Quick look back Llandudno Niter/Dayer

A very quick, and mean very quick look back, inc some plays
Did plan to do a few words on the recent niter/dayer but time is not something got a lot off so all can pass on is a quick word.

Niter overall was enjoyable, likes of Bob Hinsley, Dean Anderson, Kenny Burrell, dished out some cracking sets
Special mention to Joan who did the finishing spot and made sure nite finished on a high. Had some wild plan to get her plays but as with most of my plans made at events it didnt quite come off!

Dayer after at the West Shore club was a good one, varied spots spanning all styles, managed to scrounge 5 plays from Ritchie Andrew (which meant had to knock this brief word out! )

1) Bob&Gene I really love you Mo - Do.
2) Tobi Lark Ill steal your heart Palmer
3) Tate It takes more than love Cloverstreet
4) The Grier Bros "Weeping Baby" Melody
Disc
5) Pendulum Swingers Never should have loved you GWC

Overall a enjoyable 22 hours of soul, next one turns up in Oct

Northern Soul @ The Plinston! 1st Anniversary Party (Details) Friday 5th September 2003 is the date for the diary as North Herts biggest ...read more Rare Soul event celebrate their first 12 soulful months at the Garden City venue with a huge 'Thank You' party and a mandate to have a great time. There will be the usual 3 rooms available for those seeking soul self satisfaction: MAIN HALL: Northern Monsters&Forgotten Oldies; 6T's Newies and Crossover/Modern Anthems with 'The Usual Suspects'; Hammie, Fingers and TheBigO joined by regular and all round Soulful Guru Soul Sam, Mark Bicknell and Dave Flynn. THE MOJO ROOM: Located back in the original backdoor room for tonight only (as the SG6 Room is being used as a main bar for the night) and spinning a balanced mix of R&B, Boogaloo and Rhythm 'n' Soul. Ab, Leon Hewitt, The O'Hara's and TheBigO are joined by Mark Bicknell spinning his style of R&B belters. Check out why the slogan for the Mojo is 'The Little Room with the BIG Sound!' THE GHETTO: Modern&Crossover Soul with Soul Sam, Taffy and Nathan. Proving to be hugely popular and always jam-packed (even dancing on the tables and outside on the stairs at stages!!!) the Ghetto is fast building a reputation as one of THE Modern rooms in the South. Easy to understand why they have adopted the slogan 'It's A Family Affair!' as their anthem. Awesome - and then some! ( They even have their own official Ghetto Mascot - the hugely entertaining and all round nice guy - Tony Wildman.) In addition North Herts 6T's Mafia have decided to offer those attending a FREE woven anniversary patch to everyone through the doors (top quality and like the patches of old), FREE entry into the prize raffle with prizes donated by Beatin Rhythm Records, Kent Records, Keith Hammond Enterprises and Turntable Records as well as goodies the Mafia have brought in. The list includes latest CD's/45's, DVD's, Baseball Caps and the usual eyebrow raiser!?! There will also be a dance competition held during the evening with a first prize of £50, 2nd of £25 and 3rd of £15. However be warned that this is the 6T's Mafia we are talking about here and they are renowned for their warped sense of humour and ability to catch people out! (Should prove to be a goodie.) The night starts at 8pm-2am and entry for this event is £8 advance ticket (strongly advise) or £9 on the door but check before setting off as this is an expected sell-out. The box office number is 01462-672003. There is ample free parking both at the venue and all around and the Plinston Hall is located in Letchworth, Herts. That's a 30 min train ride from Kings Cross or by car down the A1(M), exit Junction 9 and the venue is just 2 mins away, 30 mins from Junction 13, M1. The average attendance throughout the year has been 375 and all are welcome to experience one of the most talked about venues in the South. More information can be obtained by emailing: nh6tsmafia@aol.com See you at the Go-Go!!!!!! HERT'S - FULL OF SOUL!

Scenesville At Phoenix 18 July 2003 by Gene Robertson

Firstly, I have to confess that this was my first visit in nearly two years (sorry Nick and Dawn!)
SCENESVILLE at THE PHOENIX, LONDON: 18th July 2003 by Gene Robertson
Firstly, I have to confess that this was my first visit in nearly two years (sorry Nick and Dawn!) and, of course, tonight made me realise just what I had been depriving myself of all this time. For those of you who don’t already know,”The Browns”, (Nick and Dawn to you) have now moved Scenesville to the Phoenix, just behind Oxford Circus, in London. The Phoenix has long been a haunt for the soul scene and the mod fraternity alike for at least 20 years, so being there was like a throwback to my youth, when I first began to frequent the place! Tonight was also a great night for meeting friends old and new, as I tagged along with old friend Shane Cox and his friend Mike, who I had met for the first time tonight. Anyway, after coffee and a liberal dose of soul records at my flat, Mike very kindly drove us on to the Phoenix, keeping the mood of the night alive with an excellent tape played in his car!! Unfortunately, we missed Dawn and Nick’s first spot of the night (but you can view all playlists below this article), so by the time we arrived, Chris Dale had just begun an excellent (as always) set.
Highlights of Chris’ spot were Betty Lou & Bobby Adams – “Dr Truelove” (TRAX) (I get so upset every time I hear this, as it reminds me of the one I bought in ’95 for £15, and promptly moved on to Mick Smith for £125. Oy Smiffy!! That must be about £375 you owe me in accrued interest by now!!); Jesse Johnson – “Left Out”; Peppermint Harris – “Wait Until It Happens To You”; Sugar & Spices – “Have Faith In Me”, to mention but many more. Shane took to the dancefloor immediately, and I never saw him again until 3am!! (only joking, really….).
Most noticeable during the night was the different type of folks in attendance; they ranged from city-type gents, young students to people just like ourselves, but the atmosphere was so alive, and really friendly. At the bar, I got chatting to a guy (whose name escapes me). It was his first soul night, but he was so overwhelmed at the good standard of music, and the overall friendliness of the night. I asked him if he’d be coming back…….and what do YOU think he said? There were a few record dealers with boxes in attendance, including Adey Potts, who made Shane cringe when he flourished Luther Ingram’s “If It’s All The Same To You Babe” at us, on offer for £375!!
Only two hours before did I refuse Shane’s offer on my worn copy!! Anyway, next up on the decks, after Chris, was Kitch. Apologies for the blaspheme in advance, but MY GOD – WHAT AN AWESOME SET!!!!!! How’s this for starters then? Admirations – “I Want To Be Free”; DC Blossoms – “Hey Boy”; Sharon McMahon – “Got To Find Another Guy” (which I remember was covered up as “Make It Last” by Florence Miller – thanks to Ion Tskalis for being one of the first to play that in ’84). Also heard was the brilliant Peewee, Shuck & Huey’s “Beside Myself”, which resulted in my first excursion to the dancefloor. Kitch also displayed the UK’s best kept secret, in the form of the Unknown Sailor cover-up – “Little Girl”, and finished a wicked set with “Keep Away” by the Appointments (the other side of “I Saw You There”, also given an airing earlier in his set).
Talk about fulfilling wishes – in a fit of excitement, I mentioned to Nick that I would “like to shake Kitch’s hand” for such an excellent spot. Before I knew it, he introduced me to the man himself for the pleasure!!!
Next up, Mr Andy Rix, who filled the dancefloor yet again by opening with Jay D. Bryant’s “I Won’t Be Coming Back” (hope that’s not true, Andy!), as well as the unissued acetates Andy always surprises us with. Personal highlights were: The Masquaders - “That’s The Same Thing”; Ronnie McNeir – Isn’t She A Pretty Girl” etc etc……. Always nice to hear the unissued acetates in the form on the Hytones (an alternative mix of “You Don’t Even Know My Name”); Keni Lewis, Irma & The Larks, The Vows – in fact, I could go on for ages, but there’s only enough you can squeeze into a review!!!
To round off the night, Dawn and Nick got together for their “Double-deckin’” spot, where they shared the decks for the final hour.
Between them, they kept the dancefloor momentum active with faves old and new such as Cecil Washington – “My Proposal”; Danny Moore – “Somebody New”; Cashmeres – “Show Stopper”; The Dolls – “The Reason Why” (NB – buy this while you can get it for £30 or less, ‘cos it’s bound to increase before long!); Carol & Gerri – “On You Heartache Looks Good” which Dawn played, and whilst she got up to dance to it, I could detect a snigger from Nick as he cued up the other side “How Can I Ever Find The Way” ready to play straight after!!!
Well, I do have to say that this must be one of the best double-siders to grace the scene. The night ended with Maxine Brown – “Oh No, Not My Baby” (so nice to hear Maxine’s excellent version being played – knocks spots off Manfred Mann or Rod Stewart’s versions any day!!), and Clyde McPhatter’s “Lonely People Can Afford To Cry”.
An excellent end to an outstanding night, then it was back in Mike’s car to my flat, until dawn finally broke at 5.30, where the three of us played more and more soul sounds accompanied by copious amounts of coffee!!! In conclusion, it must be said and known that Scenesville are certainly in the forefront of London Soul clubs.
How many other Soul nights in the South, other than the Dome, can boast a policy of ultra-rare and unissued quality soul sounds? Scenesville are, undoubtedly, in a class of their own, second to none. Long may you serve!!!!

Competition Aint Nothing at Bar Italia Scooter Club All-dayer

Until Sunday, Herbal was always one of those buildings you’d pass on the Kingsland Road without ever clocking; the industrial look and feel lending itself more towards Illuminati headquarters than a soul contingent.
However, turning the street corner at 11:55 Sunday morning left me in no doubt I was at the right place. Patch was looking more Patrick Swayze than traffic warden, shuffling road cones in an arabesque fashion as one side of the street was cordoned off (legitimately, I may add!) for 14 hours of free scooter parking.
Having experienced my fair share of promoting all-dayers, I expected to walk into at least a bit of chaos … no DJs, sound system playing up etc … but Al, Patch and Paul had been there since day break working their magic so everything was bang on schedule with the doors opening at midday.
If you’ve never checked it out before, the smooth concrete floors, steel girders and ‘corrugated’ MDF interior make Herbal one of the freshest venue's around. And thus, this was a perfect choice for Bar Italia Scooter Club’s first all-dayer.
The infusion of the day was a fine blend of scooters and all things soulful. Music was given a kick-start in the upstairs room by Kev Moore and downstairs by Mr Mischief.
Trickster and Estu, in fine style, were first up on the floor …much to the bewildered looks from the bar staff who didn’t have a clue what “all the white stuff” was covering the floor. Like all good Sundays, the pace was slow to start off with, but by late afternoon (according to Andy’s deluxe clicker) the number through the door passed the 100 mark. Eddie did the BISC proud in the promotions department, wearing down good shoe leather luring in people out for a sunday stroll in Shoreditch.
Although a precedent for 6Ts northern was set, the promoters worked hard to make this dayer unique – scattering a generous handful of ska, reggae, funk and modern into the proceedings.
The customers were definitely kept satisfied - with a great mix of DJs from across the board including Colin G, Frankie, Jean-Paul Séculare, Keb Darge, Kev Moore, Mr Mischief, Paul St John, Stephane Yver, Tef, Tim Finch, Tony Smith and Trafford.
Besides the BISC themselves, scooter clubs lending their support included Chelmsford, Mr.Men, Maidenhead, Solos and the CC Riders. From a scooterist’s point of view, there are two great advantages to this venue. Firstly, the secure scooter parking directly across the road and, if the bouncers keeping a watchful eye over the bikes didn’t reassure you enough, secondly the fact you could sit comfortably and get a perfect view of your scooter all day long, through the window that makes up one entire wall of the upstair’s room. Thankfully no one found that necessary, mind!
The day brought together an eclectic mix of people, not only scooterists, and as a mod that spends most of her time on the northern soul scene it was refreshing to see so many young people there (or that could have just been a trick of the atmospheric lighting!).
With an attendance of over 250 people come 1am, both floors were packed and the atmosphere was sparkling. With one hour left, a difficult decision had to be made – which room to spend it in. In the ‘loft’, Mr Séculare handed the decks over to Keb one last time, closing the night with a nice smelting of funk and northern. For those demanding grittier soul, Tony Smith was on board to bring the night to a hand-clapping close downstairs.
My only complaint is that the 14 hours went far too quickly but hey, the girl can’t have everything.

