About The Event

The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2025 we're looking once again to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests.

Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon.

Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL.

In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor.

We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

On a crazy busy Saturday in the Soul Calendar, we had a great night at Ashton Ukrainian Club. Lots of events on, got to say a BIG thank you to our regulars, who made us your venue of choice, a slight dip in numbers, but the tunes and the Sound System sounded the business last night, crystal clear!!

Phil Dunn looked to be enjoying himself with a great opening set, Joe Murphy "so blue" the stand out track for me.

We went with a change in format with Simon"the fixer" Ingham doing an early 30mins set WOW The Gambrells "you better move" The Groovettes "think it over baby" and  Shifty's old Des O'Connor c/u "hey girl", all before 8pm!!

Lord Ashton Chris Churm also did an early 30mins set played some bangers The Specials "can't find another" New Yorkers "don't wanna be a fool" Barbara Jean + The Lyrics "any two can play" and many more.

Local Collector/DJ Geoff Stubbs followed and played a few new to me? Mixed in with classics from Minnie Jones "shadow of a memory" Frank Dell, Bottom + Company, some classy selections!!

Our man in the North East Chris Penn was up next and he didn't disappoint Volumes "ain't gonna give you up" Notations "trying my best to find her" Mark Lloyd "when I'm gonna find her" Rhonda Davis, Buddy Ace "screaming please" (you get the picture) Awesome set mate!!

Roger Banks one of the most enthusiastic DJs on the scene followed some great girly dancers Liz Verdi, Sheila Ferguson "and in return" , mixed in with Leo Price, Alvin Cash "sweatin" AKA the old "you got me baby" c/u rocked the dancefloor, fine set Sir!!

Simon Ingham finished the night off and WHAT a finishing spot Mac Staten, Nat Hall Cody Black "it's our time" tune after tune hitting the wheels of steel WHOOOSH!!

Apologies no video this time, I was pre-occupied keeping The Belgrano Sisters in check, AKA Ann Mundey + Karen Howard naughty girls xx

Normal service next month will resume

***Advance Warning" due to club commitments, we run a week early, next month. Saturday April 12th is the date for your diary. We welcome back Lowton/Culcheth Main Man Kev Murphy, look forward to that!! ***

Keep your eyes on here and Soul-Source event page thread for more details and updates, as we near the time.

Have a great weekend all, see you next time!!!

PS Props to Mike Roche, Jane Roche and Steve Palmer for doing a Grand tour of Tameside to be with us, thanks guys, means a lot

Peace + Love Team Ukrainian

Update on road accident last night.

A young girl was knocked down coming out of the park near the club last night hence the police cordon closing the road. Latest update on Ashton under Lyne facebook is that thankfully she survived and  was kept in hospital and has had scans on her hip and head.

A little late with my review - and as always I'm careful to emphasise that, as a resident DJ, it's my opinion but hopefully a balanced one

For me the night was as enjoyable as ever with a nicely balanced mix of the rare and underplayed (and both) throughout its entirety, as we've come to expect.

A big thanks to all the DJs and of course especially the Ashton faithful, who without them this would all be a pointless exercise wouldn't it?

Here's my set from 11:45 til 00:30 (I think LOL) ... if we ask nicely we might get our guests Geoff and Chris Penn (maybe even Roger) to post up here to give you all a feel for what we deliver. If you haven't made the trip yet we'd love to see you sometime you'll be made welcome .
