WIGAN Pier should be transformed into an iconic cultural landmark centred around Northern Soul, a Wigan MP believes.

Ian McCartney wants to see the space, which has lain empty since theWay We Were museum closed in December 2007, become a vibrant NorthernSoul quarter celebrating the arts, crafts and music of Wigan.

Wigan Council is considering an approach from the Makerfield MP, whobelieves a new project could capitalise on the publicity generated by aforthcoming film about Wigan Casino.

Writer Mick Martin has adapted his script for the hugely popular stage play Once Upon A Time In Wigan for the silver screen.

Producers Freedom Films are currently working to attract talent andfinance to the project, which is backed by Mr McCartney as well asWigan MP Neil Turner, Leigh MP Andy Burnham, Lord Peter Smith and WiganCouncil.

Funny this, was it not the council of the day that played a major part in closing the Casino in the first place, now they want to celebrate it, cue all that is naff to get involved with this little beauty, as ever let's go back in time and milk the golden cow who's udders are well shot already without it being milked anymore, quite frankly this type of thing is total bollocks, I don't subscribe to any of it, keep the faith on this one or rather stick it where the sun don't shine.

Posted more or less the same on a link in Facebook when the story first hit the local papers here. It's front page news by the way in the WEP (Wigan Evening Post). Just a coincidence no doubt, that it's in the immediate run up to Supermarket Soul at the Grand Arcade too!!

SAME couincil that wouldnt back the play when i had no money to go into rehearsal. Also same council that will get a writ from me debating intellectual property rights if they go ahead!!

Isn't in Mick's script though Paul? Otherwise he wouldn't be able to exploit it in any form would he? If so, just curious as to how come you didn't take a full assignment of rights (maybe subject to him receiving the usual backend revenue streams) if you commissioned the script from him and paid him? It was your baby wasn't it i.e he didn't bring the idea and script to you did he?

If so, just curious as to how come you didn't take a full assignment of rights (maybe subject to him receiving the usual backend revenue streams) if you commissioned the script from him and paid him? It was your baby wasn't it i.e he didn't bring the idea and script to you did he?

Was my idea, and it was written via the scenes that i set up in rehearsal. As i had been close friends with Mick for over 20 years we had a verbal agreement that i would have an artistic say in its future and i contracted him to write it (after we had done 6 weeks in rehaersal improvising it.) via his agent. Things like him using my stage directions and musical scoring in his script, i have let go (for now) . But, after taking advice, i do have an intellectual proprty rights claim that would certainly halt any film or at least make investors very nervous.

Yup, in the absence of a script commissioning agreement the court (not saying it'd ever go that far) would look to evidence - it may well be you end up with a joint writing credit if you've contributed (maybe not 50/50, but a joint credit nonetheless) unless the actual script doesn't use any of your contribution. Normally whoever commissioned and paid for the script would acquire the format (subject to the usual turnaround provisions) but I guess if it was all done verbally without any paperwork then it's all up for discussion. Anyhow, PM me if you want any help as this is my day job.

Bingo! I've got a brilliant idea, why don't they include Wax Works of the great and the good of the Northern scene within this complex, maybe a 'Chamber Of Horrors' section too lol, they could walk, talk and ramble on about the good old days to their hearts content.

I would point out that actually Bob Kingston owns the music - well the sort of stuff that goes with this whole gorgonzola concept.

Perhaps they could call it 'Pondyland', you could start the tour with a full body search, then you could have a teapot dancing masterclass to the stomping sounds of the folky shite that was used on 'This England' and finish off with one of Russ' special candlelit processions to 'the carpark' so American tourists can get a real feel for what Northern Soul is about - once they are released tourists could proceed to the souvenir shop and the special opportunity to buy a load of rare bootlegs of 'My Heart's Symphony', reproduction signed photos of Anna Ford and genuine Spencer trouser extensions... Or perhaps they'd rather pop into the caf for a tempting selection of pies and barm cakes, sherbert dips (in very small packets) and specially commissioned official Wigan Casino liquorish torpedos in black. Of course the toilets would be an experience in themselves - and an excellent revenue source through sale of the footwear concession to Hunters Wellingtons.

This is an excellent business plan and would really put "northern soul" on thre map Then again.....I am so annoyed that this irrelevance is still going on with people trying to breath life into the corpse that was Wigan Casino.
