Inner City Soul Club Returns In A New London Venue!

We just want to thank those who have continued to support us since the creation of Inner City Soul club last March and to announce that we have moved to a new and fantastic venue in London - Duke's. The new venue is a short walk from Liverpool St. and Aldgate Stations, and is complete with a large wooden dance floor and incredible sound system.

We have a cracking line up for our next event, which will be running till 6 AM - Lars Bulnheim (flying over all the way from Hamburg), Marco Santucci and Kitch - so we hope to see some of you down there for what promises to be another night of amazing Rare Soul!

Over the past year we have had some fantastic and memorable events, with some of the best DJ’s from Europe including Edu Domingo, Laurent Reus, Malayka and Matt Fox and many others from the UK including Adam Torel, Callum Simpson, Rich Evans and the Va Va Voom boys.

As we are on the younger end of the soul spectrum (Tomas is 22 and James 29) our focus has always been on promoting an event which both appeals to dedicated soul fans but also focuses on creating an atmosphere which encourages a younger generation to enjoy this fantastic music. Consistent with this ideal we have always sought out DJ’s who we believe to be exciting and play the best across the board 60s and 70s soul records out there!

Here are the current favourite spins from the two residents to give you a flavour of the club...

James Pogson:

Ishola Muhammad — “Open Up Your Heart” (Guess)
Little Willie Johnson — “Loneliness” (Vendella’s)
John Harris and the Soul Sayers — “Hangin’ In” (Kerston)
Harvey Scales & the Seven Seas — “Trying To Survive” (Magic Touch)
Mellow Madness — “Save The Youth” (Mega)

Tomas McGrath:

The Soul Injection — “Stay Off The Moon” (Accent)
The Underground Express — “I Never Found A Girl” (U.G.E.)
Kelly & The Soul Explosions — “Talking About My Baby’s Love” (Dynamite)
Charlene & The Soul Serenaders - “Can You Win” (Volt)
Paul Burton — “So Very Hard To Make It (Without You)” (Music-Go-Round)

Once again thanks for the support!

The Guardian Does Popcorn

A look at the 'Popcorn Scene' could be read in the Guardian yesterday and while its a mainstream take it read quite well to me.
A few preview clips...
Belgium's 'Popcorn': the last underground music scene in Europe
Antwerp's answer to northern soul has a drowsy, decadent vibe and its DJs favour eclecticism, jive music and playing records at the wrong speed. Bob Stanley gets into its strange groove
... DJ plays Eartha Kitt, the Skatalites, something that sounds like a northern soul record at the wrong speed. The atmosphere is friendly but exclusive, and the musical mood dark and opulent. This is a Belgian Popcorn club.
... really do have the wrong idea about Belgium," says Bill Brewster, the author of Last Night a DJ Saved My Life. "Musically, it's been far more innovative than people give it credit for, possibly due to the push and pull of the Flemish and French split..

worth reading/watching, although like the northern scene I suspect you really need to live it to fully get it. Having said that I have come to really enjoy a lot of Popcorn tunes in the last 15 years or so.

The very first Manchester European Soul weekender started off with a popcorn day. It was fantastic.
pikeys dog Feb 11 2014 03:32 AM
The article mentions the "Kingpin" in Sheffield, this is a miss-print, it should read "King Bee".

Let's hope, the popcorn scene will not be detected and exploited by hipsters and fashion victims 😄
However, I like to mix up popcorn with Norhern Soul and Rockabilly - just good "Oldies": 😉

Lifeline Soul Club: The Real Deal Rare Soul All-Nighter is Ten Years Old

Lifeline Soul Club: The Real Deal Rare Soul All-Nighter is Ten Years Old.

21st February, 2004 saw Andy Dyson and Mick H with myself doing the promoting bring to the scene the Lifeline Real Deal Rare Soul All-nighter too a full house at the much missed Sheridan’s in Dewsbury.

Move forward to 22th February 2014 and we celebrate 10 years of Rare Soul All-nighters. Time really does fly because it doesn't seem like ten years since Nick Stevenson kicked off the first night to a packed club eager to hear the best the scene had to offer. Since that night a who’s who of the soul world from around the UK and Europe have graced the decks at Lifeline playing to eager crowds a fantastic array of rare soul music. I’d attempt to name all the guests but I know for sure I would upset someone by forgetting them.