Last night at the Plinston

Last night me and jackie went to the Plinston. What a welcome we got on arrival at the pub beforehand. Everyone made us feel so welcome,we last saw each other at Soulgate and we feel a whole new set of friends has emerged. last night was wicked, the time pasted so quickly the old tunes are the best, but Taffy played some excellent tunes that had us all spinning on our toes, not a sad face in sight, jackie and amy danced al-night in between jackie eating crisps and chocolate, much too everyones digust.Everyone was smiling sweating and enjoying themselves too the full.jackie and Kaz took the buckets round again for the Royal Marsden Hospital we raised £180 what a result, we will pass the money onto Paul nad terry.
Thanks again for a great welcome and a great night.
We will be back for the Anniversary.
Hope that all who received the Soulgate video enjoyed watching it, as i had a great time filming them.
As for neil calling Tony the Honey MOnster(cheeky git) he,s been called alot worst.

Barry White RIP

Just read news soul legendary artist Barry White has passed away

The singer died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, at around 2pm British time yesterday, said his manager, Ned Shankman. White had suffered kidney failure from years of high blood pressure.
http://www.thescotsman.co.uk/entertainment.cfm?id=732662003]Scotsman report

Own personal view on Barry White, while more famous for his 70s classics, that to me have quietly stood the test of time. His contribution to Soul Music is much greater. Only in recent years have been aware of just what things in the 1960s he was involved with. From record labels, 45s under his own and assumed names and much more. Will post up more 60s info later hopefully as am sure the rest of the media will concetrate on his 70s onwards stuff.

If are aware of worthwhile resources or have any info, sure be of interest if you posted up

New Releases for JULY 2003 from Ace Records

Funk, dial, sweet soul, blues ... and more All in latest ACE releases
New Releases for JULY 2003 from Ace Records
FUNK SOUL SISTERS - CDBGPD 154 (Also on vinyl BGP2 154)
There is sometimes an element of giggling and laughing involved in putting together an Ace compilation. Not condescending or rude laughter, but more the sort that you get when you are young and Santa Claus has been with a large pile of presents. Its an uncontrollable urge forced onto you by the sheer joy of being given so much good music to play with.
CLASS&RENDEZVOUS VOCAL GROUPS - CDCHD 892
Aces tour de force of vocal group compilations from West Coast labels continues and now the spotlight is turned on the Class&Rendevous marques. The Class label was started by Leon RenÃÆ’© in 1951 and ran for some fifteen years, with its associated Rendezvous logo appearing in 1958. Leons son Rafael-Leon (nicknamed Googie) was a major force at the labels, doing both A&R work and appearing as an artist.
DION / Inside Job + Its Only Jesus - CDCHD 895
Theres a picture in his autobiography The Wanderer of a young Dion hanging out in shades on the corner of Crotona and 183rd Street. It is captioned "Here I am looking cool..." and it serves as a reminder of the Bronx neighbourhood that formed the backdrop to his early success in 1958. It was an area of gangs and posing where image mattered, and it was hardly surprising that the sudden huge hit I Wonder Why took Dion&the Belmonts to fame and fortune way beyond what the hood could offer
JIMMY WITHERSPOON / Sings The Blues Sessions - CDCHD 896
In case you hadnt noticed, Ace has been getting thoroughly stuck into its owned repertoire of late. Our extensive-bordering-on-exhaustive campaign to digitise every important RPM/Kent recording by B.B. King is well under way, the still-relatively new 10 inch series is coming on nicely and the long-awaited Modern Downhome series has been garnering all the critical plaudits it obviously merits. Next month will see the first volume proper in our "Central Avenue Scene" series, which will initially draw its repertoire from Jake Porters Combo imprint and eventually spread out to incorporate Modern and Recorded In Hollywood/Cash/Money recordings. And as well as all this, were also about to give the Ace treatment to the Modern and Kent recordings of another acclaimed blues legend who fully deserves it, the great Jimmy Witherspoon.
THE DIAL RECORDS SOUTHERN SOUL STORY - CDKEN2 223
There were two entirely different US indie record companies named Dial, both most often remembered for one major artist apiece. The first, owned by Ross Russell, operated from 1945 to the early 50s, initially out of Los Angeles, latterly New York City, and is renowned for its recordings of the colossus of bebop sax artistry, Charlie Parker, who Russell managed for a while. The second, owned by William "Buddy" Killen, operated between 1961 to the early 80s from Nashville and is most famous for its recordings of one of the most original and successful southern soul singers of the era, Joe Tex. Killen was Texs mentor from the early chitlin circuit days and on to international stardom. The subject of this 51-track double CD, authoritatively annotated and compiled by John Broven and John Ridley is Buddy Killens Dial Records.
IN PERFECT HARMONY / Sweet Soul Groups 1968-77 - CDKEND 219
Group soul harmony has been dear to the hearts of soul fans and collectors for more than three decades now and, for almost as long as there has been such a thing, has been a prominent feature of the Ace catalogue. Down the years we have featured - and continue to feature - wonderful single-CD sets devoted to the Manhattans, Mad Lads, Impressions, Chi-Lites, Detroit Emeralds, Delfonics and many others who, for those of us who are aficionados, are pretty much the be-all and end-all of sweet soul harmony.
FATBACK / Remixed - CDSEWD 139 (Also on vinyl SEW2 139)
Its not often that Tony Rounce and myself are taken back to our younger days, just over a decade ago, when DJ chart returns, what was played on KISS, or Choice, or, God forbid in Ibiza, was a central part of our lives. Banging tunes have these days taken a back seat in our lives as we discuss for days on end whether Cropper or Young is the better guitarist (an honourable draw), or if the window in the office should be left open or closed (that one might yet come to blows). But, suddenly, we are back in that world thanks to the wonderful, influential and often sampled music of Fatback.
THE COUNT FIVE / Psychotic Revelation - CDWIKD 230
San Jose, California, 1964. Local rocknroll band the Squires has the good fortune of hooking up with Irish native John "Sean" Byrne, fresh from playing with Dublin beat group, the Scorpions. Though Byrne has written a song that the group, now renamed Count Five, completely believes in, it is to be rejected over the course of the next couple of years by several record labels, including Capitol and Fantasy.

SOULGATE N14 OH HAPPY DAY - THE REVIEW

SOULGATE N14 OH HAPPY DAY! - THE REVIEW
Jane and I arrived at the ‘Rising Sun’ for 11.30am to be greeted by the collective mugging of the rest of Letchworth’s 6T’s Mafia, bedecked in the memorial T-shirts, and more than a little banter of a very dubious nature!
12pm and the doors opened and Trickster and his new lovely wife, Etsu graced the decks for the first set, spinning some stomping Northern monsters from across the eras. The standard had been set with a cracking start. Many of us were quite concerned about Tricksters memory problem. He obviously has one as he can’t seem to remember who he is and what he looks like, judging by the number of flyers, stickers and magazines that adorned his record box with his face and fine dancing moves plastered all over it!!!!!!! Remember if you see him, remind him who he is as he may be a little confused. ? From here on the numbers started to rise and the DJ’s began to gather (although as usual it was the normal scrum, fighting for prime times etc). The list of DJ’s for the early sessions up to 8pm included the lovely Jo Wallace (who spun a great West Hampstead memories set that saw me trying for my first cardiac arrest of the day); Ivor Jones, Steve Gaunori, Teff, Buey (a man with mad facial hair and an even madder sense of dancing style), Mike Ritson amongst others. (apologises for anyone I’ve left out but my youngest has chewed the list!)
The sets ranged from classic 6T’s to current Modern Soul movers that kept the crowd shuffling away throughout the day. This being Soulgate there was a fantastic atmosphere as usual with the accent not only on the quality soul being spun but also on the social side, with many new friendships being forged and many old ones being saluted over many many MANY drinks at the packed bar (can someone tell my wife Jane as she can’t remember a thing past 3pm-hmmmmm). This to me is one of the reasons why Randys alldayers have always been a ‘Must’ on the London calendar. He never lost sight of the fact that ‘This Thing Of Ours’ should be about, not only great music, but also having fun with great mates and building what can only be described as a ‘Soulful Family’.
Those that attend will understand completely what I mean, those that have never been can only imagine what it is like to be stood in the middle of a jam packed room, singing at the top of your lungs to Annette Snell, Teddy Pendergrass or the Soul Brothers Six ‘I’ll Be Loving You’ (all Southgate anthems), arm in arm with people who before this day were complete strangers to you but who now, at this time and in this place, were your brothers and sisters. This is the magic of Soulgate, this is Randy’s legacy. The sun shone all day and the numbers started to get bigger by 5pm.
A special mention to Paul from Dublin who made the journey for the event and who came up to the decks to express just how good he thought it was. Top bunny. Many people chose to sit outside, watching the world go by to a soundtrack supplied by some of Detroit’s, Philadelphia’s and New York’s finest. The atmosphere was building and many commented that they felt the evening was going to be one to remember. The shout of ‘Free Food’s Up!!’ put that anticipation on hold as the need for nourishment of an unsoulful kind took over. The raffle tickets were going fast and many a loving look was passed over the table stacked full of prizes and auction items donated by Richard Searling, Dave Rimmer, Bee Cool Publishing, Keith Hammond, KRL Promotions, Dave Godin, Scenesvile, Drunken Monkey, Kolla, Ady Croasdell and both myself and Taffy. (Our eternal thanks and gratitude to you all for your support.)
The evening came and saw the Rising Sun packed to the rafters with an atmosphere to die for. Mick Smith, Roger Stewart, Ion The Greek (not Colin The Greek as Seabrook called him), Tony Smith and Terry Jones all had the honour of getting the crowd moving and boy did they do a great job! Stomping Soul mixed with upfront Modern and a generous dollop of West Hampstead Rhythm ‘n’ Soul, Deep Soul and mid-tempo gems that Randy had introduced to the scene first (including Bobby Kline, Soul Brothers 6, Jerry Ganey, Theola Kilgore, Lou Johnson…the list is endless.) I admit that there were more than a few of us with tears in our eyes when these were being played. Terry’s set was fantastic and there were many comments saying the same. Top man-top set!
The raffle draw took place at 9pm with yours truly behind the mike and being heckled at every stage by not only the bunch of reprobate girlies down the front (hi ladies) but also my wife! Taffy, who was still able to stand upright at this stage quite surprisingly, did his best to keep things moving along but kept getting engaged in deep chat with just about every winner — Muppet! Next was the auction and Taffy took over for this. I feel that he may not have quite grasped the job description of what is required for an auctioneer as on the very first item, the rather wonderful James Brown Rubber Duck (I kid you not!!!) donated by me and that he said wouldn’t raise 10p, we had an opening bid of £5 on. Taffy’s jaw dropped as he uttered those memorable words ‘WHAT! For this piece of shit!!!!???’ His jaw was positively Bob Cratchett like when the final price of £26 was reached. I of course gloated at every opportunity at my superior ability to know what will raise money and what will not. (Note: It transpires that the lady who won was actually using a friend’s wallet and money that had fallen asleep I believe. Top woman!)
The other items included a set of Stax UK picture cards that went for £55, signed copies of Casino’ (by Maxine Brown & Dean Parrish) and Dennis Coffey’s book (signed by him obviously — DOH!) £50, a James Brown doll that was donated by Darcy I think and who won it back in the raffle and then asked for it to be auctioned off that raised £55, a picture of Ady looking more dodgy than usual that Kolla paid £30 for and our star item….Dave Godin’s own copy of the ‘Greetings to the UK Motown Appreciation Society..’ 45, complete with Dave’s ‘The Detroit Report’ booklet that raised £150. However, I feel I should point out here that Toby was winning the bids at £120 but sadly was outbid by someone else in the room at £150. His face dropped, his heart sank, a tear made it’s lonely way down his ashen cheek….but not as much as it did 30 seconds later when he realised that the person who had outbid him was none other than his wife who hadn’t realised he was the winning bidder at that stage when she placed her bid on his behalf! There are some things that money can’t buy — for everything else there is Toby’s missus. Priceless. I have to say the whole auction was a good laugh and everyone there entered into the spirit of the event. Even Ian Seabrook who was happily bidding on a few items and who it was pointed out over the mike was obviously there without his wife Kay as he was bidding quite openly and without a hint of fear that we have come to associate with him when out with the lovely Mrs Seabrook.
It was then a return to the music right up to the close. Mick Smith and Roger Stewart did the honours playing a mainly West Hampstead memories set mixed with 100 Club toons that really set the seal on what had been an already fantastic night up to then. The place was dripping sweat and every available space was utilised for dancing, including the wall outside (and I hope someone got a photo of the little girl and her dad giving it some soulful welly on it.) Taff and I were doing the last hour but sadly the Noise Police moved in at 12.15am and shut us down an hour early, allowing us only the chance to spin Flame N King ‘Oh Happy Day’, Ann Sexton’s ‘You’ve Been Gone Too Long’ and the Tyrell Corporation’s ‘6,O, Clock’. Then it was all over, the end of an era and the close of what had been a very emotional day for everyone.
Over £1400 had been raised (with Johnny T and all at the Valatone adding another £400+ the following day from their door sales that night) and the end saw many hugs and emotional goodbyes. I think all that were there would agree that it was a memorable day and a fitting farewell to one of London’s TOP Faces. The scene is never going to be the same again and he will be missed by all his friends but we know that somewhere out there, at a dancehall ‘up there’, he’s stood at the bar, tape in hand, complete with his usual comments on each track, waiting for us to arrive and kick of his latest event: Soul(heaven)gate. You know it! God bless you mate. Your gonna be missed more than words can say. TheBigO - Best line of the day has to go to Jon Buck commenting on our money raising ideas: Oi! Having heard you were holding a raffle, auction, collection and charity T-shirts and posters I was half expecting to see a Northern Soul Charity Car Wash being held outside the pub!!!! If only we’d have thought of that sooner!
Embarrassing moment (Jesus there were loads throughout the day so I’ll go with mine): Me running up to Mick on the decks and raving over the Motown record he just played that sounded absolutely brilliant, obviously some rare acetate he’d just got from Mr Anderson in Kings Lynn I was thinking. Then having to suffer Mick’s gloating grin under that ‘Saddam’ tash of his as he gleefully pointed out it was ‘Anit no mountain high enough’ by Marvin & Tammi — a record that I own just to compound my misery! SHAME! SHAME! OH THE SHAMEEEEEEEEEEE!

