  1. still trying to complete my marvin gaye singles i.e. us demo,us issue, uk demo & uk issue of every release (in ex+ or M-) = now seem to have hit a brick wall when it comes to the gaps, mind you i am a bit hit and miss when it comes to time spent trying to track them down. Aside from MG i try and buy any of the records i have always wanted plus any i come across that i like whether they are cheap or expensive - but i will only go for ones i like - i dont buy rare records i think are not great to listen to. Youtubing a record i like is a great way to hear 'similar' records that i dont know with the suggestions it comes up with. Trawling soul source, dealers sites (some are great for listening to clips..).

you could try reducing the stylus weight as it could be putting too much force on the disc and effectively holding it back. I would check all the tone arm settings. I have seen blu-tack applied to the slip mat but i think this is just covering up the real issue - decks not set up properly.
  3. spot on maslar! I would not be bothered about falling prices. If i wanted to trade a £100 record for another £100 record today, it would be the same to me if i did the deal in 5 years when they were both worth £50. & the same monthly spend on records will buy twice as many if the prices dropped by half. A price drop would of course hit those hoping to 'cash in' on a collection acquired at todays prices if the market drops.
  4. At the end of 'the night' the dj says "it doesn't get any more soulful than that" - he must have a rather small collection then (perhaps kept in that little bag with the lizard on top)....
  5. Really grateful for the opportunity to play a few at what was a fun day with such an enthusiastic crowd. Special mention must go to Tony Ellis (author of 'how to do northern soul properly' & long time dj) for a very memorable set and of course every one else played a part in a really good day. my contributions ( ALL OV) were; Artist Track Label Issue SET 1 4;15pm to 5;00pm Lorraine rudolph Keep coming back for more Jetstream US Issue Lyrics So glad Crescendo US Issue Bobbie smith Walk on into my heart American arts US Demo Stoppers Come back baby Jubilee US Issue Bobby sheen Something new to do Warner bros US Issue Brenda starr Satan let me sleep tonight Polydor US Demo Majestics I love her so much it hurts me Linda US Demo Sandra phllips You succeeded Broadway US Issue Jimmey soul clark Come on and be my sweet darlin Soulhawk US Issue Fabulous peps With these eyes Wee US Issue Roy hamilton You shook me up Rca victor US Issue Patti austin Didn't say a word Columbia US Issue Gospel classics More love that’s what we need Checker US Demo Showmen wrong girl Minit US Issue Alfie davison Love is a serious business Mercury US Demo Velvet hammer Happy Soozii US Issue Jackie wilson It only happens when I look at you Brunswick UK Demo Choice of color Your love APT US Issue SET 2 9;45pm to 10;30pm Kim weston I'm still loving you Tamla US Demo Linda jones I just cant live my life Warner bros US Issue Ivorys Please stay Despenza US Issue Eddie holman I surrender ABC US Issue Edward hamilton Baby don’t you weep Maryjane US Issue Servicemen Need a helping hand Wind hit US Issue Cairos Stop overlooking me Shrine US Issue Cautions No other way Shrine US Issue Sonny till Tears & misery Rca US Demo Jesse fisher Your not loving a beginner Way out US Issue Luther ingram If its all the same to you Hib US Issue Four Pro's Just another girl Carla US Issue Al gardner Sweet baby Googa mooga French Issue Ringleaders Baby what has happened to our love M-pac US Issue Hesitations Is this the way to treat a girl Gwp US Issue Calvin grayson You've got to be willing In US Issue O'jays I'll never forget you Imperial US Demo Steve mancha Friday night Groovesville US Issue Bobby paris I walked away Capitol US Demo
  6. worse kind of 'div' is those that continue to drink on the dancefloor after being politely asked not to and explained why. If people want to wear what i regard as ridiculous outfits that doesn't bother me - each to his own etc.. However whenever I have asked someone 'why the baggy trousers' they usually say you need them to dance properly - my reply is go and watch some footage of Jackie Wilson or James Brown.

Agree great record. I have the atac issue so what is the shorter version you refer to because i thought the mala issue was the same?

