Bootleg Rarer Then The Original ?
HI ALL,, To be honest with you, the full story of the record is speculative, apart from the fact that it did exist as a UK pressed 45, I really have no reason to doubt the words of ADY, have you? not sure if the SOUL CITY connection come from ADY or DAVE, If Ady is about he may help you with the answer, however CHRIS JACKSONS SOULCITY120 was advertised in BLUES & SOUL I will have to dig out the copy of B&S to show the advert, however it was to be pressed by CBS, a move away from PHILLIPS FONTANA ISLAND RECORDS, That as I wrote in the SOUL CITY THREAD, Put the nail in the coffin of SOUL CITY, As we no that the CHRISS JACKSON SC120 only exists on a 444 acetate & I have owned a further CHRIS JACKSON ACCITATE, Until the SAM NESBITT 45, turns up, and we can determine the pressing plant as either FONTANA or CBS, which I doubt, we can't state that it is a SOUL CITY intended release or another rare BOOTLEG,, As I stated if only we could find the record, we will no for certain, until then it's goes down as a romantic story, but the evidence states that it is not a 444 release, or does it?

Bootleg Rarer Then The Original ?
HI ALL....The subject of BOOTLEGS on the RARE SOUL SCENE is a passion of mine, As the subject matter goes hand in hand with the history of the RARE SOUL & NORTHERN SOUL SCENE in GREAT BRITAIN, Can I strongly recommend MANSHIPS GUIDE ON BOOTLEGS as a must have aid if you are getting serious about collecting, or you have the chance of buying a collection, Over the many years that I have been on the scene, I have yet to meet anyone who has not bought a BOOTLEG at some time, and it must not be forgotten, the BOOTLEGS that were issued in the mid 7t's satisfied the vast number of regulars who attended All-nighters just to have a great night dancing the night away, with the right people, SOUL PEOPLE, BOOTLEGS for most of us were the only realistic way to own certain records, one good example is the great dancer that SAM WARD gave us with his "SISTER LEE" GROOVE CITY RECORDS, a rare record back then and still in 2013 just if not rarer, have you got a original copy? it seems even top collector NEIL RUSHTON had the copy write to issue it, but lacked a scan of the original for the cover of a great LP. This maybe the reason that the record does not get many plays today, DJ spinning a BOOTLEG? Out of the many hundreds of BOOTLEGS knocking about, the ORIGANAL copy is still the copy to own, and only a handful of these are collectable to-day, these are the ones that come out from 67 to 73, As mentioned we have all had a few boot's in our collection, the odd "OUT OF THE PAST/OOTP" 45 & a "SOUL SOUNDS" 45, However how many of you have the complete run of the 45's DOBIE GRAY OUT ON THE FLOOR & CHUBBY CHECKERS DISCOTEQUE are much rarer than the US copies, and the white label copies of the SOUL SOUNDS LABEL are in my opinion the rarest of all BOOTLEGS, However I have what I believe to be the rarest BOOTLEG of importance to the scenes history, but I have also always considered that ADY CROSDALE had a real rare item with his white label copy of SAM NESBITTS "BLACK MOTHER GOOSE" the record was meant to have been a future SOUL CITY release for DAVE GODIN, however as much as DAVE loved the record, my logic states that a copy of CHRIS JACKSON SOUL CITY120 must also exist, the mystery over the record will continue for as long as the scene or until a copy turns up, so if it is a BOOTLEG it must be the rarest of them all, and equal to the rare US copy Only a month ago I wrote to JOHN MANSHIP about the early BOOTLEGS that are on UK pressed vinyl and how they should be included in the COLLECTORS GUIDE TO UK SOUL vol2, which is long overdue, and I mentioned my copy of the TAMS "HEY GIRL DON'T BOTHE ME" B/W CHUBBY CHECKERS "DISCOTEQUE" 45, Pressed with a reversed label showing MANCHEST UNITED 45, Now compared with the top original US released soul, my 45 means little, but as a part of the scenes evolution it's priceless DAVE K

Soul City White Demo's (Handwritten By Dave Godin)
HI ALL Here we go again, the SC110 come from a NORTH LONDON HOSPITAL, NORTH WING HOSPITAL RADIO? On that subject, many rare records, were discovered back in the 7t's in hospitals tucked away in store rooms, my close friend found 5000 PAMA 45s in the same place as the SC110 DAVE K NICE

