I remember a few of us once in a transit van on our way to the Carousel broke down on the M62 right next to the little house on the prairie. As we were stood about on the hard shoulder I thought bolloxs to this and decided to walk to the next exit (Saddleworth Moor junction 22) as you do. Think it was around midnight-ish and the motorway was quiet and near deserted. Only walked a few hundred yards when I heard a car approaching from behind so I stuck my thumb out ( as you did in them days)and the driver just clamped all on (I can vividly recall the car weaving about as it braked hard with smoke coming off its tyres). Another lad from our van saw what was happening and set off running up the road to catch up with me. We jumped in the car and told the driver where we were going and he dropped us off outside Manchester Town Hall. Nice One. When we got in the taxi and told him where we wanted to go - the driver turned round and with a sharp intake of breath said summat like "what you going there for?" then promptly dropped us off a hundred yards or so from the club as he didn't want to pull up outside. Used to absolutely love going The Temple Of Convenience before The Ritz all-nighters in Manchester circa late 1990's. Good old vinyl rascals like Dean Johnson, Alan Darker & Phil Wainwright spring to mind. DJ'd there a few times as well. The dance floor was shit and the one cubicle toilet was no better. Infact the toilet was bigger than the dancefloor; come to think of it there was no dancefloor. Now they were happy days. derek x I'm laughing as I'm typing this as I just remembered getting myself locked in the / that toilet cubicle once? I'd somehow closed / locked the door behind me or whatever (toilets like that were expressly forbidden by law not to have locks on....) and somehow the door / cubicle frame shifted and I couldn't pull the door open from the inside. Don't forget toilets like that were expressly forbidden by law not to have any sort of handle on....Had to ask a girl that was stood outside the cubicle to push on the door. You just can't make these things up. And they say good comedy writes itself..........

To answer Pete's opening question - Why hasn't Berry Gordy written an autobiography or why hasn't anybody ever really interviewed him in depth warts an' all without his lawyer constantly looking over every word? Maybe he has and I've missed it. Derek

Hate to be the one to mention it again but as many of us on here have well passed the 50 mark that 3 letter word begins with A and ends in E has a bearing on everything we do. The nights of WC were over 30 years ago when most of us had 20 inch waists and lorry loads of enthusiasm. If we could go back in time to Station Road I bet the top 3 most overheard comments would be - I were buggered after climbing all those stairs to get in - Ooh it were too warm - Ooh and there weren't enough seats. And most decent folk were simply too frightened to even talk about the T word (To, Toi, Toil....) For me anyway the days of going radio rental at venues have long gone. I've been round the block so many times I've got parking tickets. Things change and we all bend and sway like a willow in the wind. We can't always have a great time when we go out. Derek x

True. And considering that going out to a soul club should just be a simple enjoyable night out it probably always has been too serious for its own good. Top 3 labels that only have one known release which is a classic: Topic title edited to: Best three Records On Labels That Are One-Offs (you're right George that does read better) With such a lengthy topic title let me explain how it became so........ The continual list maker in me loved compiling or starting to compile label discographies and it was back in 2007 that I started delving into a certain label out of Louisville, Kentucky. Now I'd only ever seen one release on this imprint but was delighted to obtain details of a second 45 that slipped out later barely un-noticed. My thread bare notes soon got submerged way deeper than deep into my hard drive and were forgotten about until I stumbled upon them purely by chance a week or so ago. On re-reading my scribbles I suddenly thought of an interesting sort of thread but as I was developing what words to use another possible thread (which I don't think has been covered before) came screaming out of somewhere/nowhere to take first spot. What labels have only ever had one known release and that solitary lone 45 has become a rock solid bona fide nailed on ball banging classic? And then mi mind went blank. Phut. The light was on but nobody was home. Nothing was coming out. I'd thought of a question but couldn't think of a single answer to it. And I didn't cheat by wading through various guides or spending hours on the web and yes I know I'll be mildly embarrassed possibly by the answers other readers might send in. So I ask again what labels have only ever had one known release and that solitary lone 45 has become a rock solid bona fide nailed on ball banging classic? And from that list what would be the Top 3. The only answer that popped into my mind (eventually) was the Bonnie label and their one-off never to be repeated Magnetics 45. That's gotta be in the top 3 surely. Any ideas for the other 2? Liverpool’s Lack Of Soul Now at the risk of sounding scousist I've always wondered why Liverpool hasn't had a major impact on our soul club scene. For a major city it defined youth music culture during the sixties with the emergence of the Beatles & the ‘Cavern Club’. When punk spat its way into the late seventies 'Erics' was the place to be. 'Cream' became one of the first super clubs on the house scene throughout the nineties. On a football point of view they've got 2 major premiership teams and their followers took football hooliganism onto new levels during the eighties. So youth wise Liverpool and the Merseyside area has really marked its place out on UK street culture. But why no northern scene as such within the L postcode? I mean given its close proximity to Wigan Casino (yawn) and all the big clubs in Manchester you'd have thought it would have spawned loads of venues of its own. Alright there's The Sink nowadays and I'm led to believe it’s been going from the sixties in one way or another. Baz Maleady and his gang ran the much respected Saints Club in St Helens throughout the 90s. But of all the books and magazines I've ever read the city gets few if any mentions. Maybe I'm reading the wrong books, maybe I'm talking shite (and thats why my breath smells) but I'd like to read other peoples thoughts on this matter. Maybe somebody from that area will post up and say I'm talking rubbish and give evidence to shoot down my ideas? derek In all my years I've never actually been to a soul cub in Liverpool the nearest has been the afore mentioned Saints and the Viaduct in Newton Le Willows. Has there been any funk clubs in Liverpool Town?

Over the weekend I intended adding to this thread but kept getting sidetracked and didn't. I was gonna say summat like "As we get older we forget how long we've known some people, as the years turn slowly but very quickly into decades. Fairly certain I first met Salmon in the mid to late eighties and soon recognised him as a 'good lad'. He knew his records and was always after more. Our paths didn't cross for a long long time until he started coming over to Paul Harris's Bradford soul nights last year. We carried on chatting and having a laugh like we'd always done previously oblivious to the long gap in seeing each other. We traded some records and I got a long time want off him. To be honest I can't recall the last time I actually went to Rochdale (not sure if going to Mick Howard's in Heywood counts), think it might have even been one of Salmon's soul nights at Spotland (home of Rochdale FC) years ago and I hoped I wouldn't be next going to the town for all the wrong reasons. But as things turned out it sadly looks like I will be visiting Rochdale very soon to pay my last respects. Salmon was one of the old school and very much a part of the fabric of this weird and wonderful scene of ours. He will be much missed by many. Take care fella wherever you may land. Derek
