  1. hi smudger , bet your on about les genders , still see him knocking about today , he still lives in bentley , got a big reggae collection he's trying to get rid of , or he was last time i saw him , he's got bigger to. i was a bit young for the attic , but went to the drum when they had the northern soul nights , bet we no a lot of the same people. all the best john Yep it was Mr Genders ain't seen him for years always remember him being really tall ,and also remember broken wheel at Retford (some lasses from Retford used to come through to Donny every weekend),Mick Gaskill ang Adj are a couple of other names we used to knock around with,.saw Adj at the attic re-union in 90's ran by Al Taylor at Motel at Balby A1 roundabout. Great memories
  2. At our local Doncaster soul nighter The Attic in the old co-op emporium ballroom over the top of the shop up about 5 flights of stairs, first it was mainly mods and kids into soul,Bluebeat and ska records used to get played but not that many.Mainly soul and as i remember about 69 that's when we started taking more of an interest in reggae. We used to go to the Drum back room in Bentley (Friday night) and that was mainly reggae Upsetters {Clint Eastwood) Hippie Boys {Reggae Pressure) and loads of other obscure label items.Pete Smiths site really brought some memories back looking at some old reggae labels i'd forgotten about .Ben Sherman's , jeans with sewn up turn ups at half mast or stay press red braces and Docs. were the order of the day.Always remember one night walking into back room of drum and looking around to see if any of mates were in ,not seeing anyone went to bar when i was accosted by the biggest skinhead who accused me of looking at him and wanted to sort me out. That was my first encounter with Big Les from Bentley. We used to go to jumbo's at Leeds looking for records always remember them selling loads of reggae. We still used to listen to soul as well ,a massive record in Doncaster when it first came out was Honk Kong Flu (Ethiopians I think ?),can't remember the racism being a factor at all though all mates together. You know how it is when the charts were full of reggae it all seemed to die a death for us,plus people started pairing up and drifting off never to be seen again so we all got back into soul, although still love to hear a long lost reggae tune.
  3. R.I.P. and thanks for all the great music over the years. R&B Singer Major Harris Passed Away RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Major Harris, a former member of the ‘‘Philadelphia sound’’ soul group the Delfonics and singer of the 1975 hit ‘‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait,’’ has died in Richmond. He was 65. His sister, Catherine Thomas, told The Associated Press that Harris passed away Friday morning from congestive heart and lung failure after being rushed to a hospital. The Richmond native was born Feb. 9, 1947, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a guitarist and his mother led the church choir, Thomas said. In his teens, Harris was tall for his age and was able to get into clubs to watch musicians perform, she said. ‘‘He always appeared to be older, which gave him a lot of ins to a lot of older places,’’ Thomas joked. She said he didn’t drink in the clubs back then, but he was pursuing his career. Music, she said, ‘‘was his life.’’ Harris made the rounds with several music groups in the 1960s, including the Charmers, Frankie Lymon’s Teenagers and Nat Turner’s Rebellion. He then joined the Delfonics in the early 1970s, replacing Randy Cain in the group known for their hits ‘‘La-La (Means I Love You)’’ and ‘‘Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time).’’ Harris left the group in 1974 to pursue a solo career. He recorded a string of R&B singles, including ‘‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait,’’ which peaked at No. 5 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified as a gold record by the Recording Industry Association of America. The song was covered by Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams in 1994 and again by Luther Vandross on his 1988 album ‘‘Any Love.’’ Harris last performed in 2011 at a reunion show with some of the members of the Delfonics, Thomas said. this is also on on a Brazilian 7" E.P. with Its got to be magic/Ruby Lee/I got over love

And those of us did Yep those were the days, used to carry a box of records round (still got the box) and a Discatron(portable french record player, now long gone) and go to local park Cussy Hill and laze around in the sun on a sunny weekend playing sounds to anyone who gathered around. The Discatron you slot record into top and press right hand button which clamped record and started it spinning then needle was forced onto record at beggining at a pressure of about 2 tons.still got Washed ashore by platters on musicor that was played thousands of times on this and is now totally F'd. 21. Extract from the instructions The Vinyl Flat Record Flattener furnishes the required amount of pressure (on precise areas of the record using vinyl-safe materials). The other elements - heat and time - are furnished by you. For a heat source, we suggest our optional Groovy Pouch. You may also use a standard kitchen oven or a small convection toaster oven. With that in mind, the two most important rules to follow when repairing vinyl records with an oven as the heat source are "LOW"Â and "SLOW"Â. Love the idea of putting a 7" in the toaster!!!! NOT i

Just had this for the first time ever, $40 record added vat £5.06p handling charge £8 from post office( was still well worth it though) but a shock all the same. Here's how it reads:- Customs charges are applied to imports into the EU with a value over £15 for vat (imports from the channel islands the value is £0}.All items valued over £135 will attract import duty.Imported gifts valued over £40 sent between private individuals will also attract vat' For more info see UK Border Agency website search "Notice 143" https://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/customs-travel/customs/postal/

This is from the previous thread Read this in Manship's auction listing re: ZZ: "Authentic Original! Quick check in case you own the inferior sound quality counterfeit. THE ORIGINAL dead wax has a deeply scratched matrix reading MRP/FR-JB - 51679 -"GRFTG" - Re2 . COUNTERFEIT Lightly scratched matrix FRJB - 51679 - A .then half a turn TLP. Surely the original with strong sound quality is the only 45 worth owning." I bought a few copies of this 45 from the artist about 16 months back; he had some of each press. When I inquired about the difference I was told the MRP/FR-JB - 51679 is the technical first press, but it was delivered flawed, poor quality vinyl, most copies skipped, so he then reordered with a different plant and the FRJB - 51679 was born. If there is an inferior press, the first would be it. To my ear they both play "loud" the FRJB - 51679 is just on better quality vinyl. I don't know where or what base the rumor of a "COUNTERFEIT" started but I believe the artist has no reason to poorly remember or lie about these things. Anyway, maybe someone can enlighten me; not trying to talk down John's auction, I just don't believe the FRJB - 51679 is a boot, although there may be a boot of the 45 out there too.
