Following on from another thread regarding guaranteed floor-fillers I was wondering the following...

As we have plenty of DJ's on this forum I would be interested to know - Have you spent big money on a 45 and sadly cleared the floor at the first opportunity of playing it?

This must be a real downer to most especially if you were itching to play it.

though depends on what you class as 'big' i guess.....

Yes. Often it isn't the wrong record or the wrong crowd it's just that they aren't right for one another. I have only played Richard Marks out once when I knew it would be appreciated that was at Soul or Nothing. Wouldn't dream of playing it at Lytham when we have a full dancefloor. I made that mistake with the Vondells  doesn't make the Vondells a bad record or me an egotistical demon or maybe looking at the other thread it does.

not really big buck items..................

DJed ay one certain venue

dropped bobby treetop....cleared the floor...

one guy came up to me and said "PLAY SOME 60s MATE"...pissed mi sen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also REA & CHRISTIAN -SPELLBOUND cleared the floor (diff venue)

18 months later MASSIVE FLOORFILLER

Not spent big money £20 on a then virtualy unknown (in my area) Tony Clarke Wrong Man Demo. Played it to empty floor then within a month same venue full floor

I was round a DJ's house in the early 80s doing a trade, when he gets a phone call from Richard Searling.

Richard was negotiating the sale of a record and the DJ eventually paid £500 for it. (About two months pay for me then).

At the allnighter the following weekend, even the tumbleweed didnt venture anywhere near the dancefloor. The DJ persisted, with it at another three or four niters soon after, but it just didnt happen. I guess we'd call it deep soul.

He doesnt post on here so I wont name him. Cant name the record cos that might give it away too, to all the anoraks on here

Obviously time to sell it Dave.

Not all bad news though, I happen to be in the market for one.

2 situations to speak of. Firstly in 1974 I first played The Seven Souls at the Casino. I was already for 'another monster' . It sadly cleared the floor for 6 straight weeks and was promptly sold off to Rod Shard(I think). 30 years later, I buy Lillie Bryant on Tay-Ster from Tim Brown for £800 (very cheap I might add) and a superb oldie I never had. Sad thing its a poor floor filler(IMO).

Most I paid when I was collecting was £200 for You Can Lump it by The Embers. The handfull of times I Djed I was eager to play this but cleared the floor everytime. I packed up not long after that  having said that the track didnt do Colin Law any harm when he packed the floor with it at Shotts.

Seven Souls is still awful IMO  bit I would dance in a car park to lillie Bryant which is absolutley superb also IMO

Hell I'd even dance if Dave G was playing it, while wearing his shorts.

It was a bit harsh wasnt it. Nowhere near as bad as The Professionals.

I just think I was unlucky. Before I took a break from niters, it seemed to get played 8 times a night. Then when I came back it was still getting loads and loads of plays.

nothing major expencive but have cleared the floor with......Jimmy Heart - Tea house in china town and Big dons rebellion - it was true, not going to stop playing them though two fantastic records IMO off course, just the crowd needs 'edjucating' ***

*** a little joke from another thread befor i get attacked

You can come and dust with your broom any day, Mark. Now, is it hard or soft bristles - is it a yard broom or a softer Bissell hand brush biggrin.gif In my former life, I was a Bettaware salesman...... :D Jo x

I agree with you, Matt but there's no accounting for regional taste :D What's big oop North isn't necessarily what's packing them in Darn Sarf and visa versa - but that's the beauty of the scene.........never a dull moment  Jo

I remember going to a "Rarest Of The Rare" night at the Manchester Ritz a few years back and seeing Kenny Burrell empty the dancefloor. The tune? Frank Wilson...
