Motown Legends Weekender 2004 Thanks and dates for 2005

Grab of news/thanks from the Motown Legends Website on recent Motown Legends Weekender The Motown Legends Weekender took place at the Hemsby Holiday Centre at GREAT YARMOUTH during the weekend 29th October - 1st November (Friday to Monday) 2004 "One big party at Pontins with our Motown Legends Weekend. Top line artistes, top DJs and late bars." is how it was billed and would say its fair to say that it lived up to that 14th to 17th October 2005 are the dates for your calendar for next years event! MOTOWN LEGENDS SOUL WEEKENDER 2004 The organisers and staff at Pontins, Hemsby, Great Yarmouth would like to say a big thank you to all the people who made last weekends event such an overwhelming success. We had FIVE stunning performances over the 3 nights of the weekend. Miracles member Tee Turner got the crowd going with his opening set on Friday evening he should have sung "Sharp dressed man" ! and what a voice this guy has, watch out for his solo CD release. The Velvelettes were "really saying something" with their set on Friday evening getting the crowd of 1,300 people dancing and swaying to their classic Motown tune's. UK Motown had released their new compilation CD to coincide with their UK visit. Well worth checking out. The Miracles were absolutely superb on the Saturday evening and with Sidney taking Smokey Robinson's lead vocal part if you closed your eyes you were taken back 30 or 40 years to the Heyday of Motown's golden era. Tee, Dave and original member bobby Rogers kept the audience spell bound after they sang hit after hit. Again immaculately dressed and moving on the stage in harmony a truly wonderful performance. On to Sunday night and Special guest original Crystals member Lala Brooks joined with our main man Richie Pitts to sing an outstanding set of classic soul tunes. For me the outstanding "Show and tell" and duet with Lala on "Back together again" were show stoppers. A radio show for BBC Radio 2 was recorded live in the Queen Vic by broadcaster Bob McClure "The Lost&Found show" , we will let you know when that is going to be on air, All in all a great weekend, we are coming back to great Yarmouth in 2005 over the weekend of 14th to 17th October and you can reserve your place's now either by booking on line at www.pontins.com or telephone 0870 604 5606 from http://www.soul-weekenders.co.uk

Valerie Simpson - The Collection (CD release)

Motown owes much to Valerie Simpson. In the late 60s, she and husband Nickolas Ashford penned "Aint No Mountain High Enough" and other glorious classics that turned Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell into pops most beautiful double act. They went on to achieve greater distinction for a series of excellent compositions, often in partnership with "Joshie" Jo Armstead. Among the many artists to record the teams songs were Ray Charles, Maxine Brown and Chuck Jackson and the solo Diana Ross. So this raft of Simpsons own recordings - combining her 1971 debut album on Tamla, Exposed, with 1972s follow-up, Valerie Simpson - makes for fascinating, uplifting listening. Gospel-infused soul prevails, especially on the opener, "I Dont Need No Help". Its a cappella intro sounds like a cry of freedom from the 25-year-old, already pigeonholed by Motown solely as a writer. Sweet melodies, tender lyrics and a beautiful climax sign this as one of the albums eighteen Ashford and Simpson compositions. The two went on to cast the 1984 floor-filler "Solid", and that tracks slick sound is foretold in The Collections shimmering production. Simpsons voice isnt up there with say Aretha or Brenda but its still authentically musical and demands to be heard. For the Bronx-born singer, love conquers all: on slowies like "Back To Nowhere" and "World Without Sunlight", Simpson adores her man. On "There Is A God" and others, she lauds the Lord. Ballads and mid-tempo arrangements are order of the day, but there are also uptempo tracks. "Sinner Man "is a Tamla tornado of sitars, trumpets, bongos and guitars. A cover of "We Can Work It Out" has a slow-blues opening, a trippy mid-section and a brass-fuelled finale. "Drink The Wine" is an irresistible force, evoking primetime Gladys Knight and The Pips. Motowns house band, the Funk Brothers, provides a perfect pulse here and throughout. ------------------------------------ Valerie Simpsons "The Collection" on Universal is out now in the US (available on Import through www.amazon.com)

Etta still has it goin' on

Etta still has it goin’ on

Etta James may be 66 years old. Her two sons who tour in her Roots band may boss her around some, and she may mix a few more ballads into her show than she did in her wilder youth. However, the reigning empress of rhythm and blues has still got it goin on. James brings a voice more powerful than whole horn sections, a musical command honed by 60 years in the business, and an attitude guaranteed to make the uninitiated blush. With that length of service, plenty of performers would be content to let their classic records do their work, but James is still busy touring and recording.

Etta, born Jamesette Hawkins in 1938, began performing with a church choir as a child in Los Angeles, and was discovered when she was 14 by band leader Johnny Otis. Her first recording in 1955 was a reply to Hank Ballard & the Midnighters’ “Annie” but "Roll With Me Henry" was considered too suggestive and re-titled "The Wallflower." By 1960 she had signed with Chess Records in Chicago. James took her inspiration from powerful male vocalists - John "Guitar" Watson and Ray Charles. As a child she had a male vocal teacher. "He said, `You might be little but you got to push those words you sing, not from your throat but from your stomach, " she said. She followed that advice and her powerful voice has carried her through a prolific musical career that included a string of hits that made the R&B Top 10 in the 1960s and crossed over to the pop charts as well. Despite hard times, including a battle with heroin addiction, James continued recording and performing for the next three decades.