Weekend View Jun 2003 100 Club and This Thing Of Ours

Weekend View Jun 2003 100 Club and This Thing Of Ours
A rushed view on weekend, 8.10am on a Saturday and got out of door only 10 mins late, picked up Ritchie and Ann, no sign of Dick John ( found out later hadnt finished Friday nite off yet) and set off. Was going to be a special one, the alldayer "This Thing Of Ours" due to the recent sad news, being a "Celebration of Randys Life and Music" and along with the 100 Club being on after as well it was one of those must gos. As Ritchie was making a return to scene of some of his past going ons, involving tales of vinyl, shoeshops and all-sorts, and for me a first visit to that far off capitol since last year it seemed was going to be a break from the old routine. As always things got off to a good start, set off , 1 hour later was back in Llandudno doing a quick car swap. Dont ask.
Unexpectedly the rest of journey went fine, got down there quick found pub first time. Settled down for 10 hours of all-dayer, just a quick brief bit as more posted on site. Lots of catch ups, meet ups, and good to meet at lasts was going on, especially all the "online" lot who use this site. Outside the event was creeping into the high street, the southern sun was fierce (for us from more temperate climes), the beer flowed and the event was kicking.
By now right old atmosphere was going, the dancefloor inside was busy, pub packed and a constant stream of djs kept music flowing, and as beer was flowing, was most enjoyable. By now after over 8 hours of the event things were just a bit hazy, our plans to get to 100 club swung in and was time to nip down to 100. As said in other post, many thanks go out to all who were involved with this event, with the sad news of Randy departure in everyone's mind, the way event went was a credit to all involved. Thanks After the dayer it was a quick jump to central London, quick as could be if take into accounts our tour of east London, all due to a forced police detour leaving us at mercy of inner London traffic signs.
All we wanted was a sign saying London central, instead the whole city was against us, we ended up in all sorts of places, dead ends in inner London estates. Was just one of them nights, even taxi drivers and garage blokes were at it, giving us wrong directions. Eventually and I mean eventually ended up round the back of 100 parking. Been a fair while since last visit to 100 club, and have to say as soon as walking thru door realised what had been missing. Straight away could pick up that buzz. Down stairs and place was packed, quick look round and after getting over shook of first no Dave Rimmer in place (did they trade him in for air conditioning) then Johnny T greeting me in a very frightening way! Though first passed on good news that a great big wad of cash took from the Valatone event was passed on to the fund. Nice one. Had a quick stop and take it all in and it felt good.
Bumped into fellow Llandudno renegade Christian and also Dick john had made it after all. Guest djs on nite were Mick H, Marco S and Neil Jones, with regs Butch. Mick Smith and of course Ady himself. Think right in saying nite was split up into 30 min sets, Great stuff from Mick H, stuff like Imp Cs Nu-Rons Camaros etc Mick said will pass on full playlist later, Marco S started one sets off with announcement no r n b, no x-over , just stompers and did just that with great set, Neil Jones think pushed out 3 sets, never been to his Bury event so dont know how typical it was but many popular sounds being pushed out. The regs pushed out great stuff, Butch dished out likes of the always so good to hear cover up Eric Lomax, the sounds better and better each time, great Jean Carter I Want to Know, Mellow Souls, Ritchie Adams Flashback and so on
A first hear for me other version of Emanuel Laskys 1975 Dt 45 " Id rather leave on my feet (than on my knees) did get full info on 45 from him, but names gone west stuff think is 100% , its on DT as well, but only 2 copies, anyone fill in artist info or background. Mick Smith and Ady pushed out some great stuff as well, but as think hit a wall at the 20 hour mark so all details unlocked at moment As said well busy with large crowd, the air-conditioning certainly seemed to make a big difference, though not sure if on 100% of the nite as later on just could have been me getting hotter with ac saving me from full meltdown.
Always surprises me at times just how, who and how often you bump into people, loads had caried on from the dayer event, but also bumped into many from all over uk at places get to odds: few things running round in head, maybe of interest Were not too young - Mick H played Camaros one - know of 3 versions of this all Jackie Beavers related - Karen Stirland? 150 quidish and not very good imo, Jackie Beavers one and of course the Camaros one, sure once heard yet another version female group more uptempo, anyone ? Mick H (who run into recently more often than me own family) passed on that the next Union Club is a Stafford flavoured nite
Have a present passed on from Claire for Kates birthday who lives around Paul O way, if anyone meeting up with either and could pass it on please let us know, so she can get it soonest. Come 7 ish time to get home, as now at 23 hr mark it seemed a good idea. Easy journey back and was back to Llandudno.
Verdict on it all, in past the cost, time it takes and so on have meant journeys down been bit limited, often fall victim to the easy option when faced with a choice of a 5/6 hour journey or a 1 hour journey when event choosing. As found nite certainly was one of most enjoyable events been to over this year just say now getting up to speed with rail discount system. Thanks to Ady, all the djs, and everyone else involved for a great time.

Soulgate N14 = Oh Happy Day!

:-D Just a quick post until I can recover enough to send in a full report and photos later this week. The whole day was a great sucess and a fantastic atmosphere throughout, with many of the old faces coming down for this a celebration of Randys life and music.

The auction and the raffle raised over £1400 for Cancer Research UK and Royal Marsden Hospital and the place was rocking right up until the Noise Police closed us down around 12.15am. Result!!!!

On behalf of Taffy and both Terry&Paul Cozens Id like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone who attended and donated prizes. The big man, if he was looking down, would certainly have been smiling and I guess would have been very proud.

Full report later - bath and a full recovery await.

Soulgate Update

Further update on the alldayer -

The raffle prize fund is growing (all proceeds going to the Royal Marsden Hospital as per Randys wishes) with donations coming from KRL records, Manifesto, Dave Rimmer, Dave Godin, Richard Searling, Keith Hammond to name but a few.

The prize fund includes latest CDs, back issues of Togetherness and Soulful Kinda Music fanzines, Videos of Rare Soul Acts from the 60s, Rare Soul books etc etc. There will be an auction on some of the tasty items including the Motown Greetings to the UK supplied by Dave Godin and the booklet of Daves trip to the Motor City (a lot of interest in this so far!); original Stax publicity cards and, my fave and newly arrived, the James Brown Rubber Duck (and NO I am not kidding!!!)

To maximise the money raised we will be allowing those that may be just visting the dayer for a few hours to make their bids early or they may phone in to place a phone bid. A full list of the auction items will be published here later this week. So, please dig deep and help us to raise as much money as possible. The hospital needs it and will be grateful of anything they recieve.

More On The Dark Side Of Current Scene - Dodgy Reissues?

