Superlatives On Uptite
HI ALL.... Now I have always thought the pale blue & the pale yellow with 2 stripes, were pressed in Canada for the US market only as seen on a few RIC-TIC 45s, however they also booted the blue label with 2 lines, By the way the B side is Superlative? oh yes it is DAVE K

Twisted Wheel Collection
HI ALL. .The thing I liked in this thread was the issue of how to straighten up the list? how sad, still this was one of the few chances to get some classics cheap and the basis for a collection, shame the big stuff was missing, can't see why the big ones were missing, unless the seller removed them, how much did he get for them?? Bobby Wells Let's Copp A Groove
HI ALL... Interesting I am sure SOUL CITY had original copies of "cop a groove" plus "be that way" in stock prior to the BEACON release? however even if they did, maybe it did get a limited bootleg run? need to see a scan of it, In 72 "be that way" was a big TORCH sound and had become very hard to find a decent copy, and I'm sure that was never booted, also it would have mad a good BEACON release, I remember, (going of subject) finding other great records on BEACON, the CHI LITES "LOVE BANDIT" was a hard one to find in 72 DAVE K

Bobby Wells Let's Copp A Groove
HI ALL... NEVER BOOTED. Both versions were big plays at the TWISTED WHEEL 69 both played from the US COPY. The 1st BEACON copy was almost impossible to order, problems at pressing plant meant the release was 1 month early BEACON used the YELLOW label on all 1st issues. making "lets cop a groove" rare. my 1st copy was on the white EMI dist label from 1970. If the record was BOOTED I have never seen one DAVE

Mr. Mark Dobson Aka Butch
HI ALL...MARK (BUTCH) DOBSON #KING SPINNER from SOUL ON TRENT. A TRUE SOULSTER, TOP COLLECTOR, KIND FREIND. BUTCH is without doubt a TOP Geezer, with huge knowlage of SOUL music,...comeing from Stoke Mark was weened on Northern SOUL surrounded by many mentors from this important town/s. Not sure when he started going to Wigan Casino, although I can remember Big Tim buying records from myself Ady, Mick Smith & Pete Wid however he must at some time, (77 Wigan was full of Kids) many younger people got into the NORTHERN SCENE, & SOME OF THE TOP NAMES TODAY, COME FROM THIS DEMOGRAPHIC, Mark landed up in Mr M's doing a DJ spot right up to the place closed (I think?) It was the mid 8ts that MICK SMITH Introduced me, and for many years we would all meet up at KEELE, selling records at KEELE was a happy time for me, and the regular dealers (Dave * Louise, Mick & myself BUTCH & Big Tim had a corner that become ours) in this period I got to see Mark as a person with humanistic qualities who showed great empathy & positive regard towards under privileged people, in recent times most of my US SOUL 45s I have got from BUTCH, and I can recommend to all SOULSOURCE MEMBERS as one of the best dealers for RARE SOUL, Mark like many friends of mine is kind and sensitive towards my own issues, he belongs to top end of the scene & like Mick Ady Clarky Taffy Randy Johnny Manship Keith Dave Welding Big Tim and all the good brothers & sisters, in-fact he is nearly as good as my mentor MICK SMITH. RIGHT ON MARK (BUTCH) DOBSON DAVE KILWORTH

Demo To Issue Timeline?
HI ALL...Good question UK Demos or Promotional copy not for sale, were pressed up on the first run from the A stamper, the DEMOS are not only collected for their unique labels, but also for the best sound quality, they were sent out to BBC radio & TV, ITA regions like REDIFUFUSION LONDON in particular shows like RSG (Ready Steady Go) & Kool Kats 11, Hospital Radio, PIRATE RADIO, Radio & TV shops, not often to Record shops?, normally 4 weeks before the release, however only a few were played as advanced listening on radio, the BEATLES I can remember hearing before release date that's all pre RADIO 1, shows like ROSKOS ROUND TABLE was one of the first to review new records, also DJs had a record of the week, The average run was 250 often less, also I can't recall seeing UK DEMOS until the 1970s and the small number of rare soul seemed to be impossible to find, with only a lucky few who were in the know! for me it was Mick Smiths record collection in the early 7ts that got me hooked on the rare British collecting scene, I have still got Mick original Atlantic DEMO of TAMI LYNNS classic, it cost me £1.50, most of the early Soul Scene rare stuff is worIth much more on a UK DEMO than the US first release with the exception of about 5, playing the US COPY is very UNCOOL DAVEK

Tamla Motown Tmg 1000-Kim Weston - Do Like I Do
HI ALL...Mick I Have to disagree with that valuation, the reason is it's limited number & it is only available as TMG1000 also other rare late TMG # such as TMG 864 is a good bench mark to value the rare issues, so although £50 seems OK, I think £70 would be right for a mint issue DAVE K

