About The Event

THE END feb cd 2017.jpgOF AN ERA… THE LAST SOUL NIGHT…

SERIOUS SHADES OF SOUL – RAFA CLUB NEWTON AYCLIFFE.

FEBRUARY 4th 2017

The last six months has seen numbers dwindle at the rafa club rare soul nights and we’ve decided to pack it all in with a final soul night of February 4th 2017. March 4th would have been our 10th anniversary night so 10 years isn’t bad for us! Unfortunately we have to consider the Rafa Club Association as they pay to put extra bar staff on for us and when numbers are down they make a loss (mind you there has been some great nights when they made ££££’s). They have to think about the future of the club and be able to offer the Saturday nights to others for parties etc.

Paul Ian and Kev would like to thank everyone who’s attended the soul night for their support especially to the travelling DJ’s who more often than not DJ’d for petrol money and loved the place.

The travelling dj’s and local dj’s from the first soul night March 3rd 2007 in order of date, included:

So there it is all above – 10 years at the rafa club – SERIOUS SHADES OF SOUL – who knows where we’ll turn up next and as Ian quoted in the very first newsletter March 3rd 2007 “No Soul = No Happiness”, “Know Soul Know Happiness”.

I  have every newsletter and will be making the last 10 years of Newton Aycliffe into a book of soul memories – call in for a cuppa and reminisce of years and friends gone by.

All the best folks.

Paul, Kev & Ian.

Rafa Soul club – Newton Aycliffe

SERIOUS SHADES OF SOUL

We knew it was going to be a busy night but didn’t expect people queuing to get in at 6.30pm, especially when the club didn’t open ‘till 7.00pm. It was hectic from the start and Ian hooked up the decks to get some noise out of them whilst everyone streamed in.

The 50 free cd’s went in a crack! And if you missed out on one contact Paul and he might be able to sort you out with one. By 8.00pm the place was quite full and already on the decks was the first guest DJ – EVO from Wolverhampton. Although EVO claims not to be a DJ I think he revelled in playing the records to the crowd who were up for it from the Git Go!

A few thank you’s before putting the playlists up and they go to:

June and Denise for manning the desk taking the monies and handing out the cd’s, a great job, thank you. Claire and Sean for turning up so early to help out as usual – again thanks. Sad that Karen missed the last night but was really poorly with Flu.

So at 7.30pm Ian Shoulder handed over Evo and his set went like this:

Traffic Jam – I can’t get over you

Three Prophets – Think I really love you

Walker & Sisters – How long

Margie Joseph – I can’t move no mountains

Tommie Young – That’s all a part of loving him

Lorraine Rudolph – Keep coming back for more

Gene Chandler – Think nothing about it

Marion Stewart – I must be losing you

Lee Williams – Peeping through the windows

Argie & The Arkettes – You’re the guy

George Jackson – I don’t have the time to love you

The Chashers – Without my girl

Wales Wallace  - Somebody I know

Liz Verdi – Think it over

Joanne Garrett – A whole new plan

The Dynamics – I wanna know

The Mighty Marvelows – Talkin’ bout ya baby.

Thanks EVO for that great set and you’d be surprised how many people asked “ who’s playing”, “that set was great”,” loved it”, “refreshing.” We’ll keep in touch with you guys and hopefully will see you all soon.

EVO made way for Dave Eyley and Peter Richer who double decked with this lot....

Mell Britt  - She’ll come running back

Vicky Labatt – You got to keep on

Barbara mason – You better stop it

Jackie Beavers – I need my baby

Young Brothers – Baby

Natural 4 – Thought you were mine

Cashmeres – Show Stopper

Empires – You’re on top girl

The Nomads – Something’s bad

Elusions – You didn’t have to leave

Brooks brothers – Lookin’ for a woman

Al Williams - Nothing

Stunners – Nobody but me

Gwen Owens – Wanted and needed

90 minutes of class Northern Soul from the Tyneside boys who never fail to deliver. Thanks for the offer to support the night Dave you made it all worth while. So with Dave placing Gwen Owen’s Velgo recording on the deck for the last time, Paul Ackley took over by placing another  Velgo record on the other deck which was quite a rarity and started his last set at the Rafa Club with....

Two Plus Two – look around – Velgo

I’m not sure where you’ll hear a set like that again, especially all clumped together in one go? Thanks Paul for all of your dedication and efforts at The rafa Club over the years – we couldn’t have made it without you. Now considering Paul has sold most of his top records that play box was still something special and so many still never got played. Our final Guest DJ was John Parker from Beverley and John needs no introduction to the club as he’s dj’d here many times and as usual he kept the standard so high and started with......

Now  then, I’m going to go to Bletchley Park to find the infamous Nazi Enigma machine to see if it can decipher the rest of john’s playlist as he wrote them down on the night and I’m Buggered if I can work them out. So John, if you can remember what you played that’s outstanding from above let me know and I’ll insert them into the right place – 8 records missed out John, sorry but I need Pablo Picasso’s beer goggles to work them out. What a fantastic set it was from John and he never had an empty floor. Thanks again John – always a pleasure to see you.

Well that was that – Paul and Ian finished the night off and it rolled on until about 1.15am with the final records being Esther Phillips – “Just say goodbye”, Marvin Gaye’s – “Come get to this” and finally David Ruffin’s “Walk away from love”.

Thanks for viewing and if you there thanks for listening.

Paul – Ian & Kev.

So it’s Goodnight from me and it’s Goodnight from him and him!!!

GOODNIGHT.
