Was just sorting through some 45s here and suddenly came across a 45 which I've had in the "junk" pile for slightly too long. So put it on the turntable and... well it isn't exactly soul but it's in my opinion an absolutely SUBLIME piece of Mann/Weil penned brill building pop. I don't really know who to share this with but I just HAD TO play this to someone! This is an early (1965) 45 by Ronnie James Dio, yes, the same guy who later joined Black Sabbath and had his own band. But don't let that scare you...

Just wanted to make clear that I didn't say that it's rock'n'roll because it's a bad tune, as seems to be the case with a lot of people (ie: if it's early sounding and good then it's r&b, if it's early sounding and bad then it's r&r). I love rock'n'roll.

That's rock'n'roll with an absolutely awful vocal.

OK. Thanks anyway. Anyone else perhaps? I like his other Coral 45 (especially the uptempo side) and have wanted to hear "Soulville" for quite some time but can't spend £25 buying it "blind" unfortunately.

It's way up there somewhere in the top for me to. Nice eclectic body of work... from Nazz, to his solo stuff, to producing/engineering parts of The Band's "Stage Fright", to producing Meat Loaf's "Bat Out Of Hell" album, to Utopia... you name it, he probably did it. Most of it brilliantly as well.

It's from 1969. As it's quite a cheap 45 I don't think it's been booted. Yes, it's the Masqueraders guy.

Isn't that quite a BIG difference? Let's say that I should sell of a stack of bootlegs that I might have bought over the years, say 50 items, then that would've been it. Say instead that I had 200 copies each of 100 different bootleg 45s that I pressed up myself and kept pressing new ones. A big difference. A bit like when trying to bust drug leagues. You don't go after the individual sellers, you go after to the manufacturers and major distributors.

Yes, I think "Try It, You'll Like It" is great! Actually, I like almost all of The Sisters Love recordings and the recent compilation with their stuff on the UK label SoulJazz is an essential purchase if one doesn't want to chase down all the 45s. I'm also very partial to "You've Got To Make The Choice", the flip to "Mr. Fix-It Man" on MOWEST.

Nearly fell off my chair a couple of times when I was in Barcelona some months ago as I heard quite a lot of "accidental" soul. Off the top of my head, I heard Dorando's "Didn't I" in the background while eating tapas at some random restaurant and then while drinking some mojitos at some random bar I heard Silvetti's "Spring Rain" blasting in the background... Was a bit surprised.

Is this a version of the Derek Martin tune on Roulette? Or is it Derek Martin? I remember that you once had an auction for an acetate of Derek Martin's "Breakaway" on Roulette described as an "unissued Invitations tune" but then took it down. Did this acetate(?) come form the same source? Very interesting if it is an unissued Howard Tate tune, from which period is it?

I have this on an Italian Tamla Motown 45 which has got "(I Could Never Make) A Better Man Than You" on the flipside instead which seems to otherwise be LP-only. Basically it's the backing track to the Sisters Love tune with the same name which can be found on the flipside to "Give Me Your Love" on MOWEST. An absolute stormer!

7" only as far as I know. I searched long and hard for the 1932 mix and then all of a sudden, 5 copies turned up in less than a month from different sources (not a "find", they just suddenly appeared, in conditions ranging from VG- to EX+). Now I only see the "common" mix 7"s being for sale. Don't think a lot of people think about it so you'll probably be able to get a copy on eBay for about the same price as the other one, but the 1932 one is a whole lot rarer.

So far that's only for the "media" listings on ebay.co.uk. Not on ebay.com. But I guess it's only a matter of time. Still, the market is huge and worth paying a bit to get access to. Maybe not 9% + 4% for PayPal fees... but... I don't know, time will tell.
