I wouldn't like to say who was the "best" but, in my opinion, Eddie Holland was probably the finest lyricist of his time.

And the songs of Holland/Dozier/Holland became the soundtrack to many people's lives.

Can you imagine life without them???

Holland Dozier Holland,Norman Whitfield,John Lennon.Paul McCartney,Chuck Berry,Carl Perkins,Neil Sedaka,Pual Anka,George Gershwin,Paul Weller,Marvin Gaye

All have written great songs or music,Soulful or not,

Take this into consideration,

Take a Northern Soul classic for instance:-The Dells "Run for cover"

The music and lyrics for that little ditty could have been by grantdyche,

Does that take away the fact that it's a good song

The point I would like to make is that songs are made by song writers,Good song writers,Dont in general make good plumbers,And good plumbers don't in general make good song writers,

Horses for courses,There are some good and some better,

Yeah ok mate,I do go off the road a bit sometimes,The point I was trying to make is that most good songs are by good song writers,

...Nobody changed pop culture more than Lennon & McCartney. Even H-D-H would say that if they were on here...

The greatest soul songwriters have yet to be mentioned on here - Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy. Individually and collectively. Even though the latter co-wrote "Stay With Me" - I can almost forgive him that, so good is the rest of his output....