She has been honoured with 12 W.C. Handy awards, the top honour of the blues music industry, and two Grammys, one for lifetime achievement bestowed in 2003. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. But her soulful ballads that raced up the charts in the 60s - "At Last," "All I Could Do Was Cry," "Dont Cry Baby" - only reveal a corner of James talent. Let loose, she gets a groove going that will drag you out of your seat, whether shes covering the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic "Born on the Bayou" or breathing fresh life into the Rolling Stones "Miss You." Her most recent album "Blues to the Bone" reaches way back to blues classics from John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed and Robert Johnson. However, James took some heat when she chose to record “gutbucket songs” such as "Driving Wheel," "You Shook Me" and "Crawling Kingsnake." In response, she said - "I always wanted to do those songs, and Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton really turned on the motor and brought the blues back," she said.

Martin Scorseses recent PBS documentary on the blues also inspired her, she said. Musically, James has never been afraid to roam. Shes tackled jazz standards. She nailed hip-hop with "Get Funky" on her "Stickin to My Guns" album. She even makes Bob Dylan groove, recording "You Gotta Serve Somebody" on her "Matriarch of the Blues" CD. Currently, James is working on a new album whose working title is "Lush Life," a song made famous by Nat King Cole. More info at: www.etta-james.com

Georgia Soul - Overflowing with ......

Georgia R&B and Soul Records
This site has been up in the Reference Section Soul Source links section for a fair while nowand at the time was a worthy addition as was impressed by the amount of info and the way it was delivered. Unfortunately with the amount of quality soul related web sites it means that sometimes there is just not enough hours in a day to get round all the quality ones regularly. Often its not till something specfic actually drags you to the site (in this case the "delphi" label listing ) that you catch up with fresh content and are reminded what a worthwhile site it is All listings are easily navigated, one click away from the home page index, plus other content such as an lengthy article by Brian Proust, a label gallery which contains over 100 plus scans, a review section featuring reviews of related cds, other soul website links and more
A main requirement of any worthwhile site is that it is updated regular, and in this case it is and its very regular almost weekly, all the update details are listed, as well, so if a regular visitor you can get to the fresh meat quick and easy. The only minor criticism (and I stress the word minor) is the use of anti-right mouse click script ( cant really see the point of this nowadays, in old days it may have protected content, but nowadays doesnt really do much protecting and does affect the user friendly feel of site. Get rid would be my shout)
Final view: It was a worthy entry in the weblinks reference section on Soul Source here, and now its a .... updated worthy entry! Check it out recommended!
site trivia: Always after news of fresh or updated similar sites such as this and sure so are many other soul fans, so any pas ons of info be more than welcome

Plinston Nov 5th Event Overview

Still recovering from another blinding night at North Herts Number 1 Rare Soul venue and what a night it was!

Considering that we were expecting only around 100 in, due to it being Bonfire night and the Hembsy Rally being on, we were more than pleased to welcome 260 through the doors.
All of whom were up for dancing from the start. The night was, in the opinion of many that I spoke to on the night and who have phoned and emailed me since, one of the best yet (so if you werent there you missed a belting one!)

The atmosphere was electric, the people great and the music outstanding with the across-the-board policy working well to get even the most sore feet grooving.Guests Sean Chapman and Dave Halsall did fantastic sets in The Ghetto! and Sean also in the Main Hall where a sea of dancers greeted his every selection. It says something for Sean when he managed to keep the loyal Ghetto Crew upstair with him whilst Soul Sam was ripping up the dance floor in the Main Hall. (I am sure Sean will post his own comments on the night here when he gets back from Italy!)

Mr Halsall surprised many with an excellent selection of the great and the good in Modern Soul and has earned a deserved return trip to what many consider one of the best modern rooms in the South.Needless to say Taffy, Nathan and Soul Sam delivered their usual quality sets which saw, as always, The Ghetto! grooving as only they can. DArcy in particular was a very happy and VERY sweaty man by the close :-)In the Main Hall the atmosphere was buzzing and again an across the board policy of oldies, newies etc went down well with the Soulful and the dancefloor groaned under the weight of slipping and sliding leather soled feet. Fingers and Hammie were greeted with the usual warm embrace by the Plinston regulars, Soul Sam (making another venture into the main room from The Ghetto!) played one of the best sets he has done, according to many, and as stated Sean Chapman really brought the house down, even despite his dubious dancing and obviously doddgy T-shirt choice!!!!! I finished the last hour with a mix of classic oldies, quality 70s and a few sixties newies and ending the night with Im On My Way to a handclapping acomplment from those still with enough energy to so so.

