HI ALL Regarding the above comments, I also do not collect TAMLA MOTWN or US MOTOWN however over the years I have about 500 UK MOTOWN & 150 US MOTOWN, I have about 150 DEMOS RED & WHITE, GREEN & WHITE & BLACK SILVER A's. Yet I still say I am not a collector, and see my UK Soul collection & my US Northern soul collection, with different eyes, not sure why this is so, as I do like MOTOWN, but never really been hooked on the must have aspect of collecting, they are all on a separate shelves away from my collection, strange fact, s there any like wise collectors out there that take my stance??, DAVE K
  2. HI ALL REPAIRING RECORDS IMPROVES RECORDS VALUE IF DONE PROPERLY?... It is my opinion that sometimes it is fine to attempt to improve a damaged record, for example many collectors would not devalue an LP, if a LP cover had work done to it, like repairing a rip or gluing the seem, or in the case of the BEATLES butcher cover, attempt to remove the pasted on front cover if done properly increases it's value. Many collectors have attempted to remove a warp sometimes successfully, a split record can be repaired, so can a centre that has been knocked out, however in some circles this repair is pointless, they feel it does not increase the value, and even a mint 45 with no centre will be worth only two thirds of the price of a complete 45, My view is this any repair that is done to improve the record by looks or by sound is ok, if done properly, the debate on putting a new centre in a record again if done with care will improve the look of the 45, however in some cases it is best to leave alone, if the record came from a radio station and the DJ dinked the record, it's a part of the records history, in some cases writing on the label will increase the value the hand written copies of soul city records by DAVE GODIN, In my collection I have put new labels on 4 records, these records were water damaged and the replaced labels have made a vast difference to the record, As a collector the improvements a new label does improve the record, the only concern for me is if someone uses a new label to change it from a issue to a demo and then sells it as such, this is a act of fraud, and as such be treated as a crime, not as a hard luck incident, any one who deliberately cons a collectore by holding back any info reguardng repairs should get exposed as undesirable on our scene, it is down to the buyer to take action on the matter. Hope this write up is some kind of statue quoe
  3. HI ALL to right it's complicated, as I was comparing your info against my Demo, as I said G means the very first pressing you will see it on all of the EMI Demos, as for GG I really am confused, it may be a export record, but the record did get released in Europe so any thing I say is just a guess on my part, the best I can do is ask the 3 Amigos of UK SOUL, Mick Pete & Roy if not John Manship may know, you can always send a scan to RECORD COLLECTOR magazine as they have many UK pop collectors who love this sort of stuff, they always get back to you, sometimes they print your letter, DAVE K
  4. HI ALL ..Smokey Robinson penned "what love bought together" was a in house favourite at HITVILE USA. It was record by many by many MOTOWN artists over a 7 year period. some of the recorded versions have never been released, those that did get released are on LPs or are B sides, the best version of the song was by the TEMPTATIONS 45 as the B side of "it's growing" (in my opinion) Mary Wells did a nice copy, However the very best version comes from JAMAICA on the Rupi Edwards SUCCESS LABEL by Dobby Dobbson who has a great voice, well suited for songs such as this, but his version is also the rarest of them all, and it is very elusive, I have 2 spare 12" copy's in the past I have sold it for £100, the 12" is a reissue released over 10 years after the 45 was released as a 7", the record was withdrawn very quickly hence it's rarity and high price if you see the 7" buy it, the 12" goes for £50 today if you want a copy from me, maybe I have under stated the value as I have seen and had more Glen Millers than copies of the Dobby Dobson DAVE K
  5. HI ALL....Like Pete I assumed you were talking about UK DEMOS, any UK item that is a stock copy with a sticker on saying FACTORY COOPY or SAMPLE COPY does not make it a DEMO nor does the RCA A sticker on GRAPEVINE Records, as they can be peeled from any other crap record and simply stuck on, it's a shame and I have seen many grapevine 45s sell for more just because they have the A sticker on them. As for US records RIC -TIC BLUE LABLE demos have promotion not for sale in small writing on what looks like a stock copy. :thumbsup:DAVE K