Since Sheridan's, the Club has had a couple of other venues since settling in at our current home of the The Brookfields Club, better known to most as The Stables to most. In-between we resided at The Ye Olde Bell near Retford, a top quality venue I personally wish we could go back to. We hosted what were in my own opinion two of the best weekenders I’ve ever attended and many others said the same. We then moved to The Fox, off the A1 at Colsterworth which just didn’t work, too out of the way for many. We then got the chance of moving too the Stables, a top quality all-nighter venue with large dance floor and balcony.

Back to the present. Reluctant DJ and top collector Nick Stevenson returns to help us celebrate 10 soulful years.

Baghdad’s (and the South Coast occasionally) Russ Vickers is flying in to make his debut behind the Lifeline decks. A long time collector, Dj and promoter, we are looking forward to what Russ has to offer on the night. We will hopefully be welcoming the return of Soul Sam to the decks after his recent serious illness. As usual Butch, Andy Dyson, Mick H, Cliff Steele and myself (Chalky) will be playing the very best in Rare Soul from the 60’s, some 70’s and knowing Sam something more recent. To see out our tenth anniversary will be Nottingham’s Rob Smith.

Everyone involved with Lifeline, Andy and Mick, Myself, Mandy and Wendy, would like to thank everyone who has helped us reach our tenth anniversary. All the DJ’s, the record dealers in the balcony, the door staff for looking after you all and most important of all everyone who has paid their hard earned money to come through the door to dance, tap your feet or stroke your chin, without you there would be no club!!

Moving forward a little, unfortunately the Stables Club for April and June was already booked for weddings when we tried to book our dates again. After attempts to secure another venue were beginning to look fruitless Mace came to the rescue with the offer to put on a co-promotion at the newly refurbished Sutherland Road Community project, better known to most as Bidds.

A link to some photos before and after at the refurbished club…..

https://www.facebook.com/SutherlandCentreBidds/photos_stream

The venue has been transformed in to a two room entertainment venue. Seating removed and replaced, brand new dancefloor, toilets……you won’t recognise the place!!

Lifeline for the two months mentioned have agreed with the top R&B Club POW WOW to put on a joint promotion. So Lifeline will be in the main room and Pow Wow will be in the second. we are hoping to try and recreate the spirit of Sheridan’s when the top soul clubs from around the country all promoted under one roof. You will hear in the main room the usual Rarest of the rare, forgotten quality oldies from a £5 to £15000 and in Room 2 Pow Wow will treat you to the very best in R&B, Rhythm and Soul, Boogaloo and much more besides. Full details will follow in due course.

We hope to see you all there…we will be back at the Stables in August.

Do you know Dave I think my memory is f**ked.

just do a bit of research and it would appear we were at the Fox before the Bell, 10th December 2005, the first one at the Fox.

We were still at the Fox in June 2006 but must have moved in August or October that year? I can't find an event listing for first Ye Olde Bell night so will have to get old flyers out. Pretty sure the first weekender would be 2007 and the second and last 2008 and moving to the Stables that year. 2009, April we were at thenStables as i had a broken Elbow then and been out of hospital long and it is the only night I have missed.

Will try and do a proper timeline of events at the weekend.

i'd love another weekender at the Bell, best I have been too.

Surviving The Decades: 8 soul groups journey through their 50 year careers

Surviving The Decades: 8 soul groups journey through their 50 year careers by Steve Whittaker
I just stumbled on this recent release via Amazons Kindle store
Kindle Price: £3.58 includes VAT* & free wireless delivery via Amazon Whispernet
Length: 309 pages (estimated)
The online preview below seems flawed but you can get one sent to your kindle before buying.
Press Blurb
Surviving The Decades is eight short biographies of soul music groups who have battled to stay in the music industry, their road has often been dogged by bankruptcy, false promises, racism, and non-payment of royalties.
They learnt their craft the hard way, which no TV reality show can ever teach you. 50 years is a long time in a business which takes no prisoners. Success usually came after years on the "chittlin" circuit and travelling hundreds of miles, but then to adapt to new musical trends and technology, now that to me, takes some doing.