Hi All,
Well it may be close to November the 5th but no more fireworks from me I promise, well not yet anyway, I hope my Theme Park items were taken as tounge in cheek with a slight serious tinge as recently the commercial eliment has become a little too much... still the board game was a good idea and is now in production lol. However, still the Northern Soul dark side continues with yet again more abuse or so it would seem this time in the to be polite re issue field of otherwise hard to find rare Soul records being pressed, now this practice has gone hand in hand since the year dot but it dont make it right does it, some may argue that it makes rare and popular tunes available to the masses at a reasonable price which is a fair comment but again it dont make it right.
Recently I have seen several new titles out there which I suspect are basically bootlegs including Bobby Reed - Time Is Right For Love, Kurt Harris - Emperor To My Babys Heart, Baby Washington - Leave Me Alone, Carol Anderson - Sad Girl, Mel Britt, Shell Come Running Back, Constellations - I Dont Know About You B/W I Didnt Know How To and possibly the biggest pisser off for collectors Mr Soul - What Happened To Yesterday.
All of these titles have been made to look like the original in terms of label design and retail at £10.00 each now take on board that at least 1000 copies may have beed pressed of each title take out production costs of maybe £2.00 per record but I suspect its less thats possibly £8,000 per title profit x seven titles is a possible profit sold as retail of £56,000 ok some will be sold wholesale so knock off five grand still leaves a possible £50,000 hard cash to be made on these records if you can call them that! The strange thing is that all of these titles are available on compact disc so in terms of wanting to enjoy the tunes as home entertaiment is there any need to produce this batch on vinyl? Call me a purist, snob or whatever but rare Soul collecting has always been about the chase, tracking down a record, doing the deal and moving on to the next one, how can such re issues warrent any credability or have any collectable value for the future, itd true that certain big title old pressings do sell at inflated prices on ebay for example, but to destroy big collectable records in this day and age is nothing more than criminal.
Not destroying the true original value but sometimes can kill a top tune dead in the water as it no longer is exclusive. Of course if all the correct lines have been followed prior to these records being pressed then I will retract my comments here, so if the MCPS and or the BPI channel has been taken where upon you pay a fixed fee for each track which is put aside in a fund should the official ownwer or publisher of the work appear then he or she can claim basically a small payment, or if direct permission has been secured form the owner which will validate the authenticity of these so called re issues. Again this seems to me to be a direct abuse of the ideals and ethics of the Norhern Scene and is yet another way to make a fast buck at the exspence of firstly the recording artiste, producer, label and publishing owners and more importantly the Soul fan.
I feel you would be better off spending your £10.00 on a nice little cheap original at least then you are keeping it real to the scene and yourself, some people may suggest that the artistes see nothing of the huge amounts of money the top tunes go for via various dealers but thats a totally seperate issue and at least you are buying into something which is basically second hand and which has not been manufactured in modern time for financial gain, anyhow collectors and DJs have their own minds and money come to think of it, hane their own minds and do what they do as it is simply what you do, all DJs for example should play nothing less than authentic original records, sorry but if you cant stand the heat get the hell out of the kitchen as this is the finest Soul food in the world. I dont own a bootleg, would not dream of playing one at a venue and feel that is far too easy as we could all do that with the titles that currently seem to be hitting the streets, at least the likes of Grapevine 2000, Ace/Kent etc. go through the correct legal channels so these guys I salute, the other fast buck merchants well I hope they get stuck with any iffy questionable so called second issues, strange one of the labels here the Mr Soul 45 is on Genuine perhaps this word should have been researched prior to going to press, I have a pretty good idea of the source of this current batch but for legal reasons I cant really go there can I?
If this current trend continues I can see many more big titles coming out, but one good thing is it does not in anyway spoil the real deal and the original records, a bit like rare works of art like the Mona Lisa for example as there are millions of copies and prints worldwide but only one original. Im not having a go as it makes no difference to me and many others who are serious record people but it does make a nonsence out of the meaning rare hard to find and not often seen, so Mr Soul aka Al Scott is still a shit rare record on original and the fakes are just worthless and cant or rather should not be played at a venue for example as your not really playing it are you your cheating yourself and the public which can not be right? Another point is why make them look like the authentic originals, why if your going to do this just put them out on a white label then at least you know what you are dealing with.
Still something else to be sold in the Theme Park gift shop, but dont file under rare Soul please because they are not.

re: al scot Bootlegs yes.i certainley agree on this whole shambles of lookalike labels.& the profits that end up in a little villiage in worksop notts. the only way of combatting this scam is not let djs known for playing bootlegs appear behind the decks.promoters i;am taiking aboat you. stay clear of venues & promoters & there so called bootleg djs who & try con the paying punters. and if you are out & aboat and happen to hear a al scott go over to the decks & if it is a £10.00 lookalike.do what i wouid do skim it back to worksop were it belongs with the rest of them. anon

re: blame the dealers also.. Interesting stuff cause i have djd with most of the so called Big DJs(WELL THEY THINK THEY ARE)LOL and 50% of them have played a booth or a dub at some stage and still do. I remember being a resident at the 100club/csc and certain Big DJs slipping in the odd dub with a scan of the original label. They might deny this but i know it to be true, christ ive played the odd dub myself of an unissued acetate. I personally dont think you should blame the DJs but hit the record dealers who are making profits from selling bootleg material. They are the worst offenders in my opinion. You here all these moans about bootleggers (rightly so) but what about the people moving the stuff? so when out over the next few weeks and looking at records maybe people should let dealers know that there not happy with them selling this kinda illegal material.

 re: blame the dealers also..
Off topic comment but I particularly liked the story of the club in the North East which has two decks spinning with a couple of bootlegs on them but plays CDs all night, is it really true? Fair enough, it doesnt really matter what format you play at many clubs because a lot of people really dont seem to want to hear a new track unless its on a CD (strange but true) but the fact they bothered spinning records they are not playing is laughable. On the above topic, good article Mark and very fair comment. I guess a lot of dealers will tell you that they have to make a living and their occupation is selling people what they want to buy, not trying to become a saint. The people who press up this stuff are the ones to blame, but I guess that this pales into insignificance against the 4 Vandals, Venetia Wilson etc frauds which were touted about by that idiot as originals and are now available at "knock down" prices. Still, they are quite expensive compared to the vastly superior tracks in this latest batch. And some record company put them on CD didnt it? Unbelievable....

re: blame the dealers also.. its also seems funny how a certain auction site has one or two sellers who offer white labels of the latest bootlegs afew weeks before they become common and also they also seem to have stocks of the 4 vandels v williams etc

Different Strokes...or pulling a few ? well here we go again, the old Bootleg Monster raises its head again. Love em or dispise em theyve been around since the late Sixties. You pays your money and you takes your chance as they say. Theres two things that motivate people Need & Greed. Couple this with your own Income, and the picture becomes clearer. Bootlegs are Cash generators for the Bootlegers, and a Godsend for some of our community, and just like fake Rolex Watches theres Fake records. Human nature is and always will be a good leveler of things. Promoters could if they wished "Ban boots from the decks" but would it stop Bootlegging, probably not. Its up to the Individual really whether you support it or not. Yes "Put up or Shut up". Meanwhile the bootlegging continues.
Best Wishes To All Ritchie.

Re: Different Strokes...or pulling a few ? Like most collectors, I have the odd boot in my collection though they were all bought in ignorance as a young lad 20 years ago and I only hang on to them now for old times sake (eg I bought one of the off-centre Mel Britts at the Notts Oddfellows in Leicester when I was 15...I had no idea of the value of a real one so didnt realise that the £3 asking price meant it was obviously being sold as a boot. Ill never chuck or sell it because its a part of my northern history but I recognise it for what it is). I wouldnt buy a boot now and would never DJ with one if I ever DJd anywhere. Not a matter of people finding out - just wouldnt sit right with me. That said, Im not too exercised about this latest batch of bootlegs, either. If people want to waste £10-20 on a bootleg, fine by me. I agree with Mark that they would be better off buying a cheap original but it takes all sorts to make the world go round, doesnt it? Some people (most of us actually) prefer vinyl to CD and not everyone can afford four figure sums for rarities; maybe they get a nice feeling out of half owning a Masquaders or whatever? Two points really: 1) Its a shame for the original artists/writers - they are the ones who are really being ripped off 2) I guess it is, in some ways, a healthy sign for the scene - you dont see many bootlegs of old 70s disco records, 80s heavy metal or 90s house floating around, after all...

Northern Soul Bootlegs Thank you for bringing this up. I have NO idea of the purpose of these things. Every one of these shit pressings are available on high quality CDs, which are legitimate and CHEAPER! I have a really large collection of northern soul 45s and to me, the best part is finding good songs. I dont care if theyre worth big money or very little money. Good songs are good songs. Like most people, I cant afford 4 figure records. Id rather have a whole pile of original cheapies that you dont hear as often. Ive spun extremely rare and expensive records at gigs and theres really no reason for me to do it, so I bring two large books of CDs with way more songs on them. The most important part is the music. I get to play way more sounds and with better quality. As far as "cheating" on the decks, I dont grasp the whole concept because no one competes with me. I think playing legit reissues and CDs with your own 45s burnt onto them is the way to go. This way your collection stays safe at home with little wear and tear. I have no need to impress anyone when they step up to the decks. I have impressed many in the past and anyone who knows me personally knows that my collection, since 1978 is 99% originals, no matter what type of music. I have nothing to prove. If music is good, then it should be heard. Thats just for the love of the music. Now-about the money aspect: The act of making a fast buck from this junk really pisses me off! It s disgusting when top guys like Ady Croasdell, Richard Searling, Andy Rix, Kev Roberts, etc. go through all of this trouble to put these specialty items out there for us, and people want to take what they did and press up these junk 45s and then, have the nerve to turn around and demand ridiculous prices for these unauthorized inferior products. Its a big waste of time when Im scrolling through E-Bay, too! If other people want to get in on the action, why not put out things that havent been comped out, yet? Bring something else to the table and let the experts do their thing. They dont really care about the scene when they do shit like that. They take away from it. I make my own CDRs of northern soul from legit CDs that I have gladly paid for. I make these just to play in my car and every now and then I use them at gigs. If someone new to northern soul, who is a personal friend asks for a copy, Ill gladly give them one, just to get them started. From there, they can go buy their own stuff. As far as my vinyl, not yet comped out legitimately, Ill gladly trade my own CDRs with other like minded collectors, just to share music and for that reason alone. Overall, people need to only support the legitimate producers of high quality reissues and buy the real CDs/vinyl themselves. Without that support, such items as the Kent CDs, and the Goldmine Soul Supply would never exist. I guess people who really care about the scene wont buy this junk anyway.
Right on again Mark!

Re: Northern Soul Bootlegs OKAY.... I dont believe that "legal" reissue labels mean that the writers/artists are better off. The money tends to go to label owners... if anywhere at all, normally it goes nowhere. I dont believe that "legal" labels never do anything illegal, I know that many releases are without question no more legal than the pressings they slag off. I think lookalike bootlegs are good and there should be alot more of them, because.... 1. it will sort out the true collectors from the ego trippers. 2. it will help align original prices back to rarity driven, rather than popular indemand driven (the Constellations is a classic case of this). 3. it will give the chance to novice collectors to have lookalikes of the records they love, but can no longer afford (no fault of their own). 4. too bad for branded reissue labels let them EARN their money and TAKE SOME RISK, through digging deeper into the unissued vaults. I dont agree with playing from CD, I think rare soul means rare soul. I do think that CD singles with a scanned original label are a good idea going forward for the novice collector. Pressings are part of our scene, we should just let it be. However, counterfieting using original stamping plates, old melted vinyl and original label plates are not lookalikes they are counterfiets and should be treated in the same way as any money counterfieting operation.
Last comment, those people behind the legal reissue labels taking the higher morale ground had better do 2 things...
1. look back into their past and stop throwing stones.
2. stop trying to lobby the masses about ethics, theyre in it for purely selfish financial reasons themselves. Make no mistake about that. Now, I bloody mean it when I say those in glass houses shouldnt throw stones... Im serious!! By the way,..... I am in no way a bootlegger or a double agenda rip off dealer. I am infact a serious collector of original rare soul. But,... I do hate hypocracy, its so unsoulful !!!

