As usual, exploitation of other artists' sounds by the completely untalented (just a longer, drawn-out term for utter shite).

Love to know if you're paying the likes of First Choice, Stephanie Mills etc royalties. Just another bit of advice - don't waste your time telling us about this "stolen" effort - we've been there and done that over 20 years ago already.

I once listenend to an interview with Edwin Starr, where some group had sampled 25 Miles. The interviewer was less than complimentary about the artists doing the sampling, but Edwin stuck up for them saying that they are kids making their own music. Just because we dont understand it, it doesnt give us the right to criticise. They are just doing their thing.

The intervwer replied. 'No, this is still a load of cobblers patched together by talentless magpies'

On this occasion I had to agree with the interviewer.

I cant think of one track where another has been sampled and I have enjoyed.

I think you'll find this is a bona fide release. I don't see why it shouldn't be posted on this site.

Just because you don't like it,or it doesn't fit into your neat little pigeon hole that you call Soul.It doesn't mean that other people on this forumn don't appreciate it.

If you attend any two room event/Weekender,Music like this is getting played in the Modern rooms,like it or not it's a fact mate.

I bought the the first Soul In The House compilation,I'll probably get this there's several tracks on it that are blinding tracks with very Soulful vocals,The Dawn Tallman and Ultranate for example.

Maybe the Openminded quotes are put up there because of the small minded individuals who comment on them.I bet you haven't heard one single track off that compilation have you Dave? Rant over

I never said anyone hadn't a right to post whatever they like Mate. My post wasn't intended to convey that and if it did then I wasn't clear enough and for that I apologise. I simply object to constantly being patronised by tossers who think they have a right to regard themselves as some kind of "soul intelligensia" because they like "new" music. Load of bollox mate imo. It's something that is happening more and more and it's time we told them to "get back in their boxes".

I listened to the tracks on the aforementioned issue and found it abysmal, but that was not my criticism of the post, it was the condescending "Open Minded" comment that got my goat.

Just listened to the above mentioned "soul" track(s) - agree completely with dave moore what aload of garbage. If liking this is being "open minded" then I'll happily stick to being a narrow minded dinosaur!!

God I'm bored of having to justify this kind of stuff.

The C-Rap bit made me laugh til a bit of wee came out . Rap??? Complete know-nothings it's like being at a wedding and playing 'Build Me Up Buttercup' and announcing it as Northern (Yes, I do see the irony before anyone pulls me up on that point).

This stuff is the 'Northern' of today. If anything keeps the 'Soulful' sound going, then I'm all for it. It's 'Underground', it's not 'Bang Bang' and it's not the usual commercial crap you hear in piss-head clubs.

Do some research before you start flinging the custard flans - you sound like the the type of people you always took the piss out of

And the biggest plus, the nice ladies who dance to this stuff aren't my Mums age

I obviously didn't make my point clear enough. I'm not gonna go through it all again, but my intitial post was NOT about the musical content, or the differring styles of soul, or in fact that "There's no place for this on this site" for the initial post. It was about the fact that some folks seem to think they have the monopoly on "openmindedness". I would think that the "respect" issue you mention is a two sided coin and I have and always will respsect other's tastes, all I ask is that some of these snotty, elitist "enlightened" types return the favour.

I hope that makes it clear and I accept the fact that maybe my wording wasn't quite what it should have been earlier.

Don't worry, I'm not offended by the predictable & amusing comments of some above.

& I am glad to have brought this to the attention of some who may enjoy it - which as you can see there are a few on this board.

If rare Soul is the criteria -this fits it - it is a modern strand of Soul music - or House music known as Soulful House.

On sales alone it is 'rare' or 'underground' as many of the releases contained only sold a few thousand 12" (many not on CD before). (note I don't give too SHHZZ whether a record sells loads or few - as long as I like it - would be nice if the artists would get some money tho to fund their next releases )

& as someone said above - this scene uses few samples like other strands of house music - I know a producer from Chicago who refuses to use any samples for instance - so you can see that the puritan approach is not just found on this board - IMO if I like the music - that's good enough for me.

& the sampling of old Northern tracks like Sliced Tomatoes(Fatboy Slim "Rockafella Skank) has brought a whole new interest (& batch of releases) to the Northern Soul scene.

Where you find the elitist angle i do not know?!? - it was a friendly peice of advise to save people who do not wish to look beyond the largerly 1960's strands of Soul music - or music with soul.

When I stated open minded I DID NOT say -such & such is not open minded etc.

I did not say I have the monopoly on openmindedness, & I did not point the finger at anyone in particular who is not.

I joined this board as I'm into northern, rare, 60'2, 70' 80' 90'2 & pretty much every type of soul or soulful music.

I clearly have empathy with people into Northern Soul - that's why I'm here.

Again the comments are not surprising as I know that in every niche Sub culture there are obsessives & order freaks who want to turn music into some mass filing cabinet & will start biting the carpet if anything is filed in the wrong place...

The Northern Soul Scene & the 80's (UK / Weekender) Soul Scene has deeply influenced my DJing & musical outlook regardless of what genre I play.

& the rave scene is often looked upon as the successor to the previous unique nightlife subcultures that the UK has seen such as 60's Soul / Mod scene, Northern Soul...etc.