Ady Croasdell - Play Box Mix

A Sunday Afternoon ear treat
Thanks are earned by Kieran Lockyear for putting this all together
Here's the words from the Mixcloud post...
Big thanks to Ady Croasdell for the 66th "Straight From The Play Box" mix.
Ady Croasdell aka Harboro Horace was an aspiring mod in 1966 when he fell in love with music of all kinds. Though mainly going to underground and psychedelic gigs, he loved black music (initially country blues) and heard classic Stax, Atlantic and Motown singles played at the local dances where his Market Harborough mod/skinhead gang went.
An “Old Soul” all nighter in a disused railway station in the middle of the countryside (not even near the village), which he happened on by chance in 1969, lead to a love and interest in Mid-60s soul sides. He started collecting, then dealing (records not pills), then promoting then DJing, then record compiling for Kent in 1982. Kent Records has been running for 30 years now.
He has run the 6TS at the 100 Club soul all nighters for over 30 years and the 6TS Northern Soul Weekender in Cleethorpes for over 20. See Website for more details: http://www.6ts.info/

ady croasdellFeb 04 2014 09:49 PM
September Jones in a couple of weeks, toussaint McCall in a few months and I'm still finalising plans on some of the others. I didn't do this as a Northern mix, there's more R and B and Popcorn than I'd normally play at the 100 Club

Anna Gordy Gaye, the ex-wife of late soul legend Marvin Gaye and the older sister of Motown record label founder Berry Gordy Jr., died in Los Angeles on Friday at the age of 92, the family publicist said.

"She died today at her Los Angeles home. She passed away from natural causes. They discovered her body at 3:00 a.m.," said Maureen O'Connor, executive vice president of publicists Rogers & Cowan.

Anna Ruby Gordy was born in Milledgeville, Georgia, located in Baldwin County, Georgia, the third-eldest of eight children of Berry Gordy Sr. (Berry Gordy II) and Bertha Ida (née Fuller) Gordy. Shortly after her birth, Gordy's father moved up to Detroit from Georgia to seek a better life for his family and to escape any hint of racial tension due to a business deal, later sending for his family after settling down. Gordy, like most of her family, became a successful businesswoman, starting out as a co-operator of the photo concession at Detroit's Flame Show Bar in the early fifties with sister Gwen, later starting her own namesake label, Anna Records with Gwen and Billy Davis in 1958, a year before her brother Berry launched Tamla Records, later to be a subsidiary for Motown.

The label would later be noted as the distributor of Tamla's first national hit record, "Money (That's What I Want)". Other artists such as David Ruffin, Marvin Gaye and Joe Tex also recorded for the label, which lasted until 1961, when Berry Gordy absorbed the label and its artists. Gordy then joined her brother's label and started the Artist Development class, becoming its president. Gordy also joined Motown's staff team as a songwriter. Gordy's biggest success as a songwriter came in the late 1960s and early 1970s, co-writing two major hits for Motown group The Originals, alongside her then-husband Marvin Gaye, including "Baby, I'm For Real" and "The Bells", which also featured Anna's niece Iris, as a co-writer. In 1971, Gordy's husband released the acclaimed What's Going On, which featured two songs co-composed by Gordy, including "Flyin' High (In the Friendly Sky)" and "God Is Love".

The song's musical instrumentation was co-composed by Gordy and was used in another Gaye-Gordy composition, "Just to Keep You Satisfied", which Gaye produced versions by The Monitors and The Originals before overdubbing the Originals' version for his own version on 1973's Let's Get It On. However on Gaye's version, the singer completely rewrote the lyrics and based the song on the demise of a marriage. Gordy left Motown in 1979 and retired from the music business

Sad news indeed - The Mighty Hannibal (James Shaw) - a real soul singer & dapper dresser too. Have to say always loved his Loma 45 ' Get in the groove'. It was only a couple of years ago or so that Elton John was hanging with the Hannibal after recording a cover of his 'Hymn No. 5' (never too late to pick up some tips Sir Reg)

Voodoo Mademoiselles - Lev and September Jones

Five months ago a young Northern Soul fan was filmed by her mother dancing along to an excellent but very obscure 60s soul recording on the steps of the Yury Dolguruky Monument in Moscow. 50,000 You Tube hits and lots of enthusiastic, kind words encouraged the girls to repeat the stunt, this time in their home town of Bristol, to the prescient Pied Piper production of ‘Give Me Lots Of Lovin’’ recorded in Detroit by Freddy Butler. The hits doubled.

Another selection of quirkily-set dance arenas were used for the next four great slabs of vintage rare soul and then the big one. Set at a nondescript Bristol street corner, Lev begins grooving to Pharrel Williams ‘Happy’ which breaks effortlessly into the Northern Soul classic of the same title by Chicago group Velvet Hammer. That captivating video went viral and has so far notched up more than half a million views.

