Blues & Soul Mags
HI ALL I wonder how many copies of BLUES & SOUL are in the lofts of 7t's SOULSTERS, over the past 18 months I have seen dozens of B&S for sale on eBay, most are priced as individual items? I have all the B&S numbers through the 1970s and can honestly say, as much as I enjoyed reading them (still do) at the price wanted for each copy, would not be worth it if I wanted to replace all my copies, However the most collectable copies are #1 to #23 #24 to #35, & #50 being the best copy (in my opinion) Earl Van Dyke Cover, but it's the first series #1 - #23 that fetch the most, and each year that goes by they will cost more, later copies of B&S are not worth more than 25p a copy DAVE K

HI Malc the Talc!....I remember my Brother going to the Night Owl a few times, I think he had his 1st Joint in the place, He told me it was good when he saw Ben E King, I no that he used to go with a few mods from North Hearts, and like me they went to all the SOHO clubs, A few went to the SCENE, which by what I have been told was THE in place of all the clubs, I see you went to BLETSOE so you may well know me? Name Your Top Ten Ska And Reggae
HI ALL HERES THE FIRST 2 FROM THE 10, SCANS ONLY (SHAME) I WILL HAVE TO THINK HARD AFTER THIS, I HAVE GOT MY 123 ALREADY, SO WHAT 5 DO I PICK????? 1st up this is one you should all have, based on the 67 COXONE sound of Jackie Mitto's "whiter shade of " We have the SOUNDS UNLIMITED, fantastic deep mover with a haunting rhythm that is so effective, paving the way for great music to come, this is a reggae instrumental of class, it's not a pop-a pop-a come blow my horn stuff of the era (not a skinhead tune) this is one to skin up to SCEAN value £80+. 2nd up we have from the UK DOCTOR BIRD Label, Sir Lord Comic - "SKA-ing West" BIG SOUND in 67 especially at BOWES-LYON Stevenage New Town, this was the first place I become aware of Jamaican music & dancing, live bands like the KINKS SMALL FACES GENO WASHINGTON & the RAM JAM BAND and the WHO all played at BOWES, it was MOD WORLD inside, the WHIP also on DOCTOR BIRD comes to mind but does not make my top 10 as they have 1 in my top 3 of the 10, it's a start 5 to go + my top 3. Item Not As Described - Return Or Get A Price Reduction ?
HI ALL ...The record in photo described as mint, has a dish warp, this can happen to 1 in 20 records from the states & the same for hair line cracks, (many people probably don't no some of their collection has some kind of damage, if your purchases was a bargain, I would say KEEP them, as the Dish warp can be reversed as there has been no stretching or shrinking problems that you get with a ripple warp, cracked records are common, I have many, returns can be expensive and non profitable for both the buyer or seller, even if the seller has a returns policy if it does not cover postage costs, if you paid by credit card you will have cost covered, Pay-Pal do not cover you,!? Contact the seller and explained the problem and go for a compensation deal, pick something from his list and you pay the postage, If you don't want to do that or you have overpaid the going price and you want a refund if it has gone past the 14 days since the arrived, you may have more problems, as it is very hard to prove the seller was aware of the issue, and you could easy have dropped the 45 causing the crack, Best bet is you decide what to do, DAVE K

Ritz All-Dayer Patches
Hi All .. I remember buying this one in October 76, if you are selling them I will take 1 from you, PM me, However I will offer you sensible price? Ebay Auction you may get more than my offer, What I am after is the original VAVA badge, as mine faded so much in the wash it turned into just a round shape on the BAGS? never see it for sale so I assume it's in the top end of the badge market DAVE K

TA #0007 - 213-466-1281 : Sam And The Soul Walkers TA #0008 - 213-750-4966 : Village Crusaders TA #0009 - 213-384-9334 : Aki Aleong (reissue of VEE JAY #527) TA #0010 - 213-384-9334 : Bob Relf (YELLOW) TA #0010 - 213-389-9938 : Bob Relf (ORANGE) TRANS #0010 - 213-384-9334 : Bob Relf HI ALL.. This is a mystery that could be solved by John providing a good scan & giving his opinion, to fit in with this thread, as I find it difficult after all these years to except my copy is not a 1st issue, based on the fact that the telephone numbers differ? Having not seen TA #007,-008, 009, 45's, is it not more likely that the company used the earlier label at the same time as the updated label, they would not be the 1st record company to use different labels on the initial run,? Also why am I sure there is a white demo? if there is, it will have the info of the record up for auction, it should? but if it exists, the info will be the same as my release, this is speculation on my part, but needs to be sorted DAVE K

