A few we've watched recently on player all based on true stories. Phantom of the Open about a guy who takes up golf and ends up entering  the Open, gentle British comedy with Mark Rylance.

  Nowhere Special, a slow burner set in Ireland about a dying father searching for adoptive parents for his young son. We thought it was very subtle  the way they showed all the things the father was going to miss, if all out action is your thing you probably will switch off after ten minutes 

  Lastly Jim Broadbent in The Duke ,another true story set in the early 60's ,Jim Broadbent plays a working class guy in the North East  who steals a famous painting.

Hi Mick One of my favourite Guillermo Del Toro films. I recently watched it again. Brilliant film

    Started the new year by watching one I've been saving for a rainy day , "Lee" starring Kate Winslet.

    No spoilers from me , suffice it to say it's the best thing I've seen for many a month and I wish I'd watched it sooner. 

    Currently watching “Lockerbie - A search for truth”

    Heart breaking stuff, opening episode extremely poignant. 
     

    Colin Firth masterly portrays Dr Jim Swire who’s daughter was a victim and who searches relentlessly for the truth behind the atrocity.

    Not sure if this has been mentioned but looking for something to watch the other night we stumbled upon "Lee".  Stars Kate Winslet about the former model turned wartime photographer Lee Miller.  Excellent film.

    Definitely Sky.  I watched it on NOW.  Very well-made biopic film, which is becoming quite the trend with Sky Originals of late.  'The Colour Room' was another Original that impressed me.  Anyone who's seen 'Lee' may also want to check out 'One Life', also on Sky Cinema / NOW - another war-time biopic based on Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton, who helped rescue hundreds of children from Czechoslovakia before the Nazi occupation closes its borders.

    I assume a “naughty stick” means ‘someone might be missing out’ with regards to revenue? Or am I wrong ?

    We watched 'Companion' at the weekend, went in blind after watching Mark Kemodes review where he said avoid any trailers or spoilers and it paid off, was an enjoyable 90 minutes, more thriller than horror

    Excellent.  I watched Kermode's review of this film too and it peaked my interest.  I agree with him that the trailer (which I saw at the cinema before a screening of Eggers' new Nosferatu) is totally spoiler-ridden, so it's a shame that I'd be going into this one knowing a lot of the premise already.  Would you say this is a film that is recommended for the big-screen experience, or not that necessary and it wouldn't matter a great deal just waiting for it to stream at home?

    Interesting point about the genre too.  Although the trailer presented some Horror elements and tropes, I thought the way it was edited made it look like a slick, yet fairly twisted, Thriller with a drop of dark humour to boot.

    Regarding big screen/home format,  I would say either, nothing be really lost/gained apart from the normal advantages with whichever format for me

    On the horror/thriller call, it was only a 15 cert and  my wife who is most definitely a non-horror fan says was a bit violent but not too gory and enjoyed it

    This is on the to watch list after some positive reviews.

    I try and avoid all trailers these days as half the film and most of the good bits seem to be in them nowadays 😕

    Thanks Mike, appreciate it.  One to think about if free for some movie-going, but not desperate to see it.

    MARCHING POWDER You were right mate, the best bits were in the trailer. A pub oldies night would have been more fun.