The Mojo Room saw busy action all night and I last got a chance to spin my R&B selection in there to an apprecitive crowd. At this rate we may even convert Soul Sam...or maybe not :-)))))In short, a great night and roll on January 14th with Ginger, Mischief and Dave Flemming guesting...be there or miss out on one of the Souths best nights!
TheBigO

* So many fun things to report but will just note a few here:

Soul Sam in a red stetson hat at the end in The Ghetto! spinning The Whole Damm Worlds Going Crazy and dedicating it to the Us election; Sean Chapman mincing, that is the only word we can use, all night to the Toons, Taffy standing with a handbag outside the Ladies trying to look OK with it; the girls outside having a cigarette and trying not to look like naughty schoolkids; Tim Brown getting really p***ed off at the number of people telling him that the rare Constelations track he reviewed was an old Plinston spin; myself and Sean being caught in some very dubious poses (see photos elsewhere)...the list is endless so feel free to add

Sad news Ray Charles

Posted up originally in forum by Supercorsa
Just seen on BT homepage that Ray Charles has passed away. Another Legend leaves us.

Music icon Ray Charles dies

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ray Charles, who overcame childhood poverty, blindness and heroin addiction to help create soul music and become one of Americas most beloved singers, has died at the age of 73 after a long fight with liver disease, his spokesman says.
Charles died at 11:35 a.m. on Thursday at his Beverly Hills home, the singers longtime publicist Jerry Digney said. Family members and co-workers of the legendary entertainer were with him when he died.
In one of his last public appearances, the singer-songwriter turned up in a motorised wheelchair for a ceremony in April conferring historic-building status on his longtime recording complex in a rundown part of Los Angeles.
Visibly frail, his voice reduced to a whisper, Charles demeanour then was a far cry from the wildly enthusiastic performer known to millions of fans for more than half a century.
A prolific musician, Charles has been off the road for almost a year so that he could undergo a hip replacement. Unspecified complications forced him to scrap plans to resume touring with a performance in New York last month.
Charles, a pioneer of soul music whose biggest hits include "Georgia on My Mind" and "Hit the Road Jack", was a multiple Grammy winner who had been blind since the age of 6.
While known as "The Genius of Soul", Charles music included standards, R&B, country pop and jazz.

More Internet Soul related thievery

Yet again another story concerning people who just dont give a **** for anyone else.
Many people will be aware that there are several soul fans, who go round photographing going ons at soul events. These photgraphers often put in a lot of time and effort taking these photos, and of course there are all the expenses of doing this such as travel etc that has to be covered.
Obvisouly many soul fans are interested in seeing these photos so many authors do allow them to be diplayed via web sites free of charge. And sure that many appreciate this and are grateful to then for allowing this to happen

Now should be no problem with any of the above, yeah? Well there is actually, had word that yet again someone is more than happy to rip off other soul fans. work, time and effort. It seems that photos put on public display by one of the best known scene photographers Dave Leedham are being downloaded, printed off, then laminated and sold on to soul fans.
Now while copyright law can be a bit grey on subject of images and selling on, but surely no one can think that they had any right o do this. The authors of these photois are often well known and respected and part of todays soul scene.

For someone to then come along , download them, print them out, laminate and then sell them on is yet another example of just what w******s are out there.
Crap like this is just taking the **** and is pure thievery.
if on web or out and about do spot likes of this going on please pass on details

On This Day - A post by Karen

Today it is a year since Randy Cozens died. Im sure a lot of people will be thinking of him, especially with Soulgate coming up.

Its a v.sad day. Ive had many comments over the year saying how much he is missed, how things dont seem the same without him, and how much he was admired and also many from people not realising how much he did for our scene. HOW TRUE.

I would personally like to say a big thanks to many for being there for me - I think they all know who they are - if I list them - be a long list! Without them I dont know where Id be. Even if you werent fortunate enough to know Randy or have only heard of him, Soulgate will show you what sort of person he was. I remember telling him how some thought of him as their hero - he looked bemused and just said wish I was your hero! Of course he was! But he was a hero to so many others too. He might be gone from here, but he is certainly not forgotten and never will be - as so many of us will keep his memory alive.
Randy - still missing you, Karen B x

Syreeta Wright RIP

Syreeta Wright, the former wife and collaborator of Stevie Wonder, has died at the age of 58 after a long battle with cancer.
Syreeta was a recording artist for Motown Records. She started at Motown as a secretary before producers Ashford & Simpson put her in the studio. At one stage, she was considered for the job of lead singer of The Supremes, replacing Diana Ross who had gone solo. Syreetas biggest hit was With You Im Born Again with Billy Preston in 1980
Over the years she had sung on many albums including Michael Boltons Soul Provider, Billy Prestons Its My Pleasure and Quincy Jones Back On The Block. With Stevie Wonder, she was heard on his Fullfillingness First Finale (1974), Songs In The Key of Life (1976), Hotter Than July (1980), In Square Circle (1985), Jungle Fever (1991) and Conversation Peace (1995). July Newletter part 3- All things dmsc

July Newsletter part 3 -day after

Here we go, another view on dmsc going ons, first thanks to all who showed last Friday at the Springfield. All feedback from main room was it was a good one.

friday 09 July 2004 - Natural born Monkey

This event marked the two year point of DMSC, as such were hoping for a cracking nite with best of last two years. however think fair to say while main room was up to usual standard sound wise and as always at the end of the night had the usual feedback, overall this didnt happen.

