About The Event

The return of the Ashton Ukrainian continues after a few fabulous nights in 2021 and we're hoping for another great installment.

If you haven't been before here's a potted history from our very own Chris Churm:

The club was originally based at the  Dukinfield Masonic hall, starting well in January 2017  attended by around 100 guests. Resident DJs were Brian Lester, Chris Churm and Chris Penn.

The venue was great with a large dance floor  and ran until May 2017 when it moved to the Ukrainian Club, a slightly smaller venue (capacity 130) perfect the type of night we were trying to run delivering a mix of lesser known, rare and under played soul; a bit of everything.

The  first date  was June 2017 and was a  great night musically. January 2020 was the 3rd anniversary with guests Phil wainwright and Alex Jones,  respected collector/ DJs to entertain us with their fantastic collections and they were superb, and it was one of our best nights.

Following that in Feb 2020  Les Harrison (one of our regular DJs) and Geoff Stubbs of Stockport were our guests and were excellent as usual .

I must  thank Les Harrison and sue  who were at our first night in 2017 and have only missed the odd one when he has been booked to DJ at Culcheth and our dates unfortunately clashed . He has also helped us to sort the gremlins in the sound system on a few occasions.

Sadly  Brian Lester  who used to play some great tracks decided to bow out from the scene  and our other original DJ maestro Chris Penn moved to the  north east, he  will be missed ,but he has assured us he will be back to annoy us from time to time to DJ for us. .

Here is a list of some of the guys and girls that have played for us and have all taken part in the spirit of our humble Ukrainian club soul evening.

Carl and Maria Willingham, John Hillel, Dave Hall, Chris Penn, Brian Lester, Les Harrison, Derek Watmough, Ian Cunliffe,  Dave Beech, Carol Burgess, Simon Ingham, Mick Howard, Carol-Ann McCarthy, Geoff Stubbs, Geoff Buckley, Tom Dacey, John Baggaley, Dave Flynn, Les Hare, Mark Tobin, Ged Gibbons and Phil Etchells  (sorry if I missed anyone).

As we all know  in March  2020 (just as our guests  Simon Ingham and Mick Howard  were ready to  DJ for us) the pandemic struck and everything stopped but the restart will pick up where we left off and  Simon alongside Mick will be our first guests, hopefully we can bounce back .

Post pandemic the club have informed us that for the night to continue it will have to be a Saturday night event, ironically that is what we first wanted and we think could be better for everyone so keep an eye on the soul source calendar for future instalments.

We hope everyone is well and can’t wait to see you all again

Sandy and I had been told good things about the soul night at the Ukrainian Club in Ashton by friends, so we were very happy to be offered a lift by Derek and Janet Watmough there last night. Thanks very much to them for the lift and for their company plus that of Paddy, our other travelling companion.

A superb night, brilliant music and great company. A good variety of Northern and Crossover soul was played, didn't hear any top 100 tracks, nothing wrong with them but nice to hear different sounds.

Guest DJ was one of the UK's premier DJs Ted Massey, We'd seen him a few weeks ago at the Spitfire Club in Farnworth, so it was good to see him again last night. Tunes like Don't Be So Jive, My Love Is So Strong, Beside Myself, What I Did In The Street and many more enticed me on to the dance floor, thanks for playing my request. Always good to see him.

But all the other DJs did a sterling job, plenty of records I didn't know or recognise, my memory not as good as it used to be. Trying to remember what was played is never easy the following day for me, but early on I heard Bobby Hutton's I've Got A Memory and Billy Harner's She's Almost You. My first foray on to the dance floor was to Ooh Boy, always like to dance to that one.

I did find my legs had given out towards the end of the night but that and perspiring heavily proved I'd enjoyed myself. It was good to see Sandy dancing, I know how much it means to her.

It's always nice to see friends at a soul night, hadn't seen Steve and Rowena Morgan since Boomerang last August I think, and always good to see Sandra Bail, Joyann and co. And the guys from Soulsville and the Bury Soul Club.

The Ukrainian Club is a nice venue with a good dance floor. Bar prices seemed very reasonable, although I was on Pepsi Max; and the staff were friendly too. I hope to return there.

There was a collection for the Ukrainian refugees which raised a good amount, a worthy cause.

Thanks to the DJs and promoters for a very enjoyable night.

Another great night in the company of the Ukrainian faithful - we arrived early to find Ted Massey already ensconced in the bar area having a good old chinwag (gotta say respect to him for making the effort to soak up the vibe of the place before hitting the stage) - also he was heading off Peps' Whitchurch mini-nighter later, which just shows his enthusiasm and stamina TBF!!

Phil kicked off proceedings as always at 19:30 - never a dull moment as he warms us up with some great selections including left field, underplayed and lesser knows tracks but always quality .

Mick Howard followed for the 2nd hour and never fails to get things rocking - that man can read a floor!!! You only have to scan through his set to appreciate that!

My set was split as Ted needed to get away at 23:00 - I thoroughly enjoy DJing at Ashton and last night was no exception - even with the added pressure of Ted in the mix.

Teds set was off scale as you'd expect - I wish I'd kept a note of what he played but needless to say it did the business.........from The Groovettes to the Mello Souls and Sag Warfare to Joseph Webster....also he threw in this  cracker out of Chicago just to show it's not all about the $$$ ....Tyrone (The Wonder Boy) is in fact Tyrone Davis.

Here's a note from the man himself including the list of tracks played in his set (thanks Ted )

A big thank you to Chris Churm, Mick Howard and Simon for asking me to DJ, some brilliant tunes were played as you can see from the lists already posted. They get a very knowledgeable crowd in and the place was packed. It was good to see loads of friends including Geoff Green and Sandy, Shirley and Col Wood, Angie Heap Wills and Ian Wills, Baz Maledy, Gibby, Derek & Janet Watmough and Elaine Faherty sorry if I’ve missed anyone I’m bound to have .
A lot of requests in this lot - I think they are in order but not 100%

Ravins - Your love is what I want
Dewey Black - Takin love where I can find it
Joseph Webster - My love is so strong
United Sounds - It’s all over (Baby)
Sag War Fare - Don’t be so jive
Groovettes - Think it over baby
Bob and Fred - I’ll be on my way
Camaro’s - We’re not to young
Chuck Holiday - Just can’t trust nobody
Appointments - I saw you there
Barbara King -What I did in the street (Gulfstream)
Salt and Pepper - A man of my word
Aspirations -You left me
Pee Wee Shuck and Huey - Beside myself
Tyrone (the wonder boy) - Please consider me
Imperial C’s - Someone tell her
Empires - You’re on top girl
Fortson & Scott - Sweet lover
Classics - One dance
Profs - Look at you
Patrinell Staten - Little love affair
Tiaras - Foolish girl
Mello Souls - We can make it
William Powell - Heartache souvenirs
J D Bryant - I won’t be coming back

Our leader (Chris Churm) finished off proceedings with his usual aplomb and I had a great night talking nonsense with anyone who'd listen - what more could you ask for 🤣
