Percy Milem - Call On Me - Goldwax
Hi All....On our collectors part of the Rare Soul Scene, there have been many many changes, as discussed before todays scene is made up from middle aged people who's kids have flown the nest, and have indulged themselves in a very expensive hobby, which in many cases replaces old addictions that were common on the scene? also appeals to the MOD values of being elite, To be honest the interest in buying bootlegs of any record baffles me, why spend good money on fake goods? there are many people on the scene today who not educated in the many appealing aspects the pre-internet scene offered, back in the early 70s most of the top records were not even 5 years old, yet to find them, it was hard work, and when you did get a rare find, it was easy to find a collector to buy it, The other week I was doing my yearly look at old record lists, if you take a comparison between a mid 70s SOUL BOWL list to those of today, it's amazing to see how few rare records are on Johns list and he sold no UK items, to find rare UK soul, you needed to no people like PETE WID MICK SMITH IAN CLARKE ADY C, To even stand a chance of getting the rare records that we call BRITISH. As for BOOTLEGS apart from SOUL SOUNDS LABEL no dealer would sell them and no DJ would play them, reissues have some place on the scene but they are not collectable as an example Grapevine is still a collectable label, however the Grapevine 2000 series started of selling limited demos at £20 10 years on and most are available for a £5 note, this makes the current pressed records at best worth 50p, reissues & bootlegs have as much appeal as a CD, the are a intrusion and mislead many, My point is this you are not on the rare soul scene if you don't buy RARE SOUL! Inferno Uk Releases
HI ALL....Top SOUL BROTHER Neil Rushton is the man to answer this one, although not rare the TAINTED LOVE 12" is my fave release on the label for me, it come along at the right time, when the scene was shrinking, and the VA B side still sounds good DAVE K

Percy Milem - Call On Me - Goldwax
Hi All £80 for a DEMO is a great steal "well done", It's always worth reminding yourself, the golden rule in colleting SOUL 45's... a UK copy ISSUE or DEMO is always worth more than the US copy, although many collectors these days seem to want the USA copy and don't bother with the UK records or they just want the UK top rare SOUL only, however top collectors still love the UK stuff pre 73 DAVE K

Blues & Soul Mags
HI ALL I wonder how many copies of BLUES & SOUL are in the lofts of 7t's SOULSTERS, over the past 18 months I have seen dozens of B&S for sale on eBay, most are priced as individual items? I have all the B&S numbers through the 1970s and can honestly say, as much as I enjoyed reading them (still do) at the price wanted for each copy, would not be worth it if I wanted to replace all my copies, However the most collectable copies are #1 to #23 #24 to #35, & #50 being the best copy (in my opinion) Earl Van Dyke Cover, but it's the first series #1 - #23 that fetch the most, and each year that goes by they will cost more, later copies of B&S are not worth more than 25p a copy DAVE K

Nite Owl Leicester, dungeon And Beachcomber Nottingham
HI Malc the Talc!....I remember my Brother going to the Night Owl a few times, I think he had his 1st Joint in the place, He told me it was good when he saw Ben E King, I no that he used to go with a few mods from North Hearts, and like me they went to all the SOHO clubs, A few went to the SCENE, which by what I have been told was THE in place of all the clubs, I see you went to BLETSOE so you may well know me? Name Your Top Ten Ska And Reggae
HI ALL HERES THE FIRST 2 FROM THE 10, SCANS ONLY (SHAME) I WILL HAVE TO THINK HARD AFTER THIS, I HAVE GOT MY 123 ALREADY, SO WHAT 5 DO I PICK????? 1st up this is one you should all have, based on the 67 COXONE sound of Jackie Mitto's "whiter shade of " We have the SOUNDS UNLIMITED, fantastic deep mover with a haunting rhythm that is so effective, paving the way for great music to come, this is a reggae instrumental of class, it's not a pop-a pop-a come blow my horn stuff of the era (not a skinhead tune) this is one to skin up to SCEAN value £80+. 2nd up we have from the UK DOCTOR BIRD Label, Sir Lord Comic - "SKA-ing West" BIG SOUND in 67 especially at BOWES-LYON Stevenage New Town, this was the first place I become aware of Jamaican music & dancing, live bands like the KINKS SMALL FACES GENO WASHINGTON & the RAM JAM BAND and the WHO all played at BOWES, it was MOD WORLD inside, the WHIP also on DOCTOR BIRD comes to mind but does not make my top 10 as they have 1 in my top 3 of the 10, it's a start 5 to go + my top 3. Item Not As Described - Return Or Get A Price Reduction ?
HI ALL ...The record in photo described as mint, has a dish warp, this can happen to 1 in 20 records from the states & the same for hair line cracks, (many people probably don't no some of their collection has some kind of damage, if your purchases was a bargain, I would say KEEP them, as the Dish warp can be reversed as there has been no stretching or shrinking problems that you get with a ripple warp, cracked records are common, I have many, returns can be expensive and non profitable for both the buyer or seller, even if the seller has a returns policy if it does not cover postage costs, if you paid by credit card you will have cost covered, Pay-Pal do not cover you,!? Contact the seller and explained the problem and go for a compensation deal, pick something from his list and you pay the postage, If you don't want to do that or you have overpaid the going price and you want a refund if it has gone past the 14 days since the arrived, you may have more problems, as it is very hard to prove the seller was aware of the issue, and you could easy have dropped the 45 causing the crack, Best bet is you decide what to do, DAVE K

