The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
The scene is disappearing up its own arse. It's too fractured, too much back criticism between folk, not enough patience for other's tastes or views, the punters are getting older, the music is getting ancient and with improving technology it's easier than ever to hear the music in some shape or form without having to leave your house. A diminishing number are interested in collecting records. It ceased to be trendy, exciting or underground quite a long time ago. The differentiation should be the experience and enjoyment factor on a night out. People can't be bothered to travel far, local soul nights can be ok but generally not very good. It's incredible that it's lasted this long but there's no point worrying about it. It'll carry on with a small number ageing diehards continuing to have a good time.

Prelude Label
The later Prelude label was very good too, if you're that way inclined. Gerald Mallory, D-Train, Bobby Thurston all had great releases there.

Nick Ashford Rip
RIP Nick. Along with Valarie, one the best songwriters ever. So many classics over the years recorded by them and other artists from their Motown era, disco classics and 80s soul. PS. RIP to Jerry Lieber too.

Soul On Spotify?
Not much is the short answer. Just the CDs you'd typically see in a big HMV (or used to!). Quite a bit of good soul though.

The Javells - Goodbye Nothin To Say
Was this recorded before Maxine Nightingale's "Right Back Where We Started From"? A did Maxine basically plagiarise it?

Hi Lorraine It's an honour to have you here among us. "I Can't Hold On" is still one of my favourite records of all time. You must have had a blast recording that. "Mend The Torn Pieces Of My Heart" is a fantastic peice of music too. Dave

Recent Cd Comps - Any Words ?
Expansion have released two new CDs recently in their Soul Togetherness series. The Spirit of Philadelphia Vol 3 is fantastic and maintains the high standard of the previous 2. It contains awesome tracks for the first time on CD such as Sharon Paige "New To You" and the in demand Sharon McMahon "Get Out Of My Life". The CD gets a bit down tempo towards the end but the quality is still strong. The other is the Skip Scarborough Songbook, celebrating the late, great songwriters work. He wrote some classic songs and included on this comp are lesser known versions of some his well known numbers such as Dionne Warwick's "Can't Hide Love" and LTDs "Love Ballad" . Also, there are classics by The Emotions, Phyllis Hyman and Patti Labelle which a lot of people will be familar with. Some of the tracks don't quite hit the spot and I'd say it's more interesting than essential. Having said that, Earth, Wind & Fire's "Earth, Wind & Fire" is awesome!

The One Show
I very much doubt it. Aside from a small number of hardcore devotees, oldies fans and internet enthusiasts - it's popularity is very low. Perhaps it's better that way.

Bretby County Club- 20 Year Anniversary
Bretby was my first allnighter in 1996, having not taken much interest in northern soul for 10 years. It was Chris King's 40th birthday bash with three rooms and a marquee for record dealers. It was a fantastic night. I remember hearing stuff I hadn't heard for years like Detroit Executives, Marie Knight, Ad Libs which I never appreciated before. I didn't expect to hear anything I'd know in the modern room but heard Mary J. Blige, Blackstreet, Maze, Incognito and sother great stuff. Gavin Page was on form. Everyone was very friendly and it reinspired me to get back into it, so I have a very soft spot for Bretby.

Playing Funk Records At Soul Venues
Rose Batiste. Yes Pete, it's one of the all time greats but I just use it as an example that even the most fantastic records eventually wear with time. To hear something a bit different is good. Maybe these funky type tunes don't fit in with the typical northern soul beat but there's been plently of exceptions over the years. At least it's moving forward a bit in time!