Dublin "Your Too Darn Soulful"
Tuesday of this week I called Karl Rhodes to make arrangements to meet up to go to Camel on Friday, change of plans Karl said we are now going to Dublin to Sleepless Nights, got flights for twenty quid he says fancy it? Can’t wait says I, Thursday evening I get a call from Karl change of plan! Shit I’m thinking no Dublin, flights fallen through but we are now going on the boat from Holyhead, ten pound return we sail at 8.15pm, in Dublin for 10pm RESULT say I as I put the phone down and start practising the hornpipe Well Friday night we land in Dublin crossing was a breeze get taxi "Where you of to folks?" Doyle’s Bar please we reply "."Which one? Blank expressions all round "Do you know how many bars in Dublin are called feckin Doyle’s? Clam down Seamus, one quick phone call later Fleet Street please, Grand says Seamus. Up two Flights of stairs and we are in, welcomed by Danny Duggan the promoter of Sleepless Nights. Turn left to put our coats down and who do we see but the North Wales Mafia, I swear if they held a soul night on the dark side of the Moon these guys would be their an hour before the rest of us, these guys really are the foot soldiers of the soul scene they are everywhere!
Well the venue is a room above a bar in the centre of the city what struck me first was how young the crowd was more than half of them were nineteen to early twenty’s this I found a refreshing change, I stood there in awe thinking yes we can bring the younger element in to this wonderful scene of ours the proof was in front of me, all be it there was only thirty or so younger guys and girls there it’s a start. Well what about the DJ line up, well when we landed a young lad called Pip was on and I was impressed, see a bright future ahead, next up Danny Duggan this guy worked the dance floor really well with some quality tunes, he knows his stuff I think he would go down well in Manchester, well next up Steve Thomas played an awesome set, I think Steve is one of the best DJ’s in the UK at the moment and I’ve seen him play three times in the last month each time I thought he could not top the last set, how wrong I was.
By the time the last DJ came on I had taken one to many of the black stuff so I did not catch his name (sorry) the dance floor stayed busy so I can only say a job well done. Well is Sleepless Nights worth a look? Yes, because you won’t find a friendlier crowd. Yes, because the music is Quality. And Yes because its only ten quid on the boat, well worth a look Danny and the gang thanks for a good night Cheers Chris Waterman

Randy - This Thing Of Ours

On Sunday afternoon I lost one of my best friends. For a man who led such a rich, varied and, at times, indulgent life, anything less than a ‘trilogy’ would be an injustice... but i’ll save that job to the more eloquent and qualified of his pals. For me, a good enough place to start is the day I met him in 1998. Sitting across from me in a cafe one sunny morning after the 100 Club, he asked if I spoke Spanish and if so, could I translate an article that had been written in a Spanish soul fanzine. I laughed in genuine disbelief that this ole chancer was the Randy Cozens who I’d heard so much about. The very same one whose article on Paul Weller had upset me at the age of 9! (... but that’s another story).
To cut a long day short, our friendship was sealed over several bottles of red wine as we spent the next 16 hours discussing his four great passions - Music, Mods, Maxine and the Mafia,...oh, and arguing whose turn it was to put on the next record. A moment that seems all the more poinient now was the pair of us sitting in floods of tears listening to Doris Troy’s “Somewhere along the way”... sentimental drunks to the end! Thankfully the rest of the day and the years to follow were far outweighed with tears of laughter. I won’t deny that many on the scene were wary of Randy. He could be down right stubborn and fiery at times; and never suffered fools gladly. However, to those who didn’t know him, it’s impossible to convey in words the impact that he had on the lives of those he did allow into his heart. I spent my last evening with Randy just before the Cleethorpes Weekender, doing what we always did best together, giggling and playing records... only on this occasion it also involved us subjecting Ady to an hour long lecture on our favourite ‘enders’; some of which I have infront of me now... Brenda Holloway’s ‘I will always love you’, Lou Johnson’s ‘It ain’t no use’, Theola Kilgore’s ‘ I can’t stand it’ and Coco Cozenza’s ultimate ender - Arthur Alexander’s ‘I need you baby’. Despite the emotional rawness of the songs and indeed the occasion, Randy was reflective in an very positive and upbeat way. Friends can take comfort from the fact that he truly LIVED his life and did it his way - right to the end. The funeral will take place this Friday, 20th June. Meeting at the White Horse Pub at the top of Chase Road, Southgate N14 from 2pm onwards. And then New Southgate Crematorium (Brunswick Park Road N11) for 3.30pm
As a celebration of his live, Randys family still wish the Southgate all-dayer to go ahead at The Rising Sun on the 28th June. --------------

Weekend just gone and one before ... short sharp shock

Odds and Sods from last two weekends

Short - content Sharp - errrr... humour Shock - more to come

Heard Friday at Lowton was a good one, reports say hot hot hot, a good crowd in, top sounds in the main hall, likes of Mick H causing rare soul mayhem, while likes of Roger Banks and Carl Willingham being just some of those doing top things in the RnB room. Saturday saw us out to the land of Joey D with a visit to that event in the village called Caers.... near Hope near Wrexham. Had a most enjoyable time at the Soul Nite there run by Rob Lloyd. Soul Nation C4 Tue 17 June

Soul Nation DJ Trevor Nelson takes us on a personal journey of Soul
Channel 4 Tuesday 17 June 11.10pm 2003
Soul Nation You Know You Got Soul
In this three-part series, DJ Trevor Nelson takes us on a personal journey, mining his own past as well as 50 years of underground culture, to present his take on how Soul has influenced Britain, and how Britain has in turn contributed to the history of R&B. In the first programme, Trevor explores how Britain first fell in love with R&B - much to the dismay of the authorities - and how white kids fought to keep it alive through the 70s Northern Soul scene. But it was in London that British soul was truly born. Trevor meets many of the stars from this unique and exciting time - Hi-Tension, India Irie, Norman Jay and Imagination's Lee John, the people who helped create a new era in British music.
Programme two - describes Jazz Funk and the Southern Soul underground, a scene that produced the first wave of UK soul stars in the early 80s and the warehouse stars (most notably Soul II Soul) at the end of the decade. Trevor talks to pivotal figures such as Jazzy B, Robert Elms, Mick Hucknall and Pete Waterman - and reflects on how an illegal network of pirate radio stations and warehouse parties was responsible for keeping black music alive in Britain until its eventual crossover ten years ago.
In the final programme, Trevor charts British Soul's move to dominate the mainstream in the 1990s: the new record labels, the first million pound contracts, the false dawn of Nu Soul, the rebirth of pirate radio and British R&B's emerging identity as UK Garage. In conversation with stars such as Ms Dynamite, Craig David and So Solid Crew he explores how, thanks to the dance revolution of the last 15 years, British urban music is now the sound of multicultural Britain made flesh.

Home Made CDs Is Totally Wrong.

Hello All,

HOME MADE CDS IS TOTALLY WRONG.

Recently i have noticed several so called soul fans selling home made/pc burnt bootleg cds of current reissue product at a few venues, now this is totally out of order and these people should be at the very least named and shamed and at worst be kicked out of the venues with there so called cds close behind them or up their bottoms side ways on.
The likes of Ady Croasdell at Ace/Kent, Garry J.Cape and John Anderson at Grapevine 2000, Tim Brown/Kevin Roberts at Goldmine/Soul Supply, the people at Universal and numerous other reissue labels spend a great deal of time, effort and money to lease the tracks, compile and manufacture legal well put together compilations so why should certain little shits profit from other peoples dedicated and hard work, it makes me sick!!!!!!!!!! They are stealing from not only the record companies but also from the artists, writers, arrangers, session players, lable owners infact the whole of the music and entertainment industry.

Sure the odd cd burn goes on for friends but even that is wrong. Aso the people that are buying these things are as much at fault as the bootleggers and should perhaps think of what they are doing before they hand over the cash, christ! what does a cd cost £11.99 or less as many northern compilations are priced in the budget market at £7.99 or less. The music industry as a whole is suffering but at least major artists such as The Beatles,Stones etc. can swallow the loss of a lesser kick back from sales but the small mom and pop soul lable owners are getting screwed again second time around. One or two venues have blocked these people selling their nasty little bootlegs which is fantastic but this rule should apply everywhere and i hope in time that the demand and sale of straight cd bootlegs will stop and these otherwise souless leaches will stop making large amounts of cash on a weekly basis. Dont question this as it is totally wrong and believe me ive bitten my bottom lip several times over the past few weeks not to challenge one particular chap as ive been advised not to get involved as there are ways, means and people to take care of this, but enough is enough so you know who you are you know who I am stop now or suffer possible litigation or worse, in a very short space of time the name and shame ethic will apply in all the soul publications and on the net. I know you can pretty much get a copy of most forms of music and entertainment on a copy/homemade video,DVD etc. even million dollar Hollywood movies often find their way onto the streets prior to cinama release but that dont make it right, bootlegging is bootlegging be it a northern cd or a copy bottle of french perfume this seems to be a huge criminal industry and the home made northern cds are a part of this terrible crime.

We need to pull together on this and shut these muppets down, we have soild proof of transactions on film and this will be passed onto very interested parties at all the companies whos product is being lifted. Still half the people doing this have no respect for the scene they claim to be part of, personally i would ban them for life from all venues, and phone the BPI and insist they take legal action take them to court and give them a huge fine then some of the money might find its way back to the talent. Bootlegs have been around since the year dot on the northern scene often over the years supplying a demand for the records to the masses but its never been right or legal simply a way for chancers to make a fast buck and the current abuse of cd burning is i guess a follow on from these traditions, perhaps the fault of todays tecnology as its so easy to do, pretty much all PCs have a cd burner now in the package but just because its there you should not abuse this in house pressing plant to profit. Keep it real - Mark Bicknell.

Bootlegs for profit - No Bootlegs for friends - I always buy legit stuff but gotta add cant see nowt wrong with tape/cd swaps amongst friends, the stuff I get to hear from these "bootlegs" you cant always get on shop bought CDs. By the way, Ive taken full advantage of "Andys Records" closing down sale discount of 60% on their soul CDs. Closing sale or not theyll still be making a profit on all sales, so just how much does go the artist and how much does the fat cat record/publishing comapany get. I know its more than the artist would get from the blatent CD bootlegger, but to be honest I think I resent those fat cats more than some saddo bootlegger, who we can give short shrift to. The fat cats, well their omnipotent!!!!

Guest Posted: 2003/10/17 16:45 Updated: 2003/10/17 16:45 Re: Pirate Cds- Have Your say! Oh come on! I bought a copy of The Seven Souls for 450 quid recently - do you think any of the artists will get a cut of that? If people like vinyl then theyll buy vinyl - getting tunes on CD are a good way of feeding the vinyl market and ensuring that people who have records for sale can realise the ridiculous prices that many of us are (stupidly I admit) prepared to pay. Theres no threat here - except perhaps to your snobbery and elitism because joe bloggs from Brighouse can get access to your tunes and isnt compelled to kow tow to a DJ. Have you ever recorded a radio show? Ever played an acetate?

Guest Posted: 2003/10/18 16:06 Updated: 2003/10/18 16:06 Re: Pirate Cds- Have Your say! To the guy above - spot on sir. Just think as well. Those white demos everyone seems to love are clearly marked NOT FOR SALE - so it was illegal to sell those in the first place, so once theyve left the radio station they were intended for arent they really bootlegs too? Also arent Kent, Goldmine et al being badly hurt by the attitude that "CDs/reissues are 2nd reate" promoted by the original label jihad? Wouldnt Goldmine Sevens and Grapevine 2k sell a lot more if they were considered acceptable DJ tools?

Guest Posted: 2003/10/18 16:11 Updated: 2003/10/18 16:11 Re: Pirate Cds- Have Your say! what a load of bollocks wise up francis bootlegs have never been accepted as "acceptable dj tools" on the northern scene mike- Posted: 2003/10/18 16:39 Updated: 2003/10/18 16:39 team member Joined: 2002/8/26 From: Posts: 2244 read the original post again Think that over half the posts on here have took Mark Bs post the wrong way Read it again and you will see that it is "against" the bootlegging of "offical" cds, ie the straight forward copying of legitimate cds that the artists/writers etc should get a cut of the sales.

Guest Posted: 2003/11/5 15:17 Updated: 2003/11/5 15:17 Re: read the original post again I agree re Ady Croasdell and Kent who certainly do things the bright way. But I would be interested to know whether all of the Goldmine CDs pay royalties to the artists. How many original artists have I met this year? One. How many times have their records been used on Goldmine CDs? Twice. How many times have they received royalties? Er...never. Frankly, this is po-faced shite. Well said to all the people who remarked on the fact that the records themselves sell for inflated prices set by a market which is largely unknown to the writers and artists. When you sell a 45 on ebay for £200, how much do you send back to the artist, Mark?