Slightly taken aback by the success of their modest works, Lev’s mum Eve, a 100 Club Northern all-nighter, die-hard back in the 1980s, contacted me about getting some recognition for the artists and music makers on the tracks they were using. The licensing details on some of the music was not always clear-cut and the publishing details could also be problematic, so I suggested they work with an Ace Records controlled track where we could cover them for any licensing eventualities and get recognition to the right people.

Of the suggested recordings Lev, who seems to have a taste for the rarer end of the soul spectrum, chose a track by legendary Detroit artist September Jones of which there is only one known acetate copy-featured at the start of the video. Like the Freddy Butler recording used in the second video it was a Pied Piper production and Ace had made a deal with original Funk Brother Jack Ashford and his Pied Piper partner’s successor so the fabulous 1967 recording is featured in the latest installment, graced by Lev’s dance moves and a Spanish brass band.

The recording has become hugely popular at the 100 Club all-nighters and now Ace have made the previously unissued track immediately available on download and there is a 7” vinyl Pied Piper single being released in a few weeks as a taster for the 2nd CD volume of the Pied Piper story.

Roy Roberts - Thinking About You 7" Out Now!

Soulstacks Records latest offerings

After what seems like an age between signing the contract with Roy and taking the box of finished 45s off the courier man's hands, at last these are here!
Those who've had pre-orders placed for months - yours are going out today. *Lesson learned: If you can't hold it, don't 'sold' it!

You can PM or (ideally) order at the site here

Roy Roberts - Thinking About You/Let's Wrap Up Tonight Baby (Country Star) £8

‘Thinking About You’ is a fantastic dancer that rides along on a groove underpinned by bubbling percussion and spacey synths and with no 7"³ release at the time, it’s the reason that soul people have been hunting down a mainly Country album since it became more widely know a couple of years back.

For the flip side of our 45 we’ve chosen a later moment from Roy’s back catalogue, the 1979 disco soul of ‘Let’s Wrap Up Tonight Baby’: a homemade, slightly minimal four minutes plus of raw dancefloor grooves designed to keep the feet in perpetual motion.
Soulstacks Records are delighted to offer this debut 7" single courtesy of the talents of North Carolina’s finest, Mr Roy Roberts. We hope you enjoy!

Cool Article On Wilton Crump

Here is a cool article my friend wrote on singer/songwriter Wilton Crump (who you might know from his obscure sweet soul single "Give your love to me" on his own Olive Branch label):
http://beltmag.com/gary-indianas-fabulous-footnote/
The article gives a nice insight into the Gary, IN soul scene and the town itself -- birthplace of the Jackson Five and the doowop group the Spaniels. Vee Jay was mining talent from there in the '50s and '60s (and a lot of soul groups came from there). Definitely an interesting read.

Preview clips
“Mellow Tone Studio, Wilton E. Crump, Director & Arranger” reads the ornate cursive lettering of a hand-painted sign affixed to the wood paneling in the Crump family basement. Beneath it sits an upright piano weighed down by a half-century of show posters, string arrangements, and newspaper clippings documenting a young (and a not-so-young) man sharing stages with his musical heroes. “You want to know, what ‘Mellow Tone Studio’ was?” chuckles the man calligraphically immortalized in the sign’s bold red lettering. “This is it!”
In 1967, Crump left Gary to study music theory and education at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. Though 300 miles from home, Crump found inspiration when a familiar sound became ubiquitous around campus. Years earlier, Gordon Keith and four millworker colleagues had formed the Steeltown record label. The ambitious Keith released the Jackson Five’s first record in 1967, and “Big Boy” became a Midwestern regional hit. Soon, Crump heard his former rivals’ voices at every Jeff City party.

Nice read Bob. Wonder though if Wilton Crump is related at all to Michael Crump who was co-composer with Ronnie McNeir on a number of excellent Ronnie McNeir recordings from the 80's ?

Joe Evans Of Carnival Records Obituary

In the mid 1990s musician and record producer, Joe Evans, moved from his New Jersey home to enjoy retirement in Richmond, Virginia. He decided to study the history of black music at Virginia Commonwealth University. After a brief conversation with the lecturer Dr Christopher Brooks, Joe lent him “A Carnival Of Soul” Volume One the first of three Kent CDs of music from Joe’s Carnival label released in the UK.