I just think 5 or 6 of those beeps would be enough - the rest i love!

Following recent topic on 'best intros' what about the worst intros for what then turns into a good record....... cant imagine why they thought this intro needed to be so long... (mind you it was also credited to GENO instead of GINO by mistake)

i thought this would be the obvious one but not mentioned yet - not so much a 'call to the floor' more a 'command that cannot be disobeyed'
  11. I've just done the maths & based on rough value of my records and 'fees' earned over the last year it will take me over 250 years to get into profit and that doesn't allow for expenses and assumes i wont buy any more records seriously though i agree with Len and where 'big name' dj's are playing especially with exclusive sounds then they deserve a proper reward. e.g. Lifeline where i only managed to get to a few times i would have paid £25. I also think the promoters of any quality event deserve a decent profit - i can only imagine the risk, stress and work that goes into putting on a decent event - when i have d'jd i just have to turn up with a box of records.... at the other end of the scale i dont want to travel and pay good money to hear dj's play re-issues.
  12. Being a small name (or in fact 'no name at all!) I have been paid £60 for between 45 mins & 90 mins at dos with say 150 to 200 in attendance down to nil at others when they aren't making any money/free events. When i've been paid the missus has also got in free and they are probably events that we would have been happy to pay and attend anyway even if not d'jing.
  13. £10 for Nuneaton allniter is too cheap! I'm not saying I know what you should be charging just that that is a lot of value for £10 compared to other forms of entertainment. My Reading FC season ticket costs me about £20+ per game for 90 minutes and is often a let down whereas I have never failed to enjoy a soul do.
  14. Agree 100% with Andybellwood. The quality events are good value e.g. Cleethorpes weekender for approx £40 must work out about £1 per hour and Maxine Brown last year was probably worth the bets part of that on her own! On the other hand i have been to some free local do's that were overpriced!!
  15. Trying to re-create a 'dukes of hazard' scene in my beloved Cortina 1600e by driving straight over a roundabout - although i manage to get a few quid selling off some spares...........
  16. Cant really add much to what has already been said just grateful that there are dos every weekend if i want with a range to suit all soul music tastes and not feel out of place at my age... with likeminded friendly people. Never thought that would be case 20/30+ years ago. At a do last year there was an 88 year old and a 22 year old on the dance floor at the same time (admittedly they were dancing in slightly different styles..) - that shows the power of this music. However in some ways i feel sorry for the youngsters cause it may have been better for them if the scene had died in the 90's say and they could have discovered and re-ignited it for themselves.. I will keep going out as long as the body will allow - there is no alternative that i can think of.
  17. I have always paid for records the day the deal is agreed (usually within the hour) either paypal or bank transfer. I usually ask the seller for +feedback and only sometimes get it. It may be a pain for sellers that do a lot of business, but then by leaving feedback (both + & - as appropriate) they could help themselves and other sellers by knowing who the better buyers are.
  18. I had a reply to a want with seller saying think it is mint in which case want £XXX OVNO, I replied to say ok if mint I will pay £xxx incl p&p. I had no reply evne after a follow up pm.... maybe seller thought he could get more elsewhere which is fine but a response would be nice.
  19. Hi, just put it in the fund..
  20. beer fridge built in - nice one!
  21. Hi Baz, found 'Home & Legacy' who would insure quite a large value of vinyl records under our home contents and buildings insurance. They are covered all risks anywhere in the world. (I am pretty sure dj'ing is not covered though!). I queried with them what i would need in the event of a claim & they said "We would be asking to see an inventory of your collection and proof of ownership which could be photographs if you no longer have receipts, our claims team would have their own sources to check values." The cost was approx £100 per year above our quote from 'More than insurance'. atb rich
  22. Hi, just done ppal. well done - great fundraising idea!
  23. Hi Kev, the mrs made it using an unplayable copy of just a little misunderstanding (i've got a better copy!)- she got the clock bit on ebay i think.
  24. Love the matching record boxes! we had an extension to the back of the lounge/dining room built on and also have a dancefloor - if i take away the mrs' mats. The camera on tripod is set up to photo all records for the insurance - keeps me quiet of an evening.