Turning up at springfield led us to the first (and not the last problem of the nite) someone had eaten half the dancefloor, turns out a overnite leak had caused damage to a third of the floor, which had been covered with carpet. With a bit of "changing rooms" carpet moving action, did manage to reclaim a bit more of the floor but was fair bit reduced. Unavoidable and apoligies go out.

main room

Onto main room, numbers down a fair bit, clashes with other events, the fact it was on a friday, reasons perhaps. Due to amount of events now at stage where avoiding any clash with similar or close by events is impossible. Such is life, as we feel we are the only ones in this part of the world offering what we do, have to just shrug and crack on

Dj wise, running order went like this - Steve T/Mike h, Mark Speakman, Keith Williams, Andy Killick, Robbo, Steve T - had a extra hour compared to last one due to later circunstances, and as the nite finished had the normal feedback from both regulars and new discoverers. Thanks to all guests

Playlists hopefully should follow, thanks to all djs -
usual "all over the place mode" dealing with going ons (see below) so unfortuantely missed a fair bit,
Mark Keith and Andy have said will send playlists so just a few odd hazy memoreies , George Jackson - I dont have.. , Utopias, Parasians - Twinkle little star, Rees Flores -Tell It to My heart, being just 4 quick ones, never realised that Andy Killicks Lou Pride cover was one Shifty used to play till Nick told us

all era room

The normal line up less Phil Blacknel who couldnt make it, Pete Bangor, Chico were joined by Steve t, after the last one were hoping numbers would approve. Unfortunately due to the low numbers the hotel requested that we close early

as said apoligies to nite on all those who attended for this room, and all the djs, explained reasons and the run up to it on the nite,

final view , due to a email recieved felt a need to bash out the full story - apoligies if of no interest or too dep but due to email thought needed to put it down

At 1000 the management of the hotel asked me to close the second room, I asked them why and they said, due to the hotel being so busy they had to use the second room for breakfast the next day and thus had to set it up. They had staff waiting to set it up. Due to the numbers using the second room, and fact they had staff waiting for the sole purpose of setting up the second room, in order to save paying staff up to 1am they were asking if possible to close it. I wasnt happy about this after discussion we agreed to look at situation again at 1030.

At 1030 the numbers hadnt improved, I suggested various work arounds which included us setting it up, however none were viable.I asked the views of co-promoter Steve T, the djs from the all era room, I then made the decision to close it as requested by the hotel management.

Understand that there were people not happy about this and all who complained were offered their money back. While this was far from ideal and not happy with it myself one bit, it was felt this decision was best for the event. I could have said "no way", however felt that this would have damaged the good working relationship we had with the hotel and damaged the event and could have led to us no longer using this venue. In past a flexiable approach has worked both ways and while the second room future is now being decided, if had insisted it stayed open am sure that in future it would no longer have been available to us. It was far from ideal espically after time and effort the djs put in.

Thats what and how it occured, far from ideal and am first to admit it however hopefully even if you do not agree with decision on this matter, by reading this are at least aware of the facts and my thinking behind the decision.

crowd and laughs

somehow learnt how to differate between a authentic 60s denim jacket and a replica

digital camera was took out of retirement and failed to work

Crowd wise, good as alwasy to meet up with many regulars, Nick G won the "Nick brown" "Out of the blue" award, was good to catch up with member 001, Graham and Liz deserve a mention, as first time to say thanks to both for recent hospitality. Nods to all rest, and thanks for showing up. Also good to see fair few fresh faces and hear their feedback

Final View

As always thanks to all djs - always check that they all enjoyed doing it and all did, and great feedback on all spots

half a dancefloor gone missing, overnight leaking roof, numbers down, major problems with all era room, clashes with events, occcurances jacking me off before hand.........
and still despite all this at end of nite had the now usual feedback,
(and as far as i was concerned) still went home with that monkey glow, after two years it onwards and upwards

Saturday 04 Sep is the next one - 100% booked
details soonest

transport will be sorted out if there is a demand for back and forth to keele niter

Future of Monkey

simple as far as am concerned back to the old **** off attitude.

dj bookings - in past we had two top class regulars Andy Rix and Rob Thomas - due to Andy Rix taking a break from dj-ing this had to change -

our policy is 3 main spots

- 1 top guest/monkey dj,

- 1 rotating regular Andy Killick or Ritchie Andrew,

- 1 monkey dj member spot

and myself and Steve and others filling in gaps

we are compling a list of long term future monkey djs and future dates

in past we had likes of Carl Willingham, Mick H, Bob Hinsley,Jumping Joan, Chic, Chico, Mark Speakman, Kev Spittle, Robbo, Colin Wood, Anne A, Ritchie Andrew, Keith Williams Andy Killick, Johnny Jones, Steve Jenks
all have walked thru door as punters and of course havent forgot that there are even more djs in the regular crowd and hopefully be getting chace to hear them soon

Along with guests such as
Keith Money, Ion, John Weston, Andy Dyson, Dave Rimmer, Dave Thorley, Brian Ellis,

(apoligies if missed anyone its getting late)

and then throw in the policy of quailty rare soul, we like to think are offering a selection and variety of djs and quality rare soul that is unmatched round this part of the world. This is simply what we are going to continue...

