleveland Eaton. As a member of the Ramsey Lewis Trio, Maurice played on nine of the group's albums, including Wade in the Water (1966), from which the track "Hold It Right There" won a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental in 1966. Other albums by Lewis that featured White included The Movie Album (1966), Goin' Latin (1967), Dancing in the Street (1967), Up Pops Ramsey Lewis (1967) and The Piano Player (1969). While in the Trio he was introduced in a Chicago drum store to the African thumb piano or kalimba and on the Trio's 1969 album Another Voyage's track "Uhuru" was featured the first recording of Maurice playing the kalimba.
In 1969, Maurice left the Trio and joined his two friends, Wade Flemons and Don Whitehead, to form a songwriting team who wrote songs for commercials in the Chicago area. The three friends got a recording contract with Capitol Records and called themselves The Salty Peppers. They had a moderate hit in the Midwest area with their single "La La Time", but their second single, "Uh Huh Yeah", was not as successful. Maurice then migrated from Chicago to Los Angeles, and altered the name of the band to Earth, Wind & Fire, the band's new name reflecting the elements in White's astrological chart.
With Maurice as the bandleader and producer of most of the band's albums, EWF earned legendary status winning six Grammy Awards out of a staggering 14 nominations, an NAACP Hall of Fame Award, a star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame and four American Music Awards and the sale of over 90 million of the froup's albums worldwide. As a member of the band, Maurice was bestowed with such honors of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, The Songwriters Hall of Fame and The NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame.
Due to his diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease in the late 1980s, White stopped touring with Earth, Wind & Fire in 1994. However, he retained executive control of the band and was still very active in the music business, producing and recording with EWF and other artists.

Hayley Is Hot - 4 New Unreleased tracks on 45s

FOUR previously unreleased DEON JACKSON and JIMMY DELPHS tracks finally see the light of day.
Hayley Records is proud to the announce the second twin set of 7 inch records in the recent 'DETROIT DOUBLE' series that began with the fantastic TONY HESTOR and STEVE MANCHA previously unissued releases in 2015 – 'Nothing can stop me from loving you' and 'Girl have pity'
Now it's the turn of two of Detroit's most distinctive vocalists to deliver some truly stunning sides.

HR 019 DEON JACKSON 'Pain in my heart' b/w ' I've got so much love'
Both tracks were recorded at United Sound Systems in Detroit in 1967, under the supervision of Ollie McLaughlin who produced the session, and Andrew 'Mike' Terry, who arranged both songs. Deon's vocals have never sounded better and the superb accompaniment by members of the famed Funk Brothers including George McGregor on drums, Bob Babbitt on bass, guitarists Don Davis, Dennis Coffey and Ray Monette, Johnny Griffith on piano and Mike Terry's stand out baritone sax. The intro and hook line to 'Pain in my heart' resembles a slowed down version of 'Our love (is in the pocket') while 'Ive got so much love' is clearly aimed at the dance floor.

JIMMY DELPHS 'Where there is love' b/w 'Our last goodbye'

Again, both sides were recorded at United Sound, around 1967/68, with Ollie McLaughlin producing and Mike Terry providing the arrangements. The same group of musicians provided backing on both songs. Jimmy Delph's take on 'Where there is love' stands up equally to the version that has surfaced by the song's writer Sharon McMahan, but with much clearer sound quality. The flip 'Our last goodbye' uses Detroit Symphony to create an atmospheric opus worthy of many other classic Detroit recordings.

Deep Soul - Label Resurrected with Two New 45s

The end of the just gone month saw the first release from Ace Records timely resurrection of the 'Deep Soul' label.
The below quote lifted from the press blurb sums it all up quite well...
'The label will continue to champion deep soul sides, bringing them to the public’s attention and making them available to fans who may have missed their original issue.'

The first release sees a double header featuring tracks from Jaibi and The Hesitations
 1. You Got Me - Jaibi
  2. Gotta Find A Way - The Hesitations

‘You Got Me’ is by Larry Banks’ second wife Jaibi. Dave Godin included this on the very first “Deep Soul Treasures” comp and said the below of it...
'Without Jaibi’s magnificent recording ‘You Got Me’ my life would have been less, and certainly she will always have a special place in my heart and memory because of it'
This track is the same version as the 45 but with added, very subtle, female backing vocals.