  6. HI ALL As Pete said 2nd or 3rd stands for the pressing runs for a record a reissue would be just that, Solomon King Columbia DB8676 has the matrix 7xca 32661-0 "say a prayer" & 7xca 32661-1 "this beautiful day" the matrix # is at 6o clock on EMI records, the KT is the tax code at 12 o clock, 7 at 3 o clock you have a letter that stands for the pressing run, 'G' is the very first run & you will find it on all DEMOS and blank test pressings, the next pressing run would have the letter 'R' these letters come from the word GRAMAPHONE & each new pressing run will have a new letter, so the third run would have the letter 'M' at the 3 o clock position. Your record will be a late run, so check the letter to confirm, as it has a miss title, it would seem it is a withdrawn record as I have never seen one, the record was deleted and re promoted under the name of Levi Jackson, as far as rarefy I have always believed the Solomon King DEMO & the Levi Jackson issue to be worth the most, your record with a misspelt title would not make it worth more money in my opinion & some collectors might think it is worth less DAVE
  7. HI ALL if true I am not surprised as we all know how paypal makes their money, many banks dislike their customers using paypal they would rather you be loyal and use them, they all missed the boat due to their own mess in 2007, also it bugs me when dealers expect their customers to pay a bill that they should pay, a dealers tax, it can work out expensive for buyers to, if you are legit then you can get tax relief, as some adverts even on this site are raking it in, then making out it's a hobby, and asking the buyer be my mate and pay my tax on your perches, I say do behave mush DAVE

HI As I have been in your situation, selling up is very hard, selling 45s 1 by 1 and getting a good price takes a long time, and as your list shows you can leave out the info buyers need, such as UK or US label Original or re-press condition, it maybe easier if you get 3 valuations done on what you got then you can decide the best way to proceed, the other thing is people will always cherry pick you collection for the rarer items, leaving you with a lot of records that you may find hard to sell, again this is why selling the lot to dealer may be the best option for you, in the end I kept my it's a tough call, don't mug yourself DAVE K & GOOD LUCK
  9. HI ALL Some record dealers have already had a go at this, it's a bit late for me to use the scanner, but I have seen many records advertised in the TOP POPS sleeve that EMI sent out as RUSH RELEASE 45s, and records in company sleeves like KING & BLUEBEAT that were not used on any rare soul records in the case of KING, but they do look good in, & a original BLUEBEAT sleeve is very rare in the original wavy top thin paper style, the TROJAN records have a good sleeve design that they used since the millennium . I have an early ISLAND sleeve that is rare, but it would be nice to have a ISLAND sleeve that copied the SUE label, other rare sleeves I have are from PAMA a PAMS GAS, & NU BEAT sleeves are very rare, so the idea is great as the chances of finding such rare sleeves today are zilch DAVE K
  10. :hatsoff2:Hi All I have noticed that the music section on eBay is full of novelty gold disc's, also many label scans of rare UK records, as a long time record collector, I'm in two minds about these items, at first I accepted them for what they were, novelty reproes of demo discs such as one of the BEATLES #1s for example, as know one would feel coned if they were given such a disc as a present, more likely to think they are tacky but could be put on a wall as a joke, however the people behind there manufacture have gone from a few titles to now producing all sorts of labels from $TATESIDE TAML MOTOWN well most of the EMI labels that issued psyche rare soul northern soul progressive rock and more... As I said I'm a collector and used to handling UK records, but it was not long ago when scanners were being made for home use, the same concept was used to fake a issued disk into a rare demo, and passed of as original catching many people out who thought they had got the real thing cheap, I'm sure that there are still many people about who have what they think is a rare record at home as a investment for the future, and one day be devastated when they try to sell it, this situation arose in the early 8ts when some people who had small northern soul collections went to cash them in, only to give the dealer who was looking at them a ear bashing, thinking that the dealer was trying to con them, In recent times the market for rare MOD/PSYCHE records has had over 100 top rare records pressed up with fake UK labels, Bringing this topic up has nothing to do with the company that sells on eBay the Novelty Gold discs, as I have tested them out if they were dodgy, however that's not to say someone could not porches a label and paste it on a disc and sell it as an original, The best tip I can give is that no UK record that is of interest of the rare soul scene, has sold enough records to make a gold silver or any other kind of metal, they only sold a few plastic ones, and beware if you are offerd a Darrel Banks "open the door to your heart" LONDON ISSUE, or the FIRST CHOICE "this is the house" PYE ISSUE or DEMO, What do you think? DAVE K PS do you want a copy of the VOLUMES on PAMA for £150
