Meanwhile, independent record shops are finding new ways to fight back. A new website, indierecordshop, is dedicated to promoting non-chainstore outlets that sell new releases.

So what are the prospects for anyone brave enough to go into music retail today? David Lashmar has some advice.

"There is a market, very definitely, on vinyl," he says. "I think your digital formats are gone and CDs will make a poor man of you.

"But specialise and get it very finely honed. If you're just going to do northern soul, do northern soul - don't get tempted into doing punk or reggae.

"Become an expert. But you've got to go online to do it, you've got to sell online - you'll never get enough people through your door."

It's called "Dyscworld" in Scarborough and it's open Mon-Sat 10.00 - 4.30. Another member on here 'Soulmaguk' goes in there a lot but I get plenty of good records that he's missed so Lordy knows why he goes in there...

well online is not the only way. Why not CD and record fairs which are still going and all over the place

I go in to buy the bottles of liquid gold, you know that Godz!

There will still be record shops, the big ones may disappear off the high street, but smaller specialised ones will still survive. My shop is basically my warehouse, as long as I take enough through the door to cover costs, I make my money on-line, venues etc.

On the other hand you all talk about the good old days, but a hell of a lot of you don't support us either, ask yourself when was the last time you went into a record shop and bought something, I stock most of the new release soul 45's but I know local's who still send off for them, when they could just as easy pick them up from the shop.

So if you're near Rhyl on holiday please come along and say hello, you may even find something you might like to buy.

i would vist any record shop but i always need money as i do not like to vist a record shop without buying

Well you can always put the volume down a notch, so no real drawbacks there

On a more serious note: I think the article's very accurate, but I do think it's possible to survive if you're not focusing on one genre. While all shops in my local town were shutting down, an old store reemerged with new owners and they're doing really well selling a wide variety of genres. But... in every genre they're very selective in what they're selling. So I think sticking to one genre isn't really necessary if you're cautious enough.

Surely the only answer to the question "What happens to record shops after they die?" is that "they're taken to their vinyl resting place..."