Bob Relf
HI ALL THERE IS CONFUSION ON THIS RECORD, as I said it's taken 40 years to sort it all out, the order is correct, and normally most collectors of rare soul would go for the 1st release, in this case the ORANGE issue, However the 1st issues also had a YELLOW label, and the YELLOW label was used on the reissue, We or I assumed that all YELLOW label copies were reissues, this has proved not to be the case, In the batch of 1st issues 45's with the ORANGE label are more common that the 1st issue YELLOWS, all bootlegs are yellow copies using the TRANS label, intern this has devalued the legit TRANS reissue, Hope that this is ok, or I have got wrong also DAVE K

It Ain't Necessarily Soul - Please Help. Ray Barretto
HI ALL ...A excellent 2 sider that has risen n price over the last 10 years, must say that if you like the ACID A side then you have to get the LP ACID, the B side has had potential to go big (I can't believe that it has not been played?) a great buy, £50 for the DEMO is about right, however if it took off, so would the price as I was a poor seller on release, DAVE K

Bob Relf
HI ALL Over the years I have had all variations of this superb 2 sider, B side was a Safford play. the yellow has proved to be the rare one to have, however the orange copy held that mantle for many years, the yellow 1st reissue on Trans for some reason does not fetch any more than the counterfeit record hat has poor sound, why this is has always baffled me, and established dealers for some reason don't give any credence to it either DAVE K

Most Bizarre Auction Bid I've Ever Seen (I Think)
Hi All Don't Worry Pete, there is another planet around here somewhere that I have yet to visit? this place makes no scence of Logic and no concept of MONEY, £150, madness, makes my Valuation of Glenn Miller Normal, My time as a drinker of beer, could have cost me, as quite often I would for example on EBay Put £170 on a £20 record, thinking I had put £17.50 DAVE K

Major Lance - Live At The Torch - Orig'?
HI ALL This LP in truth is not that great, production wise, also back in the day digital mixing was not known? both LP's have no difference in quality, and at best they are not considered rare or in demand, you can smoke a joint and stand the reissue LP up and pretend that you are their, for best effect put an old pair of SKINNERS ON? don't put white one's on thou as you will turn into a BAY CITY ROLLER. The reissue is cheaper so buy it, there is no point in wasting good money I these hard times....DAVE K

Are Your Trophy Records Up On The Wall?
Hi All Your story is very typical of people whose work or hobby, brings them into close working relationship within the entertainment industries, for some daft reason I thought drum sticks would be cool to collect? instead of a autograph & photo, I have a tambourine that Marvin Gaye used in 76, but in truth drumsticks tambourines and all memorabilia is not worth a dollar if you can't prove it is genuine, so next time you hear Marvin sing I heard it through the grapevine, remember me as that chink chink tambourine that Dave's got is worthless as he can't prove it, it is a lesson to learn, as I could of got some excellent stuff with the autograph evidence

