  5. Always enjoyed chatting with Mona at the YMCA, he was definitely a great character. I know Mick McNulty wherever he is at the moment will be gutted too, he goes back even further with Mona. RIP Graham
  6. Came on early to tone down my comments and language of last night, if I offeneded anyone then I apologise. However to clarify. My main concern with the thread was that having read the references to Ford, Wilson and then Hemingway it was going to develop into a celeb spotting fest - something that was done to death some time ago. Regarding the old guard, I remember meeting a lot of people from all over the country who had a distinguished pedigree on the scene and I'm sure most of the younger element who attended knew them by sight or reputation from their own localities. I was 21 when I went in Sept 73 and judging by the age of some of the people who have posted would be considered older. The old gurd I refer to had clocked up a lot more miles than me. Don't believe in the name dropping thing but needless to say the corridor to/from Mr Ms and the record bar were a haven from Hawaii 5-0 and My Heart's Symphony. But again that's also another thread.
  7. Just read the first link . For F***s sake enough's enough ............we're straying into celebs who 'adored' northern soul territory and that's been done to death before - smack round the head for the first one to mention ginger top Hucknall. Of course there was an old guard who still went - who do you think populated the top corridor ?
  8. Nice to see Jack and Steve Elliot getting some recognition.
  9. Wasn't this featured in an old thread with speculation about how many were actually pressed. Mentioned in Clive Richardson's book also - believed to be 300.
  10. Spot on Dave - I really wonder why tosh like this even warrents mention on this site - how easy the marketing people suck people into believing this is the next big thing - first we had Plan B or whatever and he soon nailed his colours to the mast and sailed off to try another direction. The whole thing epitomises what we all steadfastly tried to avoid in the 60s and 70s.
  11. Not sure about the sex but were they sneaky back-drops Sam dropped in there ?????????? Graham
  12. Check out Custer's Last Band on Youtube - a passable Dig You Act and Showdown amongst the selections available if you enjoy blue -eyed soul bands
  13. Anyone checked out the Chameleon LP version - can't find my copy at present - wonder if they used a different take - not played it in a long time but will dig deeper tomorrow am.
  14. Yes - thanks Jaco - a bit more constructive than my earlier knee-jerk reaction in #10
  15. You tosser !
  16. Very droll Mr Smith.....as my learned fellow Derbian Mr McDonald pointed out young Hector (from Selecta) is John Heathcote and is in fact the same Hector that went 'down sarf ' to work in Red Records. Besides rubbing shoulders with aforementioned Dr Robert of Blow monkeys fame the lucky sod got to meet the legend that is Curtis Mayfield when they got together on a collaborative project.
  17. Nothing like this when I attended the old Poly 71-74, us northern soul fans were few and far between - in fact you could count us on the fingers of one hand. As it coincides with the monthly Wheel session might make a trip from Derby worthwhile.
  18. Just revisiting this fascinating thread when I noticed flip side to the Japanese version of The Horse different from the usual issue - apologies if any other eagle eyed reader spotted the phonetic translation used (gave up at page 4) - check it out at posting #127 on page 3 Love is All Light - p***ed myself !
  19. Right as usual young man - Mel Palmer and Trevor Beckett ran the Yeoman. Mel did indeed take on or manage the Blue Note for quite a while, what a gent - well remember him letting myself and good friend out the back door into the yard and over the wall after a minor fracas involving a couple of off-duty CID in the club !! Believe he now runs, or used to run a bar in Leicester can't remember the name ! regards Graham
  20. Just to keep things in perspective it was Buzzy And Boycie who had the amusing idea of featuring durophet capsules on the invite to their leaving do when they went off to Canada in the mid 70s ( still got mine in a scrapbook somewhere ) Hector used to DJ at Cleos and think he may have played at Station Rd in the very very early days. It was his old boss at RE Cords and the Blue Note Dave Milton that emigrated to Australia - still out there. John Hector Heathcote shared a flat in London with Dr Robert of Blow Monkey's fame where he got to meet the legendary Curtis Mayfield as part of some project. He spends most of his time now creating mash ups - he was regularly posting on You tube earlier this year. That's as much as I am prepared to divulge ! regards to Paula and good luck with your new venture at the Spa He is back in Derby
  21. Anyone got a copy they'd like to liberate ? please pm with details thanks Graham
  22. Stick with your initial thought, my immediate reaction also was that it was the Beau Dollar version
