About The Event

The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2024 we're looking to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests.

Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon.

Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL.

In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor.

We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

In the words of The Late Tony Wilson "This is Manchester(well Tameside) we do things differently here!! Ashton Ukrainian Club delivers again big time !! Rare Soul in all it's guises!!!

July is traditionally a quiet month(yeah right) a full house and although a few of few of our regulars were away, yet more new attendees soaking up the atmosphere!!

Phil Dunn opened the night in fine style, he had a few "deck peerers" having a look see what was on the decks!

Next up (disco) Stu Cheetham, played an amazing set, Vanguards "good times, bad times" Anna Caudell and great to hear Larry Saunders sounding great all over again!!

Karl Chalky White played a blinder, hard hitting 60s Garnett Mimms "as long as I have you" sounded the business "loud and proud" and Derek Martin (unissued) which to me shares the same backing track as Billy Prophet?? .

The night just got better and better with Chris Anderton playing an opening salvo of 60s Bangers AC Reed , Martha Starr and many more, check out the video with Terry Callier lighting the room up, many thanks mate, you smashed it!!

When you thought it can't get any better it did!! Ted Massey followed Antellects, Tranells, Joe Matthews he had the dance floor rocking, mighty fine set sir!!

The Finisher Chris Churm opened with a few 70s faves Marshall, Donovan and Broomfield, Frederick Hymes and a few 60s evergreens sent the Ashton Faithful home, singing and dancing!!

Always nice to catch up with Alan Jenkins and Natalie Nicholls who in her own words, after full on dancing for most of the night, resembled a Strawberry Picker lol

Nice also to see Richard Gilly Gilbert paying us a visit, you all make the whole thing worthwhile, many thanks and respect!!

Team Ukrainian !!!

My favourite day of the month, when Ashton Ukrainian club becomes a temple to the finest soul music.  The atmosphere is not old school, it’s unique. It must be down to the intimate venue, that is attended largely by soul connoisseurs, listening to tunes played by some of the scene’s finest collectors and DJ’s.

I arrived in good time, a quick chat in the bar area before finding a seat in the main room. The omens were looking good, Phil Dunn playing Terry Callier magic, “Look at Me Now”.

Stu Cheetham had the honour of being up next, things warming up nicely, Barabara Mason “You Better Stop”, The Vanguards “Good Times, Bad Times” and Al Gardner….

Loved Chalky’s set. He had the dance floor bouncing with some real bangers, Righteous Brothers and Oliver Norman, but mixing things up nicely with the Soul Stirrers and Marvin Gaye’s “It’s Bitter Pill to Swallow”, making it standing room only on the dance floor.

Chris Anderton showed how versatile he is and not just a purveyor of fine 70’s cross over, with some fabulous tracks, Geater Davis, Martha Star and Patti Drew “Stop Look and Listen” an underrated gem imo, that has a sax solo interlude that is to die for.

Ted Massey followed with a typical class set of outstanding tracks,  William Powell, Jimmy Phillips, The Admirations…..

Chris Churm took his usual spot as the last man standing, kicking off with a 70’s classic, Charles Johnson, some great dance floor fillers, Brooks Brothers, The Ideals, The Volumes “ Ain’t Gonna Give you up”

The night was over far too soon, a fabulous night of soul music. My thanks to Chris and the team for making it memorable. And thanks to the bar staff who are all volunteers.