Otis Smith - Let Her Go
Hi All....Like many people my first copy of "let her go!" was the 2nd issue PERCEPTION with the instrument B side, the record is a different take from the original issue, I have always assumed the 2nd copy to have been legit similar to the Jerry Williams "if I asked you" CALLA reissue, however they may of come from the same source as the James Bounty "prove yourself a lady" maybe semi legit? Both copy's the 1st & 2nd are hard to value, as the 2nd copy has the instr on the B side, I suppose the !st copy is the to have, however you may be like myself and have both copies in your collection, BUSTER PEARSON ACTION 45, was an early cover up for KM at the TORCH as OTIS SMITH Dave k

Frank Wilson On Uk Tamla Motown
CHEERS PAUL.. Some times it's well worth asking the question as I did not know that info, the Abbey road acetates apart from EMIDISC were DICK JAMES MUSIC, NORTHERN SONGS, then APPLE took over, I have had REGGAE on APPLE ACITATES so there could well be some rare soul out there on APPLE, I have a few BLANK APPLE LP & 45 LABELS, WHICH COME FROM THE APPLE SHOP, They must be collectable but I don't think I would get much for them maybe £15 the pair A & B sides, I may be wrong, However they are not for sale. CHERS FOR THE INFO. .Dave K

Frank Wilson On Uk Tamla Motown
HI ALL....WHY AM I LOOKING AT TMG 1170 TODAY OF ALL DAYS.. Coz I can, and I have found something that I have never noticed before. Having tried to get a picture for you & failing, I will describe for you the MATRIX # at the 3 o clock position A. At the 9 o clock position ; . At the 6 o clock TMG 1170 A1, however on the outer groove underneath TMG 1170, it reads BLAiRS, now that could be I have Tony Blairs original copy, or some other Blair, as people tended to put their name on records years ago, or it could have been done at the pressing plant, similar to the "PORKEYS PRIME CUT" mark, or it could be only on 1st run DEMO 7 factory samples, Not having another to compare it with, can someone inform me if it on their EMI copy .CHEERS DAVE K this shows nothing?

HI ALL ...As you may no the Studio 1 COXONE Treasure Isle, Reid's an so on moved out of Kingston and re located in NEW YORK, on the move the took all the masters and studio tapes, just leaving all the stock vinyl back in JA, This is why I get a rye smile when I see a reissue sell for £1.50 & the 1st for £150 when they both come from the same stamper and more ironic is when the original has no label on. yes them rude boys no the gullible to Rass Sir D the Drug

Quality Control (Or Lack Of It)
Hi all....When it comes down to it in the music industry since time, the artist has been exploited by everyone else, in the 5ts & 6ts this was even more so, most people are aware that Berry Gordy Jr did not make records (well 1 by exploiting all those who called him Berry, allegedly) in the US & UK managers & producers were on the make/take along with RADIO STATIONS ONE STOPS & RECORD SHACKS, ..Read about PAY-OLA, ROCK & ROLL SWINDLE, or the Joe MEEK STORY, THE HISTORY OF TINPAN ALLY & ANY BOOK ON THE BEATLES/FAB4, how they made it to the top, Back in 1972 a record on the BT Puppy label US. by Melba Moore - "don't cry sing along with the music" was a popular tune played at the TORCH, from 73 onwards for many it was a forgotten oldie that you could find in a few record boxes at Wigan on the bootleg SOUL WAX label, their was 1 person for whatever reason had the chance to go to the states find the studio go through the tapes, remember her name,(this probably was first on the list once he found out where he was going-maybe) the chances of finding "the Magic Touch" needed just that, ADY & KENT records did one of the best promotions of all time with this gem, initial exclusive to DJ with making a demand for the record that did not exist, then giving it away free to the patrons who have supported the ideals of 6ts soul & 100 CLUB, Only to create demand for the record to get issued on HORACES. CLEVER MAN & I bet with that talent he would of made many a lost record a hit back in the 6ts, the reason being ADY listens to the artist, I think most people back in 72 who only got the bootleg must of wonder why it was the same on both sides (I think) so people like ADY would have remembered this fact when opportunity of looking through all tapes, as back in the day an artist worked in a studio all day and recorded what was told they should record, Not until 1963 the Beatles challenged this and took control of their own material by making sure they had the publishing & writers credits, this become the norm, and by the end of the 6ts you had LPs with 2 tracks on, which killed of the 45 until GLAM ROCK & PUNK come along Oh yes and the 30 odd reissue records PYE put out on DISCO DEMAND ROUTE & other similar labels (how pitiful) of curse the story is much more than I have written, but it is a start?! DAVE K