4th Rare Soul Weekender Rhyl
Flyers out for this one and a lot of interest, full details here along with booking form recently added in news section at www.soul-source.co.uk

Anthony [Tony] Renfro is the sort of bloke you just cant help liking. This 66 year old label owner still comes across as a naÃÆ’¯ve innocent who has just left home and wants to know more about the world. Im sure that his - always polite but curious - attitude was how he got to learn so much about the record industry that so enthrals him. Once he realised his natural charm opened doors for him, Ive a feeling he played upon it mercilessly.

Shirleys review of monkey-23 August 03

DMSC - 23RD August 03

Final Bank Holiday weekend of a hot, hot Summer. Col & I had
decided to go to The Drunken Monkey Soul Club extravaganza. So we
reserved a room at the Springfield Hotel in Wales and booked our train
tickets to Wales in good time to take advantage of the cheaper fares.
Of course the weekend of the Monkey was also the last Bank Holiday
weekend of the summer so it goes without saying that our soulful soiree
was not going to be totally uneventful. Sure enough Rail Track
announced plans for essential repair work to be carried out at least
inconvenience to them, oops sorry I mean the fare paying passenger. No
matter we would make our way there come hell or high water. As it
turned out we didn’t have to confront either hell (though it felt hot
enough) or high water.

On arrival in Flint we took a taxi to the
Springfield Hotel, our driver turned out not to be Welsh but an “Essex”
girl who many years ago, came for the summer season, met and married a
local boy and put down roots blah blah blah, oh no we’d got a “talker”
(this is an essential taxi driver job requirement, without it you’re
just a chauffeur;-))))) and then on coming across a “build up of
traffic” (two cars were waiting at the red traffic lights) she decided
to take an alternate route, now call me a cynic, (those who already
know me call me other things as well ;-))))) but do others always feel
as though they’re going to pay more than the locals would when in a
taxi in a strange town) we learnt about her many grandchildren, her
favourite drinking spot and how the Springfield Hotel was pricey, well
it would be compared to the social club she had already pointed out to
us as her local (seemingly most of her in-laws were on the committee)
the Springfield used to put on well known “live artistes” such as “that
bloke from Stars in Your Eyes” Finally the Springfield was there in
front of us, reluctantly I got out as by now I felt I’d made a new
friend, I almost felt like exchanging phone numbers so we could keep up
with all the “goss”. We paid the (reasonable as it turned out) fare and
bid each other a pleasant Saturday evening.

Well I don’t know how Tracy
the taxi’s (well we were in Wales) evening went but I know from past
experience that we were more than guaranteed a more than pleasant
evening with the DMSC boys & girls. Mike Hughes and Steve Thomas
were as usual setting up with the help of the sound boys Ed & Dave.
Andy Rix & Rob Thomas weren’t doing their regular spot tonight, on
their jollies I think, so the DJ line up was Chic, Steve Thomas, Robbo,
& Mike Hughes. Mick H also did a set although I hadn’t realised he
was one of the guest DJ’s, Col previously mentioned Mick was on his
jollies so it was a more than pleasant surprise when he showed up
almost straight from the airport to his spot in fact just re-reading
his playlist now I would say that for me it was an unexpected bonus, as
Mick played a few “new to me” toons. No-one played anything other than
excellent, something for everyone spots. The dancefloor soon became
somewhere to claim your territory, which was hard work for me as I was
trying to keep track (no pun intended) of each DJ’s sets plus I wanted
to strut my funky stuff down there on that dancefloor, but the good
stuff just kept on coming, stuff like Moses Smith, The Tropics, Ritchie
Adams, Duke Browner, Bill Bush, The Volumes, Isonics, Houston Outlaws,
The Appointments, The Nurons (can you see my dilemma now?) When I did
decide to take a breather from dancing and write down a few of the
toons , well you all know what it’s like, it took me a while to
remember what the last play was let alone the fifth one back. Next time
I’ll take my pen & pad to the dancefloor, of course this would only
really useful if you can multi-task, as I’m a girlie that shouldn’t be
a problem, all I need now is full and complete knowledge of all the
records any soul DJ is ever likely to play and I’ve cracked it ;-)))))