At the next class, after reading the CD booklet notes, Dr Brooks announced to the other students that there had been a mistake; he should be sitting alongside them while Mr Evans taught the class! That relationship would eventually lead the pair to write Joe’s autobiography Follow Your Heart.

Joe had a remarkable career. The highlights included playing alto saxophone in the bands of Jay McShann, Lionel Hampton, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller among many others. He was a regular member of the house bands at such legendary black music venues as the Savoy Ballroom and the Apollo Theatre at the very height of their fame; entertaining the dancers and backing the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Ruth Brown and Clyde McPhatter.

After a spell as a record promoter for Ray Charles’ Tangerine label and running his own early 60s R&B label, Cee Jay, with Clarence ‘Jack Rags’ Johnson, he went back on the road with the Choker Campbell Orchestra on the very first Motown Revue. They backed Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye and the Supremes at the start of their illustrious careers, thus helping create a new sound for the nation’s youth.

Having tasted the excitement of the independent record business, he was hungry for more and teamed up with his old boss, band-leader Paul Williams, to form Carnival Records in 1962.

Originally based in New York, by the time of their big hit with the Manhattans’, ‘I Wanna Be (You’re Everything)’, Paul had left. By the issue of Barbara Brown’s ‘So In Love’ (Carnival 508), the label’s address had switched to his New Jersey home. There he ran the business with his wife Ann taking charge of the mundane but vital office work. She helped groom the acts and acted like a mom for many of the teenage singers. The music continued to be recorded in New York studios but with a younger nucleus of musicians which included guitarist Eric Gale, drummer Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie and bass player Jimmy Tyrell, instead of the big band stalwarts Williams had used on the early recordings.

The success of the Manhattans dominated the mid-60s releases. When they weren’t recording hits they were helping on background vocals with Barbara Brown and writing songs for their friends and protégés the Lovettes, Phil Terrell, Norma Jenkins and Harry Caldwell. The Manhattans’ sound, which became the Carnival sound, was very much based in doo wop and its inherent strong, simple melodies. The group was blessed with two superb songwriters, Winfred ‘Blue’ Lovett and Edward ‘Sonny’ Bivens. To have witnessed the guys sing at their creative peak must have been a great experience.

Needless to say it was Joe Evans’ musical knowledge, experience and talent that got the sound down so well. Apart from his entrepreneurial skills and musical vision, his own songs and collaborations with other writers and singers were of a very high quality.

By 1969 the Manhattans had left Carnival to record for the King subsidiary De Luxe. Their potential successors Lee Williams and the Cymbals had also moved on. Joe didn’t find an adequate replacement until 1970 when the Pretenders, a three guys, one girl outfit, cut a rousing, uptempo version of ‘I Wanna Be’ that wowed the dancefloors of the UK’s Northern Soul scene when “discovered” by those DJs a handful of years later.

The distinctive Carnival label has been revered by UK 60s soul music lovers since the first copies reached these shores. Prior to the Pretenders popularity here, a four-piece girl group called the Lovettes had, unknown to them, scored a belated dancefloor hit with the scorching ‘Little Miss Soul’, a track that the fans would have called a “monster sound” in the Northern Soul clubs of the early 70s. This song, though written by Blue Lovett, was more in the Motown than the Carnival mould. Adrenaline-powered and feisty, it was tailor-made for Northern Soul all-nighters, where dancers could let themselves go to the Detroit-inspired beat and revel in the glorious harmonies of the sassy girl group. Other cherished tracks for the retro dancers of the UK included the Topics ‘Hey Girl (Where Are You Going)’ and the Metrics ‘Wishes’ both released on the tiny Chadwick subsidiary and now fetching hundreds of dollars to collectors when located.

Local school teacher Phil Terrell had two great 45s on the label including the in-demand ‘Love Has Passed Me By’, Norma Jenkins’ ‘Me, Myself And I’ is a beautiful number as is Barbara Brown’s ‘So In Love’ and the rest of the Lovettes, Pretenders and Lee Williams & The Cymbals sides-that’s without counting the fabulous Manhattans. The Carnival label was a guarantee of soul music excellence; drop a needle on any of the singles and it is going to be a listening pleasure. Kent have issued four 24 track CDs, a vinyl album, both Manhattans LPs on one CD and dotted countless other Carnival gems about on Various Artists compilations over the thirty years we have worked with Joe and lately the Westwood Music Group.

