Just going through some old documents and found this Soul poem that I wrote about 37 years ago.

Wondered if anyone on here had ever sat down and put pen to paper and captured their feelings about

this wonderful music?

Old King Cole's Soul

Old King Cole Loved his Soul

Loved merry old Soul did he

He called for Danny White, Jimmy Thomas and Bill Black

Man! What a fiddlers 3

Now first of all came Jimmy Thomas

and he sang 'The beautiful night'

when he had finished he left the stage

And on came Danny White

When Danny White was on the stage

He sang 'Cracked up over you'

Then he sang 'Natural Soul Brother'

To mention but a few

Then on the stage came our well known friend

Bill Black in great demand

And guess who came on with his combo

That's right! The Bob and Earl band

Now both the bands went on to play

'Little Queenie' and 'My little girl'

But all this soulful music

Sent King Cole into a whirl

Then all the Ladies, Lords and Dukes

All did their very best

But alas they could do nothing

And laid his Soul to rest.

Heheh, Just a bit of fun, glad you like it anyway :-)

Like it, its one of the most moving pieces I have ever read! It's up there with Poe's A Dream Within A Dream or Blake's A Poison Tree.

Here's one I wrote years ago from the darker side and was

influenced by a couple of friends on the scene.....

Chemical Brains

Chemical brains sit alone in their room,

frightened of leaving their guilt-ridden tomb.

There's a smile on their lips but it's just a disguise,

For they can't hide the pain that burns in their eyes.

It's a pain they're aware of but one they don't need,

that festers inside like an alien breed.

'Won't somebody help me?' their eyes seem to shout

but their plea goes unanswered, there's no-one about.

It's just them and their world they've created inside,

with nowhere to run, so there's nowhere to hide.

Just lost in a chasm of nightmares and pain,

endlessly floating through oceans of rain.

These paranoid minds play their own little games,

like pointing the finger and calling out names.

Yet their twisted assortment of personal grief,

helps no-one least them, to assist their relief.

The solution's quite simple, it's easy to fix,

a brain and a chemical, really don't mix!

there once was a lass called sue

who decided what she'd do!!

sat night and nowt to do

decided a club she would do

across the moors we did go

freezing cold due to snow!!

upon the journeys end

was met by someones friend

strangers to me but wat the eck

follow the crowd and act your best

blimey its afternoon

club dont open till you see the moon

my mam dont know wat Im up2

she would have a fit

the air be blue

but as Im no longer living at home

who cares where I do roam?

opening time has arrived

queues of people outside

you have to join i am told

be a member but how old?

collect ya card next time you come

but how do they know I will?

pay the lady at the door

now im show the dance floor

records playing I dont know

how do you dance ? its like a show

but as im a dancer I do my best

hearing a beat in my chest

my heart is racing so fast

wonder how long I'll last

i move about on the floor

how I wonder whats instore?

lights come on time to end

so soon i ask my friend?

its 8am and time to go

sunday morning aint the same

this place aint a game

its a way of life from now on

when can i come again i ask?

7 days its on again such a task!!!

waitin so long to do the same

I was a different lass going home

felt grown up and not alone

the local club was on that night

we attended but what a fright

sugar sugar being played

not the same as sounds made

thro sat night!!

Im not a follower never was

but when saturday came

folk laffed at me because

going back to that club

following others on the bus

a convert I was you may agree

but the sounds im hearing

are for me

soul music comes in all sorts

RnB Motown you can agree

its the sound I want to hear

from now on each sat night

doing the thing that feels right

meeting friends that love the same

no its not a game!!

sundays are such a pain

why does nobody complain?

must have done cos now im told

there is a club where the door

is open 12 til 4

how we get there no one says

follow us and I obeys

we walk for miles

club open how we smiles

pay the fee and enter in

bloody empty what a sin

Top 20 club was a shock

there I was in a frock

BUT at last they enter in

making such a din

dancing to music and the beat

how my body aches admit defeat

time to go home

roll on saturday of next week

all recovered once again

never doing the same thing twice

got those gloves so I can clap

got a pair from the catalougue

but why do I look a twat

wearing two instead of one??

glad I noticed before the end

but which hand do they wear it on

keep the faith that glove does mean im

learning fast folk do agree

should be left or is it right?

folk share the cost and wear one each

sod the lot its either or get it right at the door

a group is on the next week

club is packed not by geeks

we are all the same in that club

group on in a room never saw them

busy dancing to a tune

youre ready now what a beat

moving my feet across the floor

by week 5 im doing well

how much longer will it last?

did some gear thats a first

made me different from before

dancing longer more more more!!

by weeks six more gear was had

off some lads i cant recall

things are changing

same club same lass

old and new ones different class

do i follow or give up

of course I follow on each week

could say no but am I weak?

its part of that new life i have

but sundays now are worse for me

no sleep now till monday night

up for work must look a sight

its the price I pay for what I like

no money left on monday night

rent to pay food to get

sod it all I do declare

never borrow never lend

Im a regular now

and attend each week

loving it as one does

why do we get to hear

now they have many rooms

good choice for some go where ya love

how do we do it in a club

cater for more I do agree but

Creases like razors ,Eyes like lasers ,purple hazes ,

Sounds that amaze us ,other peoples gazes ,

" Look at those crazies "

We're not passing phases , we're going places

Cigarettes luminous traces ,Levi's held up by braces ,

How my heart races ,looking thru the record cases ,

Dancing shoes tied with laces ,moving in the smallest spaces ,

Where the chased become the chasers ,

How i miss those smiling faces ,

2000 aces ,in one oasis

We don’t need no jewellery or a fancy car we are just happy the way we are

It’s sweet soul music what keeps us sane not a tedious life in the fast lane

We sing along dance the blues away or just stomp in happiness any time of day

We search for years for that elusive song find the artists although they may have gone

They have a special place in our hearts they will live forever and we shall be their guards

It’s a feeling so deep inside when you’re on that wooden dance floor you just can’t hide

The world is perfect the moment is there pure happiness and you just don’t care

A backdrop here some shuffling there right on the beat you jump into the air

You land on your feet and you spin like a devil a tattoo on your forearm says ``soul rebel``

You slide away all troubles are gone your close eyes and you finally know where you belong
