Perhaps the Wheel could be in the running as it was the first, but I doubt it. Torch wasn't really on long enough to be a contender. Blackpool was groundbreaking, but the allnighter?

Any other serious contenders?

Would be interesting to know at this stage of the scenes history, which all-nighter could be considered the overall most significant nighter?

I don't know that we need feel controversial on this. Just a big difference between nine years and twenty nine. I know they packed a lot into those nine years, but thirty years next year for the 100, that's pretty special, sorry, significant!

I never went to Wigan (I'm just a wee 30 something whippersnapper) but I did cut my Soul teeth down the hallowed steps of the 100 Club in the mid eighties. I still get the same tinge of excitement entering the place as I did 22 years ago and always leave with the feeling that I haven't been short changed by the DJ's. The fact that it has run for close to three decades makes it, in my opinion, untouchable. But time alone does not a legendary venue make - when considering the fact that its birth came after the so called glory years and then the number of tunes cut there, for me, gives it the edge over all others.

But as they say, the proof is in the eating and I still see many of the same faces as I did on my first visit in '86 - I wonder if the same could have been said of Wigan if it had had the same staying power?

My point was that you make the distinction of the length of tiime each venue has run. But its not a simple question because you are not comparing like with like.

Many venues were forced to close while still attracting big crowds.

In any event, I always find it amazing that people on here, and I don't necessarily mean you, can comment on past venues that they have never ever been too. I didn't do the Torch, Wheel and lots after.So I don't comment, even though I might have read books about them

If my maths are about right 100club 360ish Casino 432ish without the oldies Friday night but I could be miles out ....

For me there is no denying the 100 club is miles ahead of Wigan in the amount of quality tunes played, but the Casino had more atmosphere in one all Allnighter than the 100club could ever manage in 50years never mind 29years just ask anyone that has attended the two venues, I think most would agree but on this scene you never know .

It makes me wonder what the 100club would be like in a similar building as the Casino..................

Well if I had to come off the fence it'd probably bee the 100 Club for overall significance, because of the 29 years and the zero crap policy. But then where would the scene have been without Wigan?

Another subjective thing "zero crap". I heard tracks at Wigan that were crap. I've certainly heard 100 club tracks that are crap BUT most importantly that's just in my opinion.

The Twisted Wheel as that was where it all really started

For bums on seats, atmosphere and sheer youthful exuberance (or so I'm told) - Wigan

For consistency and quality over a long period of time - 6Ts

For me....Warrington Parr Hall. Why? Because it ticked all the allniter boxes for me - big crowds, great post Stafford sounds, men in shorts and the best times ever for me outside the mod scene

And by the way I didn't go to the Wheel Ian before you ask But my mum did

Yes Robin played some top new sounds, and downstairs some great 60s discoveries were played, but there arent that many 'Leicester' sounds, so the influence factor isnt there. Similar story to Morecombe around the same time/ just after IMO.

Many of the Stafford tunes were obviously also 100 club tunes at that time. With Ady and Clarky playing all the top tunes got played there too.

As for rubbish at Stafford, I always trot out the same 3

The Wheel laid the foundations for all - nighters , and whatever all - nighter came after it , they have all contributed to that building we call the soul scene .........

I do not think we can say , or anyone can state / elect , that one was better than another - It is a matter of personal choice what all - nighter " did it for you " .........

I often wonder how high the benchmark for all - nighters would have been set at , if The Mecca had been one .......

Views it all it is. I could just say I thought it would be the 100 Club for example. Thirty years next year. That's quite something. Got me thinking with the amount of (good) stuff played at one venue over that period of time could be deemed as influential, significant etc etc. Whether that evolution of spins in that place for that time has had more impact than 73 - 81 period of time? The scene is supposed* to be stronger than ever at the moment*?

It must be possible to ask the question, speaking generally which allnighter has been the most influential down the years.

it's not about how long a venue has been running,this is not the measure of quality.sometimes it's a handicap.The wheel must be included because it started it all really. The torch will be my option just because it was my first nighter and had such an impact.the most significant must be wigin because it was so good and so bad in equal measures 73 to 77 underground and brilliant 77 onwards the shittiest place ever.In the last couple of years it's burnley...why,because it's the best underground venue since the 70's.There has been plenty of good,good venues,but these are the ones that capture the very essence of the nighter scene. tezza