That project began in the early ‘80s when I flew in to Newark to meet up with Joe for tape research and an interview. I landed just as the Eastern Seaboard was being hit by its worst snow storm for decades. That did not deter Joe and his beautiful and charming wife Annie from driving their big old sedan over several miles of icy roads to meet this total stranger. The journey back to theirs was fun with the car skidding and sliding along serenely. We stopped for lunch at a “surf ‘n’ turf” where Joe and I found we had a shared love of good food. Joe was already taking several pills for his health and Annie was concerned for him, but Joe’s charm and his impish sense of fun earned him a good meal. Eventually living to three years short of a century, I guess he read it about right.

That cold spell continued and nobody fancied another slide-a-thon to get me to my hotel so of course the lovely pair offered me the spare room, another good feed and an early start to work the next day. Apart from the priceless tapes and beautiful studio photographs of his acts, Joe showed me two fully signed programmes from the very first Motortown Revues that he played with. He told me stories about playing with Louis Armstrong, performing with John Coltrane and Charlie Parker shortly prior to Parker converting to Bebop. He recalled his times backing the big stars at the Apollo and Savoy, chuckling at stories about Satchmo and how Jackie Wilson jumped off the stage at the Apollo and knocked out three loudmouths who had called him a faggot, all in the instrumental break of the song. Annie treated me like family and a few years later I was happy to attend his 80th birthday party and present him with an award from Ace Records in Europe specifically for his achievements in soul music.

It was very sad that he lost Annie a few years later but he soldiered on and I’m sure he continued to entertain, amuse and enlighten through his later years.

The world should salute Joe, and Ady too for bringing it's attention to the beauty of the Carnival label. For me, the greatest music label ever. Trancendental! and I never really properly appreciated it until that series of cds was released. Track after track of otherworldly ....heaven!

Thank you Joe. And thank you Ady. ( And what a beautiful obituary; which other Northern promoters have shown that level of love for our music?)

Oddfellows Reunion - Leicester 25th May 2014

Just wanted to let you all know there is an Oddfellows reunion booked in Leicester at the original Nottingham Oddfellows Club venue that the nighters were held at in the 1980's.

The date is bank holiday Sunday May 25th 2014, and it will run from 8pm - 2am in 3 rooms (although we are trying to start from 5pm - to allow everybody to catch up early doors but are waiting to have that confirmed.)

To date 6 original DJ's are booked with a little bit more to do in that area. Finalised details will be posted up soon regarding tickets and confirmed times etc. The challenge will be to connect with all of the guys who used to attend and make them aware of the event as the numbers allowed in by the club are a lot less than what I expect will want to attend.

I will update S.S. over the next week or so, but please PM me, email me; ally.mayer@pyrint.com or call 07971 596679, if you have any questions, regards

Hi Simon - As chalky said Skeggy is the month before. The difficulty in putting anything on these days is trying not to clash with other venues but with this event it is more important to accept an available date to secure the original venue and to try and plan this to have the least impact against the soul calendar. I think that the date we have chosen is great for people (and there are a lot already) who will be making long distance travel/hotel arrangements without the worry of work the following day. The challenge we will have is to make sure we touch base with a lot of the regulars who attended in the 80's to ensure they get a ticket as already I have been inundated with requests for tickets and talk of mini buses etc. More info to post over the next week or so. Johnny, if any, knows Overton Vertis and his music. “After I had moved to Milwaukee, I became his band director, although he lived in Memphis. I was his musical director from 1975 until the day he passed away (in November 1980, at 41), but when I was a teenager I played with him some weekends in Mississippi. My high school band was the backing band for him.

BEAU WILLIAMS "I'LL BE HOME SOON" - "OUTSIDE LOVE" HAND STAMPED 45 | PRE-ORDER TODAY | SHIPS FEBRUARY 20, 2014, | LIMITED PRESS | 500 COPIES

You may be familiar with Beau Williams as an accomplished modern soul artist for Capitol Records in the early 1980's.

Years before his Capitol releases, he recorded two powerful funky soul sides and submitted them as a demo to Lionel Whitfield’s Whit Label: the first about easily falling in love and the second about the difficult reality of maintaining it.

Rediscovered by David Haffner and Brian Sears of Magnetic Recordings from the tape archive of TSU jazz director Howard Harris in 2011,

Harris somehow came into possession of this material through his long-standing friendship and working relation-ship with Whitfield. The undeniably funky drumming sadly goes unaccredited but the understated arrangements and production combined with such emotional lyrics make for something special.

