At the risk of starting another controversial thread How many peeps do you know that are Promoters but do not actually DJ themselves. In my experience most promoters have either DJ'd in the past, are DJ's on the current scene or 'aspire' to be DJ's and use their own venue to feed their urges.

Am I unique in the fact that although I have been co-promoting Soul Nights @ Bridgwaterfor 4 years now

I have never had the inclination to DJ myself (other than at our summer Soul-B-Q's in our garden that is).

on a much smaller scale my good friend jason mills doesnt dj but with me is co promoting the morecambe weekender 27th to 29th april

he loves the music with a passion

Me! I don't DJ and don't even own enough records to do an hour's spot. Bournemouth lost it's regular soul night so I thought I'd step in and keep it going Besides, I couldn't DJ as it would mean I wouldn't be able to dance all night

Dont know about that , DJaying/promoting is a thankless task sometimes , you need the skin of a rhino !!

Matt Jahans didnt DJ when he promoted the Dome.

As Mark says, Chris Waterman today, but also Andrew Bin (Soul Sourcer) doesnt DJ at any of the Soul Commandoes nights or allnighters.

Kevin and Paul who promoted the ill fated Rocket all nighters didnt either.

Pete from Bentinck does a great job promoting his and Cressy's soul night but I don't think he's ever done any djing

You don´t! didn´t, do you now nearly got done in thanks to Rob Marriott while doing the door for you!!(Chesterfield) but must admit it was fun!

Des Parkers brother used to promote soul nights in Gloucester(roundabout( really well and he didn´t need to dj,as there were so many locals offering to do it for nothing! ´cause of that got regular "name" guests down and always full

I have managed to combine promoting and DJing when I have had a venue running , but doing both certainly takes a strain on you during the time you have the place running .....

Firstly - promoter's cap on - standing on the door is a necessary evil : you have to be there to welcome and chat to your patrons , checking door receipts , giving out publicity for your next event , looking over at record boxes that are brought in , wandering what you are missing whilst you are standing there

etc. ..... but all the time you are there , you want to get up behind the decks and play tunes .....

Secondly - DJ's cap on - whilst you are behind the decks , you are keeping an eye out as to what is going on , who is coming in , what is in that new record box that somebody has just brought in etc . ....

These things mess with your mind , sometimes making you want to get your spot over and done with .....

Catch 22 .....

I have been DJing for 39 years , and have combined DJing and promoting for 36 of those 39 years .....

I would not have it any other way .......

pete from bentinck top promoter who travels all over the notts and derbys area handing out the flyers and who is also one of the nicest blokes you could hope to meet on the scene. i cant make his event due to work commitments but if he ever put one on a saturday i would be there. its people like pete who keeps the scene going and he really keeps the faith

i play a few records while i'm doing the sound check (when theres no one in) thats as far as it goes, i hate it and can't wait to get off the stage, much prefer to listen to other people

hello i run east kirkby miners welfare i love promoting and djing but im new to them both i used to do a bit of djing yrs ago but it used to be pop stuff (YUK) AND I CAN STILL remember the first record i ever interduced it was a group called kenny and the record was called the bump the venue was in stapleford notts the whole place was packed and i interoduced it as the kenny by the bump and i felt like a right plonker so some of you are saying nothing nothing changed there then i still get things the wrong way round introducing records the wrong way but i dont care now im 48 yrs old so my minds going a bit so thats my excuse and im sticking to it have a great weekend all off you and if you around come see me make a plonker of my self at east kirkby miners welfare in notts i promise you i have got two other cracking djs in chris cooper from pilsley and glyn williams of soultime promotions and both of these no what they are doing top class music to be played by them

hi mikey, i only missed one of the rockets and the last two, kev and paul done the last spots and there were good ones, last time i saw kev was at the 100 club a few years back his wive just had a baby and paul was at jacks the other week, you right top blokes, janine with champagne go together like adam and eve, take care cheers billy

No Not unique debs, i haven't ever done it either, not whilst promoting my own events in Torquay

or co-promoting in newquay, although i have said few words on the mike ( honest only a few !! )

Oooh i have definelty had the inclination, only when the dj is pants and i want to get up there and push them off the decks !!

Parden me if i am wrong but the only promoting i see when i visit Soul functions around my area is the Door Bloke who try's to plant a kiss on the Ladys cheek and shake the fella's hand and use the imortal words of Thanx for comin mate..Job done...Sounds a bit creepy hey!! Me thinks this is a bit unhygeinic too!!! especially if the Door kisser has been recentlyMuffin etc and handled his Tallywacker too without washing..says a lot dont it..Soul Event promoting at its worst.

It's just like the thread on here about DJ'ing cliche's like, "last one from me before I hand you over to whoever" or "you've got me for the next hour" and "thanks to whoever for the last hour" ........ What else can you say? There isn't an alternative, and if you are promoting, you should be greatful that people are making the effort to travel to your event. There's plenty of hand shaking and cheek kissing going on when they get inside the venue, it's the way you greet your friends, and people you like, that's all.

Do you think I should dress down a bit as I seem to be sending the wrong messages out

not sure that the two things should be mixed. being a promoter is a full on thing, from the meet and greet, checking everything ok on the night, building contacts, mailing and phone databases, getting feedback, dealing with issues from the trivia upwards, and just generally doing stuff to build the event and ensure a happy crowd, not to mention to consider where improvements can be made..........if you then go missing to dj for a couple of hours it can leave a big hole in the service. And the promoter has to look at what his dj's do objectively.