  11. HI ALL About CONTEMPOS demise & going under, I was told that the receiver would have taken the stock and it was sold at auction? that's sounds plausible, however surely someone on the soul scene would know the full story, I have yet to read anything about the end of the company, a mystery for sure. About those Motown LPs the Isley Brothers track was a reel discovery for many, back in 72 the R Dean Taylor LP was every bodies find with "there's a ghost in my house" the LP has an extra verse than the TAML MOTOWN 45, also the Steve Wonder LP had his version of "Angel Baby" not the best version, Darrell Banks was the one to get until Mick Smith found the classic by George Carrow, I'm sure you would all agree? great days when you could go hunting for dusty's buying on line is very boring in comparison. DAVE K
  12. Hi All Paul although I was an avid reader of BLUES & SOUL from 1970 onwards, & a regular visitor to CONTEMPOS in Hannaway Street London, and know most aspects about John Abbeys involvement in labels like SUE ACTION MOJO & CONTEMPOS, I know very little about the demise of the label and the closure of the shop, like who had all the shops stock, someone got lucky, it just vanished or it's in a lock up somewhere? DAVE K
  13. HI ALL...This 45 may seem odd at first glance, however it is one of those records that I love to have in my rare soul collection, I remember Mick S playing me this many years ago, it is from 1965, and has the SUPREEMS singing "things go better with COKE" when I was looking on you tube for a sound file, I was amazed on how many people recorded Coca Cola Adverts, rather me putting a sound file on Soul Source why not go to you tube and see for your self, I found it enjoyable way to pass an hour DAVE K
  14. HI ALL This VA LP has been in mmy collection for many years, every track is good and inkeeping with the title, CONTEMPO LPs and 12" SINGLES are getting to be very hard to find, and I would sujest that even if you don't like a certain disc, you should still buy it as a future investment, trust me on this. the LP SOUL DEEP CONTEMPO VA. DAVE K
  15. HI AL I may off mentioned this fact before, In the 7ts Solomon King did an appearance at a Gospel church in Little Brickiln Street, Wolverhampton, a load of Catacomb's regulars turned up demanding he sang Beautiful Day, not sure he did, or if the West Indian church goers were amused at the time, however this is a true story, from Paddy & Aggy DAVE K
  16. HI ALL I am looking for any old Bush Discasette Discatrron spare parts also any working Discasette condition does not matter, if any body has a wiring document on the Discatrron a copy will do, finally any on line sites as I cant find any on repairs, MANY THANKS DAVE
  17. HI ALL ,YOUR A ONE ADY, I DO RAMBLE ON, THE ANSWER IS I JUST KNOW DAVE K PS SHOULD I DELETE THE ABOVE OR LEAVE IT AS A PUBLIC MESSAGE? I COULD DO A POLL,
  18. Hi All. ADY is right to ask the question "how do I know" well although the gist is very true, there has been times of abstinence, like when I dropped of the scene in 78 to get my act together, recovery for myself meant I had to deprive all the triggers that set me off to use, the hardest part has been to limit my consumption, especially how I used to use speed that was by iv, The 7ts soul scene was very quadraphonic for me despite getting HEP non A non B (HEP C) 3 drug busts, record box stolen while having a fix, by my mate (Chris G) ending in 79 with a prison sentence for an affray, As soon as I returned to the scene the drug use returned, over the years when I get myself into situation out of my control, I tend to internalise the issues and self medicate, however I always get myself into treatment, by being on a script, has taken away the IV use, by doing so, and by being open & transparent, I have receive a script DEXAMFETAMINE SULPHATE 10X5mg daily, there are quite a few people that we all know would benefit from being on a script, the reason why they are not is twofold a) where you live the NHS is regional and drug treatment is not high on the list when they look at their budget, the true facts it cost the NHS £1.70 per week for my tablets, so when it comes down to the facts of scripting long term users the impact on the budget is nothing compared with the treatment for alcoholism, b)the last in depth survey by the dept of health into amphetamine use was over 10 years ago, when the recommendations were to encourage speed users back into treatment, yet it is the opposite of this that is the norm in most of the country, Manchester & Liverpool health are the exceptions and treat many long term users. The fact that most health regions don't prescribe is a) they see the situation as giving like for like, & of little benefit, b) they see the use of speed as non addictive, recreational drug use with heavy use lasting for about 2 . , & users in the main using with others in small groups, mainly younger people, This approach is a load of bollocks and does not promote harm reduction, over the years I have lost many good friends because the only options open to them was the street drug