As a few have commented - these are contempory soul - weekender classics - which you will find in the specialist rooms at events like Southporter Weekender - You will also find some in the charts of Blues & Soul Mag also.

& there is IMO a deffinate parrellel between the Northern / 60's all niters & the Soulful house raves currently going on untill 7am at venues like Pacha in London.

In this small, dedicated scene people also share the same passion, look for emotion in the music & unlike other strands of House music luv a good SONG.

Please if you can see the LINEAGE fro the Wigan Casino to Studio 54 (where Louie Vega was resident -yes!), to the Paradise Garage (where a younger Norman Jay visited), to the Chicago Warehouse - to the Wag club in London - to Pacha in Ibiza - to the Hacienda in Manchester - to Garage City in Bar Rhumba - London to 'Roots'(a current club nite ) in NYC happening today.

FYI: Kev Hedge of (Soulful House ) group Blaze (who also now owns the NYC 70's Soul & Disco label Westend Records, & was founder of seminal NYC nites like Shelter & now Roots) is also a fan of our Northern Soul Scene.

Other parrells with the Northern Scene & soulful House is the Soulful House Movement's drive to return modern Soul & RnB from the strereo type images & cliche's sometimes found in rap & RnB.

Re: rare again - considerably less is known on the Soulful House scenes than is known on Northern Soul - these are the gospel influenced rare gems of tommorow IMO.

For me it's not a case of either or - i like older Northern Soul & the new Soulful Stuff - as someone who has put their hand in their pocket & supported northern Soul for many years, still play some as a Dj & interview many Soul Legends

I think that is as good a reason as any for me to contribute here.

I have no problem if you only want to listen to older releases - but remember that when the releases you like (& no doubt I like) first came out & were themselves contemporary there would have been ppl into older strands of Black music (Jazz, Blues, Gospel, rythym & Soul - whatever...) who would have used exactly the same approach as you to dismiss that music.

As said, I am no the only one on this board who can see the Lineage shared by Soulful House & Northern Soul - so too can Northern Soul DJs like Yogi Hougton.

Oh - & as someone rightly said you have to search the Slip N Slide site a bit to find the clips of THIS album - sorry - that was the most direct link I could find - if you click on the album's icon on the Slip N Slide site you will find your way- & yes Slip & Slide do put out many styles of dance music - so please don't judge this album on the music you may hear when you 1st open the site - as it may be quite different to what THIS album sounds like.

Not the kind of stuff I consider Soul and I have quite a broad taste

I work with a load of youngsters, In there 20s who are in to the rave ,house scene, We have talked in depth about and comperd the two scenes over many a long night shift and the are many aspects whice we have in common apart from the music and the DJs. One lad got married and had is stag night in Ibeza, and as I did Nighters they asked me along, so i went . It was great and all what we hold dear in our scene they hold dear in theres I was as made to feel welcome every where we went, I never stoped dancing, It was so atmospheric the lighting was amaising. If you ever get the chance to go take it go with an open mind and watch the kids enjoy themselves On more then one ocasion the throght that I was watchig myself 25 years ago crossed my mind.

& it's all good anyone not liking this selection - just as you will get two Northern Soul fanatics not liking the same Northern Soul tracks.

Re: Rave - I use the term broadly - when raves started in the UK following on from our 80's Soul & Rare groove parties in dis-used Warehouses of London (I speak for what i was seeing locally - I know Manchester had it's thing going with Factory records / the Haci' etc. also) alot of the music was soulful straight out of Chicago gospel & Disco driven House music, this was all mixed in with funk, Rare Groove & Street Soul - whatever - & Louie vega & Tony humphries played at these 'raves' like Sunrise etc.

Then of course things split on to sub-sub gener's like techno, Jungle etc.. on & on...

The rare groove scene seemed lke a successor to Northern soul with the record collecting obsession carried over but with people generally looking back to the Seventies rather than the 60's - for me the best time in the House scene was when the two scenes (raregroove & chicago house) merged - this was a very free time musically.

I know alot people will be instantly turned off by the electronica, drum machines & samples - but if you can get past that you will hear that the vocals & song structures in this form are quite similar to 60's soul & also share much of the positive vibe lyrics. & also the simplisity of the beat & it's mid tempo keeps people dancing similarly to 60's Soul & Motown.

Ten City "That's The way Love Is"(1988) - that was & still is a House classic with song craftsmanship comparable to the likes of Holland / Dozier / Holland etc (IMO).

South Street Players is right up there with the great souful Garage records of the late eighties early ninties.

Also Roy Davis Jr's Gabriele dosen't get the credit it deserves......

Yes Gabrielle By Roy Davis junior is an absolute classic - The production is raw -almost rough in quality - like alot of Stax & lesser known 60's southernsoul labels - that tune will be around for a very long time.

Apprently roy is moving back to chicago from LA soon.

Hi there,

There's quite a few of us on here that have a broader spectrum of tastes musically.

Did all the scene in the late 80's and early 90's stuff like Ten City, Brass Construction and Joe Smooth were just a natural progression for me and bang up to date with my now all time hero Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro and Miguel 'Migs' a close second.

I don't have any of my tunes from back then, where Strictly Rhythm and Azuli were my fave labels.