Ritz All-Dayer Patches
Hi All .. I remember buying this one in October 76, if you are selling them I will take 1 from you, PM me, However I will offer you sensible price? Ebay Auction you may get more than my offer, What I am after is the original VAVA badge, as mine faded so much in the wash it turned into just a round shape on the BAGS? never see it for sale so I assume it's in the top end of the badge market DAVE K

TA #0007 - 213-466-1281 : Sam And The Soul Walkers TA #0008 - 213-750-4966 : Village Crusaders TA #0009 - 213-384-9334 : Aki Aleong (reissue of VEE JAY #527) TA #0010 - 213-384-9334 : Bob Relf (YELLOW) TA #0010 - 213-389-9938 : Bob Relf (ORANGE) TRANS #0010 - 213-384-9334 : Bob Relf HI ALL.. This is a mystery that could be solved by John providing a good scan & giving his opinion, to fit in with this thread, as I find it difficult after all these years to except my copy is not a 1st issue, based on the fact that the telephone numbers differ? Having not seen TA #007,-008, 009, 45's, is it not more likely that the company used the earlier label at the same time as the updated label, they would not be the 1st record company to use different labels on the initial run,? Also why am I sure there is a white demo? if there is, it will have the info of the record up for auction, it should? but if it exists, the info will be the same as my release, this is speculation on my part, but needs to be sorted DAVE K

Bob Relf
HI ALL THERE IS CONFUSION ON THIS RECORD, as I said it's taken 40 years to sort it all out, the order is correct, and normally most collectors of rare soul would go for the 1st release, in this case the ORANGE issue, However the 1st issues also had a YELLOW label, and the YELLOW label was used on the reissue, We or I assumed that all YELLOW label copies were reissues, this has proved not to be the case, In the batch of 1st issues 45's with the ORANGE label are more common that the 1st issue YELLOWS, all bootlegs are yellow copies using the TRANS label, intern this has devalued the legit TRANS reissue, Hope that this is ok, or I have got wrong also DAVE K

It Ain't Necessarily Soul - Please Help. Ray Barretto
HI ALL ...A excellent 2 sider that has risen n price over the last 10 years, must say that if you like the ACID A side then you have to get the LP ACID, the B side has had potential to go big (I can't believe that it has not been played?) a great buy, £50 for the DEMO is about right, however if it took off, so would the price as I was a poor seller on release, DAVE K

THATS NEAR STAFFORD FOR ME, YOU BETTER WATCH YOU BAD EYE TOADY BOY, LESSOF THE LIP! DAVE K
-
Bob Relf
HI ALL Over the years I have had all variations of this superb 2 sider, B side was a Safford play. the yellow has proved to be the rare one to have, however the orange copy held that mantle for many years, the yellow 1st reissue on Trans for some reason does not fetch any more than the counterfeit record hat has poor sound, why this is has always baffled me, and established dealers for some reason don't give any credence to it either DAVE K

Most Bizarre Auction Bid I've Ever Seen (I Think)
Hi All Don't Worry Pete, there is another planet around here somewhere that I have yet to visit? this place makes no scence of Logic and no concept of MONEY, £150, madness, makes my Valuation of Glenn Miller Normal, My time as a drinker of beer, could have cost me, as quite often I would for example on EBay Put £170 on a £20 record, thinking I had put £17.50 DAVE K
