I have started listening with 3 speakers, left right and the middle wired to both positives of the amp. This gives you some strange out of sink stuff. The best up to now has been the topics hey girl from the Kent cd, the voice nd harmonies stand out something else.

If its mono its a mono recording( mixed left right into one line ) but this adds to the sounds third dimension.

Is your amp built to run 3 speakers, ie 3 paired speaker inlet/outlet sockets?, or just 2 pairs?....if only 2 I think tunes would sound out of sync

Without sounding like a complete anorak I take sound quite seriously, believing old disks should have the best gear (hifi) to play 'em thats affordable. my set-up is1210 with ortofon concord nite club needle, Grundig round ball speakers, Marantz 2225 receiver amp.

I think the amp's late 1970's thus solid state, ball speakers (original 1975) still holding up. System was fairly cheap, for mid-to-late 70's original hardware, roughly my first ever time of 'Northern' exposure. In reality, the amp needs an overhaul, and the speakers are always gonna look better than they sound. Improvement needed in stylus and the speaker setup. fine for now.

So you've bridged the positives onto a third speaker. Improved vocal definition is good on any record I reckon. You tried it on harmony type stuff? (i.e Herbs -Put a Hurting on my Heart, Devotions -Do Do De Dop, Commands -Don't Be afarid to Love me etc. Apologies if you hate this kind of sound! )

Listen to mine on a Maplin USB turntable through my laptop! Can play a few that way without getting off me arse! Have got a conventional deck wired up through a midi system but too much hassle plugging everything in!

When I whack it up loud at 2am on summer nights, open the windows - the bulding vibrates and the fookin' neighbours get blown outta bed! God Bless Eddie Parker!!

1200s-with Stanton d500 carts-4 channel gemini mixer with headphone jack for tunes I don't have played through an iPhone-kenwood amp(ancient)tannoy speakers (also ancient)-sounds bloody awful-too tinny or too bassy with no happy medium-I'm taking notes

Yep, they're part of the Bose Acoustimass Range. I got the Acoustimass 10 set. It comes with a floor positioned sub woofer and 5 small speakers that I pre-wired with balanced cable inside the walls.(I think they do a wireless version now too. When they kick in people have to look twice to see where the sound is coming from. It's a real proper surround sound that comes with a digital balancing tool. I think you can get them customised up to 500w each too! I had them made here in Spain by the dealership. It compliments the Denon perfectly. They weren't cheap, but hey, you can't take it with you eh?

Like U my system was a present to myself, I'm pleased with it, my neighbours have told me they DONT share my tastes in music , consists of British components as follows :-

Quad 12L floorstanders, Bi amped via a pair of Quad 909 monoblocks (using QED Silver Anniversary cable), Quad CD player and PreAmp, deck is a 30 year old Dunlop Systemdek mounted with a Rega RB350 arm and a Grado M/c cartridge.

I had a round system deck, bugger for the 45 to 33 change, liked it. My mate had A Dias turntable that was cool.

The Quads sound great, I have LS35A at home but a special custom made pair with special boxes (ugg!!!! will go into detail one day).

One of the best responses from a unit for vinyl is via a Soundburger, fresh head and belts helps, with either decent headphones or a reasonable set of PC ourput speakers.

When I play my 45's through my main Arcam system it never gives that authentic feel..

Cleaning the drive belt helps (washing up liquid) and pully wheels so it wont slip on finger grease.

I re-wired my speakers and got a better sound, you spend so much on speaker cable then when you look in side the cabinet you have simple bell wire.

Like you I rewired the inside of the speaker cabs from bell wire to 3mm solid copper wire, it does improve the sound.

These are JBL 1000W drivers in my cabs, not bad for in the house. Yamaha natural sound amplifier and of course a 1210 with stanton 500AL at the front end.

The comment about the wire in the speakers is something I never even considered until we started building the Hitsville sound rig. I bought 4 large floor speakers from a company in Chicago and blew all 4 of them first time out! Ended up running around Central Florida all night and renting a complete rig to finish the event off. Took the cabinets down to a Audio specialist the week after and had all the innards ripped out and replaced with top quality bits including the wiring. Have used them for 7 years now and they still sound great. When I rigged the record room, which I built from scratch, it was a case of lessons learned and it cost me well over 200 quid in cabling and connectors alone. (I ditched the Bose cabling but kept the connectors).

I'm skint now of course but.......worth every penny.

Good to hear that someone else uses Grado styli too. I'm always puzzled when folks say "the needle isn't really that important". I've used Stanton, Shure and Ortofon but NOTHING touches the Grados for a warm analogue sound at low and high volume ends for me. No fancy gimmicky head shells, no fashion accessories to match, just good old fashioned, second and third generation, hand built, quality research and engineering.

Amp and deck (sounds like two celebs) have been changed over the years but always played through a pair of 35 year old B&W DM4 speakers.

Stanton St.80 turntable with 500b cartridge and a Cambridge Audio Azur 540A amplifier.

I agree about the grado cartridge i had one years ago until the kids decided to use it for scratching, afraid it did'nt survive that.

Update - I have just changed the Stanton for a Rega RP1 with RB101 arm and Ortofon OM5e cartridge. It only arrived today but initial impression is a big improvement on the Stanton which had the short scratchig arm fitted.

Stylus is very important! I think the Ortofon concords are great. Durable and their stylus tip shapes (elipse or round - designed to cover more surface area in the groove) work well. Depending on the record condition, you sometimes don't want to pick up too much high end!! Also like the concord's thin-ness - clearly see tip of the needle which is great when dj'ing.

Cheers Dave! The needledoctor link shows the workings of the grado dj200. (The one reviewer mentions you can backspin it without knackering it. As its labelled as a dj stylus, you'd expect it to be durable (but not for scratching!! )

The Hard To Find link shows their uk demo store (in Brum) open til 5pm saturdays. So collection also possible. I'll look forward to trying one.

most important thing for disc spinning is airbourne and actual vibration (comes over as feedback on lots of frequencies)

always decouple all components from whatever they stand on-even if you use specialist stands etc a squash ball cut in half is a value upgrade-dont use 4 though- 3 is best

dont get ears syringed as an upgrade-it has a down side for the perceived performance enhancing effect, and needs doing more and more with every treatment

I've had my Quads apart, they actually have decent comnnects in them, VERY heavy cable, but not silver.

Absolutley, only thing is I dont actually have it set up with the Grado, I was pissed a few weeks back and f**ked the styli, ay over a ton for a new cart I have yet to run it by her indoors. The cart I'm using is a bog standard one and is rather heavy on the Bass.

i run a vintage technics direct drive sl-1900 turntable with stanton 500-2 cart ,pioneer solid state sa-408 amp and large celestion ditton 22 speakers with 5 mm thick speaker wire ! well loud enough for home use.

and soundblaster external soundcard into pc....record anything you here on the net

oh and still have a realistic solid state twin tape deck inbetween...just in case

I use the ortofon pro-s stylus and I think its just ok..I think I may change up soon because the pro-s lifespan is not long im playing the records at about 2.5 grams..I like to record the 45s onto a disc so I can play it in my ride but what I notice is that the highs and lows will damage your car speakers..would like to know some tips on cleaning the audios a little..crackles,pops,hiss,balance,etc..

You have to remember that most of the records are mono so there is a lot of rubbish thrown at you. I wire my leads together, its not as impressive sounding but more correct. It sounds like this is your problem.