Presented here for the first time on Truth & Soul Records in a limited 500 copy pressing with hand stamped labels, sure to become a T&S cult classic, don't miss it.

Such a good record - all the colours of soul painted on this one, from that classic Daptone funk sound to the sweet early 60s gem that is ‘Get Up And Get Out’. 'Stranger To My Hapiness' is straight up Northern and 'Now I see' also has potential to be played out. Rock solid set. I have a few copies of the standard edition album here

Documentary Film On The Italian Northern Soul Scene!

Hi everybody Soul Folks
here is a link of crowdfunding for a docu film on the italian northern soul scene the page was maded not from me but from a my very close friend...the project is very serious and we have also a couple of university behind...
off course any idea or supporting could be very appreciated...and we can show our work in progress step by step...in total clear...especially for the economic things...let me know your opinion!!!
we keep the faith!
Alfredo
Hi everyone.
This is Rocco Romano from Italy.
Me and my fellow black music lovers are trying to gather some funds for an ambitious project: the realization of a documentary about when, how and why Northern Soul has penetrated into the italian club scene, and what its legacy in the italian record collectors' and "clubbers'" milieu is.
With our feet firmly rooted in sociology, cultural studies and audience theories we will try to research the socio-economical, geographical and cultural peculiarities of such musical phenomenon, in terms of demographics, styles of consumption, tastes and subcultural identification.
As David Forgacs noted in his research endeavor on the industrialization of italian culture, Italian audiences have always preferred entertainment products from abroad, but (in our opinion) they never failed to adapt and re-invent the foreign creations, giving birth to interesting brand new cultural objects.
How they paraphrased Soul music and associated phenomena (such as Mod subculture)?
Blending in the most effective methodologies of social research on cultural matters with cutting-edge video-making techniques, we aim at shaping an interesting upshot, and we want it to be a visually pleasing experience and an informative piece of cultural enquiry at the same time.
Give us an helping hand please!

Remember some of the Mods that used to live in Brighton in the 9ts were Italian, there was one girl called Mary, used to live over the road from me in the Lanes, she was married to a Scottish Guy called Divv (David), we both had children at the same time so it was easy to nip over.... Lovely Girl, ... She's back in Italy now, think she went back 99 or 2000, and I do periodically see pics of her at do's... you should look to interview people like her as they bridge both scenes as it were..
She was especially good at buying records from Male dealers, being a quite stunning looking girl, she generally got what she wanted lol.. Sure some folks on here would know who I'm referring to..I'd Love to get back in contact with her.

Witchcraft In The Air - Detroit Soul via History of Soul Records

I'm one of the compilers of this complation of early Detroit Soul for History of Soul Records. I'd be really interested to find out what people think about the choice of tracks bearing in mind that its timescale is 1957-1962. The main idea was to present a collection that we thought would be historically interesting but at the same time very listenable throughtout. Keith Rylatt wrote the sleeve notes.

Any suggestions for inclusion on volume two would be carefully considered.

Below is the company bumph plus tracklisting and a review from In The Basement

Witchcraft In The Air

Detroit Soul 1957-1962 Vol 1

Not just another early Detroit Soul compilation. This is the cream of that transitional, pre-Hitsville era, when Detroit’s labels, artists and producers were putting out popular, black dance music that they hoped might get noticed and sell enough to make them rich and famous. This is a CD to play over and over from start to finish. Every track a gem — no duds guaranteed!

The black music scene in post war America was dominated by the emerging urban, electrified R&B scene in Chicago. Nearby Detroit was musically dwarfed, with much of its talent being drawn to the Windy City, but as the 50s drew to a close, things began to change. Detroit’s population bulge coincided with the consumer boom, making its age profile younger than its neighbour’s. Thousands of southern black migrants were joined by many immigrants from Europe come to work in the automobile industry. Henry Ford’s pay was good, and with plenty of disposable income available for its inhabitants, Detroit became the goodtime capital of the USA.

Hundreds of bars, clubs and backroom record labels emerged, hosting a tidal wave of new talent. By 1960, although it was still too early for any definitive Detroit sound to be identifiable, the city was developing a lighter, more popular style than neighbouring Chicago. It was spearheaded by a young man from Gladstone Street, whose distinctive Motown sound went on to dominate the 60s pop charts.

