HI BROTHERS & SISTERS, May I wish all of you the very best for 2016, & I for one am so glad to see the back of 2915, after at times feeling so ill & in constant pain,  as you may be aware I have completely neglected the thread for most of the year, more of that later, but first can I thank those of you who have kept the club running through out 2015, .

Do I need to explained the rules are so simple, 10 you must own the record on vinyl to make a posting, 20 hopefully your choice will be a 45 seldom played or new to the forum, 30 any comments made should be about the record nothing else, 4) this thread is not for selling records or for promotion of events please/

The first record of 2016 is from C L Blasthttps://youtu.be/qstR_oUoT-k  A great bit of soul my copy cost £10 but have seen it sell for £100+ HOPE YOU LIKE this 5 STAR rated 45 KTF in 2016....DAVE K

We bass players call the sound 'muted flats' as it's played with old fashioned Flatwound strings with a lump of foam stuffed under them so you get that muted sound with no sustain,

That's really interesting, maybe something of a signature Brunswick sound, as heard in Jackie Wilson cuts like 'I can feel those vibrations', 'Sweetest feeling', or Tyrone Davis 'Can I change my mind'.  Maybe even a late 60's 'Chicago' sound i.e. Lee Charles 'I never want to lose my sweet thing', or Shirley Wahls 'Why am I crying' which have that soft, slightly baggy finger picked bass as opposed to a lot of say Detroit or Philly records of the same period.

One non-Chicago tune that springs to mind with a really cool 'muted flats' bass part is Patrinell Staten 'Little love affair' (Sepia) - the bass sound really sticks out when you hear it loud. Have posted it underneath, which I know breaks the rules because I definitely don't own the record (unfortunately) , but a great tune nonetheless and always worth enjoying:-

Mike has tried to show me how to quote without the embedded element but I can't suss it out...

This whole bass technique thing is gonna be evident in many recordings done by the big names of the 50s and 60s, the electric bass guitar was only invented in 1951, pretty soon big names of the day such as James Jamerson (Motown) Carole Kaye (Wrecking crew legend, Beach Boys etc etc) Jo Osborne (Carpenters, Mamas and Papas etc etc) the best example of it I can recommend is Matt Munros' 'We're gonna change the world' which changed my life when I learnt it. Beach Boys 'God only knows' among others, Doobie Brothers 'Long Train runnin', Carpenters 'For all we know'...I could and would happily go on allnight. I personally among my collection have the Rickenbacker 4001S bass which has the built in muters, fender dropped them in about 1965.

Yes this Patrinell Staten cut has that same technique in evidence, good spot! Bobby Garrett ICGA however does not. Give you some idea. But yeah if you play Motown in clubs as I have done most of my life you're gonna need this technique. a couple of posts up I mention a vid in which I'm showing the technique but can't make blatant plugs here as I do get paid for youtube content, the vid (Sweetest feelin) will only be there a short while. If I can gauge enough interest here at SS in music lessons I might update my own channel and make a thread here to include tutorials on stuff like Sam Dees, Bobby Garrett, Sandi Sheldon etc etc for folks who have unused bass guitars at home. Music is the gift you must give, no charge, on request, but I don't want to hammer that side of myself unless it's specifically wanted. Basically all those frustrated bass players out there, get your bass out show an interest and I'll give you 'Daytripper' to impress all your mates free!

Yep good spot Chris!

Thats a great record Kev.I remember recommending this to a couple of oldies DJs some 10 years back. One of them gave it a run of plays but told me it bombed and cleared the floor so he gave up on it.Personally i rate it and im sure it will go at some time its too good not to

Top drawer tunes again fellas, thankyou!

Was at Bidds last night & spent the majority of the night in the R n B room as there was a great atmosphere & some top notch tunes been played, the guys behind the decks had certainly been raiding there piggy banks :lol:In amongst all the biggies there was plenty of cheaper tunes filling the floor, proof they don't have to cost a kings ransom to do the biz.My post today is one of those cheaper tunes that for me was up there with the best tunes played on the night.........also think this could be played in any northern main room............just listen to those horns breaks?

Sonny Rhodes- You Better Stop Galaxy

Well seeing as we're adding a few oldies now, and they're oldies for a reason, some folks are sick of hearing 'em, but let's be honest they were played out for 40 years for a reason! A Wigan oldie from me, I never went there, still in my 40s me...

Had this one given to me as a 'choose any one that you want' by a divorcee in 87, I'm sure there were better ones but this one I badly wanted (the record and the divorcee, was she outtasight man! 15 years my senior, the weekend lasted till Thursday!). Some poor Shropshire guy lost way more than this in the divorce settlement, you should've seen the house! Stories like this one are the reason I post a real pic as my avatar, otherwise these tales would look like pure fantasy. Forgive me lord for I have sinned...A lot!

Seeing as it's now been established that it isn't a boot here it is, just because I can...Good write up on this YT post too.