Considering how many other soul nights and all-nighters were on this
weekend there was a good size crowd
in, some of whom were non soulies from the wedding reception being held
in another room in the hotel. The “wedding” room was why there was no
second DMSC room tonight. This normally being the place to hear
funk/modern/r’n’b/progressive/connoisseurs…….., in other words anything
that is usually played in the “other” room of a two roomed venue ;-))))
Anyway these curious non-soulies popped in liked what they heard and
stayed – always a good sign. Turned out they were really up for it, -
hey didn’t this KFC/Northern stuff sound even better played out at full
belt, their obvious pleasure in the unfamiliar music was unmistakeable.
I love seeing “mainstream” music folks inspired by what they hear, it
always reminds me of how I felt the first time I went to a full on
Northern soul night only six short years ago. By whatever means
Northern soul comes to you, whether it was in the dim and distant past
of your local youth club, via family and/or friends, maybe it was more
recently at a local retro “Tamla – youth club -” soul night or as seems
more likely nowadays through TV ads, if you like what you hear you’ll
sure as hell be back for more. I for one am always encouraged if
someone is so knocked out by the music, they keep coming back for more.
Always room for one more passionate newcomer to swell the Northern Soul
ranks. ;-)))

All in all an absolutely spanking night for the monkey
boys and girls. A big thank you to Mike, his (tolerant) wife, and Steve
for making us feel so welcome. Thanks to the DJ’s for playing some damn
fine music If you haven’t been here before do yourself a favour, make
the effort, don’t take my word for it just check out the following
playlist. First an apology by way of explanation for any cock-ups in
the following playlist, it took me an age to decipher what I had
scrawled down and even then there’s been quite a lot of guess work
involved in the interpretation, so I just hope I haven’t made too many
blunders. Where you see “?/Guess–help needed” means I’m taking a guess
at a toon I don’t know but if anyone else does I sure as hell would
like for you to share that knowledge ;-))) Any glaring errors do feel
free to titter ;-))))

Soulfully yours
Shirley

Many thanks Shirley for passing on review, as all her stuff a great
read, both informative and enjoyable!
saw the qs, and just thought add odd thing or two (mainly to prevent
Johnny j on me back)
Johnny J from Bangors Soul At Social did the first hour. Had to mention
as had enough banter when he found out wasnt on flyers!
jr walker track on about was King Cutis - Footpaddin (part 2)
Think it was Mick H was billed not that bloody mike h, we usually dont
bill any of the dmsc team, as we just fill in gaps at front and end ,
unless as in this case Stevie T who was doing a main hour so was
billed.
Other plays thrown out on nite not listed think are in other post on
soul source site, but as think only obvious mistake spotted was giving
c going girl its stafford cover name rather than - derc hotzog, gotta
say very impressive skills.

St Ives Review 16 Oct Review by Winston

Seems a fair bit since read a review from Winston , but as just passed on his look back to last nites St Ives reunion, looks like back in action.
Published Date: 2004/10/22 3:10:00
St Ives 16th October
When H.G. Wells penned "The Time Machine", one assumes, he envisaged mad scientists working frantically to create a mechanism capable of traversing the very portals of time. A lot of work, and in reality on something that could never exist! Or could it?
If he'd have looked closely at the psyche of the human being, he would have discovered that all the tools he needed were in place, within. Walking into St Ives tonight was akin to stepping back to an era long forgotten. Of course the mullets and afros (disregarding my own, which is rapidly approaching Phil Lynott proportions) 😃 weren't very much in evidence. Nor thankfully were the white socks or tank tops, but sports bags and talc abounded, and of course the odd pair of Spencers with obligatory beer towel surfaced without apology.
The venue actually has a no talc policy, but apparently half the 700/800 had watched the film "The Wooden Horse", and  consequently those with 'roomier' Spencers were detailed to liberally disperse talc from secret compartments. I really wish the 'Northern Soul Bible', and its fourth commandment "Thou shalt fuck the floor by making it impossible to stand up on", had never been commissioned 😃

But back to yesteryear, the venue's hardly changed, magnificent dancefloor, although even this couldn't cater for the throng in attendance. Thoughtfully tables and chairs had been strategically placed around the dancefloor, for those of us of advancing years, who need to sit down between the stompers. 😃
If your persuasion was such, there were always the balconies, offering 'Fish bowl vision', but these were in the main, populated by the 'handbaggers'.
It would be remiss of me not to point out the generous serving of KTF'rs in attendance......Karen Crane, Debs, Carms, Lisa, Nogsy, Spanner, Alan Gibbons and Nige Brown. Leaving aside the last three, a KTF beauty pageant.....and yes I know I've included Nogsy, but he did look kinda cute 😃Thankfully he appeared in fine fettle, apart from an insistence on playing R&B 😃Some of you probably know he's not been well, but I told him everyone on KTF wished him a speedy recovery.
First DJ up was Tony Warot a selection of his play list appears below.
1) I lost a true love - Danny Wagner
2) What would I do - Tymes
3) What kind of lady - Dee Dee Sharp
4) Ever again - Bernie Williams
5) Wanting you - April Stevens
6) Ice man - Billy Watkins
7) I wish I was - Eddie Garrigan
😎 Cool Off - Detroit Executives
9) Cry your eyes out - Dottie Cambridge
10) That's not love - Holly St James