The tracks on this CD represent the cream of this transitional pre-Motown era, when various labels, artists and producers were putting out popular music that they hoped might get noticed and sell enough to make them rich and famous. Back then no one knew that Berry Gordy Jr would emerge victorious and define the Detroit sound for the decade that followed.

Lovingly remastered with annotated notes by Keith Rylatt

The latest in History Of Soul’s look into the birth of the genre takes us to Detroit for the period from 1957 to 1962 and, whilst I might have preferred the whole to be in chronological order, if that’s not to be then what better track with which to start than Kim Weston’s ‘Love Me All The Way’, her US chart debut. Within the 32-page accompanying booklet, each track is detailed within a quarter-page ‘semi-box’, annotated in bygone-era type and with its own ‘remarks’ section and, in Kim’s case, a hand-written appendage which says: “This sounds real old fashioned but boy can she holler!”

Boy can she, a personal viewpoint being that the lady had just about the finest female voice to ever come out of the Motown studios - and that’s not to decry Mary Wells, Gladys Knight, Hattie Littles, Martha Reeves or LaBrenda Ben, all featured on this compilation, Littles’ strong Gordy b-side, ‘Here You Come’ being the sort of rolling number Wells herself might have cut at the time.

Delights on the first cd include Joe Tex’s answer to Jerry Butler’s ‘He Will Break Your Heart’ in his Anna outing, ‘I’ll Never Break Your Heart’, Fred Bridges’ Andantes-backed ‘Baby Don’t You Weep’ which, although recorded in Detroit ended up at the New York-based Versatile label and the excellent organ and drum driven ‘A Letter From My Baby’ by the fine Timmy Shaw who, along with Johnnie Mae Matthews - here with her strutting, somewhat gimmicky ‘The Headshrinker’ - helped kickstart the career of Bettye LaVette. It’s Bettye’s tambourine rockin’ 1962 Lu-Pine outing that both opens the second cd and gives its title to this whole set, while Eddie Holland delivers a totally different working to Berry Gordy and Billy Davis’ ‘Action Speaks Louder Than Words’ than that of David Ruffin who graced the accompanying disc.

Just one name on the whole collection was new to me, namely that of Letha Jones, whose 1960 Anna b-side, ‘I Need You’ sounds as though it comes from a few years earlier but made me want to hear more from Ms Jones. Ann Bogan, later of the Marvelettes and Love, Peace & Happiness, penned and featured on the Challengers III’s Tri-Phi outing, ‘Every Day’ - another high spot here - Jimmy Ruffin wrote his sparkling Miracle a-side, ‘Don’t Feel Sorry For Me’ and Nathaniel Mayer makes for a third songwriter to front their own material with the upbeat, doo-wop-styled ‘Village Of Love’.

With a the twenty-six tracks on cd-two added to the twenty-seven on cd-one, making fifty-three in all, there are far too many to go into this release in depth but, as with previous History Of Soul product reviewed on this site, the selection has been well thought-out and the presentation is top-notch, appeal here going well beyond the core niche of Detroit devotees.

To be perfectly honest, I'd never been a great lover of the "earlier sounds" (late 50's early 60's) in "abundance" (so to speak), but was more than pleasantly surprised with the playlist on this compilation, and would recommend this outing to anyone with a liking for the earlier tunage, moreover from a personal perspective with a regard to the Detroit ! It certainly floated my boat.....

RobbKJan 08 2014 11:56 PM

The Gladys Knight & The Pips on Brunswick was a New York production with no connection to Detroit, other than the group recording for Motown starting 8 years later.

I've been listening and downloading Bob's shows for years - they are probably the best source I know for top quality 60's n early 70's soul music that gets grouped under the "cross-over' label. If that's your thing and you've never listened to any of his shows, you are in for a very pleasant surprise,

Essential listening, I have lost count of the amount of stuff, especially male group and sweet soul that I have heard for the first time that had the "wow" factor, cost me a few quid as a result though lol

Word passed on from Paul J H from Countdown Books of a recent 2 for one style release

To celebrate the 40th year anniversary (1973-2013) of the Wigan Casino Soul Club, Countdown books have published this new edition — with many extra’s that were not included in the first edition. Additionally, this new edition also includes a second book All Souled Out which is a collection of short fictional Northern Soul stories written by Pete McKenna and Ian Snowball.
So two soul books for the price of one.
