The B side "Don't Leave Me" got plays on the northern scene in the early 70s(poss late 60s).

2 great sides.

"Back Up Train" got a lot of action on the Soul charts, and got a lot of air play in Chicago, Detroit, L.A. San Francisco Bay Area and NewYork/New Jersey.  I don't remember it getting any play on the Pop stations.

I think you're rather teaching your granny to suck eggs here. Like most I have the album AND the single - Don't Leave Me/Back Up Train etc have been played on the Northern scene since they were on local Hotline release in the US in the 60s and indeed were even reissued as a result on Action records.

Dx

PS Just remmbered I forgot Get Yourself Together - the best of the lot.

Al Green's superb autobiography, 'Take Me To The River' is well worth checking out, lots of great info re the build up to getting his first big break with "Back Up Train'.

Some amazing stories, he was playing a roadhouse , surprise surprise, he didn't get paid! Neither did the support act/backing band, who just happened to be led by a chap called Willie Mitchell. Al was skint, so asked Willie for a lift to Memphis, they chatted in the car, and, as they say...the rest is history!!