I still get given tapes and although I grimmace at the very thought of tapes they are still a popular format amongst older people. I prefer CDs and digital formats. Yes, I will copy CDs for someone and hope that they enjoy it as much as I. Most of the music I copy will be born from original vinyl so the quality is far from acceptable. Manufactured CDs are of a better quality - I own many. People will still buy either the vinyl or the original cd when when really like something. Its natural to want to have something for free and no matter how much you whinge or moan, or belittle those that do it, it shall still carry on. For me, what matters is that this genre lives and continues. If you have the original vinyl then no matter how many bootlegs or copy cds are generated... you still own the most important peg in the board. Dont you? I have no qualms in sharing music digitally... afterall, if it were not for the interenet, where on earth would the soul scene be now? No where near the surface as it enjoys at this very moment thats for sure. I am listening right now to a tape compiled for me of 60s rarities... the sound is terrible! Nothing SoundForge cant sort out. Those who hold the original recordings have one-upmanship on those who dont. Smile with that contention. What is wrong though is those who release tracks promising a one off rarity when in fact its just a compiled load of bollocks in some off street recording studio claiming it to be something it just aint Karen x

Might be a bit late in replying to this comment but I think it is a bit rich of Mark. I dont agree with selling own made cds either but lets be honest does he really think that quoting people like K. Roberts and the like is really gonna change peoples minds?. Ive been on the Northern scene since 71 and these are the people who (some anyway) were covering their precious records to hide the true identity of many a soul artist and some are still doing it today. lets remember, back then the records were just about, at the most ten years old and many new? discoveries were up todate and often just 1 or 2 years old. The artists in many cases were very much alive and could have benifited from royalties, J. J. Barnes for instance was found working in a car factory i believe. No I dont agree with it but these guys and the rest should remember that what comes around goes around. "Before youn take the mote from your brothers eye, take the plank out of your own"

I see where Mark is coming from, good lord i have bought just about every Ady Croadsell Kent release, but i make a point off never duplicating anything that i dont own on original vinyl. Dont know where that puts me in this argument, but hell ill always do tapes for mates. Brett Franklin Sheffield

Catch Up - Cds, Spain, Plinston and more

Hi all,

Seems like my comments on bootleg homemade cds has struck a nerve or two, infact one of these guys even tried to say hello to me at a recent allnighter in the north west so the message is out there i just hope it sinks in. Remember home made cds are totally wrong and should be stamped out by whatever means it takes, i will challenge anyone who says its ok and wish to make it known that that this has to STOP now.

Soulful Salou 2004 update........................ Soulful Salou 2004 is taking shape and there seems to be a lot of interest on this one, i have had several emails from people who fancy a quality week in Spain and i hope the project will go ahead. Already Guy Hennigan has said he would love to DJ at the event which is fantastic and we are working towards inviting a few more top names from the UK and some of The Spanish top boys which will give it an international flava. The basic package for self catering should be around £260.00 per person and approx £360.00 for half board which is fantastic value, however basically the more people who go the cheaper it will be based on a large group block booking with our tour operator. Children are welcome at a lesser rate up to 16 years of age. We are starting to put this together and the main advertising and information sheets will be hitting all the clubs over the next few weeks so watch out for these or you can contact us on 0161 330 6267 or email bicknellmark@aol.com Salou is just about as good as it gets, a really fantastic place to have fun,sun and now some soul so if interested please feel free to contact us.

Looking forward to the huge Plinston anniversary event with The Big O and all the gang in September, sounds and looks like a fantastic set up and im looking forward to doing both the main Northern room and also The Mojo RnB room, listen out for a Plinston special coming up on my Solar Radio show over the next few weeks. Its so cool right now for me on the DJ front and is still a joy to be asked to do events nationwide, Richard Searling has invited me to guest at the August Manchester Ritz and wants me to do another Detroit/Chicago spot which always seems to go down well.

More gigs to follow in Hinckley,Edinburgh with fellow Solar presenter Andy Davis, Bisley later on in the year and many more, so its nice to still be out there doing and to be honest when you have records as good as mine so i should be too..........lol lol.

Next time out in here i will run a few tunes by you and take a look at some new cds etc. all the best - mark bicknell.

Shrine: The Alternative Theory

Shrine - a view from the other side
After posting Andy Rix's original version sleeve notes from the kent cd, andrew hamilton got in touch, and gave this other view on one of the legendary northern labels, andrew h hailing from cleveland USA is a regular contributor to mags such as skm, a reviewer of soul cds for many outlets, has been involved on the soul recording side his name appears on many soul sides as writing credits, and is a main fighter in raising american awareness on soul singers who apart from regonition by uk soul fans, have largely been ignored
I had to write you after reading the Eddie Singleton/Shrine story. I found it informative and interesting but full of fantasy. Dont get me wrong I love reading these type stories. Its just that Singleton tries to make Shrine seem like a big deal when in fact it was colossal bust. I would love to see evidence of Shrines so called "local hits," in the Tri-State area, some radio survey charts or something, the fact that Eddie stated he pressed up 2,500 copies of each release. Where did they go? Surely not to any jocks in Cleveland; no Shrine recording ever got played in this area, not even on the weekend and college stations. I doubt very seriously if they made any type of impression in the D.C./Baltimore area. The building that warehoused some Shrine recordings did indeed go up in flames. Ive heard most of the Shrine material and to be blunt the stuff was weak compared to what other labels were putting out at that time. Even payola wouldnt have help much, they simply werent in the pocket.
They are interesting to listen to now on tape and CD, but have you ever heard a Shrine 45? Hell, most people have never even seen one. The only person who went on to become something from Shrine was Keni St. Lewis, who later wrote for the Sylvers, the Jacksons, Tavares, and others. How do you think Motowns Quality Control department would have rated the Shrine Recordings? My guess is most would still be unreleased and buried ass-deep in a vault somewhere. But this is the beauty of Northern Soul and old obscure tracks, the story behind the record is always more interesting than the record itself. Berry or Nat Tarnapol didnt have to put any barriers up to stifled Shrine. Shrine stifled itself. Listen to what was being released at that time then listen to the Shrine stuff. Which would you buy? If you were a DJ, which would you play? Ive talked to numerous people in the D. C./Baltimore area who have never heard of Shrine, it artists, or recall hearing any of the songs on the radio.
Im talking about people age 40 to 60. Which isnt saying much cause most Clevelanders have never heard of Jessie Fisher, Lou Ragland, Johnny Moore, Cleveland Robinson, the Soul Notes, Fred Towles, the Sensations, and numerous others. Thank you Lord for not making me a music frontrunner, I love the experience of picking up the old and obscure at flea markets or second hand stores and discovering sounds I enjoy, admiring the label, and checking the writers and producers credits.
Its a rush Ill continue to seek til the day I die.
Andrew Hamilton

To recap: Saturday July 28th at Ye Olde Rising Sun in Chase Side, Southgate, London N14 is the venue for 13 hours of across the board SOUL from 12pm-1am with a line-up that is sexier than the girls from the Bada-Bing Club doing the wild thing with each other....Taffy, Dave Greenhill, Stuart Russell, Itchycoo Mark, Ady Croasdell, Steve Gaunori, Roger Stewart, Chris Forest, Marco, Ion, Rob Holmes, Tony Smith, Mick Smith, Jo Wallace, TheBigO, Dave Greet, Mike Ritson, John Farrel, Ivor Jones, Teff, Bevy, Valatones Johnny T and Trixster - spinning Northern, Modern, Crossover, R&B.

This is a free event in aid of raising funds, at Randy Cozens (the main man behind Soulgate events) request, for the Royal Marsden Hospital and in all likelyhood will be the last event under the This Thing Of Ours banner after 18 glorious years. A full house is expected as always and another fantastic day/night looks set to be in store. All are welcome to eperience the magic and to see why this is always a MUST event on the London soul scene.

If that wasnt enough there is also the chance to do a spot of venue hopping as Johnny Ts Valatone night is also on and there is the 100 Club Allnighter on straight after to carry on the good times.

Ye Olde Rising Sun is situated right next door to the Southgate tube and a mere 10 mins straight drive from the M25, Potters Bar turning, down the A111.

Record dealers and raffle prizes are also amongst the attractions on offer but it is the unique atmosphere and the great soul sounds that really make people keep coming back again and again.
Be there!

Ritz Desboro a quick word

Vaughan from Anglesey asked me to let you know that he went to the Ritz in Desborough last Saturday - Said it was a fabulous nite and a really good venue - the crowd of about 300 were incredibly friendly - for such an out of the way place he was stunned to see so many people there - the sounds were a broad blend of Wheel, Torch and Stafford oldies with a really buzzing R&B room upstairs. Considering that there were about 4 other events on within an hours drive it was astonishing to see such a good turnout. Karl the organizer did a great job.

Many in from the Cambridge area, and he tells me that that Monkey is well know down there - in fact they were keen to know more about the next summer Monkey all-nighter.
Vaughan travels a lot and said that if is in the area again he would definitely go again - one to recommend if you are in the area.........

best regards

Twisted Wheel - Articles, photos, flyers and cufflinks

Maybe of interest to some so thought pass on details
First the informative manchesterbeat site has a great page featuring photos, flyers and cufflinks all that sort of thing worth a visit at

Another article on Wheel, from its 40th anniversary and different from ones on Manchesteronline goes something like
LET’S TWIST AGAIN Words: Richard Hector-Jones
Precursor to the Wigan Casino, the seminal Twisted Wheel club is 40 years young this weekend. The other famous club on Whitworth Street gets all misty-eyed Traditionally it’s always believed that history is written by the winners, which makes any history an act of subjective rewriting. Manchester’s Twisted Wheel club, the legendary ‘60s soul club, the spot where the phrase northern soul was actually coined, proves this theory to be not entirely correct. “The reason The Twisted Wheel has never received...................

Texas Funk

Here is an interesting story (from the Austin Chronicle) about how 60s TEXAS FUNK is making an improbable comeback:
Texas funk comp release from  London- based Jazzman Records featured in Austin Chronicle
Clip below...
Sometimes you have to cross an ocean to find something good in your own back yard. Such is the case with Texas Funk, released last fall on London- based Jazzman Records. Archiving 20 obscure Lone Star funk sides (and one from nearby Shreveport) from the late Sixties and early Seventies, Texas Funk unearths a largely unknown stratum of Texas music history. Funk sprouted forth as an adjunct to Southern soul in the mid-Sixties with James Brown hits like "Papas Got a Brand New Bag." Down in New Orleans, the Meters tapped the essential groove with polyrhythmic exercises like "Sophisticated Cissy," while in Houston, Archie Bell & the Drells gave lessons on a new dance called the "Tighten Up." Although it was the T.S.U. Toronados and not the Drells backing Bell on the actual record, "Tighten Up" topped both the pop and R&B charts in 1968.

Northern Soul The Theme Park!!! UPDATED

Well it just had to happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Northern Soul The Theme Park is on its way and will be built on the original Casino site in Wigan, this will include a total rebuild of the original building plus a whole host of special attractions within this multi million pound project..........the site will have it all such as retro nostalgia roller coasters which will transport you back to September 23rd 1973 with an audio visual blow your mind journey that you can relive again and again, soak up the commercial bullshit of how good it was then where some egos were far more important than the music and all was well in the mind of the three before eight master................. Have your photo taken dressed in authentic Northern Soul fashion with a famous celebrity of the day, record your very own Northern Soul record and visit the huge gift shop packed to the rafters with nasty cheap tacky crap which includes, clocks, mugs, t - shirts, key rings, coasters, jackets, badges, pens, action figures and tons more items which have sod all to do with the music but make the fat cats richer. The theme park will im sure be a big success and very much cement the Northern Soul scene as a branded monster, i feel however that it will be a short lived attraction as the real people of the scene would rather champion the music and keep it real. Northern Soul The Theme Park will go the way of the ill fated Mr Blobby Land in Morcambe some years ago as even the great Noel Edmonds could not save that one......... Perhaps Circus would be a better way to sum up this current trend of total commercial overkill, how much more abuse can one scene take, bootlegs, tacky crap, branded Northern Soul is killing the very core of what otherwise should be pure and about the music, collecting, playing, dancing and enjoying rare hard to find records which should be enough and not a constant diet of the same old crap and we want your money all of it and now fuck off ethic........ This scene is being fucked every which way at the present time and in time the whole sad bubble is going to burst as it did in the early 80s except this time there will be no Stafford to pick up the pieces and then where will we be. I frankly dont care of the reaction my comments will generate as for far too long nothing has been said of the way things are right now, there are many people, promoters, DJs, collectors etc. who really care about this scene with a passion and many have simply had enough of all the bull shit, why should we stand by and watch the very life blood of this scene drain away into nothing, the commercial side of Northern Soul today is killing it slowly, fuck Chicken I would sooner go for the steak, I think you will take my point. ITS A BEAUTIFUL SCENE AND WE SHOULD ALL BE PROUD OF IT, TREASURE IT AND MOVE FORWARD,DEVELOP AND GROW NOT STAND STILL IN SOME FUCKING RETRO TIME WARP AND BE SPOON FED SECOND CLASS VERSIONS OF THE GREATEST SCENE IN THE WORLD. ITS 2003 NOT 1976, RIP WIGAN CASINO, LONG LIVE THE RARE NORTHERN SOUL SCENE. see you on the big dipper.........tickets please................................................................................ Keep it real - Mark Bicknell.

