They were always in the record bar at wc doin some hustling and trading bigger sounds, basically try to have people over, any clues to who they were!, it's cool don't worry I'm not after any money back or redemption after all these years lol. Think I remember the John drevars connection, he had proper curly hair cut quite neat and his mate was smaller with a biggish nose and always flogging a copy of benzine vot. Always felt dubious of em whenever they looked at my box, proper pair of sharks lol

Yeh the Hovis i knew had very tight curlie hair he had a mate with a large nose and another mate who was on the large side but the other member of his group was a young girl called i think Julie or Jackie she worked at Thorn lighting in Shaw , and apart from really fancying her (she was lovely) she used to print out large wants lists for me at work , a large bundle of which i have just pulled out of my desk now !

at the time i also went with out gear , but could sometimes get my hands on some , so i used to give it to her and she would sell it for me to fund my other habbit (Records)

Well i was part of that crew , Me , Carts and Tom Ryan used to come down from Prestwich to meet up with Withers McCadden and groups from Stockport Hull Blackley and of course you lot from Shaw

Yeah was just kidding. My nose might be a bit on the largish side but I don't think I was the guy the topic starter was talking about. During that period Hovis would have been knocking around with someone else as I was more in the Rod/Dave gang when I came back.

Hovis turned into a proper wheeler dealer during my time off and I guess he was a prototype 'hot boxer' as he always had a handful of top sounds but got them by selling all off last month's records. I was more of a hardcore collector and at the risk of being immodest, my collection would have wiped the floor with his before I sold up for the first time.

Tan and I stayed friends for quite a while and we both got into post punk stuff and used to go and see bands at the Ritz. Kind of drifted apart eventually and in 1983 I moved to Oxford, then went to London and ended up here in Scarborough and never had any contact with that old crowd again. Life's changed since then and I don't really look back. Speaking of which, the beach is calling.

All absolutely correct, apart from the fact that Charlie Gracie UK Demo that Alan Rhodes had cost a fiver, and had been in the very back of some guys sale box in the record bar at Wigan for about 6 weeks - £5 - Alan and Hovis had both seen it, I kept looking at it myself and couldn't decide whether to risk it or not... then one night Alan said, I bought that red & white demo, I'll play it for you and you'll kick yourself!" - he did, and I did!

It did have no centre - but was definitely a demo he played 1st time at the Casino

Unless the demo was Hovis's. He did play a few of his records every week

John Drevars Expression were a 60's band from Southampton (slightly moddy) and well known to everyone there.

Pretty sure Shay ( who I believe was from down that way) played it at Yate in '76 or '77 and was the first to play it. It was his big tune (sound) at the time. Happy to be proved wrong, but credit where it's due

Yes it was Kath she would have been about 17 last time i saw her back in about 76 to 78 era as i said she used to get all my record lists typed up at Osram did it later become Thorne ? I am really sorry to hear she's gone mate , she was a lovely girl were you part of Hovis's crew ?
