I'm in UK early December and have been looking at the calender and in the lookbacks section for a few nights to string together. Have to say that I've used this in the past and been disappointed with some of the events. Why can't folks post up a few playlists? "**** played a blinding set, followed by ****** who really had the place rockin' and then ******** kept the dancefloor busy til ***** finished the night off when the crowd were asking for more!" (Usually posted by a 'promoter') is a complete turn off and of no discernible value to anyone looking for a gig to attend.

I personally don't want to hear the tried and tested 'names' that play out everyweek with the same playlist plus a couple of changes. I'd rather hear some guys who have deep collections and play their collections out. I'm up for local soul nights that have local collectors playing their wares but don't wanna rock up and hear Frankie Beverly or Moses Smith 3 times. Are there any gigs like this out there?

Hi, Soulfull Sessions at Worcester is on 28th Nov although may be too early for your stay, playlists were up for last months event, previous playlists on our website www.soulstuff.co.uk not a northern night as such but some great tunes get played from all eras.

Lookbacks often gets caught between promoting the next event and reporting on the previous. Not having a dig at anyone specific, I've been guilty of that a few times.

Dave -I've just added December's Attic night to the Events Calendar, I'm always a bit slow doing that. I don't want to risk recommending us Dave, you're travelling a long way and have quite an esteemed reputation in tow. So this is how it is: Dec 5th will see us (4 regular promoters/record monkeys) in a little room above a pub in Mansfield. Room is good for purpose, handles up to 70 with ease, we usually get around 40+ in. Some nights been as low as 20, others been full. Our strength is the guests we've attracted, last month John Manship played a set to drool over. Nov will see Ted Massey, last time Ted played was one of our busiest and best nights. Dec we'll be welcoming Andy Tats Taylor back to the guest spot, that's a really good pre-Christmas guest for us, as not only does Tats resemble santa, he brings along the same spirit and enthusiasm. As we're small we don't give any guidance to guests as to what to play (the exception being we expect originals only where possible), allowing the guest to play what they prefer without dancefloor expectations. We're not a big dance club, we have a dance floor but don't worry if it's not full. There are better dance clubs locally (I enjoy Bentinck and Annesley). We try to keep the quality high but less predictable. Out of the four regular record monkeys, we have enough variation to keep it quite fresh. We do tend to post playlists or part playlists. The event is always first Saturday if you want to lookback in lookbacks. We let our guests decide if they want to post playlists. John Manship preferred not to. It would've been great for people to see what they missed that night but we're not going to overstep what JM wants, we want him to come back. We tend to generate a fair bit of and looking over the decks.

We tend to avoid the word "Bangin'"

The attic is well worth a visit if you are into the music side of things, I would also add Morley Carr in Bradford to the list of places that are worth a visit

Good point Dave.Some Lookbacks aren't worth writing.But if the promoters or punters have had a good night ,its going to come thru in the blurb.What's not needed is bullshit regarding numbers,or complete lack of playlists.You're aways going to get "in" jokes and nonsense,i for one am guilty of that - but we're a long time dead,and i for one am enjoying myself.

Always makes me laugh when the promoters come on saying what a "Great/busy/storming/packed/awesome" night they had....but then none of the hundreds of paying punters come on and add anything about the night..........obviously it was such a top night it left them lost for words!

I could definatly recomend "Dab of Soul" Dave,playlists and reviews (from paying punters) in the lookback section, be good to catch up again mate.

i got an iopd full of loads of tunes and a fridge full of beer and great wooden floor in the kitchen to have a shuffle and its free plus a pull out sofa bed for when you had enough so need to book a hotel or drive back after te night is finished

A punter's view.

The great majority of places in the Midlands and North are 'oldies' nights where the playlists are pretty much interchangeable, though a couple of them are brave enough to make space for a collector to clear the floor now and then.

I'll assume you are looking for non-oldies Soul nights in the first fortnight of December anywhere in the UK; ie. places where collectors gather as much as dancers.

Looking at those listed already, and those that are not, but I can remember as being on in the first fortnight regularly:

The Attic 5th

Although he's the promoter, Dean's first post summed up the Attic very honestly. It may be low numbers or it may be bangin' or it may be both. I always enjoy myself there, despite being a dancer rather than a trainspotter. It's very small and intimate and run by people who are passionate about peering over decks and talking about records with a pint in their hand. I seem to remember you're an ex-para or something and used to danger and strife-torn areas, so it will have the added nostalgic appeal for you of being in Mansfield.

Lowton (near Manchester) Second Room ''Room with a View" 11th

I haven't been since it was the brilliant DDA, but it is the same sort of enthusiast running the second room there now. I am assuming it is on in December, but it isn't yet listed. It has a big main room if you fancy a few oldies as well.

Bishops Wood Nighter (near Birmingham) 12th

Music is typical nighter fare, ie. more geared towards the lesser-played than the obvious but with a few anthems as well. Very relaxed and laid back, and a cosy dealers corner for nattering. One of the smaller (but more perfectly formed) nighters, like Bidds or Burnley, but a little lighter and less intense.

Of the events I haven't been to, Bradford Morley Carr and Almwich Allnighter in Wales have the biggest buzz about them from the people I talk to. I don't know much about London and the South; have only been to a few events down there. Boogaloo looks your best bet down there.

Worth checking the lookbacks anyway for the events I've mentioned. You should find playlists.

Those I haven't mentioned: either I've forgotten about them or missed them in the listing; they aren't listed yet; I haven't been to them and they haven't caught my attention; they are oldies or are specialist (eg. rnb/modern); they aren't in the first fortnight. No disrespect to any of them, just trying to match your criteria.

You could do a lot worse than get a cheap flight to Nurenburg with Air Berlin. 2 Great rooms, main 60s room upstairs (but not oldies) and a great crossover/70s room downstairs, top DJs playing something different to a packed venue (600+).Nurenburg is also a really happening city, plenty to see and do and the Xmas market that is held the same time as the weekender is the biggest in Europe i believe!

It always beats me why more Brits dont make the effort to get out to this weekend, its the weekend of the year for me.

hi dave...i write some of those terrible reveiws of my 'shared' promotion but make no apology for it !....if its half empty i write it,if no one dances...i write it ...if its 'wicked' and people shout for more at the end ..i write it ...and my playlist..i write it...its not bullshit its a true reveiw of the night which hopefully may make some new punters give us a look...Bristol is a bit of a soul backwater and there are no other nights like us in the area....

one of the other residents 'john stapleton' also puts up his playlists but the other two residents do not come on here and only a handful of soul sources give us a look so we dont have pages of replies....there are soul fans outside of soul source remember