 Part 2 added

Further to my recent Northern Soul The Theme Park item - please note this is not an actual review or preview of any current venue, its more an overview of the commercial abuse going on right now.......... how the hell you can brand something so beautiful and pure as rare hard to find Soul records is an insult in my book. The current overkill commercial situation on the scene is sucking it dry and I do not want to see something thats been a huge part of my life for twenty seven years totally destroyed and thrown away by people who dont have any real passion for the music and simply use it as a meal ticket and an excuse to print money and if it means going back so far underground in a sweaty small cellar club atmosphere then so be it................................. from the year dot there has always been chances on the scene who wish to exploit and profit from it so there is nothing new there, its just got totally out of control and enough is basically enough, good friends of mine have even given up attending gigs because they cant stand the bullshit anymore, its crumbling around us and we have to do something about it now before its too late. I myself take pride when im asked to DJ and as with many other people connected with the scene we do it because we care, sure I get paid for DJing and rightly so as I give it 100% everytime, I dont cheat and play bootlegs I try and keep it real. Im not pointing the finger at anyone in particular but will simply say if the shoe fits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will not be told whats good and whats not by someone else as I have my own mind so please dont spoon feed me sub standard retro crap and exspect me to say nothing ok. Should my comments be challenged then that in its self will prove my comments and observations right so there you have it, perhaps I wont be asked to DJ at certain venues because of my costic comments but to tell you the truth I would sooner not play those venues if Im not being booked on my reputation, collection and entertainment value so again not my loss is it? I praise everyone who does it right be it legal re issue of music, running a venue whatever so why should I be made to feel like jacking it all in under this monster commercial blanket at the present time, simply the music is far too good to let it all go and in time quality will win the day over pop - up watered down crap.

Keep it real - Mark Bicknell.

Re: theme park Is this a revue of the Cala Gran? Wondered when someone was going to say, "Northern soul"isnt a brand, and we arent mug punters! Someone was on here saying that the Togetherness events pulled in 6 thousand over a few week period, and was therefore a success, and completely ignored the fact that just about every facet of their organisation, and performance at these events had come in for critisicm. I cant comment on any of these recent events as I choose not to go, following well documented actions in the past. I have been to them in the past though, and found it odious to be repeatedly told, they are the BRAND LEADER??? What is all that about. If brand leader of Weekenders means a dancefloor that has to be rebuilt every few hours, or power failures, or whatever else, then I am happy going to the less commercial poorer relations where soul fans play soul records for soul fans to dance to on a floor that will still be there in a few minutes time.

The Northern Soul Theme Park You know, it took me a second read to figure out that what you said was a fantasy. This further proves your point about how something like this could actually happen. Commercialization is the enemy of anything pure or righteous. I do think that it would have been nice for an exact replica of the Casino Club to have been rebuilt, but the sad part about that is--nobody would even consider doing that unless there was money to be made. They should have done it years ago, even when northern soul wasnt extremely popular like it is now. Something like that should also be done for love of the music, not because of opportunity to make money. Im 31 and from the USA and a only a serious fan of northern soul since 1991 and I never been to the UK and got to experience the Wigan Casino, so Id like to be able to walk in there and have my own point of reference. But you know what? Life goes on, as does the scene, and I actually dont feel cheated out of anything. As long as there is a dancefloor, and a sound system with good soul sounds, Im there. From what Ive gathered from reading, talking to people and from my own experiences, northern soul has survived because of smaller local venues, people turning on others to the music, availability of legitimate reissues and so on. The true soul fans uphold the strong sense of comraderie and stick true to the music. I had the pleasure of playing northern soul at a scooter rally in Las Vegas back February to mostly people from the UK, and they showed me immense respect and treated me as one of their own. This furthered my beliefs in how pure it can be. This situation could have happened anywhere; the music and the people kept it real and pure. I think anybody who considers him/herself a true northern soul fan will support me in saying he/she would rather spend the evening at an ill attended local soul event with a small group of close friends with a quality sound system, rather than go to a large event with lots of people that dont respect what theyre experiencing. I should know this because I DJ soul nights in Baltimore, MD(USA) and make little to no money and sometimes Im the only one on the dancefloor, and thats still not a complete failure to me. Ill continue to do it whenever I want, even knowing that people may not come. True soul fans will agree. With all of that said, I would hate to see a good and positive thing like this destroyed by commercialism and put into the wrong hands. As far as the KFC ads, they do the same kind of shit in the US with even more common pieces of music. At least a better song comes on the TV, but by the same token it must hurt even more when it does come on, so I really understand your point. Ill be coming to Cleethorpes in June of 04 for the first time. It will also be my first time in the UK. As much as Im filled with anticipation and excitement about coming to a large scale proper UK soul event, Im sure that my most meaningful moments will be meeting some great people who love this stuff just as much as me. Im on your side, Mark. Well put about everything you said. Best, Jason (Jazzy Jas) KTF

as said great stuff, heres a few words from alan on where hes from and what hes up to:
"ive been dj-ing and running clubs since the early 80s my first dj stint being at the beat route soul a go go nite in 1980, started to collect soul as well as my first musical love reggae and ska. Dj-ed at  most london mod clubs thru that period as well as running the successful reggae and ska nites at the penny black, sols arms and dublin castle in camden.
Irish greg and i got together to put on a do where we could have a good dance and enjoy great music and the capitol soul club was born, unfortunately we lost the bar shoreditch after eight great months, we then teamed up with mr jahans our fantastic promoter to start up the cap soul at
the dome which is going from strength to strength. MY love for r&b shows in my sets but im not averse to a stomper or 2.

My Proposal - Soul inc - Coconut Groove
The best record Ive heard in the last decade or so without a doubt. It
features Cecil Washington (who also penned it) and the label shares the same
address details as Prophonics! An uptempo mover with several breaks and a
key change, but the vocals really steal the show - pure magic. Yes, its
bloody rare - thats life!?
This Ones For You My Love - Benny Spellman - Alon
This is my favourite spin at present, and very reminiscent of the early 80s
over played but much loved "Fortune Teller". This track rattles along and
features many fine piano breaks from New Orleans hero Allen Toussaint. It
took me many years to track down a copy (actually bought it for the other
side, which is also great Northern!), but I have no doubt that more copies
will eventually surface. When this happens the record could become a monster
tune across the land.
Just Cant Let It Ride - Dexter Manley - cover up
Ady Croasdell gave this one six months of 100 Club turntable action a few
years back, before it "disappeared" into my collection! Its the same song
as John DAndrea on MGM, but "Dexters" version is more menacing, with its
good strong brass work and organ breathing away. I must start playing this
at the Dome....remind me someone!
The Greatest Story Ever Told - Billy Arnell - cover up
A real grower that may take a couple of plays before it grabs you, put give
it a chance! Some have said that its the best thing theyve heard in years,
with its nagging beat, "tree chopping" guitar and swirling organ. Never
seen another copy apart from my one.

6 Throbbing tracks courtesy of the hitman
heres a full strength brew from the hitman with a selection of classy
movers, just hit the stream to hear
theres a new thing-dean and damons cover
getting things off to a flying start - uptempo time

from a flyer to a gritty mover, with a plea from the porch
black is beautifull - trinikas
keeping the pace, the trinikas with a great piece of uptempo anthem
i need a man - precious three
time for a change nah.. more in the same vein, as the precious three tell us what they want
little john-just wait and see-gogate
once covered as jimmy raye at stafford, more grit in a stop start fly style

Pete C Soul session

Pete Coulson DJ and mag editor from up there in the northwest  is this issues featured player, hitting us with a session featuring 6 of hottest r+b tracks around, plus notes and a brief bio on where hes coming from and wheres he going. Also responsible for fanzine "northern essence". All I say is
What a way to start the new year!

Hit {here} to stream the first session,
1) joe tex - i wanna be free - dial got this courtesy of steve thomson, blew me away first time of hearing, i played it for shifty at lowton and he tells me he has now got one, typical joe tex with plenty of breaks and changes, i am always getting asked for this, a great dancer.
2) contract on love - stevie wonder - tamla i have been after a copy of this for about two years but nobody would sell me one, i eventually settled for the album which i bought of bob hinsley, about a month later i was found a copy by simon, so if anyone wants stevie wonders greatest hits i have one for sale.
3) lois blain - here i am - open-g-records this great dancer chugs along with the breaks coming via the catch in loiss voice, out of new york just wonderful soul music.
4) richard berry - have love will travel - flip i am getting lots of requests for this top dancer, out of California i suppose it could be classed as doo wop if you wanted to pigeon hole it, got this of carl willingham when he acquired the demo, he wont have an issue in the house if he can get the demo, and the bugger has most things on demo, mostly white of course.
5) carol fran - knock knock - excello i first heard this about six months ago on a tape and had to have one, trouble was nobody had heard of it. i mentioned it to ian cunliffe and lo and behold he turned on up within a couple of months, we are not worthy ian, brilliant r&b with a distinctive start.
6) barbara lynn - second fiddle girl - jamie this was an unknown barbara lynn track to me, my good mate hoss played this to me at my house after a niter and it blew me away. always one of my favourite artists due to the diversity of her music. i had the privilege of meeting her and interviewing her for my magazine northern essence (plug) at last years cala gran and the lady is just that, one of the nicest most unassuming people i have ever met.
about me i started on the northern soul scene about 1968 when i first went to the twisted wheel in manchester, i was a regular there until it finished and then went to the blackpool mecca until i was married and then all things have to change. i was off the scene then until about seven years ago, now with my second wife viv we found that the scene was thriving more than when i left it. after our fist soul night we were hooked and have not looked back since, i think we have made up for those lost years a hundred times over since we started back, in fact it has virtualy taken over our lives. i have been involved in most aspects of the scene, as a promoter, dj and editor of my own fanzine northern essence, the mag has been great for me, i have met so many of the artists i have admired over the years, , to name a few, barbara lynn, eddie holman, jerry williams, terry callier and dean courtney and they have all been such nice people, just like most people on the scene. the great thing about the scene IS the people, we have made so many real friends from all over the country and making new ones every week, yes the music is important but if you are progressive thinking and you go out every weekend then you are going to have a lot of dissapointing nights if you do not put the company you are with first, then if you get a good night s music as well its a bonus. if you like the tunes mike has put on his site you can hear them and more like them every month at lowton civic hall where i am resident in the r&b room along with regulars carl willingham, roger banks and malc worsley plus guests. the next one is friday 8th december, by the way i will also be djing in the main room that night, my next few dates this month are at the savoy hotel in blackpool on saturday december 22nd, bolton anglers club on boxing night, the white hart in farnworth december 27th and again at lowton on new years eve.

ok thats that, know cynics will say recycling but as always reply is **** em,  just looking at dates and the notes and of course the sounds, and what Isee  make it worthwhile to me, so if wanna hear any of them again just let us know which and will dig deep.