The "punter" & Dj Balance
HI All yes I will post what I played, however there are many points of this great story or history (if you believe history is based on a small minority account) the account being discussed has been very small if I except that the bulk of people who attended Wigan Casino for example, only 2% made up the number of soulsters on todays scene, and I do, in the same way the Wheelites & the Torch brothers & sisters were in the minority in the first 18 months of the All-Nighter opening, which is when I truly fell in love with the place, before that I was a punter lacking in knowledge about rare soul and the scenes underground ethos, masonic is more apt, just because I went through the doors of the Wheel it was for one thing only to get rid of a few dubes at grossly inflated prices, On the subject of the internet & EBay I see positives & negatives, yes there is some great info to be researched and open your eyes and top rarities' that I had never seen in my life, in the early days some collectors really had it of big time, however the availability comes at a price the net is a 2 dimension experience like reading Mayfair is 2 diamensual sex, as a lecturer I can state as fact only 10% of your knowledge in life is gained from the blackboard? education is gained through play, when you can be free to use your grey matter and not receive any critics in fact your ego states are very much in the Adult Child ego states the parental ego that consists of Nurturing / Critical ego states has not been formed, life rotates on the #7 so by the time you have reached the age of 7 you have gone through the stages of development to get through life on your own through the use of play, at the age of 8 yes you become a baby again and each year you will go through exactly the same stages so 8 yrs. olds are needy and demand food, by the time you reach 14 yrs. you are fully developed plus you have matured through the puberty adolescence stages, but the full maturity and sexual pleasures are not fully reached till 21 (we all no people who had sex at a young age but that is not my point, the fact we become independent through play and gain knowledge through play. After my psychology class I believe that today you can buy your way onto certain levels of the scene with the help of the worlds biggest car boot sale and not leave you armchair, we all do it nowadays. But for me getting of my ass going to every second hand shop junk shop jumble sale, and by attending soul events to meet and discuss soul, looking through the essential record box that we all carried glued to our hand, was the best way to educate yourself, so you in turn used this info to preach to punter, and then there were your mentors, not the DJ but those people who unlike me had the records before the DJ, I think that my main mentor gets a mention from myself in most of my write up's but I would not have had any knowledge so to speak if I had not met him (Mick Smith) you could not want a better mentor, my ego was masaed big time when I was at Wigan casino selling records and all-nighter food, in the company of Pete Wid ADY C & Mick, I could have had the pick of the best in their boxes, HAPPY DAYS, However not everyone is my age, many of todays Brothers & Sister did not go to the Casino and spend 4 days a week stoned week in week out younger people a such have progressed in their knowledge without having to listen to 100 mph under the influence of stimulants, the bad side of this is a sort of denial of Northern Soul (not stuck in a time warp) which I prefer over second ate album tracks from the 7t's still who am I to preach? Oh yes I am a original rare soul brother and that's what we do as I feel 100% me when I am with like minded addicts a play list will be put up soon as I have a cuppa cha Right on to Dave Godin who was a mentor to most Northern Soul people RIP DAVE K

The "punter" & Dj Balance
HI ALL This is a topic that I fully endorse as there have been so many changes in style sound and venues over the 45 years I have listen to, collected and on occasion DJ ED, As a punter (am I a punter? punters pay to get into gigs, something I try to avoid on the principle that is the gig keeping to the old school principles of obscure original and must have, if not let me DJ?) When I am attending a venue, the things that make me want to return are as follows:- using the old school ethics on what makes a good night is important, I enjoy being in the company of soul brothers & sisters, not in the company of locals who don't no the meaning of hello! In my youth typical DISCOS PUBS & CLUBS in LONDON & the HOME COUNTIES, were full of wanna be Dick Heads, who were there to get pissed up & fight, "who you screwing" was a common shout, "screwing meant eyeballing someone, a big no no, a even bigger no no, was to stair at someone sort (girl) if you bumped into someone you had to ask for forgiveness & if you spilt their drink you were expected to buy them another, this attitude leads to 2 outcomes fight or flight, back then you had to fight, when you got a bit older and gained a reputation, you then applied this nonsense towards others (unwritten rule is don't drink in strange Public Bars if you want to avoid a kickin from the locals) The solution to that scene was discovering the Northern Soul Scene (rare soul scene as it was called then) When attending the SOUL Clubs non of the above crap applied and this was not because they were not capable far from it, it was because they had SOUL, a spirit of awareness of what is important and acting like 2 year olds was not the BAG. The SOUL SCENE PEOPLE were very much into the music policy, and always showed you respect especially when they found out you had driven 150 miles to hear the music, you were always greeted with a hand shake (in the South if you did that, you would be asking for it, as you must be a POOF?) The TOP DJs played records that you would die for much has been written about them over the years but trust me the likes of Alan Day & Tony Jebb have never lost the crowns they wore and other contenders like Keith Minshull & PEP just the same unchallengeable no one could compare o the skill of these people who could keep you dancing for 8 so full soulful hours, On today's eclectic mixture of DJs you do get very good ones at LONDONS 100 CLUB (Is this because ADY has vetted them for soulfulness before they et a spot?) in the MIDLANDS we are lucky as we have 2 of the country's TOP DJs Ted Massey and BUTCH both are unique in their play lists, and both take time out to welcome you, I have great respect for both off them, I could name a few more people but I have made a point, The issue is more about the records played and the venue they are played in, Local events don't need the #1 DJs this comes from the need of the club, if the club gets established, my best examples are 2 soul clubs that become so big you would think they were All-Nighter's, my bench mark is BLACKPOOLS MECCA, #1 SOUL CLUB, Wolverhampton clubs the VIC & the BLACK HORSE, both venues were 10 out of 10, in every thing that this thread is about, I'm sure many people could add to the list, Last Saturday I did my 1st DJ spot in YONK'S'', (thanks to SWOZ who has encouraged me back due to my SOULFUL ILLNESS) The 45's I played (All on UK labels) went down well, but more than that at least half were fresh to those who attended making the experience very enjoyable, so much so I intend to do a few more over the summer, Well that's my intro I hope it brings out some good comments on he subject of this thread, this is a personal view of the scene, AS ALWAYS DAVE K