Soul City White Demo's (Handwritten By Dave Godin)
HI ALL Yes indeed these are some really rare items, issued on the ORIGANAL SOUL CITY LABEL, never to be confused with the reissue label, The most valuable white label, is 113 & 114. then 108, the 112 is also very elusive, 111is hard, and 110 is the most common of the white labels, other demos are the black & white SOUL CITY LABEL, It was the intention of DAVE to carry on with the BLACK & WHITE DEMO LABEL on all releases, but after his massive disappointment that made him a scape goat, for all the illicit dealings that were common & almost routine for GUY STEVENS & CHRIS BLACKWELL in the running of SUE&ISLAND RECORDS that come to an abrupt finish in 67, hence the new direction of ISLAND with it's new PINK LABEL, the ending of SUE, & John Abbey taking on the new ACTION LABEL following on from his work with SUE, & the JAMAICAN releases under the offshoot B&C with TROJAN, SOUL CITY & DAVE nearly went bust with the release of 108, the track only had been leased for album release. To make the point the parent company PHILLIPS/FONTANA were on DAVES case by withdrawing the 108 release after 1 week, (it seems quite clear that DAVE did not send back all his copies, but it still makes the "STAR/ONE MORE CHANCE" the most desirable of all of SOUL CITY stock copies, As for the blanks they are only a handful of them given out by DAVE, I HAVE ONLY 2 WHITE LABELS, ROY GELDER has them all except 1, & MICK SMITH had all the known DEMOS BLACK & WHITE & WHITE LABELS, It may be the case that there are more white labels out there? more important are there more BLACK & WHITE SOUL CITY LABEL DEMOS? With only 19 issues and SOUL CITY 444 ACITATE CHRIS JACSON + 2 444 UNFINSHED CHRIS JACKSON Recordings, anything related to DEEP SOUL & SOUL CITIY labels that is unknown is very collectable, As for value of white labels, I have just put them in the order of rarity, as I'm aware that some collectors do not put a high price on them, As Pete Smith say's it's not hard to make white labels & he is right, however I would love to own more HOPE THIS HELPS DAVE K

Price Please
HI ....Sometimes putting a price on UK records such as your DEMO comes as a bit of disappointment, as unless the record is in demand or wanted the price is quite cheap, the other thing to consider is that there are 2 divisions of pricing between UK & US soul. Your record in mint is worth about £30, weather you can sell it for that is down to who you aiming it at, It's a very good record and I'm sure Pete Smith may quote a higher or lower price? let's see. DAVE K

Earl Grant-Hide Nor Hair
HI All Way back when GOD's dog was a puppy, This was a huge record on the scene, similar to the "SNAKE" which by all accounts is a top Northern Soul record, "HIDE NOR HAIR" is far superior in my opinion, and I can't imagine not having a copy, in the early days of Wigan the DECCA PINK DEMOS were the only was to have it along with the other PINK DEMOS of that time, the Issue I first had was from Mick Smith it had the large print on it I still own a large Print copy, I did not see a small print copy until 75 and then a MCA reissue, the small print I think is a reissue for the UK market like the Danny White, I can't say for certain but the large print on most US 45's indicates the original rather than a EAST or WEST COAST pressing, it is the same thing as the COASTERS "Crazy Baby" which I also got from Mick had large print, I have also considered to be the first copy, hence it's rarity today, DAVE K

Bedford Soul Town
HI ALL BEDFORRD was a hub for many people from 69 onwards, it was also a strange in the fact it was isolated from what was going on in Hertfordshire, For example, I can't recall any type of SKINHEAD GANG from BEDFORD, yet the style & fashion was very much the dress code, also back in 69 people from all over HERTFORDSHIRE, went to the 2 top dance halls the CALI in Dunstable, the MECCA/LOCANO STEVENAGE, again many LUTON went there, can't recall BEDFORD being there? On the rare times I went to BEDFORD it always landed up in a bundle with locals, in 71, we went into CAESERS and as usual a bundle started with the security staff, as we left a Baldock bloke got a really bad kick in by 3 Bouncers we had to et him out of the place, I can't give names, but most of the people I was with were 2to3 years older than me, all were 6t's MODS, compared to SKINHEAD fights, these blokes did not F**K about shotguns were used and hammers, I saw a bouncer get his jaw hit so hard the hammer head broke off, The next time I went to Bedford was with an old mate who as a SKINHEAD never bottled out, very reliable & very unpredictable as he often could lose it, this was my introduction to the rare soul scene, his name was Chris Galard, he lived in Bushmead Avenue, he took me to many places and I met some great people, John & Caroline, Tony Warot John Taperdon, Tilly, & so on the PILGRIMS was a In-crowd PUB, it even had a few rare soul sounds on the Juke Box Eddie Parker comes to mind, also the local record shop Carlow's had quite a few RARE SOUL records (Selecta Bootlegs) I remember buying all the Okeh records with the small 45. From then on BEDFORD was the place to go, Chris took e to the TORCH JUNCTION BLETSO and places in the north of the county that had All-Nighters Earls Barton was a good one, Smelly George sadly drown in the river a strange atmosphere after that night, A few years on I joined the EAGLES SOUL CLUB and went to all the Thursday Night events with Mick Smith, I could write much more about the people who I often think about Brillo Franco Hammy all keen collectors of Rare Soul DAVE K

Surely A Boot
HI ALL I have always wonderd why these to records are classed as Bootlegs, as they both are ATLANTIC RECORDINGS, why are they the only BOOTS from such a vast number of recordings on catalogue? surely they are later limited repressed records, however one the Coasters is snide, DAVE K
