Is there anyway of estimating just how many Northern Soul records there are? (in all it's genres)

Can anyone take a guess? For myself I've no idea!

And is there a consensus on who has the best collection in the world - in terms of numbers or rarities....

Always thought that Tim Brown was numero uno in the collection stakes ?, as for "Best", i suppose it's that guy/girl who gets the most enjoyment from the records they own.

My girlfriends son says 6. (he is 6 BTW)

When I said I thought there would be more he used his stock answer.

"Miss Brady said so".

Once that arguement comes out, there is no shifting it.

would say hard to do accurate cause of the wide range

maybe anyone with a well defined database of 45s or cd tracks be able to give a shout

of a at least figure ?

It appears there aren't any. Well not if you are looking for a general concensus that a record can even be classed as Northern.

Perhaps the real answer is the number of unique tracks listed in Tim's and woodchip's US price guides plus woodchips soon to be released British price guide ohh and you better add in all the records played at Prestatyn, the Wilton, Lifeline etc that aren't in the guides. Ohh and nearly forgot everything I play that I class as Northern

In all it's genres? So including R&B, beat ballads, 70's, slightly funky staff that "avante garde" DJ's may spin on occasions, Sam's "80's" which get aired on "northern floors" etc etc etc....goodness knows.

I think the number of 30,000 was about right give or take a few thousand for traditional 60's early 70's uptempo records, but if you add in all these "fringe genres", who knows?

Bearing in mind (on going) new discoveries, master tapes/acetates - in all genres ... How could we possibly ever know?