Levi 501 Adverts
HI ALL REMEMBER BACK TO THE START OF THE 1980's? You could not get hold of a new pair of SRINK TO FIT LEVI 501 JEANS, for your life, until DAVID BOWIE used LEVIS to sponsor his latest tour, As the market for jeans had dropped of since it's heyday of 1971, when every thing was DENIM, LEVIS RELAUNCHED 501 JEANS, With the iconic launderette scene, and then kept the theme going until... Well i'm not sure when, also not sure of how many records were used on 501 adverts, In no particular order these are the ones I own, :- MUDDY WATERS - MANNISH BOY - MUD1 EDDIE COCHRAN - C'MON EVERYBODY - LIBERTY 501 B.B.KING - AIN'T NOBODY HOME - MCA 1354. BAD COMPANY - CAN'T GET ENOUGH - ATLANTIC-7954. PERCY SLEDGE - WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN - ATLANTIC YZ96. SAM COOKE - WONDERFUL WORLD - RCA PB49871. BEN E KING - STAND BY ME - ATLANTIC 9361. MARVIN GAYE - I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE - MOTOWN ZB4071. OK I am aware these records don' have value above 99p, but in there own way make collecting fun & cheap. Any info on this subject or indeed advertising associated with this product, I would be interested in, AS AWAYS DAVE K https://youtu.be/wT4DR_ae_4o

Never Seen One Of These Before
HI PETE NEVER SEEN THIS ONE, HOWEVER MOST 5T'S & 6T'S 3&4 TRACK TAPE M/C HAVE THE DISK CUTTER INPUT ON THEM, THE CUTTER CAN BE ADDAPTED FROM A DECENT NON BELT DRIVE TURNTABLE, AND IF YOU TAKE THIS BLOKES INFO A CONVERSION IS QUITE SIMPLE WITH JUST BASIC KNOWLAGE, THE PRINCIPLE IS THE SAME AS IF YOU CONNECTED A VU GAGE TO THE DECK, OR THE SAME AS A SOUND LIGHT DISCO SET UP WORKS, A DISK CUTTER WORKS LIKE A LATHE, HENCE THIS MODEL FROM THE 5T'S WILL RECORD ABOUT A 3 MINUTE TRACK, HENCE THE LINNIER TRACKING OF THE ARM, AND THAT IN THE 5T'S MOST RECORDINGS WERE 2.5 MINUTES, BELOW ARE 2 DISCS THAT WERE USED IN THE 5T'S TO RECORD ON SIMULAR MACHINES, IN THIS CASE I THINK THEY ARE FROM A FAIR GROUND MACHINE? BUT YOU GET THE GIST OF THE TECHNOLAGY, PUTING IT SIMPLY, GET 2 TIN CANS A ND STRING PULL IT TIGHT AND YOU HAVE A TELEPHONE, A MICROPHON & A SPEAKER ARE THE SAME, WITH iron FILEINGS ON PAPER YOU CAN SEE THE PATTERN THAT IT MAKES, CHECK OUT HOW TO MAKE A RECORD, CHEERS FOR SHARING THIS AS I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS MODEL AT ALL, AND I WANT ONE? DAVE K