Whilst Tony firmly stuck with oldies, a policy required and insisted upon by the audience, nothing seemed out of place. The floor was heaving right from the off, and when the final record was played just after one, dancefloor space was still at a premium.
Derek Allen was next up delighting the crowd with.....
1) I want my baby back - Stevie Wonder
2) Suspicion - Funk Brothers
3) Crying Time - Brenda Holloway
4) Just because - Pat and the Blenders
5) Comin' home baby - Dee Dee Sharp
6) Love you babe - Paulette
7) My little girl - Bobby Garrett
😎 Try a little harder - Fi-Dels
9) Cause you're mine - Vibrations
10) In orbit - Joy Lovejoy

Again, I would like to stress this was never billed as anything other than a revival night and the crowd were in raptures.
Then on strolled the ex shades DJ Glenn Bellamy and his first track?
1) Double Cookin - Checkerboard Squares
2) I'm not strong enough - Four Perfections
3) You hit me - Alice Clark
4) Satisfied - Ben Aiken
5) Can't help lovin' you - Paul Anka
6) Come go with me (instr) - Ed Cobb Orchestra
7) Better use your head - Little Anthony & the Imperials
😎 Breakout - Mitch Ryder
9) Do what you wanna do - Paul Sinbad
10) Cry your eyes out - Dottie Cambridge
11) You didn't mean me no good - Jelly Beans
12) Something's burning - Marvellows
13) Help me - Al Wilson
14) Can't you see you're losing me - Mary Wells
15) Aint no soul left in these old shoes - Ronnie Milsap
16) Please let me in - JJ Barnes.

It wasn't that Glenn played more records than the other DJs it's just that he's more efficient, and actually enjoyed scribbling out his play list.
The last DJ to furnish me with a play list was the immortal Brian Rae.
1) Champion - Willie Mitchell
2) Sad girl - Carol Anderson
3) I can't do it - Eddie and Ernie
4) No one else can take your place - Inspirations
5) Didn't' say a word - Yvonne Baker
6) You got me where you want me - Larry Santos
7) I've got the need - Moments
😎 Lend a hand - Bobby Hutton
9) Wade in the water - Ramsey Lewis
10) Help me - Al Wilson

Even though some records were duplicated, a situation usually frowned upon, there was no frowning tonight! Just hundreds of happy faces, each with their own personal time machine, which had transported them back, some 25 years. The only thing that didn't regress was the price of the records in the record bar, they were firmly rooted in 2004.......but hey, you can't have everything.
I make no apologies for my reflections on a great night being somewhat wordy, I haven't done a review in ages and......it just seemed right.
No apologies from the organisers for the music policy either, oldies was the fare for the night, and it was consumed with passion by the ravenous horde, and if seconds had been available, then everyone's name would have been "Oliver".
As a codicil to this review, I think when Dave Godin coined the phrase "Northern Soul" most of the tracks played tonight would have measured up nicely to his interpretation of our wonderful scene!!