scene which is available 24/7 were as treatment is limited to selective opening hours, staffed by RMN NURSES WHO ARE NOT TRAINED IN ADDICTION AND TREAT EVERYBODY AS IF THERE PROBLEM WAS OPIATE, They can't think out of the box, it is also a fact that many staff use drugs & alcohol in their private lives, you would be surprised at the number of staff that have themselves got busted for dealing to their client's, to conclude for many people the scene has always triggered of the use of speed, however there is a small number like myself, I am lucky that I get support, and it is the duty of all members of our scene to take an adult approach to the many users, as it does not take much to start using again. If you know anyone with a drug problem or you have a problem as a user or as a parent of drug using kids & need advice but don't no who to ask just PM myself I will give you proper advise and a confidential safe way, I am a qualified counsellor in addiction working for the NHS & VOLUNTRY SECTORS, with 20 years of practice, DAVE (DtheDRUG) K
  19. Hi All Nice one Pete as I am old school, All- Nighters only exist so people could get high, a fact that the SOHO late night cafes & juke box clubs started just to cater for the BENZODRINE & CHINESE H users, all music scenes that play American influenced music, I have never been straight at a soul event, as it complements the music (it fits like a glove) and it is much safer than Alcohol a drug that wrecks lives daily and is a killer, the vast majority of users of speed are recreational users for the reason given, there are very few people who use speed daily like myself, these people are addicted to the drug however this is rare in 2013 I am unaware of anybody on a dexamfetimine script, again I would rather see the few heavy users on a script than using chemicals that are used to clean drains and make batteries I use because I am old school hard core that don't give a monkeys, I have done my bit, for society, however I was better of robbing chemist shops hope I die before I get old DAVE K

HI ALL PALOMAR is part of the PARROT HI LONDON GROUP OF COMPANIES Dist in MEXICO, I THINK DAVE K
  21. HI ALL As a collector as I am, I don't think it comes as a surprise that many DJ's today have not really discovered any new sounds in-fact if at all.(I base this fact on the very few unknown records I have found in 45 years), So most of todays DJ's rediscover old tunes, or chase after the latest finds of the likes of BUTCH and that's an expensive way to DJ, And again it is no surprise that many DJ's with decent record boxes have piss poor record collections, as they had to sell them to keep up as a DJ. another FACT this, most decent collections contain many records that are familiar to another collector, but are unknown to many of to-days run of the mill DJ's this is noticeable to me, when I play DJ's records I have, I could do that all night long and have done, yet most collectors never get asked to DJ any more, well I don't. DAVE K
  22. HI ALL ....I REMEMBER JOE & LEGS,FROM THE FEW TIMES I WENT TO THE DOT, & IN THE STUDENT PRINCE IN 69. THATS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS THREAD, SO BACK ON TRACK, SKINHEAD GIRL, First I made a big mistake about having it on a blank, it never come out that way, I was thinking of the 8ts blank of SKINHEAD TRAIN C/W SKINHEAD A BASH EM CLAUDETTE, THIS BLANK WAS REDONE ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO, and it caught a few people out I saw 1 copy sell for £85 and many over £40 it's real value is £1. SKINHEAD GIRL by SYMARIP was on their SKINHEAD MOONSTOMP LP, however it did come out on a 45 7" as it was on a TROJAN EP, SKINHEAD MOONSTOMP 3rd release has that awful pic cover of boots walking on the moon, that alone makes me vomit, no Skinhead had their LEVIS rolled up, dress up like that if you are a racist or gay but please don't think it's in the spirit of 69, the EP is not to be confused with TRO 9062 which has SKINHEAD JAMBOREE as the B side, it's the 3rd reissue that has the boot sleeve in green not the blue that is common, I will give more info on this when I can state it as a fact, even though I am not wrong, it's is also on a 12" TROJAN LABEL early 8ts. clear as mud I can't find my Trojan listings book, it also may be in the YOUNG GIFTED & BLACK book that's worth a nose DAVE K
  23. Hi All ..Can I thank EPIC. for that thread, as it has led me to talk to old friends who I have not seen for 38 years, in particular to Judith Wilkinson who was Tony's wife, so I owe you one DAVE K
  24. HI ALL I must agree with the above TONY JEBB was & the best, however integral for a MECCA revival, where will you get people to give the authentic atmosphere that the Highland had, it's also having a Keele all-nighter without me selling records and Mick Smith not doing his set, I would guess it would be dull & dim &. the dance floor covered in Vim DAVE K PS:- YES YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT TONY, VERY SAD, THERE WAS TALK LAST YEAR OF A SPECIAL EVENT FOR HIM IN BLACKPOOL?