All Eras room at the last Monkey

A quick post on the goings on,in the All Eras room at last Monkey.
Chico kicked off with an early doors set, room fairly quiet(why is it modern rooms always slow to pick up?wherever you go!)I was on at 9.30,with the room still fairly quiet it was a good chance to kick off with a couple of mid tempo things.(see my playlist)Halfway through my set room started to fill up and so did the dancefloor,Chico took over from my myself, and kept the dancefloor busy with some nice contempary tunes.
Paul Baldwin picked the tempo up with his usual Soulful garage set.
Mark S finished off with a lovely 70s set, some rare stuff getting played.
A good night, numbers up from last time, good dancefloor reaction and positive feedback too.
Check out the next one
Cheers

Soul In The City All - Dayer - Dave G

26th May 2003 Soul In The City Charity All- Dayer That time of the year again but a bit of a difference this time. Fed up of waiting for a dance floor to be installed in our usual venue & facing the unenviable task of getting people to dance on carpet we put our heads together&decided to ask Johnnie T.if he fancied putting on a joint SITC/Valatone Dayer at the St Aloysious club, home to Johnnies 100 club warm up. In the event he was going to be away that weekend but was happy to have us using the venue especially as we had decided to make it a charity bash, the charity being London's Guy's Hospitals childrens renal unit. Having secured the venue we then managed to bring in Father&Son duo Ady&Tommy Potts together with Steve Csordas&Peter Jay to do guest spots for us. Thanks to Peter also for providing the equipment for the day. As we all know Bank Holiday weather is always crap,so people will always want something to do to take their minds off the rain etc. So to wake up to sunshine was mildly worrying , by mid day the sun was blazing&you wonder if you've been bad in a previous life ! Anyway get to the venue on time for once, to find Peter well on the way to sorting the equipment&a few tweaks later by 3pm the doors were open&we were away with yours truly kicking off our 3rd all dayer with April May&June - He Went Away on RCA. A few trickled through the door early on, Simon&Steve&ladies from the south coast, regular SITC supporters Stubbsy, Andy&Geoff&various others who wanted to watch Wolves smash Sheff Utd. on the big screen but a bit of a quiet start. A group actually came in to explain that they would be back later but it was such a lovely day outside they were going to go sit in the sun&have a few beers first!. Janet Murray danced to just about every record played on a very sticky dance floor&I worried about how many were going to turn up (Now there's a surprise!) A slow start but good music from all&from about 7pm people started piling in. Thanks to Ady&Tommy who despite being at the Ritz All Niter&suffering from Motorway disentry managed to get down&provide two fantastic sets. Thanks also to our other guests Steve&Peter for their brilliant sets. The sticky floor was proving to be a bugger so despite the posters on the walls "warning"against, a courier was sent out for talc &oh did that liven up proceedings ! The floor started to fill&stayed that way for the rest of the night. In the end a brilliant day. Thanks to our guests plus regular DJ's Martin Thomson, Paul McKay&myself Dave Greenhill. After paying for the hire of the venue we were able to give Guys hospital £260 A big thanks from SITC for everyone supporting this&a big thanks from me to Randy&Karen for coming along. Dave Godin in Llandudno - Blues and Soul Issue 82 -1972

Site note article updated 2023 , text format added.
Dave Godin column including his account of visiting Paynes Cafe Royal while on holiday in Llandudno back in 1972
As you can read part of the article features his account of a holiday visit to Llandudno where he stumbles across Paynes weekly event.
Dave Godin in Llandudno - Blues and Soul Issue 82 -1972
Easter this year came as a chance to escape the City for a few days,  and so I repaired to Llandudno m North Wales for a much needed rest and recuperation. There. I thought. I shall be isolated from the things which seem to take up so much of my time- Soul, and Blessed Celluloid.
However, I was to be proven happily wrong on the Soul score at least, because on the train leaving London I started to read the new issue of "Blues & Soul" which l'd not yet had time to examine fully, and there was an advert for the Soul disco at Llandudno's Cafe Royal! It was too good a co-incidence to pass up!
The Cafe Royal (rather like the vegetarian guest house I was staving at) is rather faded and has obviously seen better days. Gone are the idyllic afternoons when the bright young things of the town would take afternoon tea with their chaperones and dance to a string quartet set in palms and aspidistras whilst waitresses dressed in black with lace aprons served tea-cakes and sandwiches. The whole décor is like a luxurious chocolate box, and in the ceiling above the dance floor a huge oval opening would have allowed others to sit and watch the dancers below them.
Had the staid patrons of The Cafe Royal at the turn of the century seen Saturday night's carryings-on, they'd pass right out. Loud, vibrant and dynamic Soul sounds flooded the chandeliers and cherubs, and the dance floor was given over to young people letting it all hang out '72-style!
The DJ Dick Collins. has a good collection of favourites old and new, and he certainly shuffled them with skill and agility. But to create any sort of a good disco, not only do you need a good DJ, but you also need the right people, and although perhaps not so numerous as in other regions, the Soul clan of Llandudno certainly know their stuff. People like Dave Gillett who is cool and together and who is as into Soul as anyone I've ever met. He lives Soul, and more importantly, he feels it. Then there was Mally Davies who is so full of life and vitality and a generous enthusiasm that positively bubbles all around him. Then Lawrence Jones who gets about all over the place in his pursuit of good Soul, and who was dancing on the floor until the very end. Then there was king of the back-drops John Roberts bringing the dancing styles of The Wheel into the place with an athleticism and speed that would surely win him a prize in any dance contest. And Mike Williams, and Norman Gardner, lan Howard who had travelled up from Southport with his mate and Lawrence's Linda from Betws-y-Coed, and so many others who introduced themselves and who are part of the "Blues & Soul" family.
The Cafe Royal is certainly worth a visit, and with people like these brothers and sisters helping to get it together, I think that in time it could well pass over into legend. But in any case. they're really working on it, and to each and everyone of you my personal thanks for your warm and kindly welcome.
------------------------------------
Better late than never I suppose, but one cannot help the stray cynical thought crossing one's mind when you see that Chess have at last issued Joy Lovejoy's "In Orbit". Unlike companies like Mojo, President and a few others, Chess have a poor track record of listening to what we would like to have issued, and so don't for one second think that Joy Lovejoy's super side has been issued in order to please us. or because Chess over here have any love for Soul music. It's been issued to make money, pure and simple, an accordingly I hope their opportunism is treated with the contempt it deserves. And the same applies to Probe and their Sapphires' outing.
'Keep The Faith' is a well-known expression that defies precise definition, but over the years gallant little President have done just that. and now they have excelled themselves with their three-volume set "Keep The Faith" which is so good as to almost be beyond praise. What they have in fact done is select 36 of the finest sides from the President, Jay-Boy labels, and put them all together on this bargain priced LP set. Such is the quality of this collection that a mere mention of some of the titles will serve as praise and recommendation enough.
Volume One (Joy JOYS 223) has  Jackie Lee's The Shotgun & The Duck, Alvin Cash The Philly-Freeze, Terry Lindsey's li'« Over, The Olympics' Baby, Do The Philly Dog, The Belles 'Don't Pretend, and more . . .!
Volume Two has Billy Preston's BIIy's Bag, The Witches & The Warlock's Behind Locked Doors, Jackie Lee's The Duck Viola Wills' I've Got To Have All Of You, Slim Harpo's Tip On in and more... !
Volume Three (can you still take it all?) has Richard Temple's That Beatin' Rhythm, Jackie Lee's Do The Temptation Walk, Bob & Earl's Harlem Shuffle, McKinley Mitchell's The Town I Live In, Willie Parker's I Live The Life I Love, The Furys What Is Soul, Jackie Lee's Would You Believe, and more .
And everyone is a good one, and what a bargain price!  Now this really is a service to Soul people and I've just got to give an official Seal of Approval to each volume. Taken individually each LP is a stunner, but no doubt like me, you'll want to have all three. They are dripping with that uptempo super-optimistic Soul sound that signifies so much . and then some, and if you're a dancer or a dreamer, (or a bit of both) you'll find your imagination strung out over these wonderful tracks. and your heart beating along inside them.
Certainly one of the finest and most thought out compilations ever assembled, and I hope sincerely that all three albums sell by the cart load. No Soul fan should be without them, and we should all give a hearty vote of thanks to the fellows at President for getting such a super selection together. Utter brilliance so get and listen to them. The numbers of the other volumes are Joy JOYS 224 and JOYS 225. In my opinion the finest value in Soul albums of all time. So there!
Taking a leaf from Tammi Lynn's cookery page last edition, I'm tempted to concluded with my recipe for a good wholesome nut-roast but perhaps not!
Until next time then, Keep the faith (and this time President have provided all the background sounds you need), and right on brothers and sisters.

Lyric Turn-Un of the fortnight
ALL IN MY MIND
Words & Music by Brown, Johnson. Kirkland
Recorded by Maxine Brown (London-American 1960)

l think that you don't care.
And it's more than I can bear.
I don't know baby,
Maybe it's all in my mind.
I know that l've been true,
But honey, sweetie, baby,
What about you?
I don't know baby,
Maybe it's all in my mind.
We've been going steady so long.
I never dreamed you could ever do me wrong.
I knew I was yours,
And I thought you were mine.
And every little thing seemed so fine.
Darling, I hate to see,
Someone else with you,
Other than me
I don't know baby,
Maybe it's all in my mind
All in my mind. Oh yes
... I don't mean to think so mean and evil baby,
Please tell me it's all in my mind. . . .
(It seems incredible that this record is now  twelve years old, but like all true Soul classics, the passing of time does nothing to diminish its stature as the record of a certain moment in time. So perfectly does it capture the mood and spirit of the true underground minority of that time, that this is precisely why it is never mentioned by latter-day apostles of "Rock"  -they missed it, and never caught up with it, and Soul music (being much like love) is like a fried egg - it must be eaten at the time and cannot be put into a warm oven to keep for later. The melody, the arrangement were all so ahead of their time on this side that it still sounds like it was cut yesterday. That is the power and the glory of Soul which will always survive its imitators, copyists and plagiarists. And it's just another part of the dues you pay for being black... and thats a fact!

Fresh Big Daddy Blast and Update

Hi All,

Just a quick blast and update on the new Manchester Allnighter under the New Century Soul Club banner which to recap happens on Saturday December 6th 2003 at The Century House Venue, Corporation Street, Manchester. Firstly to squash any rumour out there this is not my venue i am just one of the DJs ok. Im very proud to be connected with this first class promotion as this will become one of the leading events in the country very quickly, no question of that, there is a first class attitude and commitment behind this event and every possible avenue is being covered to make it work.

This event will have it all, first class state of the art sound system, audio visual effects throughput the night, bar till 1am, ample space and record dealer area, huge dance floor, Top DJs including Carl Willingham, Karl Rhodes, Brian Rae, Dave Evison, Steve Thomas, Kev Murphy, Gary Cope, Paul Kidd, Kiddo and myself. Many Top names have been approached for future dates which will run on the last Saturday of the month throughout 2004. Promotion for this event is picking up really well - tickets are available now at £10.00 in advance - for further details contact Chris on 07989 415991 or Lee on 07973 864256 or email info@goodtymes.co.uk

Not much on for me throughout October im glad of the rest to be honest as its been pretty mad over the past couple of months DJing all over the land but i have a busy November and December coming up with spots down in Wolverhampton, Bisley and of course the New Manchester Allnighter so plenty to look forward to from behind the decks so to speak. Not been buying much record wise as its all got a bit rich for me recently the prices seem to be getting out of control day by day so ive been looking in other areas for new additions to the music collection which i dont wish to go into but just to say some of George Formbys early work was simply outstanding.

Keep it real -

Regards - Mark Bicknell.