KTF Winston 😃

Ace releases for Nov

New Releases for NOVEMBER 2004 from Ace Records THE DAMNED / Machine Gun Etiquette (25th Anniversary Edition) - CHISWICK - CDWIKD 250 Formed in 1976, the Damned were Britain's first punk rock band. By 1979 they had managed to disintegrate and re-assemble, way before it was fashionable. By then punk rock and its neater sibling, new wave, were regularly producing real hits in the UK and the Damned were no exception, with three hit singles drawn from the MACHINE GUN ETIQUETTE LP released that year. more THE DAMNED / Smash It Up (25th Anniversary Edition) - CHISWICK - SMASH 001 Smash It Up was originally conceived as being in four parts. However somehow or other only 1, 2 and 4 were recorded during the sessions at Sound Suite and Wessex. The only version of Part 3 is Captains demo and so with much technological jiggery pokery we have slotted it in to produce the first (official) release of Smash It Up Parts 1-4. Besides that you get the original single A&B and the video - lucky you. more THE ROOMATES / The Classic Sound Of - ACE - CDCHD 1024 I first came across the Roomates back in the late 80s when I was editor of a small doo wop magazine. Concentrating mainly on the Italian American groups of the New York area in the late 50s and early 60s it quickly became apparent that there was a group right here in the UK who, according to the readers' letters I was receiving, were singing and recording in that very style. more CHARLES BUKOWSKI / Reads His Poetry - TAKOMA - CDTAK 6514 "THE WORLD'S GREATEST LOSER, BUT HE NEVER GAVE UP", booms Charles Bukowski with a beery menace at the City Lights Bookstore-sponsored reading in San Francisco, back in 1972. Bukowski never gave up himself and this poetic soundtrack to his life at that point has it all in abundance: tales of the horsetrack, unrepentant sex fiends, dogs with style, death, his childhood in Los Angeles. more THE NEWBEATS / Run Baby Run - ACE - CDCHD 1033 Falsetto fans, rejoice! Volume two of Ace's three volume Newbeats' Hickory retrospective boasts the RUN BABY RUN album (in magnificent stereo, no less) plus a heaping helping of rare non-album cuts. Like the first volume, "Bread And Butter / Big Beat Sounds" (CDCHD 1006), this essential collection is filled to overflowing with soulful, stomping, big-sound pop. The third and final volume will compile the Newbeats' remaining Hickory 45s, all surviving unreleased material as well as the complete Hickory solo recordings of Newbeats Larry Henley and the Mathis Brothers (Dean and Marc). more BRENDA LEE /Grandma, What Great Songs You Sang! / Miss Dynamite - ACE - CDCHD 1027 Here is the first volume in Ace's forthcoming programme of Brenda Lee re-issues that will see her first ten LPs for US Decca paired across five CDs. The best selling female pop vocalist of the early to mid 1960s, Brenda Lee was an international megastar who sold over 100 million records - she was voted Best Female Vocalist by the NME for five consecutive years - all before she was 21. And while it is true to say she showed a preference for recording ballads in order to attract the greatest number of record buyers, she also possessed one of the toughest rock'n'roll voices of the period - THE greatest according to John Lennon. more WHERE THE GIRLS ARE / Volume 6 - ACE - CDCHD 1032 Ace Records have been spoiling fans of femme pop this year, what with the "Boy Trouble", "Girls With Guitars" and "Good Girls Gone Bad" compilations, not to mention CDs by the Emotions, Sharon Tandy and Sue Thompson. Heck, I hear whisper that there's even a new "Early Girls" in the offing. Just as well, as the latest volume of "Where The Girls Are" has taken over a year to prepare for release. We keep trying to outdo ourselves, you see, hence the tantalising wait. But haste makes waste, as Jackie Ross used to say. Anyway, you can't have too much of a good thing, I reckon. more RICHARD BERRY / Yama Yama! The Modern Recordings 1954-1956 - ACE - CDCHD 1029 Richard Berry was still in his teens when he hooked up with Modern Records. A hungry young multi-talented man, with a desire to learn, an envelope-pushing career vision and a willingness to experiment with any and every style of black music, he strove to perfect his craft. His extraordinary versatility was both a help and a hindrance to his career. A help in that it enabled him to apply himself to any strand of R&B from languid doo wop to feral New Orleans R&B, but a hindrance, perhaps, in that hardly any two consecutive singles by Richard sound like they are by the same person. more WELL PLAY THE BLUES FOR YOU - STAX - SCD 8613 Think of Stax Records and chances are you'll think of Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, the Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes, Johnnie Taylor or others among the company's major soul acts. Not unreasonably so, either, as in both its blue and yellow incarnations Stax was rightly celebrated as the epicentre of quality Southern Soul. But - as befits a predominantly black music label based in the "Home Of The Blues" - the company also gave maximum respect to the genre of music that originally put Memphis on the musical map, and thus for most of its lifespan there was a steady stream of quality blues releases interspersed among the classic soul 45s released on Stax, Volt and the company's other subsidiary labels. more BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE / Fire&Fleet&Candlelight - VANGUARD - VMD 79250 1967's Fire&Fleet&Candlight captures Native American songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie gradually emerging from the earlier 60s folk scene, but still recognisable as a child of that musical movement with her quavering voice, guitar and mouth bow. Traditional fare as Lord Randall, Reynardine and the Lyke Wake Dirge (using Benjamin Britten's music) with Joni Mitchell songs The Circle Game and Song To A Seagull, the old-timey Bascom Lamar Lunsford song Dogget's Gap and eight of Sainte-Marie's own compositions including The Seeds Of Brotherhood and the wonderfully titled 97 Men In This Here Town Would Give A Half A Grand In Silver Just To Follow Me Down. more BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE / Moonshot - VANGUARD - VMD 79312 On 1972's MOONSHOT, Buffy had surrounded herself with the cream of Nashville session musicians (many of them were part of the group that would find their own fame, recording as Area Code 615). The musicians included Charlie McCoy, Billy Sanford, David Briggs, Norbert Putnam and Kenny Buttrey, as well as the Memphis Horns. The session mixes up Gene Thomasson's Lay It Down, Arthur Crudup's My Baby Left Me and Micky Newbury's Sweet Memories and Newbury with co-writer Townes Van Zandt's Mister Can't You See Me with her own original songs like Native North American Child. The songs are generally upbeat with Buffy singing out extrovertly over the punchy brass, rock chords and sinewy bass lines. more LARRY CORYELL&THE ELEVENTH HOUSE / Improvisations - VANGUARD - VMD2 79540 Popular musical movements can sometimes be so compelling that they affect all other forms of music around them. In the 1950s, rock 'n' roll changed the landscape for most country music and gave birth to such 'new' styles as skiffle. During the progressive rock age from the late 60s to early 70s, other genres were so marked by the musical and commercial changes of the era that they developed hybrid offshoots with true hybrid names - folk-rock, classical rock and jazz-rock. more THE SONICS / Have Love Will Travel - BIG BEAT - SONIC 001 Back in the mid-1960s, the legendary Sonics took rocknroll by the scruff of the neck and thrashed it to within an inch of its life, leaving a legacy of some of the most savage, visceral recordings ever made. more __________________________________________________________________________________ DAVE GODIN - A TRIBUTE Dave Godin died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday 15 October. He had been ill for some time and was fully accepting of his fate, though he put up a typically brave fight. more ............. http://www.acerecords.co.uk/extras/DaveGodin.html _________________________________________________________________________________ Produced by Ace Records Ltd