The flip has the vinyl debut of the Hesitations’ sublime vocal group sound ‘Gotta Find A Way’
Can listen to both sides Deep Soul 01 below
 1. You Got Me - Jaibi

  2. Gotta Find A Way -The Hesitations
Your browser does not support the audio element listen via click here

Also as part of the launch and now out and about is the second 'Deep Soul' 45 release again featuring stand up tracks from two artists
  1. Deep Shadows - Little Ann
  2. Stay Away - The Turn Arounds

Deep Shadows by Little Ann is an unissued Dave Hamilton produced master from Detroit which was recorded around 1967.
It has grown steadily in the rare soul public's esteem ever since its CD debut in 1998. It has been covered by new bands and features in a very atmospheric Jordan trainers internet ad in the USA.
Kent have only just discovered that the magnificent 1966-recorded ballad Stay Away was by Los Angeles vocal group the Turn Arounds. It was recorded in Atlanta but has the feel of a classic mid 60s Chess-recorded ballad; no doubt exactly what the group was trying to achieve at the time.

Can listen to both sides of Deep Soul 02 here

BBC would like your help

Calling all Northern Soul fans, the BBC would love to hear from you.

BBC Music is crowdsourcing fans’ memories and archives from over 50 years of British rock, pop and Soul music for a new series to be broadcast on BBC Four called ‘The People’s History of Pop’.

We’d love to hear from fans who followed the scene when Northern Soul first flourished in Britain back in the 70’s. Do you remember hearing your first record? Did you go to Clubs,  all-nighters at The Wheel, The Torch, Va Va's, Cats, Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca, Cleethorpes, Samantha's? What about venue membership cards - have you kept yours?

If you’ve been inspired by the sounds of Northern Soul and still have memorabilia in your attic, under your bed or in the recesses of your computer, please dig it out and go to http://www.phop.co.uk to take part or email phop@7wonder.co.uk

Mighty Bub's Memorial trophy

Your help is needed
If you have ever attended the fantastic Cleethorpes 6T's Soul weekender run by Ady Croasdell, you will be well aware that the madness on Sunday night includes the DJ Dance competition, where DJ's who should know better, are rounded up to perform in a ritual of humiliation that is most commonly known as musical chairs.
The winner of this event since 1999 has been awarded the Mighty Bub's Memorial trophy.
This was meant to be engraved each year with the winners name and returned for the next years shenanigans.
The Trophy went missing in Europe somewhere in 2008 and was only returned last Year in 2015, this means that we have quite a few names to fill the gaps.
As I won it last year (and quite a few others) I feel that I should get this up to date and returned to Ady ready for the 2016 weekender 10th - 12th June
Can you help with missing names please.
1999 - Wakey & Ady
2000 - Dave Rimmer
2001 - Roger Banks
2005 - Niamh Lynch
2006 - Andy B B
2007 - Keith Money
2008 - ?
2009 - ?
2010 - ?
2011 -?
2012 - ?
2013 - Andy Newman
2014 - Eddie Hubbard (I think)
2015 - Andy Newman
Many thanks for your help

Soul Boys Raising Money for Motor Neurone Disease.

In April 2015 our very good friend Paul Thrower was diagnosed with MND. This is a particularly random illness which strikes without warning and for no real reason. As you'll remember the ice bucket challenges have dramatically raised awareness, but there still needs to be far more research into how & why this disease works.Paul is facing this disease with great humour & bravery in his usual pant swinging & retro sock style, which we all know is part of his character!
On the 12th Dec 2015 whilst having a few pints at "Seriously Soulful" in Bristol, John Pearson, Chris Anderton & Dave Lucas had the brilliant idea of cycling for MND awareness from Dab of Soul Nantwich to Seriously Soulful Bristol. The event will be over 2 days (13th-14th May 2016) covering 140 miles. Chris Anderton, Ian Bulloch, Dave Lucas, Steve McColgan, John Pearson, Jack Phillips, Kev Rodgers, Steve Wagstaff & Phil Wainwright are the Soulful lycra clad participants.
To promote further awareness & research we very much appreciate your donations through JustGiving, by doing this you are potentially saving someone's life in the future. All the team would like to thank you so much for every penny donated for a Dab of Seriously Soulful Money for MND Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
You can donate safely by following this link to the "Just Giving" page:

Soulful Kinda Music Website

Following a period of very little activity over the last five years I've finally bought a second PC for the house in Wales. So, now I have access to the net on a regular basis my intention is to move forward with the Soulful Kinda Music site
It's my intention to add at least one new artist discography, or one label listing every single day through 2016. This will mean that I'll end the year with over 2,000 discographies on the site, and keep SKM up there as the premier site for Soul music discographies.
So far, I'm spot on with that target, it's the 16th January, and I've added 16 discographies so far this year.
I've also started to work my way through all the updates that people have sent me over the last year, and 18 pages have had additions or corrections so far this year. The CD / Book / Record reviews page is due to make a comeback as well, and there are plans for quite a few eniterly new features over the course of the year.
Finally, I'd like to say thanks to all the people who have contributed in the past, and ask that if anyone does have something, an artist discography, a label listing, and addition to an existing page, or even a correction, please get in touch.
